The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Casey’s reply was hopeful, not excited as Lance would have hoped. The teen wondered whether Casey was having second thoughts about the offer.
As the traffic light finally turned green, the car continued on its journey towards New York City. Casey returned her concentration on her driving and the road. Silence once again fell between the passengers of the car.
“Put it on whatever station you want.”
Casey offered Lance as she turned on the car radio, which happened to be tuned into a news network at that moment.
Lance tilted his head towards Casey, ”Let’s just leave it there for now,” he replied, politely turning down the offer with a smile.
“So, I know you ran into the church for shelter, but do you normally go to church?”
Casey’s question caught Lance off guard. He had not been attending church regularly since his mother died. It was his way of rebelling for his mother’s untimely death. However, prior to that sad incident, Lance had been a regular church-goer. He rarely missed Sunday service at their neighborhood church. His aunt regularly reminded him to attend church service, after his mother's death, but she never forced him to do it.
The voice of the news reporter was the only sound in the car for a few moments as Lance mentally figured out how to answer the question without evoking more questions...
”Well, yeah. But not regularly...” Lance finally answered with a shrug. It was not exactly the truth, but it was not a lie either. It’s better that way... She need not know the whole truth, the teen mentally reasoned out.
Lance was mentally debating whether to explain further or just leave his answer as is, when the news anchor reported an on-going anti-mutant rally in New York City. Apparently the group’s earlier attempt at a “peaceful” protest turned violent. Lance hoped that this supposed peaceful protest will not turn violent as well, knowing the number of mutants living in New York City.
Casey asked Lance how he felt about the whole mutant issue. She threw the question casually, but her slight reaction to the news report did not escape the teen.
Lance had to be careful now. The question struck closer to home than Casey realized. He wasn’t sure whether she was one of those anti-mutant humans, pro-mutant or a mutant herself.
”I just can’t understand why some people can’t realize that mutants are not very much different than they are...” Lance answered, trying to keep his tone of voice even. ”I mean, mutants share the same basic physiology as ordinary humans, they have the same needs - both physical and emotional as ordinary humans. Granted that mutants have abilities, but castigating them for their gifts only makes mutants hate humans... and the hatred brings about thoughts of violence... and mutant violence produces more human hatred. The cycle will not stop unless both sides understand one another, and accept each other for who they are... for what they are.” The teen was surprised that he could have delivered such a monologue as what has just escaped his lips.
The only problem he had with the monologue was that he might have inadvertently exposed himself as a mutant... Hopefully not.
Lance politely declined the offer to tune the radio into whatever station he wanted, a teen picking the news over the latest pop songs, an unusual but refreshing occurrence.
”Well, yeah. But not regularly...” Lance answered after a moment of hesitation, he didn’t seem too enthusiastic about the subject.
”I just can’t understand why some people can’t realize that mutants are not very much different than they are. I mean, mutants share the same basic physiology as ordinary humans, they have the same needs - both physical and emotional as ordinary humans. Granted that mutants have abilities, but castigating them for their gifts only makes mutants hate humans... and the hatred brings about thoughts of violence... and mutant violence produces more human hatred. The cycle will not stop unless both sides understand one another, and accept each other for who they are... for what they are.”
Casey was both surprised and impressed with Lance’s astute statement, “Well, when you run for president you have my vote” she said encouragingly, scarcely able to believe she had just heard that speech from a teenager still attending school, she figured Lance looked 16 to 18 years old.
“I couldn’t of said that better myself” she continued, “You sound passionate about that, if only more people felt that way and actually did something about it, the world would be a much safer place to live” she added with heartfelt sincerity.
Casey looked over at her passenger with a faint hopeful smile across her lips, “That’s the kind of person who’s going to make a difference to the future, for the generations to come...” To Casey, Lance looked young and innocent as he gazed out of the window, but he seemed mature, even a little profound, not something you can say about many teenage boys, not the ones Casey had been in high school with anyway. Casey was beginning to like this kid.
Despite everything the idea that Lance might be a mutant himself still did not enter Casey’s mind, she usually picked up on these things quickly, but she was having bouts of insomnia the pas few months and her brain was a speed or two slower today, besides she hadn’t had her usual doses of coffee today.
