The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Elli's mother walked into the small combination kitchen/dining room, where her husband was sitting at the table with Kaine, Elli's eldest younger brother. "Hun, that was Elizabeth on the phone. She's bringing a guy friend with her today, just wanted to let us know she was almost here."
Elli's father blinked three times, slowly, and then told Kaine "Go get your brother and wait for your sister by the door, she's almost here." When Kaine had left, Elli's father went to a locked drawer in the kitchen, and Elli's mom sighed, then went to check that everything was spotless.
Cafas was in for a nasty surprise.
Elli was sitting next to Cafas, with the middle seat in between them, in the back of a cab going the distance from New York City to Philly, Elli's hometown. It was December 25th, and she was taking Cafas to meet her family during one of her few days off. She was not being given more work because she was a woman, or because she was new, but everyone in the force had to bear the burden of increased crime and decreased number of officers to deal with the crime.
So, they sat there in silence, their small talk storage completely dry. Elli hadn't mentioned anything about what had happened the last time they had gotten together, but as they rounded to corner and approached her family's house, she figured she had to say something. "Cafas, about last time... I've thought about it.. Just, meet my family, and we'll talk on the way back, okay?" Elli was so inept in situations like that, it almost made her nauseous. Oh, no, wait, that was just the cab driver's horrible driving.
Elli waited for Cafas to get out of the cab, and then scooted out across the seat after paying the fare to join him on the sidewalk. Before they could even take a step towards the door, it burst open like a firecracker and a streak of red-haired lightning hurtled towards Elli at warp factor 5. Her ten year-old brother James hit her with a flying hug so hard that she took a step back before lifting him up into a bear hug.
"Elli! Elli! You're home! I made you a present!" James got let down to the sidewalk, and then noticed that there was someone else there. He immediately reverted to his shy, scared self, and hid behind his 17 year-old brother Kaine, who walked at a much more dignified pace out to give his sister a hug.
"Heya, sis. How'v ya been?" Kaine too, then noticed Cafas, and turned to offer his hand for a shake. "Hello, you must be the boyfriend. Nice to meet you, dead meat!"
Elli laughed nervously at the dead meat comment, then said "He's not, really." Elli stopped, because she didn't really know what Cafas was to her at that point. "Well, let's go inside, I'm sure mom and pop are dying to see me." The brothers led Elli and Cafas inside the small abode, and immediately into the dining kitchen, where Elli's father sat at the table, cleaning his revolver.
"Your mother is in the living room, she want's to show you all the decorations. It's lovely to see you again Elli, we'll talk over dinner." He paused, waited until the group was almost out, then added "Mr. Cafas, a word, if you please."
Cafas sat in anticipation of a proper Christmas for the first time in a long time. He sported quite a few bruises and most of his bones felt like they had been throw several hundred metres to land heavily on the ground by a clay model of Cthulhu the night before. Which was very true. He also had a few minor burns and stitches in the back of his right hand, which was mandaged nicely. But that didn't seem like it would be an issue for Christmas with the Fletchers. After all, they had a cop for a daughter, how bad could they be. In a couple of minutes he would regret saying that. As they pulled up Cafas was a little worried by Elli's previous comment. Then the door burst open with a flurry of red haired ten year old and Elli hugging. Cafas was glad he wasn't her for a second. then the kid went all shy on him. Oh well.
'Yeah I guess I do have that sort of look to me huh?'
An older taller family member approached, although younger than Elli. Must be the other brother. He smiled pleasantly to the slightly shorter guy. he had to be younger than C.J. too. He was about the same height as Cafas a seventeen. good to know. "Hello, you must be the boyfriend. Nice to meet you, dead meat!"Friendly greeting. Boyfriend though... well no not really, but Elli did a better job than he would have of summing up the situation between them.
'Okay, why dead meat... Who have I pissed off this early in the day?'
