The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

(OOC: If I've got IC times right, this is at least 2 months later.)
A computer given too many orders at once may shut down. A bank overrun with demanding people may shut down. A business with too many bills may shut down. Events of various degrees of severity, overload, burdens, and other issues could cause almost anything in nature or man-made creation to shut down spontaneous. Usually these events took place in an effort to gain time to reload, reorganize, rearrange and, hopefully, restart.
Iris's mind was in the first stages of shutting down. There were so many questions, moral issues, demands, event recollections, anger issues and other emotions going through her brain, it couldn't deal with the confusion. Therefore, she retreated to what she'd always considered a safe haven.
The company of animals.
Iris found herself returning to the Botanic Gardens, currently covered with snow and ice. She retreated to the evergreen thicket. The icicle-laced firs and spruces towered overhead in a comforting canyon, and the spicy-pungent smell of pine needles doused her senses in crisp heaven. She sat on a covered bench and opened a bag of feed. A pair of chickadees, used to the sound of the crunching paper bags, homed in on her, and sat waiting for their share. Within a few minutes she was surrounded by a small flock of various winged visitors, impatient to receive their daily offerings.
She could ponder her guilt later. Her troubles would wait for her, as would the anger and confusion associated with them. Unfortunately, all of the bad things weren't going anywhere anytime soon.
For right now, she just needed simplicity, and peace. With a sigh, she shut off her phone, snuggled into her scarf and jacket, curled up on the bench and closed her eyes for a bit.

At the first touch on her shoulder, Iris startled awake, and nearly fell off of the bench, scaring most of the birds. Her ice gem flared into activity at her surprise. Fortunately, since the air was already cold, her smoky breath would go unnoticed, as well as her slightly blue-tinged skin.
"excuse me miss, but its dangerous to sleep in the freezing cold. I realize you have plenty of feathered friends around but really, new york isn't much of a safe place to sleep in the warmth spring. I already chased off two menacing squirrels."
She took a shaky breath, and let it out slowly, blowing cold foggy circles in the air. "S-sorry," she stuttered. "I-I didn't know.... anyone else was around...." She gulped.
"I'm Virote."
"I-Iris." She tried to smile through her nerves, and not seem so jumpy. Unfortunately, she had a sudden feeling of deja vu about the last guy she'd met in a park. At least this one seemed friendly enough.

" Didn't mean to startle ya, but its hard not to when you are waking strangers. no need to apologize, its your health after all and yeah, not to many visitors in the winter though, I think its prettier now."
She nodded at that. Not a big fan of cities, Iris felt the snow and ice softened the hardness a bit.
"Nice to meet you Iris, just didn't want you to catch cold." If he only knew.... "Can I buy you a cup of cocoa or coffee? Not that I make a habit of waking strangers."
"Um, sure. I-I guess...." She shivered slightly out of reflex, though the chill in the air actually had little to do with it. "Th-thank you."
"So what keeps ya in new york?"
"N-nothing special...."
Iris glanced around. Despite being in a public area, she didn't see anyone else around; that could be a good thing or a bad thing.
<"Lose the gem, Iris. If you're going to be paranoid, at least do it with a clear mind.">
She closed her eyes briefly. The cold fog of her breath lessened a bit, and her skin lost the cold blueness. She took another deep breath.
"Sorry, I'm not from around here," she apologized. "And things are a bit.... you know.... tense, lately. It seems." She shrugged.

"tell me about it, with all those creepy robots running around, as if muggers weren't enough to worry about. I don't know how many little kids I have seen not wanting to leave a restaurant with one those things outside."
"I don't blame them." Iris shifted, a phantom itch/pain suddenly flaring up in her side.
"No need to apologize, figured you were a local, most tourists aren't willing to fall asleep on benches."
<"Oops...."> She shrugged and smiled a bit, hoping he'd overlook her slip.
"it's Thai, just like me. not quite local either just at home where ever I go, I suppose."
He certainly appeared confident enough. Inwardly Iris sighed. It must be nice not to have to worry about anything.
"coffee or coca? both are that way."
"Coffee," she replied without hesitating. Then she added, with a blush, "Um, thank you." She emptied the rest of her seed bag, then matched his stride back down the path. At that point she realized that she had to look up at him; he was at least two or three inches taller than she was, something she wasn't used to.
She blushed again when the shopkeeper recognized her, further uncovering her earlier slip of the tongue. She also didn't miss the suggestive wink one of the other workers sent their way.