Not long latter the pair found themselves in New York, not too far from their destination. They also found themselves slowing to a crawl in New York traffic, Casey began absentmindedly fiddling with her dog tags as the car moved around walking speed at the best. Though they did not have far to go Casey figured at this speed it would be a while before the pair reached their destination, “We have been in the car for hours, do you want to stop and stretch your legs for a while?” Casey asked her passenger, she could use a break herself.
Lance still had not recovered from the impromptu speech he had given about his stand in the human-mutant relationship issue.
“Well, when you run for president you have my vote.”
Casey’s comment snapped Lance out of his daze. The teen flashed Casey a half-smile. He was not sure if she was serious or just teasing him.
“I couldn’t of said that better myself. You sound passionate about that, if only more people felt that way and actually did something about it, the world would be a much safer place to live.”
Casey’s follow-up statement had proven that she had been serious about her earlier statement. But, nah... politics was never one of strong points. The earlier half-smile has now evolved into a full one.
Lance returned his attention to the passing scenery. Though through his peripheral vision, he had caught his companion regarding him with a smile across her lips.
Lance wondered what Casey was thinking while studying him. He felt nervous under her gaze.
The remainder of their road trip was shared in silence, with the exception of the news anchor’s voice reporting updates on the “peaceful” anti-mutant gathering presently happening in New York over the car radio.
The two eventually entered New York City proper and found themselves in the middle of a river of motor vehicles. Sadly, the river was moving slower than a sleepy snail.
Lance noticed that Casey had begun fiddling with her dog tags. He could sense the impatience starting to set in on his companion.
”If you plan on staying here on a permanent basis, better get used to these...” he advised Casey sympathetically, tilting his head towards the monstrous vehicular snarl around them in emphasis. ”Could actually be worse, you know...” the teen added not taking his eyes from the mass of vehicles around them.
“We have been in the car for hours, do you want to stop and stretch your legs for a while?”
Lance smiled at Casey’s suggestion, ”Sure thing. And while we’re at it, let’s grab ourselves some lunch, shall we?”
“If you plan on staying here on a permanent basis, better get used to these...”
Casey just smiled a week half smile at Lance’s advice. “Permanent basis?” Casey had not stayed in the same place for more than four days since residing in the U.S. Casey figured it was better if she kept moving, she wouldn’t form any relationships with people that way.
Casey just raised an eyebrow at Lance’s second comment, the thought of worse traffic was not worth thinking about.
”Sure thing. And while we’re at it, let’s grab ourselves some lunch, shall we?”
“Okay” Casey agreed, she did feel a little peckish.
A short time later Casey actually managed to find somewhere to park, she was given to understand that is a rear convenience in New York.
Once parked Casey got out of her vehicle, “That’s better” it felt good to be standing, Casey then locked the doors after her passenger was out.
“Come on, I’ll buy you a New York pretzel if you like, I was told “if you go to NY buy a pretzel” Casey said with a tiny smile, she was actually a little excited at the thought of seeing New York for the first time, she had heard quite a bit about it, all mostly good.
Casey let Lance take the lead to wherever he wanted to go, be it to get a pretzel or something else. It seemed the logical thing to do, he knew the city, Casey did not.
Casey followed the teen through the crowded streets, Lance seemed to be walking among the crowd with natural ease, while Casey felt like a car going the wrong way on a busy motorway. She strain to keep at Lances speed as the natives failed to notice her existents and her effort to simply walk along the pavement.
After a few minutes Casey began getting the hang of weaving through the crowd. Once being able to keep up with her companion with greater ease, Casey began taking in all the sights and smells properly, she marvelled at the architecture, the sea of multicultural faces, the odd fête only found in New York, like a true tourist Casey even found herself saying, “Look at that” to Lance once or twice as they walked along, even thought he had probably seen the features a thousand times.
“Come on, I’ll buy you a New York pretzel if you like, I was told ‘if you go to NY buy a pretzel’.”
Lance nodded to Casey’s offer. Glancing around their parking area, the teen did not see any pretzel vendor in the area, although he did remember a nearby store that sells the said New York delicacy.
Motioning for Casey to follow him, Lance weaved through the throng of pedestrian. It was the last day of the weekend so a lot of New Yorkers were taking the opportunity to do some last minute shopping.
His companion soon caught up with him having learned how to weave through the oncoming pedestrian flow.
“Look at that.”
