The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Gawain was... not completely awake. He rarely ever was, these days. He spent most of his time in a kind of fog, trying to focus on tasks and also keep track of whether it was night or day. Currently, it was daytime. A Gawain day, and also a heart-shaped-irises day. Having a baby meant a whole lot of sleep deprivation. Having a mutant shifter baby meant Gawain was grateful he still remembered the code for the Danger Room.
And yet, work was work. They had students, and some of them were new. Today, he would meet one of these new kids, and put the fear of God help them train their powers. Waiting by the Danger Room door, Gawain checked to see if he had milk stains on his t-shirt. Nope. So far, this day was a complete victory.
Mutants liked to pretend they weren't violent. Yet only a week after he had arrived they decided he needed to learn how to hurt people with his powers. Instructions were to meet one of the head mutants in the 'Danger Room', which was not a place a sane person would want to spend any amount of time. They thought it made them tough, maybe. They thought that normal people - real people - didn't see right through the peaceloving PR persona they tried to take on and understand the malicious true intent that mutants held.
His powers weren't violent. They were barely powers.
The mutant in question was not one he recognised. There were too many people in the school, too many faces and names to remember. Worse, most of them had more than one name. A few had more than one face.
"You're," his voice trailed for a moment as he grasped around his brain for the silly codename, "Mirror. I'm supposed to come here and, whatever, do danger room things."
His voice did not tremble at the inherent peril of his own words. It was a near thing. He didn't want to learn power control. He wanted to learn how to hide the ugly foul truth of his being from the real people - the kind that didn't breath fire or turn off the sun. He certainly didn't want to step into a room that freely advertised its own menace.
The kid showed up on time. That was a good start. He didn't look much younger than Gawain was when he first snuck into the Mansion after a girl all those years ago. But he was here officially, as a new student. That was also a good student. Mirror had only had a few minutes to glance at his file.
>>"You're... Mirror. I'm supposed to come here and, whatever, do danger room things."
"Gawain's fine" Gawain smiled and nodded, hoping the heart-eyes were not weirding the kid out too much "And you're Mason, right? Welcome to Xavier's."
The DR room slid open as Gawain walked in, motioning to Mason to follow him. He stifled a yawn before he turned around.
"So, this is your first Danger Room session. Basically, we are just here to get a better idea of how your abilities work. The system is equipped to record data, and that will help us design exercises for you to get better control of your powers." he explained that, and meanwhile also tried to remember what he'd read in the file about Mason's powers. "Uhh... remind me, what those are again?"
Gawain sounded like a made up name. Did that mean that Mirror was the real name? The people here -- and he used that term lightly -- were weird as hell.
The man bid Mason follow and there seemed no other option.
"Uhh... remind me, what those are again?"
Asking questions they knew the answers to comprised a key part of mutant schooling. Maybe they thought it was friendly. Maybe they didn't have much to say and grasped at any excuse to speak. Mason didn't have that problem. Better to be suspected a mute idiot than to be proved verbal one.
Of course, staring blankly when someone asked you a direct question was pretty good proof of idiocy.
"I make magic portals," he said, before realising how ridiculous it sounded, "Or just -- holes, I guess. One with each hand. And they link up like -- have you played Minecraft? Like that. Sort of."
Okay, so the kid did something with... portals? Gawain had read the file, but that was a day and two shifts earlier, so it was hard to recall. No worries, asking questions were always okay, and there were no dumb questions in education anyway.
>>"I make magic portals. Or just -- holes, I guess. One with each hand. And they link up like -- have you played Minecraft? Like that. Sort of."
"What's minecraft?" Gawain blinked. For someone who could literally walk into movies, he was horribly late on pop culture sometimes. Becca probably knew. Okay, so maybe there were dumb questions. From the faculty. Gawain cleared his throat.
