The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The overcast day added a noticeably greater amount of gloom to the whole atmosphere. He felt like the lone thing standing stark against the grey pile of rubble and grey skies. He was alone, trying to reconcile in his head what had happened with his own memories. Kai had already been over everything with a suspicious and extremely thorough insurance representative. She hadn’t seemed to think that he’d really had a legitimate business and insisted on seeing tons of paperwork and receipts that, obviously, had not been preserved in the total destruction of his home and business.
The papers in his hand flapped in the slight breeze. He was supposed to be filling out claim forms. But really, how could anyone put a price on each and every plant life that he’d lost?
He leaned down and scooped up a small pile of ashes. This was all that was left of his livelihood and his friends. The only one that had been spared was the miniature pine that he’d moved to the mansion earlier. The loss was staggering. Kai let the ashes slip between his fingers and tried not to weep. He’d gotten in plenty of crying in the past few days and needed to get a grip.
Ever since Amber had discovered her power that fateful night at the flower shop, she had been having nightmares about the incident. While she knew that Aura had done what she had to in order to protect herself and Kaitlyn, she couldn't help but remember all the blood and fear and everything else that had happened. Unfortunately because of everything that had happened and her turning into a dinosaur for the first time, the memories were fuzzy and jumbled. She needed to know what happened, she needed to see for herself, in the light of day, the results of that night.
Amber had waited patiently for a day to arrive that she could actually go outside safely, a day where the clouds hid the harmful sun from her sensitive skin. Normally she would simply leave at night but this was different, this was something she had to see by daylight. This was the arrival of that day and she approached it with a combination of fear, anticipation and confusion.
The bus ride to the shop was uneventful and rather shorter than expected, or maybe that was just her own mind playing tricks with the time. Finally she got off the bus, feeling that it was far too soon and that she had put it off for far too long all at the same time. The damage to the place was staggering in daylight, with rubble and debris everywhere. Spotting another figure in front of the building, Amber almost turned around and fled right there. It was difficult to tell, but she thought he might have been familiar. Had he been present that night? Was the the mutant covered in bark when she had fled to find Kaitlyn and ensure the two of them got back to Sanctuary safely? She adjusted her veil nervously, frozen in place and hoping not to be noticed.
At the sound of gravel crunching under little feet, Kai spun around suddenly. He had thought that he was alone! Well, except for all the people passing by on the busy street, but those he had managed to tune out. The crunching, however, was a different sound. For the most part passersby avoided stepping on the wreckage.
A girl stood on the edge of the destruction zone. She looked kind of familiar, but Kai couldn’t place her. Had he seen her before? Where? When?
So many of his memories around the time of the explosion were scrambled and jumbled, he had a hard time remembering the stuff that happened around then. “Uh… Hi, is there something that I can do for you?” he asked. He didn’t mean to be overly polite and maybe that phrase was out of place, but it’s what he would have said standing in this same place only a few short days ago.
Amber knew that most of the destruction wasn't her fault, not really. It had been those humans who had attacked them and Aura and the little girl Kaitlyn and it wasn't even really Kaitlyn's fault because she didn't mean to blow the place up. Still, Amber had been there and caused at least some of the damage. Whoever owned this place would, at the very least, have to pay a lot of money to restore it, if it was even possible to restore and the couldn't' help but feel responsible in some way.
“Uh… Hi, is there something that I can do for you?”
"I-I'm sorry." It wasn't what Amber had meant to say but it just came out. Her voice cracked at the end and she realized she was close to tears. She was almost certain, now, that she did recognize this person. His voice, if not his exact appearance, was familiar. He had been the bark mutant that was there that night, the one that had demanded they leave. That had been frightening, but they had deserved it hadn't they?
"I d-didn't m-mean for a-anything b-bad t-to happen. I w-was j-just going for a w-walk a-and then w-we were a-attacked a-and I g-got s-scared and ch-changed a-and there w-was so m-much b-blood and th-then I r-ran away." She hadn't really meant to say all of that either, it just sort of came out despite any conscious decision on her part, one way or another. Amber didn't even know if it really made any sense, but it was something that needed to be said. "I-I'm sorry."
The heavily swaddled figure nearly broke down into tears. Kai observed her display and pieced-together explanation with calmness. She seemed to think that his shop being destroyed was somehow her fault. And then he remembered. The two little girls. The explosion and the dinosaur. That must have been what she meant by "changed".
Well... He only blamed one person for the massacre that had occurred and for the shops destruction and it certainly wasn't this girl. He nodded, genuinely accepting her apology since she felt the need to give it. "Thank you, I understand that you got scared. Would you believe that I did too?"
He shivered remembering the blood and violence himself. "I still don't really know what happened, or how," he confessed honestly, "but I know it wasn't your fault..."
Amber was so grateful that the teenager didn't blame her for what had happened that she didn't even know how to express it. She felt tears at the edges of her eyes and had to struggle to prevent them from falling. Until she had arrived at this place, seen everything that had happened and actually spoken to the person it most affected, she hadn't realized just how guilty she felt. Actually talking about it was like a weight being lifted from her.