Lance smiled as Casey repeated the phrase several times over en route to the pretzel place that the teen remembered.
Turning the corner, Lance stopped... dismay evident on his face. The pretzel store was deep within a mass of people... the anti-mutant gathering.
NYPD was on the scene to ensure that the protest will remain as “peaceful” as the organizers claimed it to be. There were also a number of by-standers curiously looking at the throng of protesters.
”Stay close to me,” Lance whispered to Casey, as he began to slowly weave through the mass of protesters, moving towards the pretzel store.
Lance made his way confidently towards the pretzel store, he seemed to know where he was heading so Casey just quietly followed him without question.
The pair turned the corner and Lance stopped almost dead in his tracks, Casey immediately stopped behind him. The pair displayed an expression of dismay and Casey’s moderately good mood instantly plummeted.
Casey felt like she had walked into a wall as a flurry of negative emotions and memories filled her when she and Lance saw the group of protestors. The group was comprised of a vast range of people from soccer moms to bikers, all chanting anti mutant phrases like, “Mutants out of our schools” , and most where holding makeshift signs with similar slogans. The police that where present seemed on edge as they stood by ready to spring into action at a moments notice.
Casey felt as if the group was address her directly, it felt like their eyes where gazing intently at her like they knew she was a mutant some how .
”Stay close to me,” her companion whispered, taking the words right out of her mouth. She did not know if he had said that for her good or for his own, but Casey stuck close to the teen in a protective manner, she had seen how quickly these situations could turn dangerous.
The pair began to push through the crowd and Casey decidedly straitened herself, she was not going to let this mob intimidate her.
Once inside Casey ordered two pretzels and two drinks. $27.50 was all the money she had to her name after paying, “That will pay for gas, better hope kiddo’s gig offer comes off”.
She watched the crowd of protestors as she ate,“Where do they want mutants to go?” Casey asked Lance, it was more a rhetorical question than anything.
“Let’s get out of here” Casey suggested once they had finished eating, she did not want to stick around any longer than necessary.
The pair left the store and headed away from the protestors, then with out warning a bomb detonated in the centre of the protest group. In a lightning quick reaction Casey instinctively grabbed Lance and pushed him to the ground, placing herself partly over him for his safety. She had partly dived but had been partly blown forwards the by the force of the explosion as well.
“Are you okay” she asked the teen, she was shaken, but calm thanks to her military training.
By now the police had snapped into action as people began screaming , panicking.
Casey looked over to where the explosion had come from, things didn’t seem quite right. There was no mark on the ground where the explosion had come from, people where burned, injured, unconscious...possibly dead. But no one had been blown apart, there was little or no damage outside the group of protesters and come to think of it the force that had blown Casey forwards felt like ripples, what ever had just exploded was not a regular bomb.
Lance gratefully accepted the pretzel and drink Casey offered him.
Contrary to what the organizers of the “peaceful” rally claim, the throng of protesters outside the store was far from being peaceful.
“Where do they want mutants to go?”
Casey's question was obviously in relation to the glaring slogan: "Mutants out of our schools" painted in bright crimson and being held by several protesters. Lance shrugged his shoulders in answer to Casey’s question. Thankfully there was Xavier’s Sister School to cater for mutant students...
“Let’s get out of here.”
The teen welcomed Casey’s suggestion to leave the area, after they had finished their respective meals.
They were practically sitting in the middle of a potential danger zone. The earlier they leave, the better it will be for them.
The two of them exited the store and walked back in the direction they had come from several minutes ago.
They haven’t gone for more than a few feet from the door of the pretzel store when a loud explosion rocked the middle of the protest.
Lance found himself being pushed towards the ground by Casey. His companion had dropped on top of him, her body providing cover from the explosion.
“Are you okay?”
”Yeah... I think... Thanks.”
The protesters were now in a panic. Screams were immediately followed by shouts and running footsteps.
The police immediately went into action. Trying to institute an orderly dispersal to the gathering and at the same time, get medical assistance to those injured.
As Casey stood up to survey the area, Lance finally got a chance to see the damage done by the explosion. A number of protesters were injured, while others were slumped on the street unconscious, or maybe even dead.
Lance was not an experienced fighter, but he had been in the middle of at least two explosive manifestations of his power and something about the whole scene did not feel right. Then it hit him... ground zero did not have a crater!
