The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Well, at least she didn't have to say it out loud. Had Nate known that things had happened between her and her ex-partner or had he just known. It honestly didn't matter at this point, she'd been saved from having to admit that it had happened. Now they could talk about the whole thing while she pretended it was something else.
Had the whole thing been received that poorly? That question called for more booze!
"It was nothing but a formality by that point, but I was technically still an intern." the redhead said, staring out into the darkness that had wrapped itself around them in the castle. "So you can imagine...he took an all expense paid trip to supervise the establishment of an MRC in Norfolk, I got to stay here, start a two year internship over, and everyone thinks I'm the type of girl who sleeps her way to the top...not that things ever went that far, mind you..." That detail was important for some reason.
"You wouldn't believe how long it takes to get that proverbial monkey off your back. I had no idea what you had been up to, and it all would have come out."
Quin was a little sick now that it was all out there. She hadn't talked about this with anyone since it had happened. "So....yeah."
Quin had danced around the topic of Ashton, but Nate was no idiot. The way she talked about him and the way they parted ways, it was not hard to assume there was more to the story than their work partnership ending. They always had something between them and at times it was a point of contention between Quin and Nate, (before they discovered a much bigger point of contention to spend their energy on.) If she had a rebound, he was not so naïve to assume they would not have explored those feelings in the wake of the breakup. Nate did not blame her or hold it against her; they were no longer together and she was a big girl, even if he would never be Ashton’s biggest fan.
Unfortunately, the story was not so cut and dry, and Nate had to feel for both of them. They tried to pursue their feelings and the powers that be in the NYPD chose to punish them for it. Work romances were messy, but they were flat-out dangerous when the chain of command was involved. Nate forgot about Quin’s status as an intern because he always saw her as a police officer. She worked her ass off just like anyone else on the force.
And now she had to deal with the stigma of being “that girl.” It was disgusting and unfair. Anyone who knew Quin would know she worked for everything she earned. Dealing with a tarnished reputation, she seemed to understand how Nate’s true identity would have been equally toxic to her career.
It was just not right. Her situation ignited feelings for the police Nate had not felt in a while. Before he could stop himself, he raised his hand and placed it against Quin’s cheek. ”They don’t deserve you, Quin. I’m sorry, but if that place has the gall to give you dirty looks and reduce you to the men you have—or have not—slept with, they’re blind to the miraculous woman they’ve been lucky enough to have around.”
Of course, the NYPD were not the only ones to foolishly take Quin for granted. ”One day you’ll be gone, and they’ll understand how stupid they were to let that happen.”

Quin flinched slightly out of surprise at the sudden contact, then leaned into Nate's hand as he spoke. It would have been foolish to ignore comfort when comfort was offered. There had been precious little of it recently, and Quin wasn't going to pass up the opportunity.
The words were hard to hear, even if they were a lot of the things that had been running through Quin's head recently. Well, most of them anyway. Why did she feel like there was more to what Nate had just said then the simple fact that the department would regret letting her go? Why were they just doing this now after so much time had passed? Why were there so many why’s and so few answers to explain everything that she was feeling right now.
Nate made her feel...worthy, Quin decided, finally putting a word to something she had struggled with for a long time.
”I just wish I knew what to do…” she whispered, closing her eyes to simply enjoy the moment before it passed.
Nate felt Quin’s hesitance when he pressed his hand against her cheek, but it faded quickly and she leaned into the touch. She was warm to the touch and the contact felt familiar. It was like they had taken a trip back to any night in their relationship. One of them had a rough day, and the other was there with comfort and affection and support.
Quin was without direction, frustrated with where life had taken her. That meant big decisions were on the horizon, either to change her life drastically or find a new way to be happy with where she was now. Nate was only recently learning to become a stable, forward-thinking adult with long-term goals. It was hard for him to picture wanting one thing all his life until it no longer seemed right. It was hard to relate, but it did not mean he could not be there for Quin. ”I’ll be around when you need someone to talk to about everything,” he assured her.
It was nice just talking to Quin again. He missed the sense of closeness he once enjoyed with her. The thumb of his hand brushed away strands of hair from her face, and in that moment, he saw the woman he fell in love with once upon a time. In another moment, he had leaned into her and met her lips with his own.
The kiss was soft and quick because it only took a few seconds for Nate to come to his senses. He pulled away, wide-eyed, realizing he may have overstepped his bounds. ”I’m sorry. I probably shouln’t’ve....”

It would have been pathetic to admit just how much it meant to Quin that Nate said he’d be there to help her through whatever decisions she made regarding her future. Nothing would happen fast, Quin had obligations. Her current case was too important to dump in someone else’s lap, but she didn’t say any of that.