Cafas was lead into the house. He followed rather willingly. He had left all weapons at home of course. So when Elli's father politely asked her to leave the room Cafas was a little worried. The revolver did nothing to help his fear levels. not that it was likely they were packing ceramic bullets, more that Elli had said nothing about feelings towards mutants in her family. "Mr. Cafas, a word, if you please." Cafas nodded and sat down, as he assumed was customary when guests were asked for a chat, even at gunpoint. He swallowed quietly in a rather worried fashion and really regretted not wearing his sunglasses, he really didn't have much choice but to let his eyes change, as even contact lenses never hid the extent of his colour changes. He figured honesty was the best policy anyhow.
'Oh... That's who I've pissed off.'
"Of course Mr. Fletcher, sir, a pleasure to meet you by the way." Cafas offered a hand to shake and hoped to hell he wasn't about to be shot, from point blank the heat would still hurt like hell. Alchemist was very worried about the conversation for some reason, although his eyes had changed to the bright shade of green outside, so it wouldn't have been noticeable that they changed yet, not that Lime was a common colour for eyes.
"Of course Mr. Fletcher, sir, a pleasure to meet you by the way."
Jim Fletcher nodded, and then shook the offered hand. He waited until Cafas was properly settled, and then he said "Now if I am to be understanding that you are dating my girl, then you need to be understanding the ground rules. I realize that she is a grown woman and can make her own decisions when it comes to men, but I reserve the right to intimidate said men." Jim was on a roll, and wouldn't be tolerating any interruptions.
"First off, absolutely no touching. I don't mean hand holding, you know what I'm talking about. I hear anything from Elli, you'd best be in China. Second, no mutant funky-shit on my girl. She says you're a mutant, and I ain't got nothing against your kind, but I don't know if you've got crazy mind mojo or what. Don't be messing with her head."
Jim pierced Cafas with a penetrating look that seemed to strip his flesh away to expose the soul underneath. "And third, most importantly, really, don't you dare hurt my girl. She's been heartbroken once before, and it damned near killed me to see her like that. It was so bad that she won't even talk about it to her family. Not even her old man." Jim stared at Cafas for a few moments longer, then smiled and stood. "I'm sure we'll get along just fine."
Cafas' fears were alleviated, he was not going to be shot. Instead he was going to be lectured on proper treatment of a young lady, not using mutant powers against her and not breaking her heart. Well he had no intention of any of that... well not the last two, the first of course at some stage he had thought about it, he was only male after all. His eyes went to their ever more frequent relieved parchment colour and settled there. They didn't feel they would be moving. "I'll follow those demands so long as there's life in me sir. Elli means a lot to me." He was going to shun the fact that they weren't technically together for now, it seemed best for the situation. And for Pete’s sake did his accent have to be so obvious? It pained him to admit it, but the American accents around him seemed to be making themselves less obvious in his ears. It was at least an improvement from the grating obviousness of them before that however. Silver linings and all.
'Sooo... Awkward.'
"Cafas, how about we join the family in the living room." Cafas stood as Mr Fletcher did and walked with him to the living room where apparently the whole gang were gathered. Alchemist was drawn straight to Elli. He looked at her and joking twitched. He figured it was man to man talk, no women required, so he would tell her on the ride home. What could he say? He was far too honest (and obvious when he wasn't) to not. However it seemed the fun was only just starting. The house was immaculately decorated. The lengths people went to for the celebratory seasons were amazing. He marvelled at the spectacle. His parent's certainly hadn't put so much effort into it. "The decorations are beautiful Mrs. Fletcher. Did you do this all yourself?" He knew how to suck up. Well that and he was quite amazed by it.
Elli was sitting in the living room, catching up withe her family and filling them in on what she had been doing lately, especially in her work as a cop. It had always been her father's dream to be a police officer, but he had never been able to achieve that goal. Both of her brothers and her parents were so proud of her. She noticed that none of the few small presents had been opened, and so she reached into her purse and withdrew two expertly wrapped packages, the smaller of which went to Jason, the slightly larger one to Kaine.