But before he could do anything, several police officers were already escorting them away from the area.
They had reached the corner of the street when a second explosion detonated. This time, a little closer to where they were. The resulting shockwave sent those around them flying. Luckily, Lance was quick enough to pull Casey behind the corner of the building, which absorbed the brunt of the explosive force.
As the shockwaves dissipated, Lance peered from the corner of the building to see what damage the second explosion had left behind.
What he saw, however, was a man, wearing a rather worn trench coat, running towards their general direction and being chased by several police officers.
”Yeah... I think... Thanks.” Lance said a little shaken but uninjured.
The pair had barely gotten to their feet when the police ushered them away from the site.
As they reached the corner another explosion set off and Casey felt Lance immediately yank her around the corner out of harms way, just as swiftly as she had toppled him moments ago, “Thanks kid” Casey said sounding a little unsettled, that unexpected blast was a little too close for comfort.
As the thanks escaped her lips a man in a warn trench coat began running towards and eventually past the pair with police on his tail.
In fact as he ran past, Casey saw he did actually have a tail, or something that looked like one. “What is it with bad guys and trench coats?”.
But the police pursuit did not last long, a small orange sphere materialized in midair, in front of the pursuing officers seemingly out of nowhere, it detonated letting off a very, very controlled explosion and series of nasty shock waves as with the two earlier blasts. This time however the mutant let off a less hurtful assault, it wan not meant as an attack, it was to escape.
Casey raised a concerned eyebrow as she witnessed what ill effects the blast had on the police, “God help them” she began to pray as she went to rush to their aid, but a nearby paramedic immediately began giving the officers medical attention, by now a handful of ambulances had already arrived to the scene and more where on their way.
Without a word Casey began legging it after the mutant who was about to disappear behind a corner, she was not going to let him get away if she had a say in the matter.
Casey began closing the gap between herself and the mutant with impressive speed, by now she did not know where Lance was and she did not look back to see, she was fixated on not letting the perpetrator out of her sight... She could worry about the teen latter.
Casey followed the mutant around the corner and it was not too long before he noticed he was still being pursued, “Despotic tyrants!” The mutant mumbled to himself, “GO AWAY!” he shouted in the same breath.
Ignoring his warning Casey continued racing after the mutant, prepared for an explosive attack at any moment, she just hoped he did not have anything else up his sleeve.
Ooc: Sorry for the delay, I have been unwell. But I’m feeling a lot better now
What he saw, however, was a man, wearing a rather worn trench coat, running towards their general direction and being chased by several police officers.
= 0 = 0 = 0 =
Before Lance can lead Casey away from their place of hiding, the man rounded the corner and ran past them, with the police still hot on his tail. Wait, was that a tail beneath the trench coat?
The chase had reached about the middle of the building’s façade when an orange colored ball of energy materialized between the man and the police officers. A small explosion soon followed, causing the pursuing officers to be thrown off their feet. The man shot a quick glance behind him and continued running.
Casey had already run towards the thrown police officers before Lance could stop her. But before she can get to them, a team of paramedics who just arrived at the scene had gotten to them first.
Instead of stopping and going back, Casey went after the fleeing mutant.
”Cas-!” Before Lance can call Casey’s attention, the woman had continued the pursuit of the other mutant, who was trying to make it to the corner of the block. ”Ah, hell!” The teen muttered under his breath as he bolted after his companion. Why the hell is she chasing after that mutant? What hopes does she have of taking him on?
Ignoring the tug for self-preservation, Lance increased his speed to reach Casey before she harms herself with her bravado. He was not the type to bail out on someone who might have has certainly bitten off more than she can chew.
Lance tried his best to close the gap between him and Casey, but the woman simply was running faster than he was. She had even managed to close the gap between her and the fleeing mutant, before he turned the corner.
All sorts of warning went off in the teen’s head. A blind corner was the perfect spot for an ambush and if his companion was not careful, she’d probably run dead smack into one. Thankfully, no explosions occurred.
Lance had just reached the corner when he heard the man shout...
”GO AWAY!”
But from the looks of it, Casey did not hear, or was ignoring, the man’s warning, as she still continued to pursue him.
The quick glance the man threw towards Casey was all the warning that Lance had before another orange sphere materialized, a few feet, in front of his companion.
