IC: For a moment Jacen was left pondering why in the world the skies were parting as light shone down and a heavenly choir sung in the background. Quite obviously, Lori showing this much emotion and affection would have to be classified as a miracle. Wouldn't it? at the moment Jaceen really didn't care. He was just enjoying the feeling of her wonderful curvaceousness pressed against his back while her lips pressed against the area just behind his ear.
"A shirt... yeah..." Jacen breathed in reply as he did his best to maintain control and keep his libido in check through not only a kiss but also a nibble of the skin. "I better or we could end up not leaving the apartment today."
Reaching up Jacen carefully pulled himself free from her arms and then made his way to the bedroom. Not only did he need to get her a shirt but he needed to get dressed in something other than sweatpants. After all, sweatpants didn't do much to help hold a guy in check. Digging through his drawers Jacen did his best to find something that would fit Lori and wouldn't look like a night shirt. For a moment he toyed with the idea of just giving her one of his white undershirts but decided that when combined with her black bra that might come off a little to trampy. Finally, after much searching he found one of the few colored undershirts that he owned. Burgundy colored, the shirt fit quite tightly on him which meant that it would still be at least a little baggy on Lori.
Turning back around Jacen wasn't at all surprised to find that she had followed him into the bedroom and was standing there with a slightly coy expression on her face. "Here," Jacen said with a quick grin as he walked over and handed her the shirt, "that should work for you but now I need to get dressed."
***
Stepping out of the truck, Jacen looked at the small building that housed the jump school. It was right next to a small private airfield and Jacen had visited several times since coming out of the military. He had even gone through the process of making sure the paperwork was filed to prove that he was qualified as a jump instructor.
Clad in worn, comfortable looking khakis, white sneakers, white undershirt, and brown and teal striped shirt left untucked, Jace was dressed quite casually though without the redneck look that he somtiems assumed when wearing his denim jeans.
"I have to admit I can't wait to see what you look like in a jumpsuit." Jacen said with a quick grin at Lori before leading the way into the building. Sitting behind the counter was a forty-something woman with shoulder length brown hair. Even though she looked friendly there was also a firmness in her expression that made it clear she wasn't a person to be messed with.
"Hey Christine. You got any opening this morning?"
Glancing up from her paperwork the woman smiled quickly at the man that had become one of there decent customers. No where near as good as some of their best but at least he came often enough that they had learned his name.
"I think we have a couple opening. Solo or with a friend?"
"With a friend." Jacen replied with a smile as he stepped back beside Lori and looped an arm around her waist. He had been hit on by enough other women that he wanted it to be quite clear that he was there with only one woman, and that was the woman he would be staying with.
"That'll work." Christine replied cheerfully as she directed her gaze toward Lori, "Would you rather go up on a tandem jump with this joke or do you want to use a static line?"
Out of the corner of his eye Jacen watched as Lori suddenly began to wiggle until she was free of her blankets and then popped to her feet. There was the slightest twitch of a smile on his lips but he didn't bother to say anything, instead letting Lori make her choices about how the morning should go. "Morning." Jacen replied with a smile, his voice relatively clear due to the coffee he had already drunk. With no more words to exchange Lori made her way over to grab some coffee before heading off to the bedroom. Soon he could hear the rustling of sheets followed by the rustling of plastic bags and clothes.
"Sounds like she's getting dressed." Jacen thought as he picked up his coffee cup and took another sip while turning the sports page. He hadn't read a single word on the first page so he didn't expect to be actually reading words on the second page until his searching eyes found one particular headline.
"Ah, hell!" Jacen cursed to himself, "The Knicks lost again!" Momentarily distracted he delved into the article a little more completely, reading how a team that from the beginning of the season had been expected to lose was now play-off bound after their 111 to 104 win over the New York Knicks. Where were the Knicks bound? They would be staying at home, licking their wounds, and trying to plan for the following season while the play-offs took place.
"What's up?" Lori's voice broke in out of nowhere. Jacen had been so engrossed in the article about his favorite basketball team that he had missed hearing his... friend come back into the room.
"The Knicks lost 111 to 104 and now they're out of the play-offs." Jacen said in slight annoyance before lifting his gaze up to where Lori was standing, "Did you sleep we..." His voice died in his throat as he took in the woman standing there.
