The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Leo paced his room for hours one Saturday morning before he decided something had to be done. Something had to be done, but he knew that no one here was going to go outside the law. That’s why he was in the Mansion. He needed the law to protect him. That’s also why it took so much psyching up.
There? Nobody was going to be on his side.
This was possibly the most dangerous thing he’d done so far. If he could convince them to listen first, it could be worth the risk. He left a note so at least his roomie would know where he went. Then? He took the bus.
Foot tapping the entire way, Leo rode all the way to those famous golden doors. Sanctuary. Mutant Sanctuary. It was where the scariest mutants hung out in their own kind of mutantopia doing scary mutant things. They didn’t quite submit to human law, but then… that is why he was here.
Leo stopped and took a selfie in front of the Sanctuary doors first. He’d be stupid not to since he never ever, ever planned to come here again.
Go time. Armed only with a messenger bag with an over-full manilla folder of printed mutant dossiers, Leo pushed his way through the shiny surface and into the lobby.
How many humans had ever set foot in there and lived?
Hopefully, after today, at least one.
“Excuse me,” he addressed the blonde behind the desk in what he hoped was a polite tone. “Is there someone I can talk to about mutants I think have been wrongfully incarcerated?”
Alex did not seem happy. Was it something Leo said? He locked the phone and put it away again.
"Look, that's exactly why I came. There were no human students. None. This school's supposed to be a safe place for mutants and I don't want to mess with that. I swear I asked if somebody else needed my place first, man. But, if we can't get along while supervised, when are mutants and humans ever gonna get along?" And the financial aid was for his parents who'd only just barely been convinced to dip into his college fund to afford boarding school.
Plus, a school that didn't give scholarships based on grades? On what premises were they handing out scholarships?
"I can't speak for all those guys on the internet, but if I had to guess most are just riding the wave. There's no fear because you're interacting with them from a safe distance." They might like him legitimately. He was a pretty decent guy from what Leo could tell. Sincere and all that too. But the internet wasn't always so discerning with who they chose to idolize. They also liked keyboard cat and, really, what'd he ever do to earn it?
Jiri made a squeak about Leo's mom and then slapped his own hand over his mouth. Somewhere along the way they'd stopped walking and now the three stood in the shadow behind the Mansion. It felt sort of like they should be planning a secret revolution. Or at least plotting something.
"You okay, man?" He didn't want to touch him in case that was insulting somehow, but Jiri sorta looked like he was about to fall over... or throw up.
"I dunno. Forever if you're in range, I guess. I've seen big hulking muscly red mutants go all soft and pink around people like her." There was a YouTube. The quality was crap since it was a security camera from a gas station in the wrong part of town. Leo pulled out his phone and went to find it. It was through the WTF subforum if he remembered right. That's where they hashed through all the wild theories.
"She's an Adapted human. Which means she's not even a mutant either so I don't even get where she's all 'you can't apply for financial aid' and 'we don't give scholarships based on grades.'" Leo did a pretty fair impression of the Amazon, if he did say so himself. Even though he'd gotten those rejections in letter form with Ms. Taylor's signature at the bottom rather than from her lips.
That was totally how she would have said it.
There! Leo turned his phone around and showed them one of the red guys shrinking down during a drop down, drag out slug fest with a cop of some kind. Of course the camera cut out as someone else came zipping into frame, but that was one of the best examples around of Adapted behavior.
Leo was more than happy to offer this olive branch of information and potential mutual dislike. He wasn't sure why they were stunned exactly. Did he make them that uncomfortable?
"I swear I'm not here for pictures or whatever." Did he need to justify himself here too? Why was it so flippin' weird?
"Creepy humans. Yeah. Haha." Something sort of mumble-y and affirmative came out like that. Have you ever seen a tan guy go pale? The more Jiri talked, the more Leo was sure he was going to wake up in a gutter somewhere missing a kidney.
Human dress up? He'd heard stories about Aura, but... were there people like that at the Mansion?
