The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Rebecca looked down at the manila folder in her hand, amazed at how many of the papers tucked away in it either had the potential to change her life, or had already done so. The very idea of approaching her new life as a college coed was mind-blowing, not to mention intimidating.
Since her acceptance, Columbia blue had been making its way as the prominent color in Rebecca's wardrobe. She was wearing one of those pieces, a blue tanktop with a Columbia Lion across the front, as she stood at the door of the guidance councilor.
Despite the door being cracked open, Rebecca still knocked politely. "Miss Taylor, may Ah come in?" It was nearing the end of the business day, so she hoped Miss Taylor had not already taken her leave for the day.

>>"Miss Taylor, may Ah come in?"
Gemma looked up from reading a file and tilted her head.
"Yes, sure" she called out, turning her chair to face the door. She was almost done for the day, but she was never one to turn a student away when they approached her. Plus she still lived in the Mansion, she was never really off duty anyway.
"Hi" she smiled as the girl in Columbia blue walked into the office "... Rebecca, right?"
She was another one of the students she did not interact with very often. Thsoe were usually the ones who did not get into trouble. Rebecca looked like a decent young lady. Gemma wondered what she was looking for.

Rebecca heard the councilor call her from within, so she opened the door and entered the office to see Miss Taylor sitting and waiting.
>> "Hi... Rebecca, right?"
Rebecca nodded, cheeks slightly pink, even though it made sense that a woman she barely interacted with would have a rough time remembering her. "Aye, miss," she replied, relocating to the chair opposite Miss Taylor and sitting down.
>> "Take a seat. How can I help you?"
Rebecca placed the manila folder carefully on the desk. "Um, Ah jist finished my orientation at Columbia yesterday, an' they wanted me tae get some signatures from you fer my transcripts an' a few other documents."
Flipping open the folder, Rebecca picked out the three sheets requiring Miss Taylor's signature. "Honestly, Ah didnae think this process would be sae stressful." Not that the stress for Rebecca was entirely paperwork's fault; she had plenty on her mind.

Gemma smiled and reached for the papers.
"Congratulations on getting in" she said with all honesty before she even looked at the paperwork "It's an amazing thing to make it so far. Don't worry about the paperwork, that's what I am here for."
Looking over the papers she made sure to read them first, just to make sure everything was on order, before she signed them all and handed them back to Rebecca.
"Here we go. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
With Mama, phrases like that were not mere politeness; she really meant them, and it showed in the way she said them. She knew how stressful starting a school could be; she was here to help.

>> "Congratulations on getting in. It's an amazing thing to make it so far. Don't worry about the paperwork, that's what I am here for."
There was something about being congratulated by Miss Taylor that made Rebecca feel warm and prideful. Some of the staff at the Mansion were nice, and some were nondescript, and others were plain weird, but the guidance counselor was kinda and welcoming.
>> "Here we go. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
The correct answer was probably to politely decline and allow Miss Taylor to go about the rest of her day without the bothers of a silly girl's problems, but the question was so sincere from her lips, it was hard not to reply truthfully. "Well... Ah dornt know, Ah kinda have a lot on my mind these days."
The nagging part of Rebecca's brain that thought she was being a burden chimed in, and she quickly revoked her statement. "Bit Ah'm sure you're busy, sae Ah can jist leave you be." She motioned to leave her chair, feeling silly and knowing her problems were too trivial to trouble Miss Taylor with.

"I'm not going anywhere" Gemma smiled. She stood, walked around her desk, closed the office door, then walked over to the nearby table where a water heater stood with a row of mugs and boxes of tea. "Want some tea? I'm done for the day so we've got all the time in the world if you want to talk. That is what I am here for."
She really was. Not just because of her job description, but because of all the kids in the Mansion; Mama was never really off duty.

>> "I'm not going anywhere. Want some tea?
There was a truly good heart within that power-cancelling adapted across the table. The younger girl's insecurities still badgered her about bothering the adult with her worries, but she put the concerns in the back of her mind. "Actually, that would be lovely, thank you."
>> "I'm done for the day so we've got all the time in the world if you want to talk. That is what I am here for."
Rebecca looked right into the woman's brown eyes, making sure she could open up to her about some of the more personal problems she had stumbled across or created as of late. She could see a trustworthy soul starting back at her, so she sank into her chair, getting more comfortable with her posture. "Things have changed sae much this year... going back tae a... well, normal school after Xavier's, even if Ah was only here since December... it's kinda intimidating."
It was not the chief concern on the redhead's mind, but it was there; the concern of being an outsider in a "human school." She would build up to the bigger worries on her mind, but they were on the topic of college anyway.

Gemma nodded and put up water to boil before she handed the box of tea to Rebecca to choose from.
>>"Things have changed sae much this year... going back tae a... well, normal school after Xavier's, even if Ah was only here since December... it's kinda intimidating."
She nodded again; she saw the girl's point. Xavier was the best place it could be as a safe haven, but it was also important to prepare students for going out into society without feeling like they should run back behind the safe walls of the mutant school.