Jacen didn't know exactly what it was but there was just... something that was so amazing about a woman louncing around in jeans and a bra. Maybe it as the amount of skin being shown while still being relatively covered. Maybe it was the swells of a womanly figure that in one area were mostly revealed while in another were mostly hidden. He really didn't know and to be quite honest he really didn't care.
Letting out a low whistle the man's eyes lit up slightly in admiration. "Lady... you're looking really good this morning." Leaning back in his chair Jacen lifted his mug and took another sip of coffee, his eyes never leaving the beautiful blond. "So... you still interested in trying sky diving? I can promise you it's an experience you won't soon forget."
Approximately fifteen minutes after starting the coffee Jacen was able to pour himself his first large mug of the steaming liquid. Breathing in an aroma Jacen lifted the mug to his lips and took a long sip before turning to glance back over at the couch and see whether Lori was stirring. It was only the matter of a moment to determine that the answer to that question was a big negative.
Walking back into his room, Jacen returned moments later with his coffee mug in one hand, a set of keys in the other, and a pair of sneakers on his feet with the laces just tucked into the shoe instead of tied. Opening the door he stepped out into the hall and then began to walk down toward the mail boxes and paper bins.
"There ain't nothing can compare to the aroma in the air, that comes from those Columbian coffee beans!" Jacen sang softly and slightly off key. It was kind of a strange song but "The Coffee Song" was one of his favorite ways to start off a day, especially when it was a day off. "You've got your Starbucks, Foldgers too! So many flavors, from which to choose! You've got drive through espresso if you're, running late! You can buy it by the pound and it still tastes great."
Jacen's singing trailed off to a simple humming of the tune as he took yet another sip of coffee and then grabbed his morning paper out of its slot. Turning around he unlocked his box and pulled out the previous days mail. After re-locking the box he made his way back down the hallway, continuing to hum to himself as he did.
Slipping back into the apartment as quietly as possible Jacen walked over and set the newspaper on the dining room table. Wandering back into the bedroom Jacen took a seat on the edge of the bed and flipped on the bedside lamp as he began to sort through his mail. "Electric bill... water bill... junk... you may have won... hospital bill." Jacen muttered as he took yet another sip of coffee and then place his mug down on the table. Opening the bills one at a time he scanned over the information, checking that everything seemed in order before laying the envelopes back down on the table.
Opening the hospital bill, Jacen gave it a cursory inspection before pulling out the second page for his inspection. Apparently this was information about his physical and blood work. Blood pressure and heart rate had been good for someone that had been injured. Blood work showed that his alcohol content had been almost to the legal limit but not quite over. His electrolytes were down a tad but that could have been explained by the alcohol. X-Gene was negative. Blood sugar was good. Suddenly he froze and ever so slowly Jacen's eyes moved back to that one line he had gone over so quickly. "X-Gene: Negative"
"What the hell?" Jacen murmured softly before suddenly tossing the papers and envelope into the drawer on his night stand and quickly rising back to his feet. Grabbing his mug Jacen walked quickly back into the main room and took a seat at the table. Busying himself so that it looked like he was reading the sports section Jacen's mind was actually a million miles away as he tried to understand what he had just read.
Once Lori had let go of him Jacen made his way around to the other side of the bed and after pulling off his shirt and pants slid between the sheets in just his boxers. There was no good night kiss or special embrace shared between lovers just a quietly murmured, "Good night.", and then he drifted off to sleep.
*** It was a beautiful day at the beach and the sun was shining down brightly. Jacen was stretched out on a beach chair wearing a pair of sunglasses and a pair os swim trunks that were tie-dyed in blue, green, and aqua. Glancing over at the chair next to him he saw Lori, stretched out in an extremely skimpy gold and burgundy striped bikini. She to wore sunglasses and her skin was nicely bronzed from the intense rays of the sun.
Turning his face back toward the sun Jacen allowed his eyes to close as he just enjoyed the warmth. Yes, this was bliss. A hot beach with an even hotter girl beside you. Life was good.