"Wow Elli! You got us presents! You shouldn't have!" They both eagerly tore into the presents, and both were pleasantly surprised with what they found. Kaine got the last book in a collection of funny books he was working on, and Jason got several figurines for his battered toy collection.
At that point, Cafas and Elli's father walked in. "The decorations are beautiful Mrs. Fletcher. Did you do this all yourself?"
Elli's mom laughed, a sound that beautifully resembled the tinkling of glass, and said "No, of course not, the boys did all the real work!"
Elli smiled as Cafas sat next to her, and whispered softly to him, so the others wouldn't overhear, "I also got you a present, I'll give it to you in the cab."
Cafas smiled to the boys as they ripped into their presents. He didn't have them presents unfortunately he did not know them well enough. He'd have asked for recommendations but well... yeah laziness and stuff. He sat down in an available spot next to Elli, who whispered vague hints of a present and a taxi. How odd, he had one for her too, what a koinkydink. The family all seemed to be doing well and happy and stuff. Being the only non-family member at family parties tended to make him awkward. He'd been in the position... twice. inclusive of the one he was in then. He decided to whisper back to Elli. "Okay, but I get to give you mine first." There were still presents unopened. Cafas assumed they were for elli. He really hoped one would be embarrassing, that would break the tension a little. But families didn't give that type of gift did they?
'Yeah, that is known as "Creepy". '
Alchemist settled back and watched the large one open his book and begin reading, the younger one staring adoringly at his own gift, which Cafas assumed he loved from the look on his face. Well women were good at thoughtful gifts. He tended to... not be. Though he thought he'd done very well at being thoughtful with the one for Elli. Just goes to show, selective thoughtfulness for those he gave a flying... rat for. It wasn't even a joke. It would have been fun to have a joke gift too, but for some reason scaring, hurting or otherwise causing distress to a girl he was potentially in a relationship with didn't seem wise till at least six months.
"Okay, but I get to give you mine first." Oh, so Cafas had gotten Elli a present as well?
"No fair, but fine." Elli said, smiling jokingly. "Hey guys, those for me?" Elli said indicating the few presents left unopened.
The family nodded, and Elli went through the process of opening the small, inexpensive presents. She got a wonderful card made by hand by James, a small, blank book for taking notes and such in while on the job from Kaine, and a small box from her parents that contained cubic zirconium earrings in the shape of shields. "Oh, they're lovely!" She exclaimed, putting them on immediately. "Thank you all so much!"
"It's no problem, dear, none at all. We're just glad to have you here!" He coughed slightly, eyed Cafas strangly, then said "But there's another present for you in the back, from your mother."
Elli smiled, and inwardly was hopping with joy. She had never gotten so much for Christmas before in her life. She was not really happy for that, mainly, but happy for the fact that her family finally had money to spare that they could afford more things, in no small part to her hard work. So she pulled out the present, sat on the couch next to Cafas, and tore into the paper. When she pulled out a set of lingerie, her cheeks transcended mere pinkish, and moved on to the blushingly divine level of OHMIGODMYFACEISONFIRE!!!! "I umm... ummm..." And with Cafas sitting right there, too.
Cafas watched happily as Elli tore through her gifts. It seemed she really appreciated it all, as for the not being fair well, his was gouging a hole in his leg so she would damn well put up with it. Then apparently there was one more package. It was a little out of sight, which Alchemist assumed was due to the amount the boys had received already, or something. When Elli practically dove for it C.J. became very aware that he had spent about half a minute staring at her butt. Not his fault, he wasn't the one who had stood up. She went for the gift as he moved his eyes to a less conspicuous position until he caught sight of her sitting in his peripherals. He looked across to see what she had gotten.
'Haha, if this isn't embarrassing then I put the embarrassing presents tradition down as an Australia only thing.'