Gulp.
"Hopefully that's a harmless hobby." It had been fun once. Take pictures and keep track of the mutants you saw doing really cool mutant things. Sort of like celebrity spotting. He hadn't meant any harm. He certainly hadn't meant for it to get popular and spawn 50 pretentious camera-touting hobbist meetings.
>> "I'm having a hard time getting a read on Ms. Taylor. It's like she's all..."
Finally! Something Leo could latch onto. "No. Totally." The hand motions really said more than words here. "I got that vibe too. D'ja know she shuts down mutant powers?" Wait. How'd he hear about his financials getting denied?
> "Just out of curiosity, what's your mutation? If you don't mind."
Was he outed so soon? Leo was just thinking that Alex seemed so mature about the whole authority thing. He had a great perspective, considering... you know.
"Ehm." Leo tried hard not to quick draw his phone and google up an excuse. "I... uhm..." Fart! He was scrambling for something that wasn't a lie and didn't make his sound like a mutant, but also didn't make him sound super lame. Either he was remarkably unoriginal or it was an impossible conundrum to solve in the few seconds he was given.
Leo just wanted to hang out with the cool kids for a little while. Was that so wrong?
"You know that crazy human kid who applied here?" Leo sighed. "You're looking at 'im."
And Jiri? "She gave you candy, didn't she?" That was how he'd heard. Now that he knew what to sniff for, he could smell it on him. Coffee candies.
I've actually been thinking that Leo has been keeping tabs through the media and public records of mutants who he (and his forum Audobon X) feel are wrongly incarcerated. I would love to have him drop by the Sanctuary and pass off this list and perhaps engender some good will toward humans? Not all of us are dumb ohgodpleasedon'tkillme.
Shiiiit he was f*&@ing this up and he knew it as soon as Alex's ears turned red. Jiri was like a well trained bulldog where his roomie was concerned. "Erm. Sorry." Did not cover it, but hopefully it was a start. He'd just thought... well. Alex was a Celebrity. He just hadn't put that in context about why until Jiri gave him the look.
"Yeah. Just this week, actually." And please don't make my life a living hell because I already doofed up. Wait. Jiri wasn't a psychic, was he? He looked... mostly normal. Except for the ankle monitor, the three of them could have been wandering around at his old school, actually.
Except. Yeah. No photographers at his old school. Not without candy vans and criminal records anyway.
"What?" There was maybe a bit more heat in Leo's voice than was appropriate. The bird sanctuary was off limits. "Those dill weeds need to back off. This is supposed to be a safe place." He needed to adjust the photo credit scale again to discourage taking pics through the bars. And maybe tip them off that there was security that might maim them. Yeah. Leo itched to grab his cell phone and mess with it now. It was really good to have someone trustworthy on the inside.
Leo sighed as they trudged through some tall grass behind a mostly brick wall of the Mansion. "Yeah. Ms. Taylor doesn't like me and I've kinda been avoiding the X's whenever I see them." He kinda thought they'd be nicer in person. "Off to a great start."
Whoa. He just came right out and said it. Jiri probably assumed Leo was a mutant, to be this frank with him.
"No. Really. S'cool, man." He tried to sound not affected, which was hard considering the way it made his voice all nasal. "It's not broken or anything. I'd just feel dumb going to see somebody." He was assuming a broken nose would hurt more, anyway. Somehow that was enough for Jiri to let him go. Had he been in trouble there for a while?
"I'm Leo." He sniffed and tested whether he could let his nose go. So far so good. "And everybody knows Alex. Sorry, man. You're a psuedo celebrity after both the YouTubes and your AMA." And, to be fair, he was listening.
Crap. That reminded him. Leo pulled out his phone and with practiced fingers, did the correct unlock motion with one hand. His screen woke right back up to the Audobon X forums where Leo made the fastest and most plausible excuse for his previous misspost.
ETA: cat.
That taken care of, Leo re-locked his screen and stuffed the phone back in his pocket.
