The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Before he nodded, before his eyes had met hers, Lee saw tears in his eyes, running down the side of his face. By the time that he had nodded confirmation that yes, the spirit was gone, she had shut her siphoning off, no longer taking anything from him, and released his wrists, sitting up straight. Then slowly, a little stiffly, she climbed off of him, moving off to the side.
And just sat there on the floor beside him as a wave of dizziness came over her. Not debilitating by any means, but enough that she wasn’t going to rush to her feet without a reason.
“You’re hurt…”
Lee slowly turned her eyes to see that there were some pieces of wood sticking out of her shoulder, trickles of blood running down her arm from where she was cut. As she lifted her hand to where her head had hit the floor, Lee gingerly touched her scalp as she thought about how the rest of her body felt. She was definitely sore, her head hurt and her shoulders weren’t much better. Pulling her hand away from her head, she looked at it. No blood. And she’d been moving her arms, they’d hurt but not that bad, so didn’t think there was anything broken.
“I’ll be fine. It’s not that bad,” she finally said, her voice also quiet now.
Turning her attention back to him, Lee was a little surprised that he was still awake; he looked exhausted. “And you?” Lee asked. She knew he had hit the floor hard, and she could see the red marks on his wrists from where she had been holding him. “From the fall? You can move your wrists?”

This was so so so very very very fucked up on so many levels.
Lee released his wrists, but Tarin didn’t move from where he was laying. A few brief moments and she was speaking to him again.
The woman he had hit with a chair was asking him if he was alright. Asking if she had hurt him.
Why did it make him angry?
Why did she care? It utterly boggled the mind. This woman had left her child, pulled him from a literal murder scene, stayed here with him for God knows how long, and took a chair to the head…twice. Now she was asking him if she had hurt him while she was restraining him as he tried to kill her.
This was so fucked up. What had Lee’s life been like that this wasn’t bad? Everything about this was bad.
“You should see a doctor.” He said. “I’m not going to hurt anyone else.”
Tarin’s body did hurt though. Small scrapes and larger bruises stung seemingly everywhere and his shoulder was starting to throb from where he’d landed on it a few minutes before.
The effort felt Herculean, but Tarin moved his hands experimentally. Sore, but fine. Unable to look Lee’s direction again he pulled his arms down to rest on his hands on his chest.
“Can you walk? If you can, you should get going. I know it’s ludicrous to ask you for another favor…but could you call the police on your way out?”

“You should see a doctor. I’m not going to hurt anyone else.”
“I know you won't,” Lee said softly, bracing her hands on the floor behind her, leaning back slightly. “And I'll be fine.”
As she sat there, Lee didn't even notice that her eyes had slipped closed. Her head was still pounding. Painkillers and an ice pack were certainly in her future. When she was able to stand up.
Then she heard him speaking again. Lee's eyes opened as she looked over at him. He looked horrible as he laid there, physically and emotionally. He wanted her to leave, to leave him like this, after everything that had happened? And to call the police on her way?
Lee didn't bother answering anything he'd just asked. Instead, eyes focused on his face to catch any expressions, any answers he didn't voice, Lee asked a question of her own.
“When was the last time a merge happened?” She asked, her voice quiet, gentle. “I'm guessing none have been even remotely close to this bad?”

Why wouldn’t she just go? Tarin didn’t really move, didn’t think he could really move at this point.
“Not since I was a kid.” He said by way of explanation and answer to Lee’s question. A teenager really, but close enough. Tarin knew he should elaborate, but he just didn’t have it in him. It didn’t matter anyway.
“It wasn’t this bad, but it was bad enough.” It was how he’d ended up in New York on his side and why he hadn’t spoken to his Mother or his brothers for almost 17 years.
It was what he’d spent those 17 years doing everything in his power to prevent. It was why he’d know that whole time exactly what he’d do if it happened again.
“Things were so different here.” He said, voice a monotone as he continued to stare at the ceiling. “I was lonely...”
“I took a sucker punch to the face a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t think I went all the way down. Nothing weird was happening…”
Tarin trailed off, debating whether or not to keep talking. Again, what did it matter.
“I kept…waking up alone..” he said, shrugging inelegantly from his spot on the floor. “When I hadn’t gone to sleep that way…” there was a wince in the words there.

“Not since I was a kid.”
Lee's eyes slipped closed as a slightly pained expression crossed her face. If he hasn't had a merge in that long…the aftermath was going to be even worse than she had thought.
By the time he had started speaking again, Lee had opened her eyes and was looking at him. As he stared up at the ceiling. And explained in very little detail what had led up to this merge, what had happened as part of this merge.
“It wasn't you,” Lee told him with a slight shake of her head. Bad idea, she realized as the room spun slightly. Maybe a doctor wasn't the worst idea. But now wasn't the time. “He did that last time, too…”
Letting her eyes slip closed for a moment, Lee took a deep breath before sitting up straight. “Let's get you into bed so you can sleep. Do you need anything first? Food, water?”

