The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Raucous laughter permeated the walls of the library and Janelle wondered just how freely the champagne was flowing this year. Her own glass sat on the floor by the chair, not even half gone and unlikely to get any emptier. Drinking socially was fun, drinking alone was worrisome.
Janelle’s phone vibrated and she unlocked it to read the response that Erik had sent.
As her eyes scanned the words Janelle’s brow furrowed in slight confusion before her eyes sprang open in shock. When Erik had said he had to work, Janelle had accepted the news with as much good will as possible...but now he was saying he’d see the tree in person? Eyes up? See you soon? The last she had heard he was planning to eat dinner at the shelter where he volunteered.
A plane engine sounded overhead and Janelle scrambled from her chair, stumbling slightly as her legs tangled in the blanket. She had slipped her heels off when she curled up in the chair, and they lay in their discarded little heap under the blanket as she ran for the front door.
Out she went, heedless of the cold, and made her way down the stairs just in time to see a figure descend from the sky[/].
He hadn’t…
Janelle had taken in stride that Erik was able to borrow cars from his employer and that he had well tailored suits for work, but this was on an entirely different level… what exactly did he do?
It was literally of no consequence though because...holy grand gestures Batman.
Making her way down to the gravel drive and finally realizing the folly of leaving her shoes behind, Janelle made her way to the place where Erik stood, heedless of the small crowd that had started to form at the spectacle of his arrival.
Shouldering her way through, Janelle heard Erik ask if he was at the right house.
By way of answer she kind of flung herself at him. If he was shocked by that kind of behavior he was simply going to have to deal with it...if he hadn’t wanted a grand reaction, he shouldn’t have jumped out of a freaking plane to surprise her for Christmas.
Christmas Eve. Despite the fact that she was a grown woman who had moved out on her own and was living in the big city there was something about the holiday that made Janelle feel like a kid again.
There wasn’t any snow and the weather was actually unseasonably warm for this time of year, but the large tree was up in the foyer of the house and it was decorated with all the big, fancy decorations that would be expected in a house of this size, owned by a family like Janelle’s.
Greenery and lights encircled the bannisters that bordered the large staircase that led upstairs and wreaths and mistletoe hung on doors and in doorways. It really was a sight to see.
So were all the people at the party Janelle’s parents hosted every year on this night. All of their friends were there and a lot of the kids that Janelle had known in high school. None of them had anywhere else to be, and apparently didn’t care if the drivers or caterers did either.
Janelle wasn’t at the party though. It simply hadn’t seemed like much fun this year, even as the old family friends had arrived and mooned over the decorations the same way they did every year.
The girls were...the same as they’d been in high school and most of them were on their second or third gap year, trying to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives. The guys were...too interested for Janelle’s taste and she’d already gotten tired of telling them that she had a boyfriend, especially when they didn’t seem to care. The socializing had gotten real old, real fast and she’d slipped away.
Instead, Janelle sat in the library, curled up in one of the large leather chairs with a blanket wrapped around her and a book in her lap. A smaller tree was in this room with twinkling and colorful lights. The ornaments on this tree were homemade or they were the kitschy kinds of things that a person would find at tourist shops in vacation spots. This was the tree that they had put together as a family. This was where the presents sat under the tree and where the Jennings had opened presents since Janelle could remember.
It was beautiful and Janelle decided that this was much better than a silly party. Even if she had gotten all dressed up.
Right now only one thing was missing.
Janelle took out her phone and snapped a picture of the tree, sending it to Erik with a simple message.
Janelle frowned slightly at Erik’s mention of work around the holidays. It was almost criminal to make someone work on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Charles Dickens has even written a book about it that had been made into a play multitudes of times.
”It’s a long trip there and back.” she said shaking her head slightly against his shoulder, ”I wouldn’t want you to go to all of that trouble. They won’t mind if you can’t make it.”
As for why people watched romcoms and what they had established, Janelle could only chuckle again and turn her head to plant a quick kiss on Erik’s cheek before laying her head back down on his shoulder.
Tori’s parents, it seemed, were bastions of modern economy. Online sales and vlogging could be incredibly lucrative, ”You’ll have to tell me the name of your Dad’s channel! Do you ever guest star?”
As Tori explained more, Janelle nodded her head, ”I don’t have any brothers or sisters either. My Mom and Dad tried to give me one, but it never worked out…” she said in commiseration. Sometimes it had been hard to be an only child, but Janelle has had lots of friends. As a teen it hadn’t been so bad, she’d had lots of activities to keep her busy, after all.
It seemed that Tori had also heard of Xavier’s but not as a school, since that was primarily what the Mansion was known for, Janelle’s curiosity was peaked, ”What do you know it from?” she asked.
