The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The paintings were truly master works and the fact that they had been created by the mutant artist Jesús Herrera made them even more precious, at least to Paul and hopefully other mutants as well. These were a true demonstration of how created a mutant could be with their ability and how much beauty they could make. Around five months ago when Paul had heard about the gallery exhibition he had known that at least some of the works needed to be procured and displayed for the enjoyment of those that could appreciate all facets of the art. Now that he had acquired them and allowed a sufficient amount of time to pass so that their theft was no longer at the top of anyone's list it was time to pass them on to their intended recipients.
Once again Paul found himself making his way into the Sanctuary although this time he was carrying a small crate that securely housed the three pieces of art. He had dressed casually in dark brown Gibson shoes, khaki pants, and a chocolate under shirt and white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up above the elbows not only for the reason of comfort but also because he knew he'd be carrying a crate and didn't want to do that sort of work while wearing anything nicer.
"Good morning Lisa." Paul called as he opened the door and held it open with the edge of one foot while twisting through the opening and striding into the foyer. As always the ever present secretary/receptionist/super secret scary lady was sitting behind the desk. He had yet to ever see a smile and he was beginning to wonder if she ever did smile or whether she ever left the sanctuary. Heck, did this woman ever go out and have fun? "Is Lori in? I've got something I think she might be interested in."
"She's at the office right now, but if it's important I could call her." Lisa eyeballed the crate and decided to dial whether Paul confirmed the importance of the meeting or not. Lori did love her presents.
"Why don't you have a seat in her office. You remember the way?" Lisa motioned with her head to the door as she pulled the receiver up to her ear. "Yes, Susan? I need you to get in contact with Ms. Faust..."
It took about three minutes to get to the main floor, two to get in the company car, ten minutes to go between Faust Pharmaceuticals and the Sanctuary and another 2 to get confirmation from Lisa that her office was, in fact, the place to go.
"A present? For me?" She teased as she closed the door behind them. Dressed in her usual power skirt suit with her hair twisted up tight at the back of her head, Lori looked her usual in control and all business self. Today's suit was a deep blue that made her skin seem milky smooth.
"It's not that important so there's no need for her to rush." Paul replied after a moments consideration but even as he spoke the words he saw that they had fallen on deaf ears. Already Lisa had picked up the phone and begun dialing. With a slight smile and a nod that yes, he did remember the way to the office, Paul picked up the crate and headed down the hall to the appropriate room. Behind him he could hear Lisa speaking with someone named Susan about contacting Lori. Was Susan perhaps Lori's assistant at Faust Pharmaceuticals? It was an interesting question that he'd have to explore and research at another time.
The office had the same spartan decor that he remembered. It was a very bare bones office that looked like it really didn't get all that much use. Although, as Paul set down the crate on the desk and took a seat he did wonder whether Lori was still storing a photo of some scantily clad girl in her desk drawer. He had been surprised to see it the first time but he wasn't curious enough to rifle through the drawers to see if it was still there. Besides, he wasn't trying to breach any trust that had developed between himself and Lori... at least not yet.
The minutes ticked by as Paul waited quite patiently. Thankfully that was one of the lessons he had learned over his long life. Patience was not only a virtue but it was also a necessity. But time also gave him a few moments to make sure his thoughts were organized. First there was the gift for Lori as well as the rest of the Sanctuary, then there would probably be some idle chit chat maybe a question about how Ms. Gage was doing, and then on to questions about other immortals.
"A present? For me?" The teasing tone of Lori's voice filled the room immediately after Paul heard the door open behind him. Not bothering to turn around, the gray haired man simply waited until the petite blond walked around in front of him to inspect the crate that was currently occupying her desk.
"What? To soon? Maybe I should have gone for dinner and a movie first?" Paul responded with his own little joke as he sat comfortably in the chair. "Actually, I'm ashamed to admit, it's for the Sanctuary as a whole. I should have thought to bring you something. Maybe a nice silver bracelet? Concert ticket? A box of chocolates? No, I know... a new switchblade."
It was actually rather nice to see Lori in a more relaxed situation than they had previously experienced. The first time they had met she had killed him, then they had been at a wild party together, then Paul was introducing her to Noel and evaluating the woman, but now finally they were simply meeting in at least something of a relaxed situation. Sure, Paul was planning on trying to get information out of her but that didn't mean they couldn't enjoy a pleasant verbal battle of wits. "Are you a blue steel or surgical stainless type of woman?"
"I don't do movies, but dinner would have been nice." More like movies didn't handle her power very well. Sit too close to anything important and the whole theater would be getting a refund. Lori grinned and went around the desk to take her seat. She was kidding, but Paul kept the joke going.
