They came to a stop at the base of one of the many apartment block that soared into night. The taxi driver turned and spoke to her “These are you keys, and I’ll be back in the morning for you m’dam ”. Nox, having taken the keys and thanked him, then existed the taxi, heading straight for the metallic doors. The little lights above the elevator door steadily turned on then off when its neighbour took up the call, the light passing on throw the regiments of numbers. Nox concentrated on the progression of the little light so that she wasn’t overwhelmed by her thoughts, her thoughts that seemed intent on drowning her in their clamour – so much had happened. The momentum slowed, it was approaching the last floor. My apartment, my penthouse apartment. A slow click rewarded her as she turned the key in the door, it hadn’t been any sort of trick this really was hers. She walked in, having quickly surveyed the luxurious furnishes she dismissed them for they meant little to her. The window, however, was another matter entirely. It dominated one entire wall of her living room, allowing the moonlight to stream in as she gazed down at the world below. Occasional lights indicated the nocturnal life of the city, while shadows revealed those parts that rested. Its wonderful. She referred not only to the ability of surveying the rest of the world, but also because windows had always been favoured by her, since the radiation streamed through them. This wasn’t the artificial energy of the lamp she had ignored but raw energy that had travelled thousands of kilometres before it met her. Well met by moonlight indeed, she mused. She suddenly realised, as her breath left its signature upon the glass, that she was tired, and thus without even exploring the rest of her new home she retired to the bedroom and soon fell into a dreamless sleep. --------- Unnatural shadows drifted across the ceiling, it was early and only the grey that promised a new dawn had yet appeared. Nox was lying on her back facing her ceiling, her face was blank, as she finally found time to listen to her individual thoughts. Little snippets of her conversation with Kaz, images of her tests with hunter, the strange boy, and the girl with the bow in her hair. Even memories of her past occasionally tugged at her mind. She just let herself wander through the rooms of her mind, she was conscious yet her mind was aimless. As she did so however part of her gently manipulated the greyness in the room, causing shadows to swirl just like her thoughts against the emptiness of the ceiling. Eventually she got up, and having quickly pulled on her clothes, she went exploring. Kitchen, bathroom, study, living room. She now wandered round these rooms instead of her memories, looking for something that she just couldn’t quite place what. Ah ha. She had stopped in the corridor, turning she picked up her keys, locked her door and found herself in the hallway. There was only one other door, one other door that read “Authorised personal only” on a little warning sign. She ignored the sign. And found herself climbing a metal staircase, which lead to another door that yet again had a little warning sign, this one read “In case of emergency use only”. Following her trend, she ignored it. And found herself on the roof, Yes, this is want I needed. The cold morning air tugged at the hair, and a genuine smile appeared on her lips as she walked over to the edge to sat down with her legs dangling over. By now the first rays of the day were spreading across the urban horizon. Morning was second only to dusk in her opinion. The rays bathed her skin in a faint glow, the tingle of energy spread up her arm. I think I’ve just realised why people pay ridiculous amounts of money to live on the top floor. She stayed there, feeling the energy grow in strength, until she saw the taxi appear. No other black taxi was going to wiat in the side ally of this apratment block. And so with great reluctance she left, taking with her the small consolation that she would be returning.