Tori’s next question made Janelle’s heart go out to the girl even more, ”School is pretty great sometimes, especially if you like to learn. It can get boring sometimes though, and kids can be mean...sports are fun to watch though...and clubs...why are you homeschooled? ”
Janelle took another sip of her drink and realized it was empty and frowned, ”I’m going to need one of these for the road...want a refill?”
Janelle grinned at Erik’s question. Thanksgiving had gone better than she could have possibly hoped and her parents had already extended an invitation to Erik for Christmas. Things had been busy though, and Janelle had known that Erik had been a bit...overwhelmed by everything at Thanksgiving so she hadn’t passed it along yet.
”They’d love it if you joined us! I usually stay a couple of days though, so we’d have to travel separately if you have to get back for work...otherwise there is plenty of room.”
As they settled in and Erik kissed the top of her head, Janelle laughed softly and snuggled in more, tilting her head so she could look up better and grin, ” That’s the other reason that people watch silly romcoms...so they don’t actually have to pay attention.”
The story that Tori spin wasn’t completely nonsensical. Loads of people made their fortunes without ever leaving their houses. It was the beauty of a technological age and a bit of a boon in a world where civil unrest wasn’t as unheard of as it had been in the past.
Still…”What do they do from home? she asked quickly followed by, ”I’m still in college, so I’m always curious about what people decide to do when they’re out in the world…” by way of explanation for the somewhat probing question.
As to where she used to live, ”I used to live at Xavier’s School. I went to my last couple years of high school there and they have rooms where you can stay. I’ve been graduated a few years now though and I wanted more space…” ...and to not have to drag her boyfriend through gaggles of teenagers (or share couch space with them) every time they hung out.
As for living alone…”It’s definitely nice to have my own space...but I wonder sometimes if I shouldn’t have gotten a bigger place with a roommate or two instead of a one-bedroom. I get kind of lonely sometimes...but there’s a great view of Central Park.
It was Janelle’s favorite thing about her place and the main reason she’d chosen that particular apartment.
Would it be time together if it was working together? Janelle shrugged her shoulders, ” Volunteering would definitely count. We would be together, and doing something good. Once the holidays are over I won’t see my parents for quite a while. They’re doing a tour in Europe and won’t be back for ages.”
Hmmm a dedicated date night? Janelle mulled the idea for a moment, nodding as she considered the pros and cons. As long as they didn’t get too set on a single night of time together during the week, it seemed like a nice way to make sure they saw each other, no matter what.
”Now that you put it that way, a ‘date night kind of thing sounds nice.“ she said, Erik leaned against her more and Janelle smiled, slipping her arm under his so she could hold his hand and more easily lean her head on his shoulder.
”Good thing these movies aren’t too hard to follow, we’ve gone and missed the beginning. Want me to back it up?”
Janelle presented a problem and Erik proposed a solution. This was something she was learning about her boyfriend. Erik saw things in quite simple terms most of the time and he never came across a problem he didn’t think he could solve.
Analytical could be a very good thing sometimes. Applied to dating...not necessarily so.
Still…
”Maybe you could come with me…” Janelle said by way of suggestion. ”Or maybe I could go with you sometime...to volunteer I mean.”
A schedule for time together seemed so...clinical, ”I don’t think I like the idea of a schedule...we should be more spontaneous! It makes things more fun...like today.”
The idea that she needed someone to watch over her should have been at least a little galling to Janelle, but it wasn’t. Erik’s whole job was to protect people and it made sense that he would apply his skills to her. Being offended by him simply caring that she was safe would have been petty in a way that Janelle couldn’t manage.
As to what they were doing...it was so easy to forget that English wasn’t Erik’s native language, the idea that he didn’t know a word for something seemed somewhat outrageous.
”I told you. We are hanging out.” Janelle said, turning back to regain her seat, this time close enough that her leg pressed against Erik’s. She assumed he would let her know if he minded.
”Something we have not done enough since we started dating. ”
It was true, work and school had seemed to be increasingly in the way as time passed, ”My class load isn’t so bad next semester, so hopefully things will get better.”
Janelle studied Erik’s face as he went through his various reactions to her apology, trying to decide if she had really misjudged or if he was just trying to make her feel better. Erik has never done anything like that before, so there was no reason to think he would now, so Janelle relaxed slightly eyebrows rising as he cursed himself for his poor...socialization skills.
Janelle couldn’t help it. She laughed. What a roller coaster of emotion this had evolved into.
Erik apologized and Janelle shook her head, sighing and running a hand through her hair ”I do know how to clean up after myself...but if I let her go then she would just have to work somewhere else and she has a gaggle of kids and grandkids. We honestly spend a lot of the time she's here chatting.”
As for the rest, ”And we are socializing huh...that sounds so formal for jammies and a movie.”
