The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Amber could see the confusion in Kai's face when she described what it felt like to shift, but she didn't have any other words to describe it. It felt like she was supposed to be able to change shape and she was certain it would one day feel just as natural for her to be a dinosaur as it did for her to be human. It was just another part of who she was and it was only a matter of how much time she needed to learn to fully control it, almost like a child learning to walk for the first time.
Amber found the patch of green skin to be almost as fascinating as the plant growing out of it. "D-does that mean you d-don't have to eat?" There was genuine curiosity in her voice. What must it be like to not have to eat? For that matter, could he taste sunlight? And if he could, what did it taste like? Probably a stupid question to ask though.
"W-what does it f-feel like to have a p-plant growing out of you?" Amber asked, instead. She was pretty sure that was a far less stupid sounding question. She didn't exactly have much experience with plants, except for a very small amount of school biology.
He nodded gravely, “Yes, I still have to eat. The rest of me takes normal food, but the plant seems unable to adapt to living off of hamburgers or worse, vegetables. It’s more simple, just sunlight. And I have to drink extra water to make sure that it doesn’t wilt or have weak patches.” He laughed. “I’ve watched it before and its really funny to see how the blood flows around that spot, but can’t be absorbed and the chloroplasts move around, too. It’s like a Christmas dance with all the green and bluish-red. Though it can be kind of upsetting when they get mixed up. That’s happened to me before and it makes me kind of sick. The human parts are still human and don’t know how to live off sunlight, or so it would seem. Anyway, the green bit seems to absorb just enough to keep the vine going but not so much that there’s waste.” At least at the moment…
He was excited to share about these relatively new discoveries, as he was just getting to know and understand this new power himself. Though some of the knowledge was coming by trial and error, it was still exciting.
He continued to answer her second question. This one required less science-y speak and more just sharing the experience. “It’s awesome!” Kai exclaimed, his eyes lighting up, “It’s like I was missing a limb before and it just feels… I don’t know, right, when its there. I have to say that it was nerve wracking the first time it happened. Even though it felt cool and it made me really appreciate the sun more, I had no idea how to get it off! That was an adventure. But this vine,” he tapped it, “It’s a part of me.”
Maybe that’s the way being a dinosaur feels? “I guess maybe I understand your shifting a little after all, if it feels similar.”
Amber could understand how all of that might be a little bit difficult, not to mention confusing to deal with. Maybe it was another thing to consider with her own power; would she be restricted by what she could and could not eat? She hadn't actually eaten while shifted before but she knew that some dinosaurs ate plants while others at meat and it could even be more complicated than that with some eating only certain kinds of plants. That was an experiment she filed away in the back of her mind for further discovery.
"W-what does s-sunlight taste like?" Amber turned bright red, not being able to believe that the question had even come out of her mouth. Yes she was curios, but she hadn't actually meant to speak the words out loud. Here she went again, completely embarrassing herself with nonsensical questions. Would she ever learn how to interact with others like a normal person? Apparently not.
Trying to forget about her stupid question, Amber grinned at Kai's description of how right his own power felt to him. "I th-think its p-part of being a mutant. W-we're designed for our p-powers. W-what feels right for you w-would be c-completely foreign to me and th-the other w-way around." She wondered if other mutants had similar impressions. Calley seemed to think the same about his own power, neither Aura nor Abyss had mentioned anything about there's. Then again, Abyss wasn't a shifter nor could he grew new parts so maybe he wasn't a good example.
"D-do you think o-others feel l-like this?" The mutant world was something that Amber was still getting used to and although her experiences so far had been mostly positive, it wasn't always easy. Well, her experiences with mutants had been mostly positive, with humans it had been a little hit or miss.
What she said about mutants and their powers also seemed to fit what he knew of other mutants. He and Cam were certainly shaped by their powers, so that they fit together with plants perfectly. “I bet other mutants do feel the same, at least some of them. And humans, probably, too. When they do something that just… fits. Like if someone is really good at painting, they’d love doing it. Though, I guess that’s not really the same, is it?”
He then turned to the issue of sunlight. Kai grinned at her enthusiasm and considered her question carefully and seriously. What does sunlight taste like? He’d never really thought of it as a taste before, because, after all, there were no taste buds on his arms or chest or other places that he’d grown plants before. Maybe if I grew one on my tongue, the patch of green would be there and I’d be able to taste the sunlight…
“Well, it feels warm. And good, like when it’s been cloudy for a long time and the sun hits you for the first time and it just makes you happy and alive and energized. I don’t really know how else to describe it. So…” he turned the question a little bit, “I’ve always kind of wondered- What is dino-vision like? Is it still in color?”