>> "Do you worry that your powers will cause a problem?"
Rebecca considered the possibilities of chaos that her magnetic mutation could cause, but she shook her head. "Nae, Ah think Ah shoulds be fine... unless Ah meet another mutant who can make me lose control, Ah've always had a pretty good grasp on my powers."
Rebecca looked around the room, noticing various metal objects she could spot but no longer sense. "Honestly, it feels weird nae seeing the magnetic field here." It was weird being around an Adapted, as it basically deprived her of a sense she had grown accustomed to having, like she had just been made temporarily blind or deaf. "Ah like my powers."
The powers themselves were not the problem. "Ah jist... Ah worry Ah'm gorna feel out of place, like people will look at me differently." It was worrisome to know she was stepping out of the safety of her second home.

Gemma smiled and handed a mug of hot water to Becca. The girl was more than comfortable with her powers, and Gemma was happy for that. Going out into the world was hard enough without mutant powers going haywire. She was one of the lucky ones.
>>"Ah jist... Ah worry Ah'm gorna feel out of place, like people will look at me differently."
"Well, I can tell you this" she said, sitting down on a chair next to her "Everyone feels out of place in the first year of college. Everyone is new, everyone is away from home, and everyone is trying to make new friends. The good news is, your mutation does not define you. You are a very capable young lady, you will figure out the rest."

Rebecca took the mug and bowed her head in thanks, taking a teabag from the earl grey container. It was the favorite of her father, Garrison Grey, and as such was the tea she grew up with.
>> "Well, I can tell you this; Everyone feels out of place in the first year of college. Everyone is new, everyone is away from home, and everyone is trying to make new friends. The good news is, your mutation does not define you. You are a very capable young lady, you will figure out the rest."
As the tea began spreading through the hot water and the pleasant scent entered her nostrils, she was comforted by Miss Taylor's guidance. (Seriously, that woman was great at her job.) Knowing everyone else she would meet at college was sharing similar feelings of isolation made Rebecca feel more at ease. It did not alleviate the worries, but it took the edge away from them.
She smiled weakly. "Thank you. You're right... Ah guess I'm jist worried about going out there on my own... Ah mean, with Agnes going to a different college an' all..." Now that was closer to her real concerns.

"You know you can always come home and sleep in your own bed" Gemma smiled "That is the good thing about going to school in the city."
She knew how important that was. Her children went to school in the other side of the country, and they got terribly homesick sometimes. But the Mansion was not going anywhere, and it was always open for the students who had lived there before.
"Oh. Where is Agnes going?" she asked, she really needed to catch up on the files and the paperwork. Possibly talk to Agnes herself. "I know it is hard to be away from friends you spent a lot of time with. But I am sure you two will stay in touch. It is much easier to do that these days."

>> "You know you can always come home and sleep in your own bed. That is the good thing about going to school in the city."
The sentiment was nice, but ultimately unnecessary. "Well, Ah'd hope so, since Ah've opted to stay here an' commute." Rebecca was happy keeping her home-life and school-life separate. "Agnes isn't though."
>> "Oh. Where is Agnes going? I know it is hard to be away from friends you spent a lot of time with. But I am sure you two will stay in touch. It is much easier to do that these days."
It was now clear that Miss Taylor was unaware of Rebecca's romantic situation. She silently wondered if Kealey mentioned the library incident to any of the other staffers. "Well, she's going to Julliard. It's not far... bit Ah didnae expect my first relationship tae go long distance sae soon..." Julliard was in New York City, but it was not a few doors down on cold nights.

"Oh." Gemma took things like this in stride. Mutants came in all shapes and sizes, it would have been all kinds of wrong to expect all students to be the same on any other level or aspect of life. Gemma personally did not see anything wrong with girls dating. "I see."
Sipping her own tea, she considered the issue for a moment. Teenage relationships always changed with college, for better or worse.
"Well, I can't tell you everything will stay the same" she admitted finally "It never does, even if people go to the same college. But Julliard is still close, as you said, and in time you two will work out the rest." she meant that, too "How long have you been together?"

>> "Oh. I see."
From anyone else, those three words could easily mean, "You're an abomination and I feel uncomfortable around you," but from Miss Taylor, it was more obvious that she had just not expected Rebecca's answer. "Yup," she replied, rather amused.
>> "Well, I can't tell you everything will stay the same. It never does, even if people go to the same college. But Julliard is still close, as you said, and in time you two will work out the rest. How long have you been together?"
Rebecca did the mental math in her head. "It's been almost five months now, bit things were... starting for a few months 'afore that." In hindsight, it could have been a good idea during Rebecca's identity crisis to confide in Miss Taylor, but the past was the past. "Ah didnae e'en think Ah liked girls til Agnes."
Rebecca was feeling silly and paranoid thinking about her worries now, but she voiced them anyway. "Ah'm jist... nae used to Agnes being gone." It was probably one of her more prominent fears, she quietly mused, taking a sip of her tea. The warmth spread down her throat and through her body, but she was still anxious. "Especially with bunches of girls Ah've never met," she muttered.
