The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The business world was an interesting one. One that Kealey Shinbo was still trying to wrap her head around two years after managing to secure her very own offices and launching her exclusive line. Things had been good, really good and she couldn't help but feel like the luckiest girl in New York as she looked out her windows and over the city.
The offices were small, and a bit eclectic, but they were high above the bustling crowds of New York and the distance gave the blonde enough space that she could actually think and let her creativity reign without the burden of too many outside emotions. Sure, Kealey's secretary was there, and the few workers that she employed to help her with custom designs, but she was used to them by now and could nearly shut them out on most days. They knew about her abilities, and were the kindest of people. They were kind of like a little family.
Swiveling in her office chair, Kealey peeked at her appointment calendar. She had a client meeting this afternoon with a woman who needed a dress for a gala. These were Kealey's favorite kind of customer. The woman was beyond excited about the party, and had seen some of Kealey's work and been interested. The two had already had a couple of concept meetings, and the woman had been delighted in what they'd been able to create. Today was the first fitting of the gown itself, and Kealey couldn't wait for feedback.
There was another appointment today too, one that was set to begin very soon. The meeting was with a Mr. Derek Menes, someone Kealey couldn't claim the pleasure of knowing on a personal level. The meeting had been made a couple of weeks ago, and Kealey still didn't know exactly what it was about.
Casting out over the office, Kealey let her powers flow to the forefront of her mind and quickly identified the new person in the waiting area. His feelings were hopeful and patient, and there was something he wanted.
Reaching out with every intention of asking her secretary, Claudia, to send the man back, Kealey paused and then rose. There wasn't much going on today, there was no reason she couldn't greet the man herself.
So out Kealey went, following the unfamiliar emotions to the young man in the reception area. Smiling welcomingly, the blonde held out her hand, "Mr. Menes," she said, Irish accent light and friendly, "I'm Kealey Shinbo. If you'd like to step back into my office, we can discuss why you're here."

At the exact moment the door lock clicked, Kealey looked up for her book and waited for Shin to make his way into the living room. The rest of the day had been productive, and had even ended with free time, a rare enough occurrence these days that the blond had tried to take advantage by reading a book. Unfortunately, the scene at the café had risen in her head every time she tried to concentrate.
The couple had seemed so comfortable, so natural. Surely there had been a surveillance camera or something that the police had found. Now that Shin was home she could ask.
"Hey," she said, closing the book and setting it aside, "You guys find anything?"

"I love you too." Kealey replied, pushing a stray strand of hair behind hear ear. The coroner's van was pulling up now, and the rest of the forensics team would be close by. It was a conflict of interest, Kealey knew, and she'd already used all the tools she currently had at her disposal. She scanned the area again to see what she could see with her power and found absolutely nothing.
As she'd already said, it took a special kind of crazy to commit a crime like this, and someone needed to stop the person responsible. If the police were capable of figuring things out, and figuring them out quick, there wouldn't be any conflict of interest. "See you at home." she said, and turned to head to the bus stop.
If, however, they couldn't handle the task at hand, Kealey would have no problem calling in the other X-Men. It was her job, as much as it was Shin's to send a civilian away from a crime scene.

"I'll take the bus." Kealey said, eyebrows knitting together in a frown as she moved to start gathering her bags. Shin's partner had thought she was being helpful, and the police teamed with the X-Men all the time. They were going to be looking for a special kind of psychopath here, and profiling was something that could potentially come very easy to Kealey. Yet...Shin was sending her away.
They would talk later? Yup, they would.
"Talk to you later!" she said with a bright smile. Issues or no, Kealey wasn't going to say anything in front of her husband's partner.

Shin was pleased with the way she'd handled things, and Kealey gave him a thin lipped smile. It wasn't a grin-worthy situation, but she was still glad that she'd managed not to muck things up from a police perspective. Sometimes that was hard, X-Men weren't detectives, they were first responders and justice dealers.
Shin asked her about the bystanders and Kealey shook her head to the negative, "I checked and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary." she said, blue eyes scanning the group again. Her gaze flicking back to the couple at the table for a moment, the blond frowned.
"I'm not sure what I would pick up here though..." she said, staring intently, "This wasn't a crime of passion...it was art."

The emotions from the police were a comfort, especially considering the fact that one of the responding officers was Kealey's husband, and she mentally threw herself into the normal comfort of his emotions like a toddler clinging to their security blanket. It was easier to deal with the things Shin was feeling than what she was feeling, and it made it easier to go through the proper channels of this thing.
Immediately after she'd made the call, Kealey had cast out around the bistro to see if she could find the person responsible for the couple sitting at the table. People who did this sort of thing wanted to see the results of all their hard work, they didn't like to miss the show. Unfortunately the streets were simply too crowded with shoppers, tourists, and business people on lunch. Absolutely nothing had been out of the ordinary, and Kealey told Shin's partner so.
"I found them just like this, didn't touch anything, and after they wouldn't respond I put a mirror under his nose." Kealey said, frowning at the body. "When there was nothing, I called dispatch. There isn't anything else..." she said calmly, turning to look at Shin.
"I was trying to send you a text...I found a present for your Mother."

