The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Victory! She sat up after a few moments of wiggling and caught her breath, the blush seeping back to wherever it had come from. Twyla had just needed to be in more control of things, at least for the moment. The girl, of course, hadn’t said this as she’d tried to get up. She was about to explain herself when her boyfriend apologized, sounding a bit like he didn’t mean it at all. She smirked and made a point of fixing her messy hairdo just a bit--too much of it had fallen down when...she had.
“No, it’s no thing...” Twyla paused, unsure of how to word her sudden need to be sitting up. Maybe it had some ties to their intensely awkward and camo blush-inducing conversation of before? It was hard to say and she wasn’t really sure herself. This made it extremely difficult to put her explanation into words. “I just...I don’t know.” She laughed a bit. “It wasn’t you.” A quick kiss on the cheek was given before darting away. “I just needed to sit up.”
Or was it? For some reason Twyla was suddenly nervous and she plucked at the sleeves of her sweatshirt in an absentmindedly agitated motion. They hadn’t really talked about s-e-x before, maybe that was it? Come to think of it, there were a lot of things they hadn’t talked about recently, things that were more important [almost] than kissing and sex and all that [much more fun] stuff.
Without meaning to, the simmering pot inside of her head bubbled over and the young mutant suddenly found herself asking: “Is there something you need to tell me?”

Gawain leaned forward even more after agreeing with his girlfriend. Without her consent, Twyla’s breath hitched. This was more than slightly embarrassing and the girl blushed for the millionth time that night; if one looked at where her feet should have been they’d be hard pressed to see them. She tried her best to focus on his question, she really did, but it was super hard when she couldn’t even focus her eyes and she felt a little bit dizzy.
It simply wouldn’t do to lose her slightly intellectual train of thought all at once, not at all.
“Um...” Twyla swallowed and tried to retain as much cool as possible. “Technically we’re already home...” The girl twisted a bit so her eyes could actually see what was above her. She noted that Gawain looked like he was about to either smirk or start laughing. Instantly the ‘spell’ if it could be called that, was broken and the fluster was quickly replaced by some mild indignation.
“Jerk!” A hand came up to shove at the boy’s shoulder, pushing him away and then wrapping around the back of his neck to pull him closer. Twyla kissed him roughly on the mouth and then pushed and squirmed in an attempt to sit up.

The woman slumped in the chair was only half expecting the reactions that she got. Sure, she expected Henri to be comforting and to ask her why she hadn’t eluded to any of this sooner but on no level did she see Gawain’s anger or Henri’s half a threat coming. They both got so upset so fast that, despite Twyla’s tear stained face and her best intentions, she began to laugh. It was a husky, mucus-from-crying-filled laugh and it took over her entire frame. She shook in the chair and clutched her stomach to rock with her eyes closed. It wasn’t supposed to be funny at all, but for some reason it really was. The laughter lasted for a few moments, and it was well needed apparently. She felt a lot better once her giggles tapered off and she slowly sat back up.
“I’m sorry.” She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye that was more from laughing than crying. “I don’t know where that came from.” The woman looked sheepishly between her friend and her ex boyfriend. “I’m sorry that you guys had to see that.” Twyla made eye contact with Gawain for a moment as she said this--it was worse that he saw her episode than Henri seeing it. “Things have just been piling up--” Turning to Henri. “I didn’t want to tell anyone about the whole Kurt thing because I was embarrassed. He and I had been having issues for...a while.” Try a few years. “Thanks for the concern, but I’ve dealt with it...sorta.” A pat for both the man and the woman. A slight blush.
A sigh. She was going to come totally clean. “He didn’t have it all that great with me, honestly.” A pause and a gulp to suppress the emotion bubbling up in her through again. “We...wanted different things, you know? I was just too stubborn to admit that he didn’t want to get married or have kids. I was scared to admit that I’d made mistakes in judgment. I wasn’t ready for all that when I met him...and everything.” Her eyes found the floor and her blush increased. “But I didn’t want to see that he was never going to grow with me. It’s my own fault, at least partly, maybe mostly.” Her blush had crawled down her neck. “So he’s getting married and some friends back in Cali are finally going to be adopting a baby...that’s about it.” A nervous and shaking smile wiggled onto her face.

