The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

God damn this was weird. In the grand scheme of things it wasn’t really any more weird than anything else that had happened tonight, but for what had to be the fourth or fifth time in the span of time that had elapsed since he’d woken up in Central Park Tarin tried to figure out how he’d ended up here. With Lee, the ex-wife of the Tarin that had lived on this side of the rift saving his life time and time again, refusing to call the cops to report the FOUR murders he’d committed, and bringing him back to her home after he’d assaulted her with a chair. Twice.
Now he was sitting on her couch clutching a glass of water while she assured him she’d be there if he had any nightmares. It did help to know that the other Tarin didn’t dream when he’d been drained like this…in fact, the spirits had been weirdly silent since Lee had gone to work on him.
Tarin knew he was in shock. He knew that eventually that shock was going to wear off and he was going to have to actually deal with the consequences of what had happened today…yesterday…whenever. Right now though, it was just weird. Like it was all happening to someone else while he watched.
What did he need explained?
Everything.
“Did…he…did…your Tarin hurt you a lot? Is that why…things didn’t work out?” The words were out of his mouth before he even meant to say them. Things obviously weren’t weird enough yet. It was something that had just continued to stick in Tarin’s mind. How easy all of this seemed, how practiced and methodical. How easy it was for Lee to see and deal with the gore and the unflinching way she insisted that they weren’t calling the cops.
Tarin took a sip of water that was hard to swallow after that, then a slightly bigger one when he managed to get it down. When he was done, he held the glass between his hands, staring at the liquid inside for a few moments.

He was quiet for a while after she asked her question. Lee just sat leaning back against the couch, glancing at him and then looking away so he wouldn’t feel like she was staring at him.
But when he spoke, Lee spoke before she even thought. “God no! Never!” Taking a breath before she spoke again, she looked over at him, her voice quieter than that exclamation. “No, Tarin never hurt me. Things…I worry. He always said too much. When Kevin was a baby that got really bad. The worry, anxiety. Things, one thing or another, always seemed to be happening and we could protect ourselves, but Kevin was just a baby…”
She took a deep breath as her eyes dropped down to her own water. “Staying in New York, living with a baby then toddler in New York, just became too much for me. I went back to Canada with Kevin, but Tarin refused to leave New York because it was home. The only place that had felt like home for either of us since we were children. We tried, but I couldn’t bring Kevin back here at that age, and he wouldn’t leave…”
Frowning, Lee raised her glass and took a long sip of water as they sat in silence for a minute. It was strange, very strange. Here she was talking about the end of hers and Tarin’s marriage to the Tarin Brooks from the other side of the rift.
Then he spoke again, another question. A huge, important question despite being only six words. Lifting her eyes to look over at him again as she spoke. “He tried to do good with his powers. It didn’t always work out how he wanted, but he tried to use his powers to help people when he could.” She gave a soft smile at this point. “And he did do some real good.
“And,” Lee continued as she smile slid off her face once more. “I was there to help him through the worst of it after the merges.”

Tarin actually jumped at the vehemence in Lee’s voice. He was tired, but he was also an outside observer.
Tarin had never hurt her, “But…but you’re way too good at dealing with this. It’s been a long time since we talked, but you told me about this happening more than once…”.
Tarin took another drink to sort out his thoughts. He was feeling a little bit better. At least physically, mentally the distraction of this weird weird conversation was good. Lee talked about having a baby, about how scary it had been in New York and….wow.
“Maybe…he let you go and he stayed because he knew it couldn’t ever really be safe for you while he was here.”
But this same Tarin, the one who had made Lee into the spirit wrecking machine that she was…had tried to do good with his powers.
Good? With these powers. Tarin took another drink, his muscles starting to relax a bit into the cushions of the couch as he drained the water glass.
“Tell me more?”
There was a missing piece though. One that Tarin couldn’t say out loud.

“There were,” Lee admitted sadly. “Unfortunately, there were multiple merges, but Tarin never hurt me. Some of the spirits who merged with him managed to do some real damage, but [/i]Tarin[/i] never hurt me.”[/font]
She was sure that he wouldn’t properly understand it. She wasn’t sure whether her Tarin had actually understood the difference even if he’d stopped arguing with her about it.
But when he spoke again, Lee shook her head, frowning down at her water. “Honestly, at that point I wasn’t overly worried about the merging…” she admitted. “I mean, yes, the worry was always there in the back of my mind, but I honestly wasn’t worried about that with regards to Kevin.” Lee sighed. Maybe something like that had been in the back of his head, but with how much he had fought to get her to come back to the city…
At this point, though, did it really matter why he hadn’t been willing to come with her? That had all happened more than a decade ago, and Tarin had disappeared and she could only hope, was living on the other side of the rift.
“More?” Lee asked, looking over at him again with a brief smile. “Alright. Multiple times, he tried to pass information to the police about murders. Like I said, that didn’t always work out so well. One of those times in Chicago, the police dragged him in as a suspect. But there was one, here in New York just after we had met. The spirit of a little girl at the zoo. He sent an anonymous tip and, it did still take a while, but they did catch the guy who killed her.”
Lee bit her lip as she thought about what else she could actually tell him. Most of the people in their lives didn’t know about half of what had happened to them. Though, she thought. It’s been so long since we did those things, and maybe hearing will actually help him.
“Probably the biggest one, the thing that helped him the most, happened in Columbia. We knew someone who was rebuilding a school down there, humanitarian project. Some of the locals had been killed by the drug cartel there, and their spirits were very angry and causing problems for the villagers. We went down and was actually able to help them cross over or whatever it is.”