"My pleasure. not every day I get to treat a Pretty woman to Coffee."
By that time Iris had turn an interesting shade of pink. Not necessarily because she was flattered or interested, although he was rather cute, but because she was suddenly paranoid that either Crystal was listening from her phone, or that Hunter, or one of his underlings, was watching. She didn't want to give Crystal any more ammo for embarrassing her. Nor did she want to give Hunter a chance to play 'Overprotective Father'.
She managed a rather weak, and nervous, chuckle.
"I'll take a hazelnut, grande and for you, Iris?"
"Um, the usual. Uh, I-I mean, a White Chocolate Cappucino, please. Um, venti."
<"Oh forget it, Iris. You can't even lie straight."> She mentally scolded herself, and the redness deepened even further. At this rate, eventually she'd resemble a tomato.
When the drinks came, she pointedly avoided the cashier's grin, and took great interest in blowing on the drink. <"All right, concentrate on the important things. Like, why is a strange man buying you a drink out of the blue?">
Aloud she said, "Um, thank you again, Vri.... Virote? Was it?" She said the name slowly, to be sure she said it right, then took a sip of her drink.
Iris was a coffee-holic; the warmth of the liquid, and the caffiene that came with it, served to partially bring her mind out of overload. She sighed deeply, and sat at one of the cafe' tables off to the side.
"Sorry for being rude. I guess I was a bit.... preoccupied, and didn't realize how cold it was."

“ You’ve got it, Most people aren’t willing to try it a second time, so I rarely hear my name. More the Hey, how’s it going or general dismissal of any formalities. If you find you are having trouble with it, I don’t mind the simplification to V.”
" 'V' I can remember." She smiled slightly.
“Once again, you don’t have anything to apologize for. It was indeed cold but it was more than a bit rude of me to wake you. After all you cold have been happily napping and I very well might be the one intruding.
“So, you sounded a bit opposed to the bots, I my self find them unacceptable.”
Iris sighed slightly. "That's one way of putting it. You heard the news report, too? To be honest, that's one reason I zoned out." She rubbed at her eyes. One reason among a hundred.... "I can't believe they set those things loose-"
Abruptly she stopped. She'd forgotten she was supposed to be playing the part of a mutant hater. Maybe it wouldn't matter; being a mutant hater didn't automatically make you a Stalker lover.

" yeah, it is tragic though, I can't help but feel like the regular population getting a taste of what the mutants are getting Isn't absolutely a bad thing."
That sounded fairly 'pro-mutant'. Iris watched him over the rim of her cup.
"Maybe it will help get them off the street. I can't get over the fact they are shipping the mutants off."
She frowned at the mention of the camps. So far none of her friends had made it to the casualty list, but she was still holding her breath.
"I mean I can understand imprisoning, the ones that earned it with crime, but they tried to take the kids along with the killers. Maybe thats me, not that I wanted to see anyone die over this."
She closed her eyes, remembering the rubble that was once such a beautiful school. What had happened to all of the students that weren't captured?
" But yeah enough of the dreary, what do you think about our presidential choices. I guess that could be dreary as well depending on your point of view."
"Close-minded idiots," she all but spat out, then bit her lip. She looked down, and set her cup on the table. "Sorry. I don't care much for politics."
<"Or the people that play the game"> she added silently.

" I couldn't agree more. You can tell a lot about a person from their view on politics and I can't help but love your reaction to them. It seems that people that really think about, well that really think, don't particularly love the system the states has. Not that they are doing so bad in the general sense; they are keeping this nation at number one, but perhaps a dreamer always looks for better."
"Dreaming is all well and good," Iris replied with a sigh. "Unfortunately history favors the narrow-minded. And the ones with more money or the bigger gun. I don't know about you, but that leaves me blissfully out of the loop."
Honestly, Iris could careless about such things, but quite a bit of her bitterness over other issues, like her friends in the camp and the conflict with Hunter, came out in her voice. Anyone listening could have easily read her reaction wrong.