Twyla was pinned. She was trapped. She was stuck. Gawain held her down by the arms even after she ‘died’. She remained dead for a few moments, trying to keep her breathing as shallow as possible. She didn’t even open an eye until she felt the boy move and a hand on her face, smoothing her hair away from it. She contemplated flinging herself over so that she could get even with her boyfriend for the tickling. It was kinda nice to just lie there though...One eye opened, her mouth twitched into a smile, and then Gawain asked her a very valid question.
A pause, it was hard to keep a straight face and her thoughts in line. Twyla managed to keep general control over herself and her hormones. Enough to ponder out loud instead of giving a hasty answer. “Hmm.... I don’t know...” She quirked her lips and her eyes became thoughtful. “On the one hand, it’s a social tradition that good first dates end in a kiss, with minimal kissing during said date...” The girl looked up at the boy, trying to gauge his reaction and hold back her smirk.
“But...on the other hand, I’m pretty sure that our particular relationship has gone past that of first date awkwardness and getting-to-know-you and all that. I suppose there’s an argument for both sides...” Twyla smiled and tried not to stare at his lips for too long, making sure that her brown eyes flickered often enough back to his hazel ones.
“I also think it’s a situational rule and it depends on the people on the date...”

Twyla Ashby was on the verge of the breakdown she’d avoided having since the fateful night she got home early from work. She decidedly didn’t like being this close to the edge and feeling so thin. Matters were made worse by the fact that if she did indeed brake down it would be very public and possibly messy. This was not good. Mayday! Mayday! We’re going down!
Gawain sat on one side of her, making the tide of tears swell up again, Henri soon followed. When the other woman took her hand the dam almost broke but the woman managed to blink back the flood. She was about to b.s. her way though an answer to the man’s question when all four of the children came tearing through the hall, running like mad and looking like they were having the best time they could possibly have.
The conversation took a dangerous turn after that and Twyla’s lip began to quiver violently when Henri started talking about children. You’re fine, you can handle this. Just get to your room and-- “And when you have kids, I know you’ll be a great mom....I want you to know we’re here for you and that you’re like a sister to me.” That was it, either she exploded or she released the flood gates. Needless to say there was a lot of water.
About a minute was spent quietly sobbing before the brunette could get her act together enough to form coherent words. “He’s getting married.” Was all she could say at first and then after some wiping of her face with her sleeve, Twyla found herself continuing. “Kurt, he cheated on me--he’s marrying the woman he was sleeping with.” Her voice was strangely clear, all the things she’d been avoiding saying came out like a certain kind of vomit from a certain movie that she still had the urge to watch now and again. “I left him and he’s the one that’s happy--he’s the one getting everything I ever wanted...and everyone,” Her tears started to dry as her voice gained momentum. She looked at Henri and then Gawain on the other side. “Everyone has families and all this life and I...” She blushed, suddenly feeling self conscious about her confession (she blamed her ex’s presence). “All I’ve got is ten years worth of regret and wasted time.” Her free hand balled up some of the material of her dress into a fist.

Twyla started giggling like mad when the blanket landed on it’s target...or had she been giggling before that in anticipation? She wasn’t totally sure, and it’s an unimportant detail anyway--moving on. After Gawain almost fell off the tree house (for a second the blond had been in a panic, but he’d saved himself so no harm no foul) he seemed to think that he needed to get even...and he did.
First there was pulling and then there was tripping of camouflaged girls and then there was tickling. At first in response to the tickling there was more giggling and then it turned into shrieks. “Noooo! Stop it!” Twyla panted. “I’m...r...r..really” Giggles. “Ticklish! St..stop it!” Soon the girl was wildly struggling against the boy who could probably barely make out her form in the darkness--lucky for him you don’t have to see something to feel where it is.
“This tickle-torture is too much for me! Alas, I am slain.” Twyla managed to get out in an overly dramatic voice. And then suddenly the blond stopped moving, hoping that playing dead would work. When she stopped moving, her powers dropped, revealing a disheveled and very red in the face girl with her eyes shut and mouth twitching like crazy as she tried not to laugh.