Amber had always been a curious child, she just couldn't help it. Any time she had access to books or museums or really anything that encouraged learning, she was all over it. Science was just such a fascinating topic, especially the biological sciences and while plants had never been a particular focus of her interest, they were within the broader range of it. One day, perhaps, she might even end up going to university to study it further, if the whole mutant thing didn't stand in the way of that. It was a rare and fascinating opportunity to speak with someone so intimately familiar with the world of plants.
Amber was greatly relieved that Kai didn't simply laugh at her question. In fact, much to her surprise, he actually seemed to take it seriously. "The s-sun doesn't f-feel like that to me," she stated sadly, feeling the prickle of irritation across the exposed strip of skin near her eyes. "The s-sun j-just burns me. I c-can't go out in it." In fact she probably should be thinking of going back inside before her burned flesh got too bad, but when else was she going to get such an opportunity?
"I th-think dino vision is d-different for different d-dinosaurs," Amber answered thoughtfully. "I c-can only ch-change into two f-forms right now. They s-see a lot like us, except b-better, sharper. S-still in colour. And they ch-chirp like b-birds." Ok, so maybe he hadn't asked about that last part, but she knew she had certainly been fascinated to hear what a dinosaur sounded like first hand. Previously she always thought the roared and maybe larger dinosaurs did, but not her dinosaurs.
He couldn’t believe his ears. The sun burnt her? So much so that she couldn’t go out in it? Kai was simply flabbergasted. He’d wondered at her strange clothing, but there could be so many explanations for being covered the way she was including sensitive ones such as religion or culture, so he hadn’t wanted to pry. Now that she’d mentioned it, however, he paid notice to where the sun was at that moment. The day had started out cloudy but was starting to clear. Was that bad for her?
Kai decided that he liked Amber. She was a good conversationalist, expressing genuine interest in his plants and divulging all the interesting details about turning into a dinosaur. Well, two dinosaurs. He smiled a little, amused that two such different topics could be woven together and still keep both parties interested. He wanted their chat to keep going, but…
“Say, I don’t want to hurry this discussion. It’s so fascinating, but it looks like it’s starting to clear up and perhaps we should move inside somewhere. Is there some place you needed to go yet today? I was just on my way back to the mansion- it’s a school across town where I’m currently living- but I’d be willing to escort you wherever you’d like to go first.”
"Inside is g-good," Amber agreed. She knew she was going to suffer for days for this little trip. Her skin would be red and peeling as if she had gotten a terrible sun burn and she'd have to apply cream to it. Although she'd had to deal with her condition her entire life, it never seemed to get much easier. Black eyes she could deal with because all that meant was she looked a little strange but her albinoism was different. It made her feel deficient.
"I d-don't have anywhere to go," Amber answered. She really was enjoying their conversation and the mention of him living at the Mansion made her even happier. "I l-live at S-Sanctuary but I'll be g-going to school at the M-mansion soon. M-maybe we'll h-have classes together."
It struck Amber as funny that she kept meeting people from the Mansion, first Koga and now Kai. Aside from her family and Kaitlyn, she hadn't really spent much time with the people in Sanctuary although that was probably partly because most of them were much older than she was. "D-did you need to leave?"
“The Sanctuary? Well, never mind then. I don’t actually have to go anywhere right now either, so maybe… well, there’s this great little ice cream parlor that’s just up the road here. Interested?” Kai led the way, skirting the outlying debris that had been pushed out from the epicenter and was encroaching on the sidewalk. He continued to chat as he walked.
“We might have classes together. I don’t know, I haven’t really been there that long and mostly moved in because I met some of the mutants there and it was nice to know other mutants in the city. And then when my apartment…” He gestured to the remnants of the building, “well it just seemed like the best option. Anyway, I haven’t actually registered for any classes yet. I hear they’re not required, so I might not… unless they have one on plant biology. Or dinosaurs.” He winked, to show that his obvious joke was, in fact, a joke.
There were many ways in which Amber was not a normal teenager, which didn't even count the fact that she was a mutant. Her sensitive skin for one thing and her actual enjoyment of school work and learning. One way in which she was typical of teenagers everywhere, however, was the fact that she loved ice cream. Especially on a hot summer day, how could anyone not love the stuff?
"Ice c-cream sounds great," Amber agreed, following Kai away from the ruined remains of the shop. Looking up at the quickly clearing sky, she realized that she might have to find a place to stay for a few hours until dusk fell anyway. Her skin could only take so much and it was just about at its limit now. Either that or she'd have to shift into a dinosaur and go from there, but given her last experience shifting in a public place, that seemed like a bad idea.
"I l-love biology of all s-sorts," Amber stated, grinning at Kai's joke. She was, in fact, hoping to go to university in a few years for just that subject. Of course, given her mutation archeology would be the most logical field of study for her, but anything to do with life, ancient or current, was of interest. Besides, she didn't really need to have her mutation define her entire life, did she?