"That is true enough, I have been called activist in my time. As you say its nice to dream but to get anything done, sometimes you have to chase the dream and turn it to reality. Anything in particular you have in mind that the narrow minded need their eyes opened to?"
Iris glanced up. The young man had a glint in his eye that made her suddenly wary.
"Even if I did, what would it matter?" She shrugged.
<"Remember, you're supposed to be a mutant hater.... But then again, what if he isn't?"> Her mouth twitched downward, ever so slightly.

"Just wondering if you are one of those who talk or if you are one of those who chase and get what they are after. Just wondering if whatever has you down can be solved and you don't have to carry that weight on your shoulders. Just wondering what can have such deep eyes carry deeper sorrow. Why your light hearted smile is restrained by something....pain perhaps?"
Iris lifted her drink and held it in front of her mouth with both hands. "You wonder quite a bit, don't you?" she remarked nonchalantly. Even without all of the mayhem of the recent months, Iris had a rural-native wariness of city-goers. She wasn't exactly new to pick-up attempts, but if that's what this was, he definitely put a new twist on it.
"In order asked," and she held up her fingers to tick off each question, "neither, because both talking and chasing tend to result in trouble, I've no more weight than most everyone else in this city, and same goes for the sorrows."
She smiled, to take any sting off of her words. But since she didn't know what he was thinking, she didn't want to risk giving him any wrong ideas either.

"Well now, you are good at avoiding an answer strait, but I relent. Snow white my dear perhaps you are right and we should stick to simpler things."
Iris blushed at the first statement, and looked down. Well, she'd grown accustomed to hiding everything. Though one of these days it was all going to come spilling out....
At his second statement, though, her head came back up in surprise. "Snow White?" Gah! The whole dark-hair, sleeping in the snow thing! Her face grew even warmer. At the same time a shudder went up her back. Her Ice gem was back 'online'.
" Do you Ice skate? and if so would you like to? There is a rink not to far from here."
<"Now there's a coincedence....">
Aloud she simply said, "Sure." She stood and followed him, taking exaggerated interest in her coffee. Finally, after a few minutes of silence, she spoke up again. "Sorry for being rude. I'm.... not used to talking to strangers...." She shrugged, and attempted to smile, feeling a bit of deja vu at the same time.

“Once more no apologies. After all for a stranger I am rather strange. Right this way.”
Well, at least he was honest. Which was more than she could say for herself at the moment. Plus, she'd been the one asleep on a bench in the middle of a public place.
She glanced up at one point, and saw him staring at her. Why was he staring at her? She cleared her throat and became unusually interested in the people they passed. Every now and then she'd reach around to scratch at her shoulder nervously, where the icy blue gem was embedded in her back.
She hadn't been inside an ice rink in long while; she wasn't even sure she remembered how to skate. There was a line at the rental, which gave her time to try and recall. She briefly considered activating her Ice gem, as a back up in case her memory failed. And just as quickly dismissed the notion.
Once they had their skates, and were at the edge of the rink, she concentrated on standing. She made a rather comical figure at first, wobbling and with her ankles and knees turned in. It seemed the red in her face was determined to stay there.
"Uh, been a while.... Whoa! Hehe.... Long while, I guess.... More used to hor-or-ses...."
Finally though, she found her center, and began to look a bit more like she knew what she was doing.

She was unsteady enough to be grateful for his support, and held tight. Only when she finally found her balance, and got into the rhythm of things, did her embarrassment at holding his hand so tightly return. She eased her hold, but he seemed unwilling to let go. She'd already been rude enough, so she didn't pull away. And he was rather cute....
Good lord, her face was never going to cool off at this rate.
Then again.....
"Hey, Katie! Katie Christiansen!"
At first Iris ignored the call, thinking there were any number of Katies around. But when they added the last name, Iris's heart jumped. She glanced sideways at Virote. She'd told him her name was Iris.... She turned around to look behind them. The two calling her were two of the other Church acolytes that had been part of the mobbing the night before. In fact, one of them was the man who'd attacked Hunter.
<"Oh great...."> Iris turned back, trying to ignore the men. But they had other plans. As they made one pass around the rink, the young men that had called skated out to catch up with them.
"Hey Katie. Fancy meeting you here." The one had a rather unpleasant smile on his face. "Didn't think we'd see you again after last night."
Iris didn't return the smile at all. "Why's that Nick?" He shrugged, still smirking.
"I dunno. Thought you'd be home taking care of Darren. The pair of you looked kind of rough last night."
He looked pointedly at Virote. Iris kicked herself mentally at the sticky situation she suddenly found herself in.