Now that the choice of movie was approved and the two of them were settled in to watch, Janelle tried to decide if Erik would mind if she snuggled up closer. It was a strange conundrum, but he had left that little bit of space between them.
Deciding to leave it up to him, Janelle turned her attention to the movie...until he spoke again.
Turning slightly wide eyes in Erik’s direction, Janelle reached out and set her coffee on the table and took to worrying her hands a bit, turning to face him more directly . ”I didn’t mean to rub it in your face…” she said softly. “It’s just what my parents said I should do and she doesn’t like me to put things away in the kitchen because she can’t find them…” Janelle didn’t mention that the woman did some light cooking as well...she didn’t like that Janelle ate out so much.
”I’m sorry…” she said, not entirely sure what she was apologizing for, but sure she needed to all the same.
Now it was Janelle’s turn to feel called out, and as they worked together to put the food away she tired to figure out how to explain the situation to Erik. Part of her felt like she shouldn’t need to explain, but something about the way he was reacting to everything had put her back on her heels a bit.
Erik also seemed a bit indifferent about staying and hanging out and Janelle found herself frowning a bit at the dichotomy of the morning. Why would Erik go to so much trouble to sneak in and make her breakfast only to get cagey about actually spending time together?
At least he decided that a movie would be good and Janelle snagged her coffee cup on the way to the couch. It was overstuffed, grey, and possessed a number of extremely fluffy pillows that were just firm enough not to swallow a person, but soft enough to be very comfortable.
Settling in, Janelle grabbed a remote from the table and set about pulling up one of the streaming services programmed into the TV. There were loads of romcoms this time of year, so she picked one and got it going.
”I hope you don’t mind romcoms. It feels a little early for action or drama, so I thought something silly might work.” she said, turning her coffee cup in her hands as she tried to parse out what she wanted to say.
”I’m guessing I never mentioned Matilda before. She’s really nice, and she’s been working around here for years.” It was terrible by way of explanation, but it was a start.
Janelle’s brow furrowed slightly at Erik’s response to her quip that a hug quota might be necessary. He seemed patently uncomfortable with the entire situation and that just wouldn’t do.
As for Matilda, ”Matilda keeps house for me a few days a week in the afternoons. She has a few other clients in the building and came very highly recommended.” Janelle said by way of explanation.
The plan was to pack up the food and Janelle nodded as Erin gave her directions on when it should be eaten. It would be lovely to simply grab something on her way to class that wasn’t from a shop.
”I’ve got some containers somewhere…” she said, reaching up and opening cabinets until she found what she was looking for. Stretching up on tip toes to grab the containers Janelle put them on the kitchen counter with a pleased smile.
Also good was the fact that Erik didn’t have to be anywhere. They’d had precious little time together between her class schedule and his work, so Janelle wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity.
”Maybe we can hang out for a while, watch a movie or something…finals don’t technically start until tomorrow and I’m already doing pretty well as far as studying goes...”
”Well...We will just have to change that.” Janelle said with a smile in Erik’s general direction. Janelle would have hated Erik feeling like she had called him out, but she wasn’t one to let something go simply because it was uncomfortable. ”I’m tempted to establish a hug quota.”
The idea was very tempting, but for now there was food.
Janelle ate quiche. Then she ate croissants. Then she ate some more quiche.
It was all super good, and apparently baking was easy. This was news to the redhead who glanced at the pile of dishes and cookware that Erik indicated and shrugged her shoulders.
”Matilda put it all away in the first place. If you just leave it there, she’ll put it back when she comes this afternoon.”
Matilda was great and Janelle didn’t know what she’d do without the motherly older woman who kept her apartment in tip top shape. It had never occurred to mention her to Erik, but she didn’t think to do it now either.
Smiling in his general direction again, Janelle nodded to the food, ”What are we going to do with all the leftovers?” she asked, curling her legs up into her chair and grabbing her coffee again.
”And are you planning to stick around for a while or do you have very important security things to do?”
Janelle had always known that Erik’s upbringing had been very different from her own. The stories that he had told and the things he had mentioned in casual conversation had made it obvious that they came from different worlds in more than one way.
In spite of all that, Janelle was still somewhat shocked at how Erik reacted when she gave him a hug.
They had kissed plenty and had been close a number of times, but was this the first time they had actually hugged? It must have been, so when his whole body tended, Janelle just held on until he relaxed and returned the hug.
Erik spoke and Janelle smiled, turning her head so she could look up at him, ”You haven’t done this much, have you?” she said softly before loosing her arms from around Erik’s waist.
”I’m sure they’re fine.” she said, in reference to the various breakfast delicacies, slowly pulling away and reclaiming her seat.
Picking up her fork and digging into the quiche, Janelle took a bite and mmmmm’d appreciatively. If the eggy pie was underdone, she couldn’t tell.