It was more than surreal to hear about the things that a power could do in a world where the power was allowed to do it.
But at the same time, all of that had happened at the expense of people that the Tarin of this world had hurt. At the expense of the woman down the couch from him.
It had also made her who she was. Had made her into a person who would go out of her way to save someone like him, to bring him here to find out where she lives.
It was almost as overwhelming as everything else that had happened tonight.
Tarin tried to take another drink, but his cup was empty, he set it down on the floor and turned slightly, “That…honestly sounds amazing. Are there still people who do those kinds of things in this world?”
It was amazing. Absolutely wild to think about things that way. And that was just the biggest. There was more.
“Maybe…” Tarin said, not able to quite put what he was thinking into words.

Lee stayed silent as she let what she had said sink in. It had to be a lot to take in, especially right now for him. When he did finally speak, she couldn’t help but smile. “It really kind of is,” she agreed with a slight nod. ”I’m sure there are. Since, well…I’ve been keeping my head down and just helping Kevin deal with it all, but before that I had been becoming involved with another organization, also here in New York, trying to do similar things.”
Then there was more silence, but this time it didn’t feel as strained, tense, distressed by the events that had brought them together hours before.
“Maybe I should try to get some rest…”
“Of course,” Lee said as she stood up. “I’ll go get a bed ready for you.”

Of course she couldn’t just let him crash on the couch.
“Lee…Lee….Lee.” Tarin growled in frustration, dropping his head against the back of the couch. Maybe he’d just fall asleep before she came back out of spite.
Heaving a sigh, Tarin took a deep breath and then pushed up from the couch. As he gained his feet Tarin’s head spun a bit and he stumbled a bit as he followed Lee in the direction she had gone.
There was a small hallway around the corner from the living room he’d been in before and Tarin heard sounds from the first room.
Leaning heavily on the door frame, Tarin panted, “You are not giving up your bed for me.” Why were his fingers tingling?
“I’ll be more than happy…on…the… cou….” He added as his eyes rolled and he sank to the floor.

Lee had already turned and was making her way towards the bedrooms when he spoke, so she didn’t hear him saying her name. In fact, she had stopped to grab a set of sheets out of the closet, had already pulled the sheets off her bed and was starting to put the fresh set on when she heard his voice from the door.
“I won’t be sleeping for at least a couple days, so someone may as well use it,” she said as she glanced over while continuing with getting the bed ready.
But as he continued speaking, Lee saw that he really didn’t look good. She straightened up as his voice trailed off. Then she saw his eyes rolling back and he was falling.
Lee’s eyes widened and she rushed forward, very glad that her speed and strength still worked when she shut her siphoning off. She wasn’t able to catch him completely, but she managed to get there and get ahold of him in time to keep his head from hitting the floor again.
Lowering him gently the rest of the way to the floor, Lee checked him over, checked his pulse, looked for any injuries she had missed noticing earlier.

Couch?
Tarin was more than happy on the floor. Tarin probably would have been more than happy anywhere at that exact moment.
The other voice in the room was doing that slow motion thing that stretches the words out…but the message landed. He was supposed to wake up. The hand patting Tarin’s cheek insisted.
Bleary, bleary eyes cracked open and Tarin found himself looking up at Lee. Again.
“We have to stop meeting this way.”
Hey, what good was exhausted delirium if you couldn’t make corny jokes?
Something tickled Tarin’s memory from before he’d hit the floor.

Lee let out a sigh of relief when she saw his eyes fluttering then opening. Then he spoke, and Lee couldn’t stop the soft chuckle and smile. It was so…Well, he wasn’t the same Tarin she knew, but it was such a him thing to say.
Then he questioned what she had said before he’d passed out, and the smile faltered. Rather than answer immediately, Lee asked a question of her own. “Think you can sit?”
After getting an indication that he could, Lee helped him up, again keeping a hand behind his shoulder to make sure he didn’t fall again.
“Where do you think all the energy I took from you went?” her eyes darting away from his eyes briefly as she frowned. “I won’t be able to sleep until I’ve burned through all of that, and I don’t have a way to speed that up here…”

It took a minute, but then Tarin was leaning back against the end of the bed, head still slightly swimming. It was all catching up to him now, and suddenly sleep didn’t seem like it was going to be a problem.
Lee explained that he had, in fact, heard right despite his semi-conscious state at the time. She was going to be up for days because of all that energy she’d taken from him.
Great. Add it to the tally of things he owed Lee for causing.
“I’m sorry…again…” he said, dropping his head back against the bed.
“You don’t have to stay here…” he added, groping around in his head for the words he wanted to get out, “I’m not gonna…I wouldn’t…not here….” he finished helplessly, eyes averted.
“Either way, I’ve got it from here…if you’re sure I can’t just take the couch.”

He was apologizing again. Lee shook her head and waved it off as if it was nothing. Because it really wasn’t. She did a quick check on her energy level and realized that yeah, it would likely only be another couple of days before she slept again. After a merge, that was actually pretty damn good.
“Don’t worry about it. Really,” she told him with a bit of shrug. “I’m used to it. I don’t sleep after spending a night at a bar, either.”
But then he was saying that he had it from there, and Lee nodded. Then she stood up, finishing up the last bit to get the bed ready. “I’m sure. It’s easier for me to get through the night in the living room.”
Gathering the bedding she had removed, Lee made her way toward the door, then turned to look back at him. “Bathroom’s just further down the hall. I’ll be around if you need anything. And, uh, good night.”