Twyla realized she’d recognized the name as soon as her friend gave her some background information. She shivered at the thought of him being around that summer but she was unprepared for the full and most recent story. The blond felt the other girl’s arm tense up when she was recalling the memories. Obviously this was a tough subject, Twyla understood why, but that was why she believed that Emerald needed to share these things with her friends--that’s what they were there for, to listen.
Brown eyes grew a touch wider when Em mentioned that he’d found her when she was visiting her parents. They grew even larger when the wolf girl gave some of the more gruesome details of her story. Twyla had to look away, she couldn’t bear to watch Emerald’s face--the body language and the emotion heavy in the air were enough for her to take without getting all squeamish. She blinked slowly, trying to get the images from her mind.
Finally, her friend’s story was finished.
The blond fought off the heavy shiver that was creeping up her neck. A deep breath was taken instead, she needed to be strong enough to comfort Em. But there was still one thing, one glaring detail, that the wolf girl left out...Who else had to deal with ‘him’?
Twyla let that thought simmer for a moment on the back burner. “Oh, Em...I...that’s....” A sigh. “My words can’t make it right--I’m just sorry that you’ve gone through such terrible things.”
A pause and a very quiet moment. Then, she just jumped right in with what was bothering her. “That..that wasn’t the full story--who...who else, erm, met with Bloodfang, this summer I mean?” Her stomach turned, imagining things.

It seemed like Gawain was as freaked out as Twyla was--or he was just instantly guilty because of her reaction. It was hard to tell which. He said a whole bunch of things rather quickly and plopped back onto a pile of blankets, covering his own face with something other than a mutation. For a moment there was silence and the blond used that time to slow her breathing way down and think things through.
She felt a bit ridiculous. Chock it up to hormones. The entire situation had gotten rather out of hand rather quickly. They seemed to get into these situations rather often. For some reason that was funny. Twyla smirked beneath her camouflage as a giddiness grew in the pit of her stomach.
The boy seemed to regain some of his composure after a moment as well because he sorta quietly called her (nick)name and then asked her if he could see her. Her powers were still on. It was a bit freeing to be basically invisible and that feeling combines with the night air and the caffeine from the coffee made Twyla a bit...what’s a good work for it? Random? Hyper? Crazy?
Her reply to the question was a grin that he couldn’t see unless he knew exactly where her face was and a difficult “No.” As quietly as she could on the boards, the girl crept to where her blanket lay, intent on picking it up and throwing it on Gawain, if he failed to notice or if he would let her...
Because it was either that or dance in circles on the roof. Dancing felt just a bit precarious, but it would still suffice for plan B.

They were quiet for a moment and then there was some throat clearing and Gawain said that the ‘show’ was over. This got a small giggle out of the bashful young woman. The boy took her hand and peered down at her face, she looked at him and let herself smile as the blush began to recede.
It came back a moment later with a vengeance.
...you’d see it anyway!? Twyla’s entire body flushed an intense red--not only because of what her boyfriend said, but because she’d instantly been thinking along the same lines before he admitted that it didn’t sound quite right. She was embarrassed about where her mind went and as soon as she stopped to think about it, the blush deepened into something that was all the colors of the dark woods behind her. The girl’s heart was pounding and her palms began to sweat a bit--she pulled her own from his to clutch both of her hands nervously in front of her. Quickly, she averted her eyes (not that he could probably see that, considering her powers and the fact that his were already averted) and looked down at the boards of the tree house, willing herself to sink into them.
In a quiet voice Twyla replied after a few seconds. “Um, not really, no--er, sex and...” She was going to say that you could interpret it in a way that didn’t involve things like sex at all since they hung out a decent amount after hours and all that. Instead she got things jumbled, said the s-e-x word, and wanted crawl into a hole and hibernate until she was old enough to handle these things in polite conversation.

