The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was the last Saturday evening in November when Chris was wandering toward the grocery store. There was something determined about the way he moved, an unusual firmness in his eyes. This was because he was on a very important mission - there was going to be a movie night this evening and Chris was the assigned Snack Fixer.
He never ate snacks himself, but he knew that they were crucial for a successful movie night so he couldn't screw this up. The guy who was arranging the movie night had said something like "by the way, Chris, could you get some snacks for tonight?" and handed him some bills in a kind of casual way. But Chris wasn't fooled by the casualness - he knew it was an important task he'd been given and that they all trusted that he'd get chips, soda and popcorn for everyone.
He wasn't even very nervous about it, because this particular store was close to the Mansion and therefore was used to mutant customers. Even if they weren't appreciated they were accepted. Chris glanced down on his wrist watch - twenty minutes until the movie night would start. He'd definitely make it back before that. He stepped in through the store's sliding door's and immediately froze. Something wasn't right here. Usually the customer's were shuffling around in the store in their own pace, filling their shopping basket's with groceries. This evening all of the customers - there were five of them - stood lined up against the wall next to the checkout with their grocery baskets on the floor in front of them. But the real give-away that something was wrong was the guy in a grey hoodie who currently had a gun pointed directly toward the cashier.
At the sound of the opening sliding doors the guy with the gun turned around, pointing his gun toward the newcomer. Chris caught a glimpse of his round, shocked eyes above some kind of scarf that covered the lower part of his face. "Who -?" the man with the gun started to say. Then he started to shiver. Then he let out a low moan, which rose to a warbling scream. It was now Chris realized that the guy probably was on something - there was just something about the way he moved, and sounded... plus, no-one with all their intellectual capacities in store would try to rob a place like this alone early in the evening. But this didn't do much to calm Chris down, not while the gun was still pointing at him. He felt stunned. Should he do something? Say something? He had no idea.
He also had no idea what was going on in the robber's mind. It must have been something horrible, because he was shaking worse than ever and managed to utter something that sounded like "Stay... stay away from me!!" in a choked voice. Then his grip tightened around the gun.
Chris's paralysis suddenly broke and he threw himself toward the floor. He needn't have bothered - the two shots shattered one of the revolving doors, one that had been almost three feet to the left of him. When Chris landed on the floor he immediately crawled in behind a shelf - he could hear more gunshots and the sound of shattering glass. Then silence - and the sudden silence after those deafening gun shots almost made him wonder if he'd been shot. But then he heard the sliding door open and running steps. Apparently the guy had emptied his gun and then decided to take his leave.
It was completely silent for almost twenty seconds before everybody in the store started to talk simultaneously - there was screaming, swearing and even some crying. Chris, on the other hand, still sat with his back pressed toward the shelves filled with cans and bottles. He started to shiver.