Score one for ice cream! Now that the idea was planted in his brain, Kai found himself craving the delectable frozen substance, as well. His mouth was dry with a thirst that only ice cream could satisfy. Vanilla or Chocolate or maybe Strawberry! Kai virtually skipped down the street. When he was focused on something else- like the simple pleasures in life, he forgot about all his troubles.
“I like chemistry and biology. I’m not quite as good at physics, but that’s interesting, too. And there’s a bunch of stuff that I probably would think is interesting, but haven’t had a chance to study yet. I, erm, haven’t really been to school much in the past couple years. Left home and, whatever. Anyway, I’m kinda nervous about having to study again. I wasn’t really the best student, just wanted to sit outside all day.” Kai chattered happily.
Kai's ice cream related enthusiasm was contagious and Amber found herself skittering after him, putting completely out of her mind her sun related problems. There really wasn't a better way to forget about one's problems for a short while that to have sweet, devious ice cream. Next to her violin, ice cream might just have been the best way to avoid dealing with one's problems. Not that she really had all that many to deal with at that exact moment.
"I'm not too g-good at math or physics," Amber answered. They had always been her week points. "B-but I do study hard and one d-day I want to b-be a scientist. Have you t-tried studying outside?" Amber noticed the glossed over reference Kai made to his past but thought it better not to pry. After all, her own past was rather depressing too and she mostly didn't like talking about it. Maybe when they got to know each other better.
“Huh, no I guess I never did think about studying outside. It’s pretty distracting out there what with all the plants around and stuff. But I guess it could be comforting and I could actually get work done if I tried it out there… There it is, Pete’s Ice Cream Parlor. They have the best waffle cones ever.”
They were approaching a small shop, with large windows and a cartoon-version of an ice cream cone painted on one. Kai opened the door and held it for Amber to go first. “After you,” he smiled respectfully, “So, what kind of science are you interested in going into?” Could it be, a topic that we legitimately have in common? “I wanna do biochemistry of some kind, maybe teach eventually.”
Kai took his place at the end of the line, keeping an ear out for her answer while also contemplating his ice cream and topping choice.
Amber's grin broadened as the giant ice cream cone came into view. She really did have to remember to continue to appreciate the simple things in life, like ice cream. Mutant or not and regardless of whether humans were to be feared or embraced, there were just some things in life that should never be forgotten or taken for granted and this was clearly one of them.
"P-plants are distracting?" Amber asked. She liked plants just as much as the next person but had never found them to be terribly distracting before. Maybe it was some odd quark of his mutation or something like that.
Amber nodded her thanks at Kai as he held open the door for her and took her place in the line right behind him. "I'm thinking b-biology. I'm n-not too sure what a-aspect yet. S-so many choices." Most of which were fascinating. "I s-still have a f-few years to think about it though." Which was definately a good thing.
Kai turned back to answer her, “Oh yes, they are very distracting. They are all so excited when I’m around and they want to tell me all about themselves and what it’s like to be a plant… Sometimes it’s really interesting and I like to listen to them, but very distracting. Even if I try to tune them out, it’s like a buzz or ringing in my ears.”
Then he realized that he was not being very gentlemanly by going in front of her and stepped aside. “You can go first, if you like. I’m still deciding.” But of course he wasn’t. He was a loyal strawberry with Crunch! Bars mixed in customer. Still, he peered convincingly at the large buckets of pastel ice cream.
“Wait, what kind is that?” He pointed to a brilliant, neon, almost florescent green bucket. He’d never seen that color of ice cream before.
The girl behind the counter beamed at him and with an excessive amount of cheerfulness replied, “It’s Green Apple Gummy Bear! Would you like to try a sample?” She scooped up a small spoonful and handed it to him.
Kai stared at the spoon. It seemed to raise up from the spoon and try to latch onto his face. He brought the glowing green glob closer to his mouth… opened, and chomped down. “!”
"You're t-too kind," Amber replied, stepping in front of Kai. It really was a sweet gesture to let her go first. She was about to order her usual maple walnut with coconut sprinkles when Kai brought to her attention a bright green bucket of ice cream. She had never tried green ice cream before, especially not quite that shade of green. It was almost neon.
"C-can I have a s-sample too?" Amber asked. Curiosity warred with apprehensiveness at the prospect of possibly eating radio active ice cream. It just couldn't be healthy to have any food that colour, could it?
With a friendly smile, Amber, too received her spoonful of the odd coloured frozen treat. She sniffed at it and found that it didn't really smell like radio active. Then again, what did radio active smell like anyway? Looking expectantly at Kai, she decided the best thin to do was to wait until he had taken his first bite and judge his reaction before taking the plunge with a bite of her own.
