The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>"いい なああ—"
The girl gave the ghost a blank look. ...What?
>>"I am Ghost. Jude's guardian. Please take care of Jude, Kaitlyn."
Ghost wasn's Jude's mother or babysitter, but his guardian. Like she was Jude's bodyguard or something. By extension, this meant that Jude had to be guarded from something. 'Taking care of Jude,' as Ghost had put it, thus sounded like a gravely serious request. With a nod and a "Yes ma'am," the kid tried to show that she understood how serious this was in the small time that she had until Jude pulled her back into the playground.
A shout of "En garde!" let everyone know that the Princess and the heroic ex-pirate had returned, armed and dangerous, pockets full of their treasure.
Not a single one of them cared. The other former pirates had moved on to other things. Kaitlyn felt a pair of hands give her a quick shove forward. "You're it!" The younger boy who had tagged her was already running away.
The red-head turned towards Jude, putting her hand on his shoulder. "I guess we're playing tag now. You wanna play too?" She took a few steps back, sure to keep herself out of Jude's reach," 'cause If you do, I just tagged you."
...You've heard stories about me? Don't listen to them! It's safe to sit next to me, really!
He had a stick. She had just tagged him. It was so, so tempting to just turn and whap her. He had his sword, but— she was a girl! Jude sighed and hunched his shoulders. His stick fell from his hand and bounced soundlessly into the rough grass.
Then he DASHED with all the speed and strength in his 11 year old body and reached out his arm for the nearest unsuspecting boy who had stopped in to see his nanny for a juice box.
"You're it now!"
Then Jude abruptly changed directions and ran along toward Kaitlyn. His pants drooped with the weight of his (pirate) booty, but he didn't empty them. Those were treasures he aimed to keep. Besides... it looked like there were good hiding spots near the climbing concrete tube. Maybe they could dig a hole to hide that treasure.

Kaitlyn was glad that there weren't any tag-backs in this game. Or, at least, that she could declare that there weren't any tag-backs. Jude was a pretty fast runner, even with a bunch of random stuff treasure in his pockets. He didn't stay it for long. Nor did he seem like he was interested in playing tag for long; he swiftly took the opportunity to run off and do his own thing.
The girl stopped trying to keep track of who was 'it' and went to see what Jude was doing. Tag was stupid, anyway. Maybe he would let her have half of the cash in the treasure. It might even be enough for a subway ride, which would be great, since Worms only had so much cash left in his wallet before he was forced to leave the Sanctuary. Kaitlyn was running low on his funds.
She didn't have much time to act before Ghost's voice pierced the chaos of the playground. Jude had to leave. With a sigh given for the loss of yet another short-term friend, Kaitlyn pulled out her cellphone to check the time, only to find that it was entirely out of battery power. She didn't have a GPS any more, and she didn't know how to get home without one.
Despite her best efforts to keep her mutation under control, with a loud POP, panic turned her cellphone into a useless pile of silicon and plastic. Did anyone notice?
Maybe. The red-head wouldn't have noticed if everyone else decided to stop whatever they were doing to stare at her. She had to think:
How am I going to get home? What am I gonna do? What...
Was Jude still around? Hazel eyes scanned the playground for him and his guardian. Maybe they could help her out somehow. It wasn't as if she knew anyone else around here.
He had only a shallow hole dug when Ghost's voice came resounding around the playground. Jude's dark haired head popped up like a meerkat seeking danger. Blast. This leaf needed burying. Jude put the first yellow leaf of fall in his princess' hands. "Keep it secret. Keep it safe." Then he was hopping over the hole, over the pile of dirt and— whop! A loud crack had him landing face down into the pebbles that surrounded the play equipment.
The whole playground stopped what it was doing. Some mothers had ducked like someone had been shooting into the crowd.
"Jude?" Mother's voices called for their children, Ghost among them. Kids were in all ranges of response. Crying, shocked, back to playing...
Jude was back on his feet in no time, knocking a few rocks from where they had embedded in his cheek.
His eyes bugged at the pile of plastic that was once some kind of electronic. "Are you crazy?" Though he hardly waited for an answer. He grabbed her not plastic strewn hand and led her away from the crowd. They could look for the culprit elsewhere. "You shouldn't show off in public. Not around kids. Makes grownups all nervous."
"Jude!" He turned his head toward the call and then quickly back to his princess.
"Is your mom here too?" Because Kait looked like she might need a mom right about now.