"Soccer's mostly just an excuse to run around anyway." And now that it was settling in that he was going to get to kick a ball around with some mutants, Leo was anxious to get started. "You'll get the hang of it no problem. Heck, you're halfway there already just by walking around on your two feet. There's a reason it's the most played game in the world." Accessibility, they name is soccer.
Was he alright? "Yeah. Yeah, man. Totally cool." He pinched his nose with one hand and stuffed his phone back in his pocket before he posted yet another reply to his own post that read 'ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppdsms349042kmdf x' Too many more of those and SirSpiesALot would use it as an excuse to SWAT the Mansion. He was dying to hack into one of the cop's responsibility cameras when they were dealing with mutants. Yeah. No. He had to get somewhere and clear that one up.
> "You were totally listening, weren't you?"
Leo focused on the guy who, at best guess, he pegged as InvasionOfTheBS. Green eyes? In that face? Obvious mutant give away.
"Uh. Guilty." He whispered back to follow Invasion's lead. Yes. Honesty with the mutants, one of which had gotten to the Mansion via stabbing another.
So then Invasion made a loud excuse and then the three of them were going to play soccer instead. Leo kept his non-commandeered arm latched to his nose. He could smell the blood, probably because it was his nose, but he wasn't about to protest.
"There's a utility closet by the basketball hoop." There. That was helpful, right? "I haven't checked it out yet. Still settling in."
You know that part of your brain that recognizes your name? Leo liked to imagine his was extra mutant good.
He wasn’t sure what had drawn him into the conversation happening behind the door. He’d heard something about a forum and his curiosity was piqued. They couldn’t be… surely not…
But it was.
Audobon X.
Leo pressed his ear to the door and prayed for mutant hearing to spontaneously be granted to his person. They were talking about that AMA that’d taken off a while ago. Oh snap! InvasionOfTheBS was behind this very door! Leo pressed himself tighter against the wood.
He knew Alex was here. That was a no-brainer. He probably knew Invasion was here too. It only made sense, Alex had pegged Invasion as his roommate. But now the Mansion staff knew too. Hmm. Didn’t sound entirely positive.
What!? Leo put his hand on his mouth to make sure none of this was getting out through his lips. FAN MAIL? Psh. He was an admin and even he didn’t get fan mail.
Psh. Probably poisoned cookies anyway.
And they settled on the idea to do more AMAs? Awesome! Leo popped his phone out of his pocket and started a new thread to quickly let the site know in a vague admin promise kind of way that there was more direct mutant contact headed their way in the future. Crazy. He thought he’d be able to get some stuff going while he was here, but this was even better. This InavsionOfTheBS guy, Leo needed to shake his hand.
He leaned in, ready to glean more information.
Huh? Were they being real quiet again? Someone made Alex cry some more? He leaned in closer.
THWACK
“Augh!” Surprise!
Leo grabbed nose and rocked back on his heels. “Augh. That stings!”
"Yes!" Fist pump! Air guitar solooooOh geez, she glanced back. Leo trotted to keep up.
Okay. Yeah. Kitchen. Cool. He would meet people, eh? It was time to engage those puppy dog eyes. She was running through it all real quickly, but as big as this place was it wasn't THAT big. He wasn't about to get lost, not when things were so clearly defined as "boys go here" and "girls go here."
He wanted to ask about the x-men, but he felt like she was baiting him. Nope. Not gonna fall for it, Amazon! "Yeah, who cooks? There's enough people here that's gotta be a job, right? KP duty too for the students?"
Proper tour? That sounded like he had one foot in the door now. Leo went back into high scrutiny mode. Every detail, no matter how small, was something he wanted to absorb. If this was to be his only time in the Mansion, he wanted to document it and let the guys on the board know what it was like and then they could all sigh and curse this Amazonian.