"acctually Darren asked me to take his sweet Kate out as she was stressed out last night, if you guys know Darren, you know he is stubborn to the end, and would rather be alone and grumbling than nursed."
Iris resisted the urge to stare at Virote. So much for honesty. Thank goodness.... The funny part was that he didn't realize how truthful his comment was.
" if you don't mind, I would appreciate if you changed your tone when addressing her. I think things will go much more smoothly that way."
Nick gave Virote a whithering look. "What are you? Her bodyguard?" His companion snorted and opened his mouth to add say something.
"Don't say anything Phil," Iris interrupted him, holding up her hand. The kid had an unbelieveably dirty mind, and she was in no mood to deal with it. Then she turned back to Nick, donning the rebellious and sarcastic personality that she used around the other acolytes.
"Two things. One, Darren can take care of himself, as can I. I don't need protection, especially from the likes of you. And two," and she latched onto a bit of Virote's lie, "I wouldn't have to take care of him, if you hadn't tried to brain him with a bat! You were supposed to be getting rid of the mutant filth, not attacking your allies!"
Nick practically growled at her. "You two were doing something screwy over in that corner. I can't prove it yet, but I know you were helping those freaks, somehow."
Iris rolled her eyes. "Oh please, Nick. You know as well as I do that would be a stupid thing to do." Stupid, yes. Impossible? No.

“Really they were the ones helping the mutes? And you were the one swinging the bat at the mutant’s enemies? Sounds to me like Darren has a bit more proof that you are working for the other side than you have on them.”
Nick's eyes widened a bit, then narrowed as he realized what that sounded like. "If that's supposed to be a threat, you'd better check your facts. I've been loyal for two years, Pal, and taken out more freaks than you can count." Iris's grip on Virote's hand reflexively tightened. "You've been around, what? Two months?"
"What's your point, Nick?"
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner that you guys were joining? You both know I would get rid of them as much as you would.”
The low voice in her ear sent up a red flag, but she didn't reply, as Virote spoke louder for Nick and his friend's benefit.
“I guess its no surprise from a couple screws up, to try to cover their stupidity, by claiming something as outrageously stupid as betrayal.”
She was beginning to feel more and more like a canary, with a pair of cats on one side and a hawk hidden in the shadows on the other.
<"Note to self: Avoid the parks and the men in them in the future.... It only leads to trouble.... Okay, deal with the cats first, then worry about the hawk.">
Very carefully she extracted her hand from Virote's grip. She lowered her voice to keep any curious passer's by from overhearing, but it still came out a growl.
"Look, Nick. It was our first Cleansing ceremony, and I have a weak stomach for blood. Even Duane and Nell know that. You can even talk to Sister Anna. I nearly fainted at the Acolyte ceremony, she can tell you. I don't know where you pulled 'traitor' out of that, but I'm warning you now, you'd better have some solid proof before you go spreading it around." She planted a sly smile on her mouth. "Unless you want the accusation shot back in your face. Darren's a heirophant, remember? And you attacked him. That makes you look like the mutie sympathizer, doesn't it?"
Nick's eyes blazed with hate. He leaned in real close. "We'll see." Then he turned to Virote. "What chapter did you say you were with?"
Iris heart jumped a bit. She didn't remember seeing Virote's name anywhere on the list of Church of Humanity acolytes. True, she hadn't gone through the whole list, but she couldn't be sure Nick hadn't. And in the whole conversation, she never actually mentioned the CoH. That little detail could blow the whole act.
The gems on her back shuddered slightly, threatening to activate again if she didn't keep her emotions under control.