As Elli opened the gift he watched her face go very red. He could practically feel the heat from where he was. Puzzled he looked down to the box. Then he choked a little. After that he did his best to hold a straight face and not laugh. Neither of which did he succeed at very well. The look on her face was absolutely priceless. His dignity was about to be shattered by the entire situation when he remembered the speech given to him not five minutes before. The threat of the gun made the laughter die before it could start. Not that he didn't silently giggle to himself. Mirth was written all over his face. Both his eyes, in an attempt to show the emotion, went tricoloured. Highlighter yellow, a light pink and a light green. All were present in both irises in evenly distributed triangles, minus the point, which would have met where his pupil was.
Elli barely heard her brother, Kaine, laughing his bleeding arse off in the background, nor did she hear her father's heavy sigh. She was focusing on the sound coming from the person next to her, wondering just what exactly Cafas was thinking. She finally mustered the courage too look at him, and saw the strangest color combination she had yet seen in his eyes. Oh mom, Elli thought, you just had to go there, didn't you? Elli was desperately hoping that Cafas wouldn't.. what? Wouldn't think she was shallow, or vain, or anything like that? Maybe.
Then, a small little sound gave Elli some hope. That sound was a barely-suppressed snort of laughter coming from Cafas, and it was almost music to Elli's ears. She laughed a little, nervously, and said "Thanks, mom." Then, much, much quieter, she whispered to Cafas "You are never going to let me live this down, are you?"
Alright, she was laughing, he could laugh too. He let out a few chuckles before she questioned his ability to remember funny events and use them for blackmail. Well no, he would never let her live it down, well, he'd likely forget all about it if she put it on but... yeah that was hormones kicking in again. He decided he liked Elli's family, despite the threats, her younger brother reminded him of him, her older brother had the same sense of humor so far and her parents were nothing like his. He just hoped the mutant relations issues wouldn't interfere. He had had enough of people he cared about trying to kill him. That was all in the past though.
'Now to strategically place a joke.'
"Depends how often I get to see it." Whispered Cafas past his laughing. He pated her on the back and laughed harder, the older of the two brothers and him didn't seem to be able to control it. The young mutant could feel his hands becoming rather energetic. It happened from time to time when he was suffering a strong emotion or an uncontrolable fit of laughter, he had to be careful not to touch anything made of metal. At least until the laughter subsided.
'Maybe a little too far with the joke, but I hope it makes her laugh.'
"Depends how often I get to see it." Cafas replied.
Elli sputtered, and almost choked on her own tongue with her laughing. Without a doubt, the entire group was hysterical, and it only showed how Cafas was beginning to almost become a part of the family already.
A ding sounded from the kitchen, as the laughter died down, and Elli's mom stood up, saying "Well, that'll be the brisket! Cafas and Kaine, you're strapping young boys, come help me carry the stuff to the table."
She then handed a wooden tray with several types of sauces to Kaine, and gave Cafas the single greatest honor in food preparation and serving: he got to carry the meat. She handed Cafas a steel pan full to the brim with delicious, mouth-watering brisket. The grease rolled off of the meat, and juices glimmered at the bottom of the pan. 1,000 million calories a bite, and Elli could just feel pimples popping up on her face just looking at the greasy mess.
Cafas was handed a trays of what had to be the most delicious, fattening, awesomest Christmas food he had ever seen. America was growing on him. as for being a strapping young man, well yes, he would need to be to carry said meaty goodness, it weighed a little more than him as far as he could tell. It was also very hot. He had to redirect all that rogue energy into lowering the heat conductivity of the metal, which was a good thing because, well, otherwise it would have melted. He was still laughing when he and Kaine placed their respective trays on the table, the rest already being set out apparently.
'Yum! Food! My kinda family.'
Cafas was shown to a seat, the space next to him left conspicuously empty. He had settled himself into just a pleasant smile and lack of laughing by that stage, eyes fading to yellow. He had to wonder why his eyes chose such unnatural colours for positive emotions. His smile faded until he felt rather calm, and then returned with the calm feeling, along with blue coloured eyes. He had once placed this as his natural colour, as he had had it up until his mutation manifested. Therefore, he reasoned, calm must be the absence of emotion. Either way a nice middle shade of blue it was, perfectly natural looking.