With her present speed, Lance surmised, Casey will not have time to avoid the forth coming blast.
An orange ball appeared in front of Casey ready to explode, Casey however was not caught off guard, in a split second reaction she went sideways and merged into the side of a building, obviously using her mutant powers to do so. Once she heard the bang Casey came out of the wall and continued the pursuit determinedly.
She felt a little groggy from the shock waves that had impacted the wall she used for protection, but that hardly slowed her down.
however she knew she could not take too many more of those, she needed a plan.
It did not take her long to form one, taking a gamble she run down a side street hoping to cut the mutant off.
As she turned Casey noticed Lance behind slowly catching up, he was not as fast as her but few people where. "Don't to anything stupid kid" she thought, she had been trained to handle this kind of situation, the odds where her companion had not, he was probably trying to earn his "stopping bad guy's" merit badge, on the other hand he did seem to have a good head on his shoulders so Casey left him to his own devices and continued with her own plan.
As Lance had feared, the orange ball of energy exploded as Casey neared it. But the woman surprised him by going through the wall of the building to avoid the blast. So, she was also a mutant.
The sound of shattering glass brought Lance back to his present predicament. He found himself scampering behind a parked car to avoid the brunt of the shockwave headed in his direction. The car he was hiding behind, lurched as the shockwave barreled past.
Taking a quick glance from his hiding place, Lance spotted Casey once again running after the other mutant. She had apparently stepped out of the wall and resumed the chase.
Lance scrambled to his feet and quickly followed.
Casey had quickly gained her speed and was once again closing the gap between her and the man. Lance on the other hand, was now feeling the strain of sprinting after the two.
His companion glanced towards his direction before ducking into a side street.
Lance momentarily wondered at what Casey had in mind, but then realized that she might be planning on heading the man off.
So the best was to help her was to keep running after the man, hoping to eventually catch him between Casey and himself in a pincer trap.
Casey bound down the side street while Lance continued on the mutants trail, after dodging the shock waves.
Casey put on a sprint to ensure she would cut the mutant off and like her companion Casey was starting to feel the strain.
She reached the end of side street and stepped right out on the delinquent mutant, causing him to come to an abrupt stop, “Don’t even think about it” Casey said a little out of breath.
After getting over the initial shock of seeing one of his pursuers in front of him, the mutant of course ignored her statement and turned to run the other way... only to find Lance blocking his path after taking only a few steps.
The mutant rapidly looked back and forth between the duo, he realized he was trapped. “How about we do this the easy way?” Casey asked, a lame question but one she felt there was no harm in asking...just on the off chance.
The mutant simply hissed in response, a hateful glance in his eye.
The mutant instantly lashed out and began thrashing his whip like, ball-ended tail at the pair, trying to keep them at a distance. Casey promptly stepped back to avoid the swipe she would have otherwise received, she just hoped the mutant was not resistant to his own blasts, if he was the situation could get very ugly.
Casey attempted to draw near to the mutant a couple of times in vain, he just swiped at her every time she moved. Casey remained blocking the mutants path in stand by mode, ready to jump on any moments of opportunity that might arise, as she tried to formulate a plan of action.
Casey looked to Lance as if to say ,“any Ideas?” She knew the three of them could not just stand there all day.
Lance was at the verge of collapsing from the strain of trying to rundown the fleeing mutant. But he had to hang on for a little while longer if Casey’s plan was to succeed... if that was her plan.
C’mon, kid... the inner voice sounded in his head. You gotta realize that your friend just ditched you... Left you to face an angry violent mutant alone...
But before the inner voice could continue, Casey appeared in front of the other mutant, causing him to suddenly stop.
“Don’t even think about it.”
The mutant tried to double back, but stopped upon seeing Lance blocking his way.
The trapped mutant glanced at Casey and then at Lance. It looked like the man was trying to look for a way out.
After all the destruction the erring mutant before him had caused, Lance was not about to let the man get away that easily.
“How about we do this the easy way?”
The man uttered an angry hiss in response to Casey’s question. He glared at Casey and Lance with hate-filled eyes.
Before either the teen or his companion could make a move, the man lashed out with his whip-like, ball-tipped tail that he had been hiding under the trench coat. The tail was long enough to reach either Lance or his companion. And if he was not careful, would be very painful if it hits.