“Um, I think you’re right.” They were both blushing at this point.Getting to see the shift was secretly something Twyla had wanted to do but she was still nervous and a bit embarrassed that it was actually going to happen in front of her. It all comes with the territory. She reminded herself as she sat in apprehension and looked intently at Maya. There was a few minutes of silence that Twyla almost broke with useless babble, and then it started. Or she at least assumed it had.
Brown eyes grew wide as Maya’s hair began to shorten as her face changed as her body changed--it was all happening at once and the girl wasn’t totally sure where to watch. It wasn’t scary, or gross looking, just very intense and very fascinating. Twyla tried to take in as much of the shift as possible while all she could think in her head was Nature is a powerful thing. It was nature after all that caused Maya/Gawain’s x gene to manifest the way it had. It didn’t look very fun, based on the gender shifter’s body language, but it was...powerful and beautiful in a way that if asked, Twyla was sure she wouldn't be able to put into words.
And this happened every night!? Wow. It was amazing to think that it had happened all these years without trouble--his/her body just changed genders back and forth without a hitch. Wow.
The blond almost didn’t notice that it was over and that all of Gawain’s features had settled where Maya’s had once been. How much time had passed, the young woman couldn’t tell. She probably would have kept staring, her mind reeling in wonder, had Gawain not let out a breath that startled her into averting her eyes. For some reason Twyla felt suddenly shy. “Whoa.” Was all she managed to gasp out as she looked down at her own always-the-same hands and a soft blush danced across her cheeks. “Whoa...”

There was a whole gambit of emotions that ran through the woman’s body in the next few minutes she had alone. At first, Twyla sat in the chair and stared down at her phone as she ground her teeth and shook a bit. She was so angry--it rocked through her. How could he do something like this to her? To her? After all the crap that she’d done for him for how long? Oh, seven years, no big deal, who cares about what she wanted so long as he had his fancy job and pompous car and his girls on the side--well, she’d found out about the girls when it was too late, but still. He was doing this to her? Really?
And then Twyla took a breath and realized she was being selfish, this was selfish anger and it wasn’t really justified--no matter how livid she was.
The problem with being angry was that it always made Twyla Ashby cry. She blinked slowly once, twice, three times. And then she was blinking rapidly to hold back the gobs of water that were threatening to fall from her eyes. Why didn’t she mean anything to him? It was obvious now that she didn’t--you didn’t get engaged to the bimbo less than a year after the break up, that wasn’t right. Kurt understood that, or at least he had before they ever started dating--he refused to ask her out for over a year after she first moved to California because he thought it would be uncool considering what she’d left behind, and here he was, getting married...
One tear flashed down her face and landed on her phone face. Twyla quickly wiped it off and then jumped when she heard someone enter the room. Looking up, it was Gawain. He told her what the kids had done with a smirk, then he caught the mood in her corner of the world because he asked her if everything was all right. She blinked away the tears still lingering in her lashes and hoped there was no mascara on her face. With a blush she started to stutter “Oh, I’m f..f..--” Then Henri walked in and looked uncomfortable and tried to make an escape. “N..n..no! Henri, it’s f..f..fine, it’s n..n..not what you think!” She was a blubbering idiot. This was really embarrassing. Way to go team.

Maya said she’d spare her girlfriend the torture of retelling her some of the gooey romantic stories about the stars. She also agreed that time was too fast. It was weird to think about--Twyla was almost done with all of her high school requirements and then it’d be off to her first semester of college somewhere and Life After. In fact, it was so weird it was almost scary how fast lives changed, how much older you got in a short span--stop thinking about it. She commanded herself. It was surprisingly easy to do, once she focused on other things, like the stars or the nice companionable silence that she and the girl next to her were sharing. This was a time for peace and enjoying the moment, not worrying about the future.
After a long while Maya spoke again and just as Twyla was going to make a remark about the state of the boards the brunette swore and seemed to tense up. “What is it?” As soon as her girlfriend sat up the blond bit her lip in confusion. Um...see her shift? Um...what? After the question was asked Twyla instantly blushed and sat up quickly. There was nothing in any guidebook, rule book, or good book that had anything to do with what the decent thing was in this sort of situation and Twyla wished for a moment that there was. It comes with the territory--get used to it.
Henri had seen a shift--that was the first time she’d met the Morris kid, but beyond that Twyla wasn’t sure very many people had seen it at all. This was kinda a big deal, right? Maybe? It seemed kinda private...but at the same time...Twyla was curious, very curious...and she felt like a creeper for being curious. Perhaps a diplomatic answer was the best here? “Um...” More lip biting. “Whatever you’re most comfortable with is cool with me...?” Her response turned into a question at the end, fail.