"Y-you were s-cared too?" Amber asked, in a small voice. He had looked so intimidating and so sure of himself with his bark skin she was certain that he hadn't felt an ounce of fear. Looking it him now, though, with very much human eyes and in the daylight, she realized that he couldn't be much older than she was.
"I d-don't even know w-what really h-happened, it w-was all so f-fast. And th-then I ch-changed for the f-first time and th-that made it even m-more confusing." That didn't make things any better, really, but it was the only explanation she had. "C-can I d-do anything to h-help?" It was the least she could offer.
Kai walked cautiously over to the dinosaur mutant, trying to be sure of his footing in a shifting, rocky pile. As he approached, he noticed more about her. He had thought previously that she was very young, clinging to the other mutant as she had several nights ago. But she was taller than he had originally estimated, making her seem much closer to his age.
Well don’t I feel old now? he thought despondently, but then again, not very many people my age have experienced… this. He blinked away tears and tried to concentrate on what she was saying. It was hard to pick out whole words; she seemed as distraught by everything as he was or at least just as upset.
“That was the first time that you transformed?” Yep, I can imagine how turning into a dinosaur could upset things. His flashed back to that night, walking through rubble and flaming plants, fueling by anger and hatred. Those weren’t feelings that he relished, nor wanted to remember. Why did this happen? How did everything get so out of control?
>>"C-can I d-do anything to h-help?”
“I… I’m not sure. At this point all I can do is wait for the insurance claim to come through. They’re delaying because of the police call that was placed. They are willing to pay for accidental fires, but maybe not if they determine that it was intentional.” Was that too much information…? It’s nice to have someone to confide in. “Thanks for asking, though. That really means a lot.”
Amber watched carefully as the tree mutant approached her, trying to resist the urge to panic or flee or something equally irrational. He had forgiven her and wasn't nearly as scary as he was that night. In fact, he really wasn't scary at all now but she remembered what he'd been like and that was enough to convince her that she really didn't want to be the target of his wrath. Plus, being afraid tended to trigger inconvenient things like growing scales and feathers and she didn't much want to grow either one of those things right at the moment.
“That was the first time that you transformed?”
Amber nodded quietly. "Its h-happened a few t-times since then, but I'm s-still not t-too sure how it works." At least when she trasformed now she didn't constantly feel like she was at risk of falling over though, even if she still didn't really no how to change or change back properly.
"M-my name's Amber. W-what's yours?" She wanted to be able to help but even if she couldn't just yet, she thought it would be good to at least know who the tree mutant was. "I'm p-pretty sure th-the explosion w-was an accident. K-Kaitlyn does that s-sometimes." Just one more reason to be thankful that her own power wasn't terribly dangerous to others.
He felt kind of bad for his behavior that night when he saw the fear in her eyes when he came towards her. He must have been scary then, what with his body covered in bark and barking orders. The description of her first time transforming made him realize that that night had really been his first time, as well. Never before, or since really, had he grown that much on his body. Which also reminded him of trying to get rid of all those plants the first time. No one would have thought he was scary if they’d seen him shedding little bits of bark all over the place for two whole days. And, Oh how it had itched. No to mention that he felt kind of sick for those two days.
“Transformations can be tricky, I’m still learning a lot about how my own works... I’m Kai. And you said that Kaitlyn caused the explosion? Are you sure?” He had been so certain that it had been Aura who’d caused it somehow. She’d had bombs there, hadn’t she? He’d just assumed… Kai shook his head, trying to ignore a sinking feeling that he’d attacked an innocent person. It doesn’t matter, she killed all those guys.
“The police specialist said it looked like a bomb went off. That’s what caused the fire, too. Something technical about hitting a gas main and the loose electrical wires…” Now who’s the one babbling?
Apparently there were more people than Amber had first realized that didn't know everything there was to know about their powers. It was strangely comforting. "N-nice to meet you Kai. C-can you grow things o-other than b-bark?" Now that she had made her peace with him, at least somewhat, she was feeling just a little bit curious. Hopefully he wouldn't take the question as rude but she was not only still learning about her own power, but about mutant powers in general.
"I'm sure it was K-Kaitlyn," Amber answered because she was, unfortunately, sure. "B-but it was an a-accident. She d-din't mean to," she was sure to add. Kaitlyn was such a sweet little girl and it wasn't her fault that she was dangerous, not really. "She j-just doesn't know h-how to control her p-powers yet." Kind of like her, except her dinosaurs forms didn't break things.
"I'm s-so sorry about your sh-shop," Amber apologized again because she really didn't know what else to say. She looked down to the ground as she normally did when nervous. Soon she would have to go inside, even with the thick clouds overhead, threatening rain, she could feel her skin begin to become inflamed. Such was the curse of her condition.
Amber tried to defend Kaitlyn and apologize her blowing up the shop in the same breath. He chose, however, to focus on her first question first. The easiest way to do that was to show her. He rolled up his right sleeve.
