The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

As Quin made her way down the stairs in Nate's apartment building she kept playing the last few minutes over and over in her head. It was a little morbid, but she wanted to understand how everything had ended the way it had. They'd been trying for so long, working on things a little bit at a time...just to have it end this way.
It was stupid.
Stuffing her hands in her pockets as she left the building, Quin thought about it some more as she made her way to her car. Was it shocking that they'd just broken up? No. Was it still dumb? Yeah.
Mechanically, the redhead started the vehicle, a Volks Wagon beetle, and pulled from the parking spot. More thoughts rolled through her head, not the least of which the fact that after everything Nate had been the one to break up with her. The thought was finally what made the tears flow.
How she'd gotten there, she didn't know. Being a budding detective, Quin could have looked up the address a hundred different ways. She didn't need to though, she'd dropped him off a few different times after work.
Quin parked and made her way up to the doorway of the apartment, eyes dry now. She'd never been inside before, but that was fine, her detective skills would be of use after all.
The outside was nondescript. Not too fancy, but not run down either. The lobby was the same, no doorman. There were mailboxes though, mailboxes with names on them. Quin found the one she wanted, then made her way up the stairs and down a hallway until she was standing in front of a door.
Raising a fist, Quin knocked on the door in front of her.

A knock came from the entrance. Ashton glanced away up from his beer, TV dinner, and game. He didn't know who it was, but they weren't interrupting anything important. The screen went black at one touch of a button. The detective rose and went to the door. His team had been losing. Who the heck would want to interrupt that?
He peered through the eye hole, then blinked and arched one brow. His hand went to the knob. Another unfastened the deadbolt on the door. He opened it for her.
"Quin," He said. He took a step back, to clear the doorway for her so she could come in. The invite didn't need saying. Through the peek hole, he'd seen it was her. But peek holes weren't clear enough to take in the full sight. She'd been crying. He had no idea why. "What's wrong?" He asked. He spared a glance towards his meal. "You caught me at dinner. Do you... want a beer?"

For a moment, Quin wondered if she'd made a mistake. Coming here, like this, after what had just happened was a really bad idea. Still though...she'd knocked, and there were already footsteps.
The door opened, and suddenly Quin felt incredibly awkward standing in the hallway. He was eating, having a beer...she'd caught him at dinner. All of the things registered separately.
"I'm sorry....I can come back." she said, then frowned, worrying at her bottom lip for a moment.

Apparently, he did need to vocalize the invite. "Come on in, then," He said. Turning away from her, he led the way. He paused at the coffee table by his beer, picked it up and handed it to her. It was already open, and still cold. Then, he went to get his own. There were chairs and a couch. She could sit wherever she liked.
He left her like that for a few seconds. The fridge door opened and shut. He came back holding an apple with three fingers, and a beer. Plopping down on the couch, he tossed her the fruit.
"Spill," He said. Hopefully, she realized he wasn't asking her to ruin the carpet.

Luckily, when Ashton came back and tossed her the apple, Quin was paying attention. She caught the apple with her free hand, took a swig of the beer she'd been handed, and then set it on the table. The apple, she held between her hands as she sank down into one of Ashton's chairs.
He wanted her to spill.
"He broke up with me." she said, hoping that her eyes and nose weren't too red and that her distress with the situation wasn't too obvious.
"I went over there for our one year anniversary dinner, and before I could even take my coat off...we started talking, and then we broke up."
Quin paused, and frowned, and then slumped back in the chair, leaning her head against her hand (and the apple.)

An ass.
Quin set down the apple and picked up the beer. That was one way to look at things...and she supposed that yes, Nate was an ass. She nodded her head...and thought.
Unfortunately, it didn't help.
"It wasn't his fault." she said softly, frowning as she looked down the neck of the beer bottle. "At least not entirely."
Another pause. Another sip.
"Have you ever tried to make something work simply because it's supposed to?"
"My heart wasn't in it. Hasn't been, for a long time."

She was getting awfully down on herself. Which was a load of crap, really.
"Isn't this the same guy who lied to you? Wasn't it something serious? You never told me what it was, but..." He shook his head. "I don't think it was all your fault."
Really. Crap. Why would any of it be her fault? The guy had betrayed her trust about something. She'd tried, and he'd dumped her. What kind of idiot would dump Quin?