The police arrived on the scene too late to stop the destruction of property. Shin was with them, on a mission to watch and learn, but not say anything. That is what the person he'd been teamed up with that day had said. It wasn't the same person he'd been partnered with last time. They were shuffling him around to various departments, like the kid nobody wanted.
He eyed the crime scene, scratching the back of his neck. It was a mess. Luckily, nobody'd been killed that he could see. The detective was lining up witnesses to get statements. He had a face like a child that had eaten too much sour candy, young, but bitter, with squeezed cheeks. His brown eyes regarded the man next on his list of witnesses with impatience. Somewhere down the line, Shin spotted a familiar face. The guy looked like he wanted to get away from it all.
Shin scratched the back of his head uncomfortably. He waited for the detective to finish up interviews. No breaking rules for him, just to talk.
Chris stood lined up together with the other witnesses (the two standing next to him clearly leaning away from him) and nervously weighed from foot to foot. By now his quest for snacks had failed, and since he didn't own a cell phone he had no way to contact the kids at the mansion. But that didn't really bother him. No, what really bothered him was the cops, walking around and photografing the shattered glass panels and putting up tape. They was currently questioning the witnesses, starting with the young latino girl who'd been sitting behind the cash register. She was on the verge of crying, and it looked as if they were going to take her outside to question her separately.
Chris' pulse was racing and he was breathing faster - he had trouble standing still, and it was clearly hard for him to stay there and not just make a run for it. What would happen if he tried to escape, would they shoot at him? He didn't think so. This had just been a regular hold-up, no-one had been hurt, why couldn't they just let him go? Chris had no experience at all with policemen. He stayed on the right side of the law and did his best not to get in trouble, but whenever he saw a policecar he always made sure to make himself scarce. He didn't trust them.
Another thing that made him even more nervous was the fact that no-one had started to question him yet. He was the guy who'd been shot at and scared the robber away, he should have been the first. But except for a quick physical examination to make sure he wasn't hurt no-one had talked to him. Maybe it had something to do with his, Mongoose's and Meld's trip to the sushi restaurant a year ago? It was during his first week in New York, and it had been the first time he'd met other mutants and the first time he'd went to a sushi restaurant. And it had been the first time he'd seen someone get killed. They had been attacked by a violent anti-mutant group at the restaurant, and Chris' memory was a bit blurry (he'd been quite panicked at the time) but he clearly remembered that at least two of the mutant-haters had been killed by Meld. Chris had escaped, but what if the witnesses at the restaurant pointed out him as a part of the brawl? He was pretty unmistakeable, after all. Would he still be in the police's files after all this time? A growing uneasiness told him that yes, that was probably the case. Oh god. They'd drag him away to the police station and lock him up in one of those interrogation cells, just like in the movies. Chris started to shiver.
He was so swept up in his angst that he didn't even notice that Shin had walked ito the grocery store.
((If you want to check out what happened at the sushi restaurant Chris mentions, you can take a look at theultimatexmen.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=newyorkcity&action=display&thread=5171&page=4 Otherwise, here's a quick summary - Meld kills/hurts some of the guys and then escapes, Mongoose is part of the brawl but doesn't kill anyone and is catched and questioned by the police. He mentions Chris' first name and gives a description of him, but he and the other witnesses should make it clear that Chris was not a part of the brawl or the cause of someone's death. Still, the police have not had a chance to speak with him since and would probably be interested in doing so.))

Yes. That was exactly the case. As the detective wrapped up the questioning with the Latino girl, he stepped back inside the building, dusting his hands off as if to smack away the remnants of unpleasantness less on his person. He squeezed his lips together, looking the line top to bottom, then settled his eyes on the grayish mutant. He jerked a thumb over his shoulder, towards the questioning area, never taking his eyes off of Chris.
"You're next," he said, voice hard.
Shin blinked. What had happened to the line's order? Had it all been a distaction?
Chris looked up nervously when he heard the harsh voice say "You're next!" He looked hopefully from left to right, but unfortunately there was no mistake that it was him the detective was looking at. Chris hung with his head as he started to walk towards the question area, looking like a convict on the way to the gallows. What if they took him into custody? He had done nothing wrong, but who knew what could happen... And he did not want to be locked in together with druggers and thugs and other miscreants. Hopefully they would have a special custody for mutants... but then he remembered some of the more inordinate mutants he'd met and decided that he'd rather takes his chances with the human criminals.
Then, suddenly, he recognized a familiar face. Shin! Shin was standing some distance away, but since the detective was standing next to the door with his arms crossed waiting for Chris he didn't dare go and speak with his fellow mansionite. Instead he tried with a desperate form of sign language, all while walking towards the door. Shin! I'm in trouble! Like, really deep trouble! This was followed by Chris pointing at himself and then wringing his hands. Can you... Chris pointed at Shin. ...get me out of here? Or... or anything, I don't know really, just... anything? This was illustrated by some confused hand movements towards the door followed by a shrug. Well, hopefully he'd gotten his point across. The detective stepped aside so Chris could walk out to the questioning area.