"That in the grass?" He pointed to what looked to be like some kind of turret, hidden under sod. "Part of the defense system?" Not that he was making metal notes or anything. He would never even think of breaking in to the mansion. Surprising a mutant was just so not high up on the to-do list of someone who wanted to survive.
"Cameras. Nice." He noticed some under the eaves of the roof now that he was looking. Atop the gate too. Hmm. Yeah. He didn't understand how anybody ever actually got in or out of here without permission.
"Infiltrated is an interesting choice of word." Like corporate espionage stuff? Someone needed to get in here and write all this down. Lifetime TV was being deprived. There was also pretty sweet novella potential.
Leo did not miss that Ms. T had said 'if.' IF he moved in. Sigh. Could she not do that to his hopes and dreams? He was really looking to hear when he moved in.
"Will I get to see any of the inside? I mean, the tulips and stuff are nice too." As were the overkill laser guns and crazy paranoid CCTV. Leo put a little De Valdenebro charm in his smile with the hope that would help.
Okay. So. She was clearly the wrong person to ask about the handshake thing. She A) was unhelpful and B) Not a mutant.
He forgot. Again.
Because you know. Mutant school and Amazonian height.
"I think the things I want to learn are best uh- learned through experience. Direct. Experience." You know. The LET ME GO TO SCHOOL HERE kind of experience.
"Okay then," Miss Unhelpful Smarty Pants, "what things do you think I need to know before I" potentially, eventually, "started here?" What now, bra? Now it was Leo testing Ms. T.
"What could go wrong? Really? Worst case scenario. Hit it."
"Being 'just a human' doesn't mean I'm assuming anybody will dislike me." Leo puffed out his chest. "Peeps like me just fine." Uh. Maybe not Amazonian Mansion Gatekeepers. Most people liked him, anyway. "I just mean... you know what I mean, you're just being difficult."
> "Why do I feel like those are not the most important questions you want to ask?"
"Is there some code or something? A way for mutants to know each other? It just seems like a tight knit community is all. There's gotta be secret handshakes or whatever." But seriously. She was putting him on the spot here. How was he supposed to just whip out all his questions all at once? Some were the kind that would get his ass kicked and should only be asked to the right people at the right time.
Leo cast a discerning eye over Ms. T. She was so not the right person to ask. "I know you're testing me. Of course I have billions of questions, but some questions you don't just ask. I know what tact is." He just... didn't choose to exercise it very often.
He sighed again. A safe haven, right? And because he was coming from an already safe place, that meant he was unwelcome here?
"Is there not enough room or something? I mean, because I'm just a human. You have to save space for people who maybe need it?" Because that was a legit concern. He could get behind that. Well, he would be really disappointed, but it was at least a thing.
"I don't wanna take someone's spot if this is the only home they might have." That'd be like kicking a puppy out of the pound because you thought the cage might look cool from the inside. Really not cool.
Augh. Not more talking. Leo let his body show the weight of the conversation. Dragging feet? Check. Slumping shoulders? Check. Rolling eyes? He got as far as Ms. Taylor's way tall face before he realized that this might be exactly what she was talking about. He stopped his sigh of exasperation before it even got started.
No. If he wanted this, he needed to be on his best behavior, a model student. He stopped moping and had to, once again, jog to catch up.
"Talk is cheap, Ms. Taylor." Or so the movies said. "What can I do to help you make the right choice here?"
A-hah! So ColdSteel was on the board. That was... kind of in charge? Hm. He'd have to do more research. He was pretty sure ColdSteel's alias was Sam Something anyway. The blonde evil chick always called him that in those creep-tastic cell phone videos taken the night of one of those giant mutant brawls.
> "I promised you you can ask your questions as well, about the school."
"Hmm?" Leo'd gotten carried away hypothesizing about how all the different mutants knew each other again, but... well, she was letting him ask... "Oh. Uhh. You mentioned that some people come and go? Is the Sister School like... a hotel too? Or is it strictly alums who come back?" Good schools made people proud enough to come back, though, he had an inkling that wasn't exactly it.