Serious was a word that could have been used to explain what had happened between her and Nate. As Ashton asked, Quin nodded her head.
"It was serious enough to make me doubt every single thing he'd said or done since he'd met me."
Brows drew together as the MRC-Intern studied the label on the beer bottle, anything to avoid looking at her partner. He was asking all the right questions, bringing up all the helpful points. It was what she needed, even if she didn't really want it.
"We were working through things though. Finally making progress..." She'd even started calling him Nate again. It had taken what had appeared to be a fatal injury to make it happen, but she'd gotten there.
The redhead took a deep breath, let it out in a long sigh, and set the beer down on the coffee table. "C'est la vie, I suppose."

>>"It was serious enough to make me doubt every single thing he'd said or done since he'd met me."
Yeah. That sounded serious.
He noticed she was avoiding eye contact. He took a note of that.
>>"We were working through things though. Finally making progress..."
She was working through it. And she came to a conclusion.
>>"C'est la vie, I suppose."
She still wasn't looking at him. He tried to pass his next remark off as casual as he relaxed his shoulders and considered his beer. "What was it he lied about, anyways?" Ashton asked.

The real question here wasn't what Nate had done, it was whether or not telling Ashton was a good idea. What would he think about her if he knew that she'd tried to stay with Nate, even after knowing everything he'd done?
The apple was still on the table, and Quin picked it up again. It was necessary to have something to fidget with when you were trying to avoid a topic of conversation. There had been no subtlety though, and the only way to avoid answering would be far too obvious.
"Everything. Even his name." Quin said finally, barely above a whisper. It was surprising how much that still hurt. It was the iceberg to the Titanic that had been their relationship. It had taken a while, but they'd finally sunk.
"It was all in the past, but still...I didn't even know his name."

That... was sort of unforgivable. When he heard it, he couldn't help but suck in a tiny puff of air. Not a huge gasp. Not unnoticeable, either.
He had to think real hard about responses, here. She was hurting, and it would pay to be delicate. The whole 'ass' comment was still valid on every level. Ashton shook his head.
"And he dumped you. You're obviously the better person here, Quin... him lying to you about all of that is a lot. I sure wouldn't have forgiven him. He really doesn't--" His eyes shifted her way, off the neck of his beer bottle, and his cheeks suddenly felt hot. All he could do was finish. "Know what he lost."

Yeah. That sharp little intake of breath pretty much said it all. The sound drew Quin's eyes and she watched as Ashton spoke. She wanted to point out more technicalities, like the fact that it probably could have been called a mutual break-up. She also wanted to point out that at the time, Nate had been trying to turn over a new leaf and hadn't wanted his past to come between them.
Why was she making excuses though? Nate didn't deserve them. Not anymore.
Ashton looked her way, and Quin met his eyes.
There was that too. That niggling little memory that wouldn't get out of the back of her mind. The explosion, the fire, that kiss. The situation was almost an antonym to what had happened with Nate. Ashton had come completely clean, without guile or games.
Did he know what she was thinking? Her cheeks were warm too.
"Thank you for that." she whispered sincerely when he'd finished speaking.

"No problem," he said. Leaned forward. Set his beer bottle down, and grabbed dinner. The meal was lukewarm by now. At least it wasn't ice cold. He had a fork and knife for it. He used them to cut into the chicken-fried steak. Steak escape. "If you want to stay and rant for a while..." He said, dropping his voice to make sure it came off gently. "I was just watching some football. But I'm not too attached to that choice."
Was she going to eat that apple, or use it like a stress ball all night?

"You can watch your game." she said, relaxing back into her chair as Ashton grabbed his dinner and proceeded to eat. Yeah, she was going to hang around a while, nothing good would come of her going home alone. There was a whole pint of organic strawberry ice cream in her freezer, which was apparently more than could be said for Ashton.
She gestured at the TV dinner with the apple, then took a bite. "You actually eat that stuff?" she said, "Your sodium is probably through the roof."