“It took me a couple of days resting before I was able to grow this guy again.” Indicating the baby vine wrapped around his wrist. It was kind of a comforting thing at this point to have it there. Like a bracelet you wear everyday, he felt naked without it. “I can also grow vines, and leaves, and possibly other things, but I haven’t really pushed the bounds of that. But there are draw backs to every power.”
Absentmindedly, he scratched at the base of his vine and the edges of the forest green patch of skin there. Honestly, he wished that he could show people what he saw when he looked at plants and at his own plant parts. It was super cool, even if it caused him some problems. Blood and chloroplasts were not meant to flow in the same body.
“What happened when you transformed some of those other times? Is it getting any easier for you?” He detected curiosity in her voice and demeanor and was just as curious himself. Plants he understood. Dinosaurs were… foreign to say the least.
Amber gazed in fascination at the vine growing out of Kai's arm, reaching out to touch it before she could even think that it was probably rude to do so. The moment she realized what she had just done, she jerked her hand back, turning her black eyes back to the ground. Why was she so very inept when it came to dealing with people, especially mutants?
"That's a-amazing," Amber stated, her voice clearly expressing her awe. Vines were definitely not half as scary as bark skin, or at least that one little vine wasn't. She could well imagine how terrifying it could be if he started growing giant vines and sent them after people like evil green snakes. She shuddered at the thought, then realized it was probably just her overactive imagination anyway. Maybe. Hopefully. Or maybe that was just another reason not to get on his bad side again.
"Once I h-had a m-mob of p-people chase me," Amber answered. Not an experience she wanted to repeat. "B-but last t-time I actually m-managed to ch-change at will." Pride in those words, it had been a big day and a big accomplishment. "Unfortunately I w-wasn't so good at ch-changing b-back." She gave Kai a sheepish look. "And d-dinosaurs c-can't t-talk." But could, with a little creativity, text message.
Amber snatched her hand away from him as if she’d been bitten and Kai was deflated for a moment. Before she breathed “That’s a-amazing.”
Maybe she just had to control her mutation, her surmised, She wouldn’t be the first mutant that I’ve met who just couldn’t refrain from eating plants. He shrugged, shyly, not wanted to brag. The little vine actually was quite the accomplishment for him and he’d missed it sorely after the ‘incident’ when he’d forced it to grow really long in a short amount of time, resulting in a weaker vine that he’d had to prune because it hadn’t been strong enough. He smiled, amusedly at the memory, oh how he’d yelped when he had cut it! It was funny now, but man, it had stung!
Mob people? Geez, how does this kid get into so much trouble? Kai asked himself, conveniently forgetting his own run-ins with the less-than-law-abiding and even the law enforcement. “That all sounds really… well, overwhelming. I would imagine that suddenly turning into a dinosaur would be quite upsetting. I can at least decide what parts of me are changing.” (sometimes) “And not being able to talk must also be difficult. But with all that, what’s it like? Being a dinosaur, I mean. Do you still feel like you and everything?”
He asked the last question hesitantly. It could be a touchy subject, and was certainly a scary idea for him. But what an interesting conversation to be having, discussing a real dinosaur in the middle of New York.
"It w-was scary," Amber agreed, nodding. It was also most definitely not something that she ever wanted to repeat. It was just fortunate that she had a sister like Aura to teach her how to defend herself and teach her just how dangerous humans could be. Not that she needed to be told twice after the whole mob incident.
Amber thought back to her few experiences as a dinosaur. None of them had really given her the proper opportunity to take proper stalk of how changing made her feel because all three shifts had been in time of fear and anxiety. In fact, she was beginning to suspect that it was the state of anxiety that triggered the shifts to begin with. Maybe that was something she could use when experimenting with the control of her powers which she fully intended to do in a much less public place than this.
"Its p-painful to change," Amber stated thoughtfully. She remembered that part very well as it was rather difficult to forget that sort of intense agony. "And i-its a little hard to c-control the new f-forms but that's g-getting better." She was pretty sure with enough time she'd be able to control them completely, but that would require a little more experimentation. "B-but I still l-love it. Each t-time I sh-shift it feels more n-natural. M-my skin is b-better when I-I'm transformed too. I th-think its a-almost how I'm m-meant to be."
“Meant to be?” he repeated after her. It was an absurd notion to him. He was meant to be human shaped, wasn’t he? Albeit human shaped and in the forest, but still human shaped. Right?
He fingered the small vine. It felt so, well, natural for it to be growing out of him, and yet that wasn’t regular human shaped. His stomach gurgled and he recalled his digestive troubles, now a minor irritation but a major hindrance when he’d been covered in a living bark suit. Look at the fall out, the repercussions. This must not be right. Still, he was loath to get rid of it. It was a part of him now.
“At least your skin gets better,” he commented, “Mine seems to get all funny.” He indicated the green patch. “From what I can tell, I can absorb sunlight this way, but it is kind of a strange sensation. And it itches a lot.”