For what seemed like hours Jacen enjoyed the warmth and then the sun began to go down and the air began to cool. All to quickly it was sunset and the air was actually taking on an icy feel. Opening his eyes, Jacen's mouth droped open in shock as he stared out across the glassy surface of an icy pond. Where was the sun? Where was the beach? Where was Lori?!
***
Jacen's eyes snapped open though his body didn't move. He could feel the matress and pillow conforming to his body and through the dim morning light he could make out the familiar surroundings of his room. But if the dream was over why was he still cold?
Sitting up, Jacen actually had to start chuckling as he looked at his empty bed. Not only was his sleeping partner gone but so was the sheet and comforter that had covered him during the night. "No wonder I was cold." He laughed to himself as he got up and made his way over to the bathroom. A few minutes later he walked out and went about pulling back on his sweatpants and t-shirt before wandering out to the kitchen.
There she was, curled up on the couch without a care on the world. Jacen had been hoping she was still around but a part of him had been wondering whether she had slipped out and left once again. Thankfuly she hadn't so while she slept he could see about starting up the morning coffee.
Nope, Lori deffinately didn't like being picked up and carried but at least she didn't fight it. There was a brief struggle and kick though it seemed to be rather half-hearted. Finally she settled down, one hang firmly gripping the front of his shirt.
"I'm not going to drop you or throw you Lori." Jacen said quietly as he walked over to the bed and then carefully laid her on it. Crouching over here he just looked into her eyes as he waited for her to release his shirt.
"I thought you said you were gonna take me up on my offer of honor." He said with a slight chuckle and smile at the beautiful blond, "I think we both need our rest."
Lori was a very confusing woman but Jacen was finding more and more that he liked it. Instead of going along with the same old thing that almost every women liked and enjoyed, she was her own person. An individual that wasn't afraid to break the mold and walk to the beat of her own drum. But beneath that there was still a sensitive woman that wanted attention. She was a mixture of things that made her special and that was what he liked about her so much.
"There are time when you're to suspicious Lori." Jacen said with a slight grin, "Besides, who said I wasn't getting anything out of this?"
If he had been looking at any other part of Lori's body it would have been quick and easy to assume that he was just looking for sexual favors but because he continued to concentrate on massaging the young woman's feet any idea of payment was much more abstract. What did he want from this? What was he looking to get from his relationship with Lori?
"Well I guess it just depends on how adventurous you feel for tomorrow." Jacen replied to Lori, ignoring her comment about spoiling her. If he wanted to spoil this woman then that's exactly what he was going to do. "Since you haven't spent much time on airplanes we could go up for sky diving. I've got enough jumps that we could actually jump together as partner or we could jump with a zip-line that pulls our shoot as soon as we get out of the plane. Then maybe after that we can see if there are any interesting movies playing and if so we can kill a few hours in the theater. Then after a day out and about we could grab some take-out for dinner and then you can either spend the night or head off to wherever else you need to go."
Jacen was quite pleased with the ideas that he had come up with so quickly. They were good plans. Firm plans. Plans that could easily make sure that he got to spend the whole day with this pretty blond before having to return back to work. Glancing up at Lori's head, Jacen finally realized that she was beginning to fall asleep. Releasing her food he stood to feet and then walked over and in one smooth motion lifted Lori up into his arms.
"You'll be a lot more comfortable falling asleep in bed." Jacen said quietly as he cradled her in his arms and walked back into the bedroom. He knew that Lori didn't particularly like being carried but somehow he figured that as tired as she was she might not mind for the moment. Besides, even if she did mind it wasn't like she could really fight him off without forcing him to drop her. "We can always come to a final decision on our plans tomorrow morning."
She was just so darn cute when she was wiggling around from being tickled. Jacen actually found himself chuckling as he watched the blond woman bury her head in the pillow in order to try and contain the noise of her laughter. This was the side of Lori that he was sure she rarely revealed to everyone. A touch of helplessness and innocence combined together with her natural beauty to just show her off as she truly was. Not the image she tried to project at all times but just pure and unadultered Lori.
"I'm know that I'm lucky." Jacen said with a quiet laugh as he finally stopped the tickling and returned to just massaging the one foot he had held captive for several moments. "If I hadn't had an ability like the one I have, you probably wouldn't have even given me the time of day and we never would have had a chance to get to know each other."