The detective found all of this sign language business ridiculously silly. Shin just could not follow it. What was Chris getting at? Was he guilty? Did he need help? Did he want to get out of here? Was the well occupied by a young child named Timmy?
The detective cleared his throat. "Ahem." He looked Shin's way, eyes focused like a falcon's. "Do you know this man?" He was giving him the works when it came to mixed signals. It was easy enough to figure out.
"Yes..." Shin said tentatively. "But I don't know what he's flailing his arms for."
The detective looked at Chris. "What's your name?" He asked, crossing his arms.
"Do you know this man?" "Yes...But I don't know what he's flailing his arms for." Chris hung with his head. It seemed as if his sign language was a bit flawed. Not that it really mattered anyway; he didn't really think that Shin would have the ability to get him away from there. But it was good that he was there, of only as some kind of mutant representative to make sure everybody treated Chris nice or something.
"What's your name?" "Chris Berg, sir." Chris decided to be as polite as he possibly could be - perhaps they'd let him leave sooner if he just answered all they wanted to know. And if they started to ask about the incident at the sushi restaurant... it wasn't as if he'd done anything illegal, right? If anything, he was the victim here. He'd answer anything they wanted to know as long as he didn't had to follow them back to the police station.

"What happened here?" The detective asked about the crime. "And what do you know... about sushi?"
Sushi? Shin tilted his head. What did sushi have to do with anything? Sure, Chris was an avid lover of the stuff. Shin remembered. And Chris was a good kid. What was with the icy leading tone the officer had donned for the occasion? He was utterly lost.
Maybe Chris's answer would help him figure out where they were.
As soon as the detective uttered the word sushi Chris froze, like a deer in front of the headlights. His own decision to tell the cops exactly what they wanted to know was immediately forgotten. Oh no, they know, what do I do what do I DO?! "Not much, really," he heard himself say in a nervous way. "I mean, I like it alright, but I'm not an expert. I don't get the opportunity to eat it very often, I don't visit the town so much..." His eyes nervously darted from left to right - anywhere except toward the detective. It was so obvious he was hiding something that it wasn't even funny. Somehow, when the detective not immediately answered but just kept looking at him with his arms crossed and that same icy look in his eyes it made Chris talk even faster. "I... I can only eat raw fish and meat, you see, and all fish pretty much taste the same to me, except sushi. So I think it's awesome. I should really learn to make it myself and oh my God I didn't do it! Please don't hurt me!" Chris crumpled to the ground with his hands covering his head as if he half expected the cop to start kicking him. Bravo, Chris. Now we know you can handle exactly five seconds of interrogation before you break down, the sarcastic voice inside of him that showed up sometimes at the wrong moments said dryly.

He was covering. The detective could tell. All the nervous ticks were there. The tone of voice, the darting eyes, the avoidance. The detective didn't buy it. He stood firm. And eventually, the gray boy cracked.
"Huh." Shin stared, confused. "Do what?" Why was Chris acting that way? On the ground, covering his head? What in the world was going on here?
"We've been looking for you," the detective said. "Witnesses placed someone meeting your description at the scene of the crime. After you tell me what happened here," The detective's face cinched harder, if possible. He was in perpetual lemon-face. It might have looked good with a mustache. "You'll tell me what happened there." He finished. "You dig?"
"There. Here. What?" Shin's voice cracked. He wasn't following any of this.
Chris had never had any bad encounters with the authorities - or any good ones, either. Overall, he had barely had any encounters to speak of whatsoever. He had never actually talked to a policeman, or a detective, or something similar. That made the whole situation even more frighetning to him, since he had no experience in dealing with situations like this at all. Even though he was a full-grown man he was just as scared as a ten-year old kid who had been busted for shoplifting and was being questioned by a threatening mall security chief. And right now Chris was more afraid of the detective than he had been for anyone in a long time. This man had come to represent everything he feared about the authorities, and Chris was positively terrified of him.
"We've been looking for you," the detective said. No. This wasn't happening. This was a nightmare. "Witnesses placed someone meeting your description at the scene of the crime. After you tell me what happened here you'll tell me what happened there. You dig?" Chris didn't answer. A small rational voice inside him tried to tell him to calm down, to just tell them what they wanted to know so this could be over, this wasn't such a big deal. But this voice drowned in the un-rational cries that told him to flee, flee before it's to late, flee before they take you. He wasn't on the verge of panicking anymore, he had passed it. Chris bolted from crouching down on the ground to standing, the adrenaline pumping through his system making him move so fast it almost seemed spasmic. His eyes darted back and forth again, but now it wasn't as much to avoid eye contact as it was him looking for the closest escape route. He backed a few steps.