In fact, her current train of thought was severed when someone in the interaction between her and Nate changed.
It was nearly imperceptible, but in the moment before it happened, Quin knew that Nate was going to kiss her. Hadn’t he just said the last time they were together that he was dating someone? Was this the sort of thing she should be encouraging? There she went with the questions again...it didn’t matter though, there wasn’t time for any of them.
The kiss was nice, familiar, and all of the things it really should have been at that moment in time. It was short too, which was regrettable, at least in Quin’s mind. She’d hardly had a chance to kiss back.
Nate was apologizing now, and the redhead shook her head, looking intently at him in the dark.
”It’s okay, it’s not like I minded.” she said, a small, slow smile crossing her features. Considering the way their last meeting had gone, he should have known.
As to whether he should or shouldn’t have…
”But, if circumstances haven’t changed since the last time… No, you shouldn’t have.”
Quin did not pull away from the kiss, which was a little victory, but could have also been the result of shock. Kissing her was a bold choice and one Nate was unsure if he actually made. He was convinced the moment took hold of him and nudged him forward. He did not regret kissing her, but he worried he was putting Quin in an awkward spot.
To her credit, Quin did not seem upset with the kiss. She was smiling, which allowed Nate to smile. She did have her concerns, because she remembered their last meeting. They had gotten close and comfortable on the couch until Nate had to drop a metaphorical bucket of cold water on them by invoking his relationship. If he let things go any further back then, it would have been unfair to everyone involved.
Except circumstances had changed. ”Sarah and I are done, actually,” he admitted somberly. ”It’s been about two weeks. Things just didn’t work out. I have too many things changing in my life, and it was just more than I could put on her plate.” Nate’s life was in a state of flux, and it was unfair to drag someone for the ride as he learned how to be the father to another woman’s child and a leader in an organization with details he could not be totally candid with.
”I didn’t say anything because I swear, I didn’t plan for this to happen when I messaged you tonight.” He was pretty sure his intentions for inviting Quin out had been pure. He wanted good company and nostalgia. Did he know where nostalgia would lead them?

Well, that was a relief. Quin couldn't help but relax even more when Nate admitted that he and his girlfriend had broken up. It wasn't that she was happy he was going through all the pain and doubt that went along with the end of a relationship...it was more that she knew they hadn't done anything wrong.
Huh. How about that. They hadn't done anything wrong. Quin tilted her head slightly as the thought passed through her mind. Kissing an ex was one of those things that people always lamented with great drama on social media and on TV. It was supposed to tie a person up in knots and make them seek solace in many pints of ice cream. Quin didn't feel like doing that though, she was comfortable with everything that had happened.
Nate promised that this outcome hadn't been his intention when he'd texted earlier in the night and Quin had to shake her head again, she almost wanted to giggle, but it seemed inappropriate. Besides, Nate had shared something important and it would have been wrong to diminish what he was saying.
"I'm sorry things didn't work out." Quin said, reaching out a hand and placing it on Nate's arm in what she hoped was a comforting gesture. "Sometimes people need time and space to figure things out." she let that hang for a moment then spoke again, "I'm glad you knew you could call me up. I'll always be around to help you figure stuff out."
Another moment of silence, then Quin grinned, "The kissing is pretty okay too, to be honest." she'd blame it on the liquor, even if she hadn't had much.
Nate did not want to spend the night talking about his failed relationship with the other woman he shared a different failed relationship with. Nate held no negative feelings toward Sarah; things did not work out, and they had to accept it and move forward. It sucked, but he was dealing with it.
It actually helped having Quin empathize and support him. Nate was not expecting it, but she was proving to be one of the best friends he could have in the wake of his breakup. Who knew? Her touch gave him almost as much comfort as her reminder that time and space would make things easier and that she would be there for him through it all.
As much as they were starting to make “hanging out” a habit, Nate was still more used to thinking of Quin as his ex-girlfriend rather than his friend. Looking out over the water in their hidden castle, he was finally starting to see the new side of their complex and ever-evolving relationship.
>> "The kissing is pretty okay too, to be honest."
Complex and ever-evolving, indeed! Nate smirked, happy to hear he was not the only one missing the familiar feeling of his lips on hers. ”I mean, if you’re twisting my arm,” he joked in a soft voice. He placed a hand at her waist and another behind her head, running his fingers between locks of red hair as he leaned into a kiss he was not going to pull away from.
They could talk about the implications of the kissing soon enough. In the moment, they were riding on the waves of alcohol and nostalgia.