Elli grabbed plates and napkins and silverware and, doing a delicate balancing act she had much experience with in her youth, when she was the official table-setter, handed them out to each spot on the six-person table. By the time she was finished, everyone else was seated, which left a single seat empty, conspicuously between Cafas and her mother, while her father sat on Cafas' other side, and James sat across from the blank seat, leaving Kaine to face Cafas. She sat in her seat, and then waited for them to say grace.
"Ooh, I wanna say grace!" James said, and so they linked hands and bowed their heads. "God is great, god is good, thank you god for all our food, and Elli. Amen."
"Amen." Elli said, and then reached for the green beans. She plopped a good helping of that down on her plate, then passed it counter-clockwise to Cafas, and reached over to accept the brisket from her father. She almost immediately rested it on the edge of the table, so that she could fork a few pieces off without putting the entire weight of the brisket on her arm. She then passed it off to Cafas, and when all food had made the rounds, they dug in. For a few minutes there was nothing but the sounds of chomping, but once everyone settled down to a more moderate eating pace the chatter began. Elli's dad was talking with Kaine about the relative merits of Vin Deisel and Bruce Lee, James was telling Elli's mom about a project they were working on at school before the break, and so Elli and Cafas were left with nobody to talk to but eachother.
Elli took a few bites of brisket, content to just be with her family again. Her face radiated contentment, and she commented to Cafas "There is no place in the world I'd rather be than here. Even New York can't compare."
Cafas was chewing slowly and savouring his first home cooked meal not from the mansion in a long time. He tried not to melt his fork in delight. His eyes were almost gold. The rest of the family were engaged in conversations he knew nothing of. He listened intently to the way families were meant to be. Apparently he had missed out on a fair bit living in a mutant fearing family with no real religious background. The lack of faith in his childhood helped explain why the concept of God was so strange to him. But then, some had never been without it. It must make those people so sad every time a scientist comes along and shows how miracles could have been performed or how the universe really works.
'Their own fault really. This is delicious though.'
"There is no place in the world I'd rather be than here. Even New York can't compare."
Cafas swallowed and looked at Elli. She seemed sincere enough. Then again, New York in his opinion couldn't compare to a dog's gentleman's regions but there you go. He finished his mouthful and nodded. "I must say I agree, I've never felt this accepted in my life." It was a white lie, once he had, but he had agreed with himself to put those events of his past away for good. They did him no good to dredge up at every happy moment. Especially not happy moments with food. true food, where you can feel your belt straining and your hard worked for muscles disappearing under the layer of Christmas.
' You're doing ten laps of the mansion when we get home tubby.'
Cafas looked back to his plate. Had more food just magically appeared? He eyed Kaine across from him with suspicion. Nevertheless he appreciated the seconds, he had almost finished before. Yeah, who looked stupid now? How had he snuck quite that much on. Must have been a talent well mastered. Cafas started on his new helping at a slower pace. Not due to filling, but because he was now in a conversation of sorts with Elli, and didn't know how much he could get away with eating between answers.
'No, work faster, that way more food gets eaten... But less flavour is tasted, I see what you're doing there, good work body.'
"I must say I agree, I've never felt this accepted in my life."
Elli smiled, and said "I'm glad you like it here." She took a spear of green beans and chewed it thoughtfully. "I'll assume my dad read you the riot act, huh? I love him, but sometimes he can be too much of a dad, you know?" The 'feast' that Elli and Cafas were enjoying was actually rather small, consisting only of that pan of brisket, bowl of green beans, and a can each of the types of cranberry sauce. There was no dessert. However much Elli loved to be with her family, it hurt her on the inside that they didn't have enough money even with her efforts. It made her feel as though she was failing them.
Indicating the food with a broad sweep of her arm, Elli said "This is actually the largest feast we've ever had for anything. We, uh, well we don't really have a lot of money. Still, how's that brisket? Heavenly, right?"