"Honestly, I've never used a knife. Should I have?" For the Sanctuary as a whole now? Lori put her delicate little hands on the crate and waited for some kind of assent before popping the nails up and out with her power. The metal fixtures tinked against the metal floor when they hit.
The lid came off and she recognized the smell of paint and canvas immediately. Art history had been one of her focuses in Libral Studies (AKA the indecisive slacker's degree). Lenna's first present to Lori had been a Delacroix painting that sometimes hung in this office, sometimes hung in her office at work. Liberty Leading the People. Most people thought it was a good recreation rather than one Lenna had nabbed from a museum.
She shimmied one of the canvases up and looked it over. Abstract, bright colors. It tickled her brain with recognition. Lori set her first aside with delicate reverence and pulled up another. "Are these Herrara panels? I thought they were..." Blue eyes flicked up to Paul and one eyebrow arched. "You sly thing, you. He was a mutant if I remember, right?" A grin was spreading. If she had her way these halls would be lined with stolen art. Too bad that would be police fodder. "Are you dumping these because they're hot?" She did have to ask before she got attached. If they would bring danger to these halls, she wouldn't put them up and that would be a real shame.
The running joke was fun but even in the midst of the teasing Paul made a mental note that Lori had just suggested that dinner some time would be a nice option. That was something he would file away and maybe take advantage of down the road. The blond spitfire was engaging company and a meal with her would be a nice distraction some evening.
"Oh, you've used a knife quite creatively in the past." Paul reminded with a grin. Sure she had been using her ability as well, or at least he assumed she had been, but it had still been a nice throw. Thankfully, there were no longer any hard feelings and so he could joke about. Probably the only time that a joke about death would be in good taste.
"Are there Herrara panels?"
Paul was impressed. Most people would never have recognized the works of art so quickly but apparently Ms. Faust had some interests that he hadn't realized. Paul was beginning to think that this particular gift was an ever better idea than he had first thought.
"He was a mutant. A paint manipulator which when combined with his natural artistic ability made him quite the creator. Unfortunately the art world as a whole simply refuses to accept the fact that he was a mutant." Paul's answers was simple, to the point, and with a touch of humor in his voice. "I thought they should be enjoyed by individuals that could appreciate all of his abilities, not just the artistic ones. They were hot but thankfully several months have passed for them to cool down and several tips have been made to both the police and FBI leading them to believe that the paintings have been sent over to Europe."
It had been a master stroke if Paul did say so. Working off of digital pictures of the paintings he had hired a forger to recreate two copies of the panels and then had one set shipped into Europe and the other into Asia. Because they were modern works, modern paint and canvases worked for recreation and because they had been created by a mutant originally, there were almost no brush strokes to compare. The forgeries weren't perfect but they were close enough to provided added distraction for some time.
"You probably have your own resources but if not I can get you an invoice from an... acquaintance that would show you ordered recreations of these painting and purchased them legally. Just to provide a safety net of course..."
It was interesting to watch this side of Lori. Paul had seen her fight thugs, commit murder, break through walls, fend off the cops, and conduct business with various individuals. He had never seen her simply doing something she enjoyed but from the smile on her face and the way her blue eyes were now shining it was quite clear that art was something she did enjoy. Maybe he'd have to add art gallery tickets to the dinner that was listed in his mind. It was something that might never ever happen but it was enjoyable to think about.
"I hope you can find someplace you feel comfortable displaying them."
Paul described why the art was important to not only him, but to the mutant community. That he thought of the Sanctuary when he thought of the mutant community was touching to Lori. Also the fact that he had even thought as far ahead to have the option of false papers earned him bonus points. The seemingly legal yet technically illegal nature was her favorite part of the mutant created artwork.
"After we get those papers in order, how you think they'll look in the library?" Lori held one up to a wall as if imagining it now. So long as they didn't put them on a wall that the library shared with the kitchen, they shouldn't go up in flames.
If it was bait or a set up, she was hooked and she knew it. The meaning of the paintings was just too much for her to pass up even with the danger. "Well now I feel bad that I didn't get you anything." The blonde flipped through the last of the paintings before sliding the first ones back into the crate. If Paul was expecting a thank you, this was as close as Lori was going to get.
He breathed a slight sigh of relief when Lori finally made the decision that she was going to accept the paintings. She was even going to accept his help getting the documentation to protect the Sanctuary which hopefully meant that she was beginning to trust him. "The library would be a great location. Somewhat private and protected yet still public enough for anyone in the Sanctuary to enjoy."
His chuckle was soft and warm in response to her statement about feeling bad. He wasn't out to give her a gift because he was looking for any sort of reciprocation. Sure, he had a few questions to ask but they were completely disconnected from the painting. After all, he had been working on the painting situation for several months. The questions were only about a week or so old. "If you feel that bad then just surprise me sometime... I'm sure you're quite good at surprises."