"Chris..." Shin held up a hand. This wasn't good. Chris was bolting. He didn't want to answer the guy's questions, and Shin didn't know why. "Don't. Detective. He's a good kid. I don't know what happened, but... don't run, Chris. Please."
The detective wasn't appreciative of people who ran from police. He didn't like em. Frankly, he hated their guts. "Stay where you are." He sneered.
Chris lifted his foot, as if to take another step backwards, but he stopped when Shin asked him not to run. He looked hesitantly from Shin and then to the detective again. He still wanted to run, but... that would just make everything worse, wouldn't it? It was so hard to be logical when your system was filled with adrenaline.
But what really made him fight the impulse to run was the way the detective told him to stay where he was. There was just something so cold about his voice that Chris suddenly got an image of himself turning around and trying to run away and then get shot in the back. Chris slowly put down his foot and took a deep breath.
"I... I'm not going to run. But... please don't take me to the police station." He immediately regretted asking, as if just asking not to take him there would make them decide to do just that. He looked at Shin in a kind of pleading way, as if he thought Shin might be able to stop them if they decided to do so. Probably not, he concluded. It didn't seem as if Shin had much actual authority here. But it was sitll good to have another mutant there. Chris turned toward the detective again, mentally bracing himself. "So what do you want to know?" he asked in a low voice.

Chris didn't run. He stayed where he was. That was good. Shin was relieved. He could breathe a bit easier now. Suddenly, he realized that for the whole few seconds Chris had been debating turning tail, he'd been holding that breath. A whole two seconds. That was actually longer than one thought.
Chris told them he didn't want to go the station. Shin still didn't know why. The way Chris was looking at him told him whatever reason he had, it was serious.
Then, he turned to the detective and asked him a question.
((OOC And I'm leaving the detective NPC to you.to control. ))
The detective frowned. "As I said earlier, start with what happened here. Then I want to know your version of what happened last year. I'm warning you, though - if your story doesn't match up with what we've previously heard, or if I feel that you're leaving gaps, we might have to take you in for a more thorough questioning." Chris nodded, then braced himself and started to tell what have happened here in the store. That was the easy part, since it had happened so recently and the whole thing had been over so fast. He'd entered the store, freaked out a junkie and almost gotten shot. The detective listened and took notes. Then Chris started to talk about what had happened last year. This was harder, since he had really wanted to forget all about that evening, but he wanted to make sure he got everything right anyway. The threat of being hauled off to the police station still hung over him.
He talked about how he'd met Meld and Anthony, that they've decided to go out for sushi and then had ended up in a fight. Or at least the two other mutants had ended up in a fight - Chris had just hid. The detective was still taking notes and now and then asked a follow-up question: how had Meld been acting before those men showed up? How had the people at the restaurant reacted to everything? Had he had any contact with Meld or Anthony Davids since that day? Chris answered to the best of his abilities.
As he got near to the end of his story his throat was beginning to feel coarse. He wasn't used to talking for long periods of time like this. "...and then I ran away." "Where did you run?" Chris shrugged. "I... I don't know really, I just ran. Then I hid in an alley somewhere." The detective noted it and then flipped through his notebook. His expression was hard to read. "Can I go now?" Chris asked hopefully. "First of all we need your phone number and address. If any new info should show up regarding this or the other case we need to be able to contact you." Then he frowned again. "But seriously, try to calm down if you ever have to work with the police in the future. If you try to run it only mess up our work and makes you look guilty. And we don't bring witnesses to the police station to waterboard them. I have enough problems without the mutant rights people jumping down my throat..."
Then he looked down at his notes again. "Does the name 'Aquaticus' say you anything?" Chris shook his head. "That's what he called you. Davids. 'One part Alien, one part god. Chris, his given name, and Aquaticus, the name I've given him.'" Chris hung his head. Really, Anthony? Really? The detective said curtly: "I think we're done here. Unless you have something to add, Shinbo?"