Good lord it had been too long since this had happened. Quin simply enjoyed the kissing for what it was, and when they were done she felt better than she had in weeks. Kissing as catharsis, that was a novel idea. The hands in her hair, the familiarity of the whole situation, the butterflies that still managed to flutter deep in her stomach...it was basically therapy.
This was all so complicated though, who met up with an ex after several years to drink alcohol out of a paper bag and kiss in a castle? Apparently Quin Archer and Nate Halloway did. That's who.
"There's nothing weird about this, right?" Quin said, looking steadily at Nate. Despite the fact that it all felt good, Quin didn't know exactly what she thought about the situation in general. It was amazing to have Nate back, if for nothing else than the steadiness and balance he helped her maintain. There was so much going on though, she was so emotional and on the cusp of something big in her life...she needed advice and there was only one person she could think of to ask...and she'd already done the asking.
Some things were like riding a bike; you realize they you never quite forgot how to do it once you get back on the seat. Kissing Quin was a lot like that. The way they touched and the way the kiss fit so naturally brought him back to simpler days. It was easy and it was enjoyable. Nate liked having Quin in his life and he liked kissing her. Was that so bad to admit?
They pulled away from the last kiss smiling, but Quin had to ask the question that had to logically follow. If they left it unaddressed, it would become the elephant in the room and they would go months ignoring it. As much as “ignoring it” felt like the easiest answer, it was also the easiest way for things to get messy. Nate liked the moment they were sharing, but he knew he had to be careful; he did not want to risk losing Quin as part of his life for another half-decade.
It was that same concern that made him think things over realistically. The temptation to slip back into a relationship that used to be their comfortable place was strong. It was also dangerous. ”Does it have to be weird?” he asked, genuinely not sure what the rules were in their situation. ”We both have a lot going on. I’m gonna need a friend like you, Quin. And I’m gonna be around for you. And I don’t want to do anything that could screw all that up.” The last time something threw a wrench in their relationship, they just ceased to exist in each other’s worlds. They both had a myriad of issues on their plates that could create frustration and tension in a relationship. It was too much to risk, regardless of how nice it was to hold Quin.
”I like having you around, Quin. And I like kissing you, but I’ll set that aside if it means preserving this friendship,” he said as he watched his finger slowly twirled, wrapping a lock of red hair around it. His eyes returned back to hers and he smirked, adding, ”If I have to, that is.” If there was an end to their conversation that left him with a friend and kissing privileges, he was not going to argue against it.
There was so much history with Nate, so much drama, so much good, so much bad...just so much in general. He spoke, and she listened.
Nate needed a friend like her...and Quin barely even hesitated to admit to herself that she needed a friend too. She probably needed more than one. It had been a long few years, and it was starting to become evident to the redhead just how isolated she had become...and what a toll that had taken on her life outside of work.
Quin had one of those feelings, one of those cosmic senses that the psychics and astrologists always told you not to ignore. Something big was happening, and things had been set into motion that were going to happen whether she wanted them to or not. LIfe was strange that way and who was she to question fate?
Could two people of the opposite sex be friends this way? Could things really stay casual in the name of maintaining a stable friendship that was somehow more important than the escalation to true romantic involvement that tended to follow when two people were comfortable and attracted to one another?
”It doesn’t have to be weird.” Quin said softly, watching Nate mess with her hair.
”I think I need friends right now.” she added, ”And like I said before...there’s been a vacuum in my existence for a while now, and that’s definitely better with you around.”
Quin was quiet again for a few moments before she chuckled and spoke, ”And I can’t say that I’d have much of a problem if kissing happened to occur from time to time..it turns out it’s a very therapeutic activity.”
The idea that Nate and Quin could pull off a friends-with-benefits situation was a hard sell, but Quin was surprisingly quick to warm up to the idea. They had a past together, but they were also adults. They liked one another and the comfort they provided, and they still shared an attraction. If they were willing to be mature, it could be something simple and beneficial for both of them. If it turned out they were just bad at keeping things casual and non-committed, they could cross that bridge when the time came.
”We’re not a bad team, Archer,” Nate teased warmly, feeling his smile widening as he looked at her. ”We’ll have each other’s backs until the world starts making sense again for both of us.”
Having Quin as a friend made his life unquestionably better. Leaving the door open with Quin for more kissing was not something he needed, but it had the potential to make bad days better and good days great. Nate’s hands moved to Quin’s hips. He was keen on the idea of therapeutic kissing. ”I think you’re right.” He leaned in closer, whispering his words millimeters from her lips. ”Now, why don’t we work on relieving all that tension you’ve been carrying around?”