So far, today had been pretty stinking awesome, Kealey decided, grabbing a table in the cool outdoor section of one of her favorite cafés, bags arranged around her in a proud display of prompt holiday action. The season had started, and if they were going to get presents all the way to Japan before the 25th of December, Kealey had known she needed to get an early start. Shin's mother was the hardest to please, so her presents always came first. The fates had shone down on the blond, however, and she'd found the perfect thing. So quickly, had she found it, in fact, that Kealey had decided to reward herself with a cup of coffee.
Shin was on duty, and Kelaey had just started typing him a text about her great luck, when a bird had come out of nowhere and landed on the head of a woman sitting a table over.
Birds...were not something that Kealey got much joy from. They weren't like a cat, who tested you and made you earn their affection. They weren't like a dog, who loved you unconditionally and was thrilled to see you no matter how long you had been gone. They had those beady little eyes and were more prone to pooping and staring than anything as charming as chasing a string or playing fetch.
Apparently though, this woman felt differently about birds. Apparently, this woman thought they were great, because she hadn't moved a muscle when she became a pearch.
Chills running down her spine that had nothing to do with cool December air, Kealey had focused her powers in that direction...only to find that the usual torrent of emotions from people in a public place were completely absent in this couple. That was an incredibly rare occurrence only brought on by two things, an adapted, and a complete lack of emotions to read.
Eyes widening slightly, the blond stowed her phone in her coat pocket and moved towards the couple, reaching into her purse for her compact mirror. "Hello?" she said, frowning at the lack of response she received. Full of trepidation, and careful not to touch anything, Kealey held the mirror out and under the man's nose.
Nothing.
Sighing, the blond placed the mirror back into her purse and pulled her phone from her pocket. Quickly backing out of her messaging feature, she dialed three little numbers and waited for the dispatcher to answer.
"I think I've found two dead bodies..." she said, and the rest was history.

"I would have talked to the man." she said, "Because he is a completely different thing from the monster."
As for the jail. Kealey shook her head.
"You forget that I have unique perspective on the whole, 'jail' thing, Shin."
She shrugged then, "I think I can help him." she said simply.
As for the rest, "I love you too, and I'm always scared when you're out there, because you'll do all you can to uphold the law and all those other honorable things you do."

She was making him flustered, or angry, or irritated. Something, but at least he was talking like a person now instead of a robot employed by the NYPD.
"I knew what I was doing Shin. You had him restrained, and I had a feeling about his....feelings." her voice was calm, lacking all the pauses and stops that Shin's had at the moment. "And I know a thing or two about feelings. You watched him hurt your friends, and you wanted to let them take care of it their way."
What had she meant by, "us"?
"And I meant an X-Man." she said quietly, not pointing out that the whole reason they were having this conversation was that he'd encouraged her to try out, and she had succeeded.

"So you're not one of us anymore?" Kealey said, eyes narrowing slightly. Suddenly it was easy to be angry again, and she let it flow, "Maybe I'm not talking to you as a cop right now." That statement hung in the air between them.
"And while I appreciate you saying you won't make me look weak, I think I was doing just fine on my own. Thanks."

Kealey shook her head, "No." she said, gently but firmly. "You saw that monster hurt someone." Even if Kealey had to admit that she was relieved that the woman's mutation had saved her life, didn't mean she had to change her mind.
"He was genuinely scared and confused and horrified. What he needs is help. Not jail."
That said, Kealey looked steadily at her husband, an inexplicable shudder running through her.

Kealey shook her head at her husband and sighed, leaning against the back of the couch. He was so hard on himself sometimes that it was hard for her. Kealey didn't know what to do right now, short of using her power to make him feel better...and that was something she'd never even suggest unless he asked.
Things like this were hard, and they were just going to be hard.
"Doubting yourself makes it worse, because next time you'll hesitate, and you can't hesitate."
Kealey frowned, "He didn't know what he had done." she said, "And he needed help. Not what he'd have gotten from those officers."

Well damn.
Yes. This was damn-worth. It was something else when you spent hours working up a great tirade, and lots of self-rightiousness in a big balloon of angst...then had it deflated by a well-placed dart of reason and apology.
Like the metaphorical balloon, Kealey deflated right there on the couch. She wasn't ready for cuddle and tears yet, but at least some of the tension from the day was melting away. Now, she was actually able to see how worked up Shin was.
She still stung though.
"You don't help either of us when you do that." she said softly. Admonishing her husband was such a rare occurrence, that the blond really didn't know how to go about the activity. "And you know word will get around."
She looked up and over, "Please don't put me in that position again. Do you think I don't worry? It's part of the job, and you're just going to have to learn to trust me."

Kealey had to frown a bit at the feelings she was starting to register from Shin. She wanted to make him feel better, but at the same time this was really important to her. Those emotions though...they made it hard. The blond tried to keep drawing, but she pushed too hard and the tip of her pencil broke, streaking black across the sketch she'd nearly finished.
Heaving a deep sigh, she set the sketch book aside and took a moment to rub her temples. How did one even start a conversation like this?
It was simple. You didn't.
IN his bed across the room, Thorn whuffled and flopped over onto his side. A walk probably wasn't going to happen any time soon, so a nap seemed at the top of the order.

The situation was even more serious than Kealey had initially thought. The sound of Shin pouring cereal was even irritating to her right now, and everyone in the surrounding apartments was in a good mood. A few years ago, she'd have been happy to be able to tell her emotions from everyone else's, but tonight she'd have been happy to have someone else to pin the whole thing on. It was hard, being angry at Shin, but sometimes it just happened.
He returned to the livingroom and sat down, and Kealey kept right on working with her sketches. If he didn't know she was upset about something, he deserved the silent treatment. At least for a while. Usually, Kealey was willing to make nice and compromise...but nothing about what had happened today was okay. The wife knew that her husband had had a difficult time today, and she wanted to be there for him, but he needed to realize some things for her too.