Bed…sleep…food…water…they were all such human things. The thought of closing his eyes and trying to sleep, sleep in that bed…a shudder ran through Tarin.
“I’m fine.” He said. Tarin was anything but fine, but the thought of eating anything made his stomach twist in revulsion.
Lee also was not fine. His arms were so heavy, but he moved them from his chest, slowly trying to push upright but only making it as far as his elbows. He was fine, he just needed a minute.
He took the minute and then finished pushing upright, head spinning as he did so.

He said he was fine. Lee knew that was categorically not true, but she didn’t push it. Now was not the time to say otherwise. So she just nodded, but stopped after her head moved up and down a single time because the movement hurt too much.
Then she saw him pushing himself up and Lee’s eyes widened in surprise slightly. She was surprised that he was simply still awake, never mind slowly sitting up.
But she was slow to react, and only leaned forward to help him as he was moving from his elbows to fully sit up.
”Lee. You’re bleeding.”
“Just my arm, or did I miss seeing something else?” She asked, one hand still behind his shoulder to help keep him upright. “I'll get cleaned up once you're settled and can sleep.”

Lee said that she’d worry about herself once he was ready to sleep. Locking his elbows so he could lean back on them like props, Tarin dropped his head and sighed.
“I desperately need you to stop acting like this is run of the mill or normal.” He said, “I’m not just going to go lay down and take a nap in a bed where I likely killed a woman less than 24 hours ago. I hit ”
Saying it made it just as real as the blood had been on his hands.
“I know you’re trying to help, and you’ve already done so much more than anyone could reasonably expect….”
Tarin paused again, shaking his head.
“I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that you want me to eat a sandwich or something after I hit you with a chair. Twice.”

Seeing that he’d managed to position himself so it would be at least a lot harder for him to fall back at this point, Lee pulled her hand away from his shoulder as she listened to him speak. Then nodded slightly. Very slightly.
“Run of the mill? No, you’re right, it’s not,” Lee said, her voice quiet but confident. “Would you rather I panic or something? Because that won’t help either of us. But considering I’m surprised that you’re even still awake, yes, I’m expecting you to ‘lay down and take a nap’.”
Then Lee swallowed hard, her eyes dropping before she continued in a whisper. “But you didn’t. Not in the bed.” She kept her eyes lowered and took a few slow, deep breaths until the memories of what it did look like when that happened disappeared.
Lee was just looking up at him again when he mentioned her being hit with the chair, and her head tilted, a crease forming between her brows. “But you didn’t hit me. He, the spirit, hit me with the chair. It wasn’t you. Plus, I’ve been hit by far worse than a chair, and not just during merges.
“Though yes, considering it must be what, 16 hours since you’ve likely had anything to eat and you are still awake, it probably would be good for you to eat something. And drink something.”

Was she really going to argue semantics? Tarin didn’t want to think about it, how he’d gotten Christine from the bedroom…where they’d definitely been…to the park where…where…his stomach lurched again and Tarin clenched his teeth shaking his head and looking away when Lee averted her eyes. There. That was a much more appropriate reaction to what they were so casually discussing.
She was surprised he was upright, but Tarin still didn’t know how she expected him to be able to sleep after that. How was he ever going to sleep again?
It was utterly incredible that Lee was able to easily compartmentalise things, but Tarin wasn’t having such an easy time. She’d been hit by far worse? And not during a merge?
Who was this woman? Who had she been married to?
“You’re not just going to leave me alone, are you?” He finally asked.

He looked shocked when she mentioned that she’d been hit with worse than a chair. Though, when she thought about it rationally, and from the perspective of someone who didn’t know what she and Tarin had been doing with Slate…Thought about how Matt would react to that kind of comment… But the last thing she needed to do so he could try and understand how relatively minor her current injuries were was tell him about the worst thing she’d been hit with.
Somehow she didn’t think he’d take the news that she’d actually died before well.
“Not in the immediate future, no I won’t be,” Lee informed him. Then she slowly, carefully got to her feet. “Did you need help up, or are you going to stay there on the floor while I clean myself up?”