Kaitlyn didn't find Jude; Jude found her. Before she could tell what was happening, he was already holding her hand, leading her away from the chaos that she'd just created.
It took the Sanctuary resident a few seconds to realize that using her mutation beyond the golden doors could make people upset. Judging by the way people were acting, she had just done something really stupid.
Stupid, stupid, stupid! She shook her head as she walked. Parents called out their children's names, and some people were staring at her. One of the smaller boys was poking his head out from behind a mother's legs to look at the red-head; he wanted his mom to protect him from the scary mutant. Kaitlyn saw the fear on his face and realized what he was afraid of.
She didn't know how to feel about that.
>>"Is your mom here too?"
The question caught her off guard. "No. I... uhh... don't have one."
No... mother? He opened to ask about a father but... The look her face said it all. "I don't have any of those either, but I have Ghost." He didn't waste any time in pulling his princess toward the voice shouting for him.
They looked a bit like Hansel and Gretle coming out of the woods together. "Are you alright?" The air elemental knelt and opened her arms to both children.
"She doezn't have anyone." Jude whispered in Ghost's ear as he hugged her.
Ghost pulled back some to look at both children in turn, one hand on each small shoulder. "Everyone has someone... Where did you come from, sweety?" The urge to smooth back Kaitlyn's red wavy hair was strong. She was a bit urchin-like. Ghost wanted to take her home and brush that hair.

Suddenly, Kaitlyn was part of a group hug with two people she had just met minutes earlier. Jude whispered something in Ghost's ear, but the girl couldn't tell what it was over the sounds of playing children and concerned parents.
More than one adult seemed to be giving the three a peculiar look. Kaitlyn didn't know what she was reading on their faces, but it made her feel unwelcome. They didn't want her here, playing with their kids.
Then the guardian pulled back, a snow-colored hand resting on each of the kids' shoulders. She looked at them with kind, brown eyes. The girl tried to concentrate on those eyes, to shut out the others.
>>"Everyone has someone... Where did you come from, sweety?"
"The Sanctuary." Where she wished she could be right now. Hidden away from those... looks.
"And you came here by yourself?" She shouldn't have been surprised. The Sanctuary took any mutant in, young or old, but they weren't responsible for them. Just a sort of holding place where vagabonds gathered.
"You know, I stayed there for a while." Not long, before the American internment camps, a long time ago. "There are some really good people there." Despite what other x-men might say. She had been shown kindness from Sanctuary residents time and time again. Maybe now it was time to return the favor.
Jude looked like he had something to say, but was holding his tongue. Instead he settled on, "If you have no parents, can you come to dinner?"
"That's a great idea." Ghost stood and held out a hand for each of them. "We can call the Sanctuary so no one will worry, if you like." Though, Ghost would rather see her go home to the Mansion, if she already had a place to stay and people to (in theory) look after her...

>>"And you came here by yourself?"
"Uhh... yeah." That wasn't so weird... was it?
Apparently not. And whatever the case, it was nice to meet another person who used to live in the Sanctuary. In a way, the Sanctuary was like one big family.
Now Jude and Ghost were asking Kaitlyn if she wanted to have dinner with them. "Sure!" she said without hesitation. As friendly as the Sanctuary dining staff might have been, they weren't exceptionally good at their job. Plus, she was making new friends.
Going home with strangers had been a pretty good policy for the girl so far.
...You've heard stories about me? Don't listen to them! It's safe to sit next to me, really!
Sure was enough for Jude. He put a fist in the air and shouted "YAHOO!"
"Hold my hands. It's not a far walk, but we will be crossing the street." Ghost arranged them one on either side and gathered up a hand each. Sebastian was in for a surprise. If he wasn't staying late at the library again, that was...
"What do you like to eat, Kaitlyn? Curry? Pot roast? Or maybe.... cucumber sandwiches?"
"Yuck! No way!" Jude wrinkled his nose from across Ghost's body. The group of them paused at the light and waited for the walk sign to show before continuing on.
It was a full three blocks walk, but they eventually found their way to the front of the clinic. Sebastian had left a note at the front desk. Staying late again. "Looks like it's just the three of us!" Ghost opened the door and Jude led the way up the rickety wooden stairs to where they lived.