They were silent for a few very long moments. Twyla didn’t say anything, just let the wolf girl wade through her words and try to make sense of them on her own terms. And then there was no argument--nothing, just a change in Em’s facials and an admittance that the blond sitting next to her might have had a point.
Finally. It seemed like now something had sunk into Emerald’s brain that proved to her that she wasn’t alone and that Twyla and other people had her back. It’s what friends did. To the blond young woman it was obvious, but apparently the red head didn’t see things quite the same way. Still, Twyla was very glad for the progress her words seemed to have made--now she just had to see them in action.
Twyla watched with worry as Emerald tried to get herself up, it was obvious that in her condition it wasn’t so easy. How the hell did she even manage to get out here? The mutant wondered as she bit her lip and watched for a moment longer. Before the wolf girl could finish asking for help her friend had already moved to maneuver the other girl up by holding her midsection and, careful of the bandages, gently help her stand enough to walk so she was leaning on Twyla. “Easy, here we go.”
“Bloodfang?” The girl didn’t like the sound of that name. Before she got an answer Em blanched and basically admitted that it was something to be worried about--elaborated even, saying that someone had already been in the way of it because of her that summer. Twyla stopped their slow pace to the infirmary dead in it’s tracks. “Em, what are you talking about?” Her voice was low, concerned, and strong. A gnawing sense of dread clawed through her stomach. She didn’t like where this was going, not one bit.

Eventually they were both lying on the roof of the tree house and any nerves about falling off were soon forgotten. Twyla felt very small and very safe and very happy. This was a good night, a very good night.
Blink. Blink. While it was true that the crazy puppy couldn’t get up this high unassisted the blond wasn’t totally sure if a lack of puppy was the absolute best thing about the pair’s first official date. She contemplated whether or not to come back with something slightly insulted or joking when Maya caught herself and elaborated on her comment with a laugh. Twyla turned to her and blinked in an overly serious manner before breaking out into a grin herself. A raised eyebrow that was awkward with her head in the position it was. “Nice save.”
She looked at her girlfriend for another moment before turning her brown eyes back to the stars above them. “This reminds me of sleeping outside by the back barn with my sisters and Nathan...” The young woman spoke what suddenly occurred to her. “We used to do that all the time in the summer and we’d like goof off and run around but mostly we just talked. It’s weird I guess, what we used to talk about--mostly it was stuff my sisters heard my parents talking about, like stuff to be worried about.” Twyla was quiet for a moment, thinking. “The last time we did that was after my grandpa’s funeral, I think. Geeze, that was like ten years ago--I remember Miranda was a senior in high school...Holy crap how did we get so old?”
That probably wasn’t the happiest or most logical thing to mention at that point in time, Twyla realized. With a blush she apologized after a second: “Sorry, I was just thinking out loud.” A small chuckle to brush all of the melancholic feelings off.

A blanket? Half a hug? Stars?
It was easy not to look down when there was a reason to look up. Stars were a rarity in New York City with all the light and the pollution and all the craziness on the ground to pay attention to. Twyla leaned her head on Maya’s shoulder as she looked up at the smattering of lights in the sky. It definitely wasn’t as nice as back home, for example, but seeing stars anywhere was always a treat.
“Very, very nice...” Twyla murmured and was quiet for a few moments, just taking in the sight and enjoying the other girl’s company.
“You’ll have to come back and see the stars from my valley.” It was interesting how different things cans seem, the same things, in different places. Like the sky was the same and the stars were the same but they looked less bright depending on where you were and how close you were to a city.
“This is perfect.” The girl adjusted the blanket a bit and enjoyed the view.