So. Even knowing what he’d done (he wasn’t going to let himself off the hook nearly as easy as Lee was) he was just supposed to keep going.
He couldn’t even wrap his head around how that was even possible. How he was going to live with himself knowing that there were people out there looking for their loved ones and waiting for them to get home. That line of thought made him realize that he didn’t even know where the other women were.
“I’m going to stay here.” Tarin said, more than a little frustrated, but not really able to do much about it because he knew that he wasn’t going to be able to get to his feet on his own.

He was going to stay where he was on the floor. Lee frowned slightly. He should be sleeping, she thought. The 10 hours that he had been out hadn’t been enough. Lee knew that from experience. And then, even if most the siphoning she had done since he’d woken up had taken energy from the spirit and not him…he had to be exhausted.
But she really didn’t know him well. Or at all. And he was already having trouble understanding why she was helping him, having trouble with the fact that she was helping him. She wasn’t going to push this.
“Alright, it shouldn’t take me long,” she told him, then made her way into the bathroom, pushing the door closed behind her, though it didn’t close quite all the way. Starting the water running, Lee pulled out the first aid supplies. And Advil. Definitely Advil for her head.
The first aid supplies weren’t as well stocked as when she had left them, but were still in the same spot. Turning her attention to the mirror, Lee bit her lip as she started pulling out the wood splinters from her arm and cleaning herself up.
When she finished, Lee stood in the doorway to the bathroom for a moment looking at him for a moment. If he wasn’t going to sleep, Lee knew that he couldn’t stay here in the shop. Not right now.
It didn’t take her long. Grabbing a few changes of clothes for him, a clean pair of shoes, she managed to get him up and out of the shop with minimal fighting. Then it was just a quick cab ride to her apartment. Getting him upstairs was not quite as easy, but at least she had the strength to help him even if her body was hurting.
Finally, they were walking into her empty apartment. Thankfully Rachel had listened and taken Kevin away. After locking the door behind them, Lee turned to look at him again as she set the bags down and took her shoes off. “Food or sleep first?” She asked him again.

Tarin had thought he’d feel better if he was able to sit for a while. That his head would clear and he could figure out what to do next. Lee was insistent that she wasn’t going to leave him alone, though he did idly wonder while she was in the bathroom if he would have enough time to just end things before she made it back.
It definitely wasn’t a good idea for him to be alone right now, but it sure would have made things simpler.
The more he sat, the more Tarin realized that he legitimately had no idea what he was going to do. The idea of sleep was so terrifying that his entire body locked up and threatened to revolt if he even thought about laying down and closing his eyes. What would he see if he did that, how could he stop the myriad images that he could feel lurking just outside his line of sight.
Even worse…what if he was too tired. What if another psychopathic spirit had seen what happened and he slept too soundly tonight? What if the exhaustion was too much and he did something like this again…
Tarin legitimately didn’t know what to do.
Lee did. Just like Lee apparently knew how to handle everything.
Lee also apparently had absolutely no problem rifling through his clothing. Tarin numbly reflected that if he did manage to get through one set of trauma related to tonight, there was going to be a line that looked like the DMV behind it to work his way through. He literally didn’t have the energy to be embarrassed though and quickly gave up, then found himself bustled into a cab.
The walk to the elevator was far harder than it should have been, but the elevator had a very obliging wall to lean on.
Then they were inside.
“You are a wildly infuriating mix between an Italian nonna and a debt collector,” he said. Well aware that he hadn’t answered Lee’s question. This solved the problem of having to sleep in that bed, but not the other two issues that kept rolling around in his head.
“Every time I think about food I feel like I’m going to be sick.So probably not food” It was true, he could still smell the blood if he thought about it. Taste it if he thought about it too much. Standing in the doorway, not sure what to do with himself, Tarin shrugged, “I’m afraid I’m too tired..what if I sleep too deep? What if I dream.”

He spoke and for a moment Lee frowned before she let out a short chuckle. “I think the preferred terms over the years have been ‘stubborn’ and ‘determined to get my way’.
The chuckle, and the slight smile that had accompanied it, quickly disappeared as he spoke again. That…yeah, Lee could understand that. But the dreams, sleep…
“If you do dream,” she told him, her voice soft. “I’ll be here to wake you up. But Tarin - the Tarin I knew - always said that the more energy I had drained from him, the less likely he was to dream or have spirits bother him.
“Or,” Lee continued, glancing further into the apartment. “You can go sit on the couch and I’ll grab us some drinks.”
Seeing him slowly making his way toward the livingroom, Lee watched for a moment just to make sure that he looked steady enough to make it before turning toward the kitchen. A minute later, she was returning, two glasses of water in her hands. Handing one of them over, Lee sat on the other side of the couch and took a sip. Then turned her head to look over at him. “I know a lot of what I’ve said didn’t make sense to you,” she said slowly. “What do I need to explain first?”