Kaitlyn couldn't help but giggle at Jude's outburst. He was really excited about this.
With that, they left the playground, and certain glares, behind them. What a relief that was!
What does she like to eat? "Not cucumber sandwiches." She grinned and agreed heartily with Jude, then gave the question a bit more thought. "Uhh... I like curry."
Three blocks later, the walk was over. Ghost and Jude lived in a place called the Iris Clinic. Once they were through the front door, Kaitlyn examined her new surroundings: a waiting room with chairs and a front desk, just like in a normal doctor's office. Or maybe a little like the Sanctuary's Foyer.
"Is this place kinda like the Sanctuary?" she asked as she followed her hosts up the stairs.
...You've heard stories about me? Don't listen to them! It's safe to sit next to me, really!
Was it like the Sanctuary? Ghost unlocked the deadbolt and pushed the door open to allow the kids inside. "We do let people stay with us on occasion. Some even end up living here." Well. One. "We even share a healer with the Sanctuary so... yeah. We aren't too different. I'd never really thought of it that way."
"Ze Sanctuary only offers to mutants. Ze Mansion and zis house are for anyone. You are mutant. Ghost is mutant. I'm human."
Ghost shuffled the discussion toward the kitchen and kicked a stool into place in front of the sink so that the kids could each wash their hands.
"The explosion in the park was you, wasn't it Kaitlyn? What happened?"
Jude pulled Kaitlyn up next to him so that they could both sud up at the same time. He blew a few bubbles from his hands at Kaitlyn while Ghost drifted around the kitchen pulling the necessarily implements and ingredients from their respective hiding places.
"Kaitlyn, you're the guest. Would you like to stir the sauce or would you like to cut vegetables?"

This 'Iris' place would let in mutants and humans? Eyebrows furrowed. This was a weird idea, and it didn't sound like something that could work. Judging from what she'd heard from other Sanctuary residents, humans and mutants didn't get along very well.
But Jude isn't so mean...
She would have to think about this later; for now, Ghost was asking her a question. Kaitlyn answered, perceptibly ashamed of the answer, as she washed her hands. "Uhh... I accidentally blew up my phone. When I saw that it didn't have – hey! Quit it!" Failing to contain a giggle, Kaitlyn leaned away from Jude's bubbles and, in retaliation, tried to get some suds from her soapy hand onto his cheek.
When the two settled down, Kaitlyn continued a bit less uncomfortably: "Well, I lost control of my mutation cause I got worried cause my phone didn't have any battery left."
Apparently, being the guest meant that she could choose her job. Knives brought back bad memories. "I'll stir."
Accidentally blew up... that was an AWESOME ability! "One day I'm going to be a telepath! That izzn't cool like exploding sings, but— Hey!" Jude raised his shoulder and scrubbed bubbles off his cheek and onto his shirt as Kaitlyn finished her explanation. Battery out and... wait a minute. "You 'ave a phone?"
He turned to Ghost. "I'm getting one." And then hopped off the stool and accepted a pile of things that Ghost was holding out of the fridge.
Ghost rolled her eyes but only where the interior of the refrigerator could see. No. He was not.
A big pot sat on top of the stove. Ghost handed a big bar of what looked like slightly too yellow plastic wrapped chocolate to Kaitlyn. It certainly wouldn't smell like chocolate. "Turn the heat on to the back burner. Make sure it's on the medium setting and then break up the curry and put it in." She handed Kaitlyn a wooden spoon.
Jude, she sat dow at the table behind a cutting board with a vegetable knife. It had a wide blade and a rounded front edge. His task was carrots and he attacked them with single-minded ferocity. The tip of his pink tongue poked out of the corner of his mouth. Ghost sat next to him and started on the potatoes with a much more reasonable pace (and more even cuts). She kept one eye on both kids.
"I don't guess that you have a spare phone, Kaitlyn? Do I need to call someone for you?"

Kaitlyn did as she was told with practiced efficiency, all the while thinking about what Jude said about becoming a telepath. Or, rather, what the word "telepath" might mean. Did it have anything to do with psychopaths? Or maybe telephones? Did you have to go to a 'telepath school' to become one? Was it some sort of job? She was so engrossed in this that she almost didn't notice Ghost ask a question:
>>"Do I need to call someone for you?"
"You said you'd call someone at the Sanctuary so nobody'd worry," Kaitlyn reminded the 'guardian,' but she didn't quite understand why people would be worried about her.
"Oh, and... what's a telepath?"