The mutant continued to thrash about with its tail, keeping the duo at bay.
Glancing at his surroundings while avoiding the tail, Lance took some measure of relief from the fact that the few humans in the area had quickly fled once the man had unleashed his tail. That at least, minimized the chance of innocent by-standers being attacked by the angry mutant.
Lance caught Casey looking at his direction. The teen was not sure if he correctly understood what his companion was trying to get across... that they needed a plan, and fast. NYPD will be there any minute. And since a mutant was involved, agents from the Mutant Related Crimes Division might be the ones to respond.
Lance quickly moved out of reach of the mutant’s whip-like tail. Once safely out of reach, the teen formed his lips as if to whistle, then began sending a series of pulsating infrasonic waves towards the unknown mutant. His intent was to incapacitate the mutant then let the police do their work.
By the fourth pulse, the mutant had fallen under the influence of the subsonic waves and began to wobble unsteadily, eventually dropping to his hands and knees.
Lance kept up the assault, despite the fact that he was slowly beginning to feel the backlash of his power. The teen could only hope that the other mutant loses consciousness before he does.
Casey seemed to be in a standoff with the delinquent mutant, he wan not going to let her advance and she was not going to let him escape, neither was her companion judging by the way he was blocking the mutants path determinedly.
Then something strange happened, the mutant began to become unsteady. Casey looked on with caution, this could be a trick, then she noticed Lance’s lips, he looked to be whistling but there was no tune coming out. The mutant soon fell to his hands and knees, Casey knew Lance was causing this but she didn’t know how, it didn’t really matter she could ask him latter.
Casey swiftly moved in and subdued the mutant, she placed a knee on his back and manipulated his arms and tail, putting him in a pacifying position similar to one the police would use, this guy was not going anywhere. That almost seemed too easy, “Good job” Casey said commending Lance for his efforts.
She noticed she felt rough as she stayed holding the mutant, she didn’t know if it was because of the shockwave she had endured, or if it was related to whatever it was Lance had done to subdue the mutant.
“There is never a cop around when you need one” Casey thought as she stayed holding the mutant, but before she could verbalize this thought two officers from the mutant division arrived, “I stand corrected”
The officers brushed past Lance and cuffed the mutant, pushing Casey out of the way. The officers raised the mutant to his feet, “We need you to stay here please, an officer will be along in a minute to take a statement” one cop said to the pair, then he and his partner proceeded to haul the man away.
Casey stood there catching her breath, she looked over at the teen who was also panting, his smart funeral clothes where a little dirty and crumpled and his hair was also messy, he did not have that snobbish look that he had when Casey met him this morning, in fact he looked unwell, Casey did not feel so great herself.
Casey was just about to ask him if he was okay when five muscular protestors began to approach the pair with an unfriendly look.
The seconds passed-by ever so slowly for Lance. The queasy sensation was becoming stronger. Any moment now, the teen felt that his body would collapse from the strain it was going through. Luckily, Casey moved in to physically restrain the mutant.
Lance immediately ceased bombarding the mutant with his subsonic waves, fearing that Casey might be affected by it as well.
“Good job.”
Before he could respond to Casey’s words, Lance felt his knees buckle and the teen began to throw-up on the gutter. It was not really a dignified thing to be doing, but he was no longer able to hold it in. At least, it lessened the queasiness that he was feeling.
Running footsteps from behind him caused the teen to momentarily stop the mess he was doing as he looked towards the area he had come from. Two officers from the NYPD MRC Division, or at least Lance hoped they were from the MRC Division, rushed past his location to quickly apprehend the erring mutant.
As one of the two officers hauled off the mutant, the other asked Casey and by extension, Lance, to stay to give their statements to one of his fellow officers who will be with them in a while.
Lance picked himself up from the pavement. He has had enough indignity for one day. The teen noticed Casey approaching but then suddenly stopped, looking past his location.
Tilting his head in the same direction, Lance saw what made Casey stop in her tracks. Five burly men were approaching them... hatred in their eyes. He did not know where they had come from, nor was he sure what their intent were, only that it was not good.
Before Lance could take any action, the nearest of the five roughly shoved him to the ground. The impact of the fall had dazed the teen.
By the time Lance had regained his senses, four of the men were on Casey, with the fifth serving as look-out.