Falling silent for a moment, Paul waited as Lori boxed the paintings back up and once all the panels were safely tucked away he turned serious. "I do have a favor to ask Lori... completely unrelated from the paintings so you can feel free to say 'no'." He leaned forward ever so slightly, focusing his gaze on the woman with just a touch of intensity creeping into his eyes. This was important to him though someone that wasn't an immortal might not truly understand why. "I've heard through the grape vine about two other immortals that either have been or are currently here in New York. Two men, one of them names Hunter and one named Sebastian. Do those names and abilities mean anything to you?"
He insisted that it wasn't connected to the present, but he did want information. Silly Paul. Lori's bribe had put her in a good mood. She could answer a few harmless questions. Nothing in this world was free. Of course he would want something in return. In fact, it made her feel better that he had wanted something in return (despite his efforts to convince her otherwise).
"I've met them both, actually, and both have mutations like they walked right out of a fairy tale: one a vampire, the other a unicorn." Lori re-lidded the crate and her arms flexed against the fabric of her suit jacket as she moved the box out of her way and onto the floor next to the desk. The blonde took a seat in her chair, now complete with unobstructed view. She would have Lisa run a check on the false paper work before the paintings went up, but Paul seemed eager to please. Lori liked that and wanted to reward good behavior with good results. The paintings would go up as soon as she was sure that they wouldn't bite her in the *ss.
"What did you want to know, specifically?" Because Lori had files. She might share them anecdotally or she might share the paperwork. She was, after all, in a good mood.
This was to easy. Lori not only knew of the two mutants he had mentioned but she had actually met both of them. In fact, the ease of the situation made Paul just a little bit wary. He wanted to trust Lori and he was pretty sure that they had begun to build at least some trust on both sides but he still knew he needed to be cautious. Lori had shown she was still cautious when she asked whether the paintings were hot. Caution was a good trait and it once again proved Lori's intelligence. But caution most definitely traveled both ways.
"I first heard about the existence of other immortals only a week or so ago. I'd like to meet them and find out a little more about them and their abilities to see if it helps me learn anything about myself." Paul replied, remaining as open and honest as he could for the moment. Really he had no reason to try to hide anything that he had mentioned thus far. He had plenty of secrets but his desire to meet other immortals was not one of them. "Do you know where either of them might be or how I might go about finding them?"
The fact that their abilities seemed to fit in a fairy tale was an interesting revelation. His own ability of rising out of the ashes of his death mirrored the Phoenix of mythology so why shouldn't something like a vampire and a unicorn be real as well? Perhaps all these mythological beings of the past had actually been mutants. It made sense if you thought about it. in fact Lori's control of electricity could even fit with Zeus' ability to throw lightening bolts. Maybe someone like Lori had been the inspiration for that god like being so many centuries before. "Better not mention that thought to Lori... I wouldn't want her head to swell."
It made complete sense that he would want to meet them, but for some reason the idea caught Lori by surprise.
"Hunter is... well, I don't know where he is. He's in the wind most of the time from what I can tell and a bit unstable, in my opinion." And by unstable, she meant that he'd flip flopped his moral ground enough times that Lori wasn't even sure if Hunter knew what he stood for anymore. He was better off gone. "That man is a whirlwind of charisma, but add in a heap of confused ideals and I get chills. Last time he was around, he tried recruiting off my people for some kind of hippy zen BS."
Sebastian was another matter entirely. Lori leaned back into the cushions of her chair back. The guest chairs were metal and uncomfortable for a reason. This was a room for getting work done. Not long, loquacious bonding. "Sebastian used to be the resident healer here at the Sanctuary. He's off on some crusade or another, but he is in the city. I could have him tracked down for you if you like."
In actuality, Lori already knew where he was if not exactly, then generally. He hadn't strayed too far from a specific pattern these last few months. Lori just didn't want to sound like she tracked all mutants simply because she had made Sebastian into a pet project of hers. "Just ran into him at church the other day, in fact." The Order leader shrugged her shoulders in a generally amicable way.
One of the immortals could be scratched of the list. Apparently Hunter was off the grid somewhere doing who knew what. Momentarily Paul wondered whether Hunter was the vampire or the unicorn but then he set that question aside. Really, it didn't matter. He was willing to meet either of them or even both of them had they been available. The fact that Lori considered Hunter unstable was an interesting note but not particularly relevant. If he had been around Paul still would have tried to meet with him but since he wasn't Paul could instead focus completely on the other man. Sebastian.
"I would definitely like to meet Sebastian if you can find out his location, but you mentioned crusade. What sort of thing is this Sebastian crusading for?" Paul asked, his eyes narrowing the teeniest amount. The chair he was in was rapidly growing uncomfortable but he had learned to survive a little discomfort. The gathering of Intel was worth whatever discomfort he might go through so long as it turned out to be useful in some way.
"Just ran into him at church the other day, in fact."
So Sebastian was in some way a religious man. That could be good or that could be bad. There were plenty of good people that followed religious ideals and made the world a better place but there were also plenty of zealots and idealists that clung with their religious ideals with such fervor and tenacity that it just messed up the balance of things. "I wonder what category he would fall in?" Paul wondered silently to himself before actually voicing his next question, "What church did you see him at? He might be staying in that general vicinity."
"I can find Sebastian for you." With the determination and resourcefulness Lori had, she could likely find anyone she put her mind to finding. Especially in New York.
"I can make some calls and see if I can't get you an exact answer, but if you would rather seek him out yourself you could just follow Noel home." Lori spread her hands out in front of her to denote her inability to understand eactly how or why it had come to this. "You know Noel, right? She's been a good security at Faust Pharms since you found her for me. They live together, she and Sebastian."
As for what crusade he was on... "I can't vouch for his philosophies because I didn't stop to question his rhetoric. Just crossed paths. A little hi and how are you." and a whole lot of here fight this random guy. "The church is just a couple blocks from here next to the highway." Noel and Sebastian were close on hand. Lori liked that.
Lori's confidence was definitely one of her finer qualities. No matter what problem Paul had seen her encounter, she was always completely positive she could handle it. It was a confidence that bordered on being over confident but since Paul had never seen her fail at anything she had set out to do how could it be called over confidence? Could a person really be over confident when they succeeded?
"Noel is living with Sebastian?" The surprise was obvious in his voice though Paul was not really sure why he was surprised. Perhaps it was just because the chances of Noel randomly meeting another immortal was so slim but perhaps it wasn't as odd as it seemed. Katrina had met all three of them as had Lori apparently. Perhaps immortality was not as strange as it seemed. As long as none of them started going all crazy and coming after him like an episode of Highlander then Paul wasn't really going to worry about it. "I'm not surprised she's a good security person but the fact she's found a man to live with in so little time with her memory problems... impressive."
And the fact that the church was only a few blocks away from the Sanctuary was interesting. Paul had already seen that Lori was very protective about Sanctuary territory but yet she was OK with the particular church. Was it simply a church that Sebastian attended or was it a church that he was actually running? If he was running then what religion was being practiced there? Paul had never been a religious person but he could respect those that held to whatever beliefs they might have, as long as those beliefs didn't involve hurting anyone else.
"What's he like?" That was perhaps the most important question Paul had asked all day. "Is he a zealot of some sort, a holy warrior, a murderer, or just your average person that wants to be left alone?"
Found a man to live with... that was interesting phrasing that earned Paul an eyebrow raise.
"I would say that Sebastian is kind but he can also be strict if that makes sense? I don't really understand the relationship he has with Noel, but really it isn't my place." Though clearly something about the situation bothered Lori. Whether the part that bothered her was that it wasn't her place to meddle or that she didn't understand it in the first place was vague.
Lori had observed Sebastian stop practically mid-swing at Noel's request. She clearly had some sway with the unicorn. "Also, I would say he's a bit old fashioned. He carries a sword so maybe that puts him in the holy warrior category?"
It seemed that Paul wouldn't need Lori to be calling her super special spy Kaitlyn. That was good in order to help maintain her spy's position and secrecy but there were times when Lori missed the girl. She would have welcomed the excuse. "Anything else I can help you with?"
Kind but strict and carrying a sword. Who did that anymore? Who carried a sword anymore? Swords had been out since long before Paul had been born. Just how old was Sebastian anyway?
"Anything else I can help you with?"
And with that it was apparent that this meeting was over. Lori was remaining pleasant but something about the way the question was phrased seemed to indicate that it was time for Paul to go. Good enough. He had delivered the paintings and also gained the information that he had been looking over. All in all Paul felt like this had been a very productive afternoon.
"I can't think of a thing." Paul responded with a brief smile before he rose back up to his feet, "Thank you very much for the information and I hope you enjoy the paintings. I'll have those papers to you in just a few days." If he had needed to rush things he probably could have gotten the false paper work even faster but Lori didn't seemed to be in any rush so a few days should work quite nicely. He could deliver them to Lisa and then be back on his way with with very little delay.
"Maybe next time I'll surprise you with those dinner plans." The teasing tone had returned to his voice as he prepared to make his exit, "Take care of yourself Lori and don't hesitate to contact me if you need me for anything."