It was an intimate moment that Jacen didn't fail to appreciate as he massaged her foot and watched the young woman began to calm down from his outright tickeling. Had she ever opened up to another person like this? Sure, she still had secrets but she was sharing things with him that he was willing to bet she'd never shared with another guy. Some of it had been accidents of course, like his stumbling across Lori's father, and some of it had been by choice but it still gave them a connection that he felt sure was more than she'd shared with anyone else before.
"Well, is there anything that you've wished or wanted to do that you couldn't because of your power? Any dreams that you have that had to be held at bay because you couldn't do it with your abilities?" Jacen asked after a few moments of silence as a thought suddenly occured to him. Obviously Lori had originally hooked up with him because he gave her the option of enjoying a shower. Was there something else that she might also be interested in that his abilities would allow them to now enjoy together?
The first quiver that ran through Lori's foot provided him with some very interesting information. She was ticklish! This beautiful woman that tried to come off as being so tough and strong had a soft spot! Now of course the question was, exactly how many people knew about this particular secret?
"We should do something huh." Jacen said rather lazily as he finished working on the one foot and then picked up her other one. While rubbing his thumbs and fingers over the muscles and tendons in her foot, Jacen did allow himself a few moments to play by tickling the ball and arch of her foot. "Do you have anything in particular in mind or are you just wanting to spend more time with little ol' me?"
This was somewhat shocking but Jacen liked the surprise. He never would have expected Lori to suggest they hang out even more this soon after their relationship had apparently changed, but he deffinately wasn't going to complain about it. Of course, there was still an unspoken question about exactly what their relationship was. Were they boyfriend and girlfriend? Were they um-friends that were just testing the waters? Were the friends with benefits and maybe just a few feelings? Defining something like this was not Jacen's strong suit but he planned on enjoying every moment of whatever this was.
For a moment Jacen was frozen as he watched Kealey stand up and begin to hurry away. "Stupid! That was really stupid Jacen!" He mentally cursed at himself as the spell was broken as he rose to his feet to follow her. At first his pace was a fast walk and then he increased to a jog as he tried to catch the rapidly moving blond. Tossing his unfinished pretzel in a trash bin as he went by, Jacen sped up even more to where he was just entering a running speed.
"Kealey! Wait! Let me explain!" Jacen called out after her as he dodged through the pedestrians, trying to catch up to her. It was amazing just how quick the young woman was when she obviously wasn't dressed for running.
"Let her be!" A gruff voice sounded as a strong grip latched onto his arm and brought him to a sudden stop, "If the young lady wants you to leave her alone then I suggest you do as she wants."
Turning, Jacen found himself face to face with a burly man that reminded him very much of the old time sailors you would read about in books. Normally, Jacen would have been applauding the man's wisdom at keeping a couple from possibly coming to blows but at the moment all he really wanted to do was punch his lights out.
"I kissed her and I needed to explain." Jacen said rather lamely as he turned away, quickly scanning the crowd as he tried to locate the blond young woman once again.
"Let her be." The man said again as his voice turned just a little dangerous.
"Fine." Jacen said quietly as he finally realized that in a crowd like this Kealey could easily dissapear, "I'll let her be."
Ever since walking into the living room, Jacen had been watching Lori out of the corner of his eye. He hadn't really expected her to follow him into the living since he still had trouble remembering that she never wanted privacy while she was still damp. It was amazing that even a baggy old t-shirt could hide her beauty. "If you'd rather have water I think we can arrange that." Jacen said with a grin as he turned and slowly made his way to the kitchen. If she wanted to train close behind to say in his aura then he was going to make sure she had an easy time doing just that.
Once he was in the kitchen Jacen's motions were quick as he made short work of this particular mission. In what seemed like record time he had two glasses with several ice cubes and cold water in each of them. Walking back into the living room he offered her one of the glasses before walking over to take a seat at the end of the couch where her feet were currently residing. After taking a seat at the couch and enjoying a moment of just sipping at his water, Jacen reach oved and set the glass down on his coffee table then reached over and claimed one of Lori's tiny feet in his hands. Gripping it gently but firmly Jacen began to kneed the muscles and tendons in her foot, working on massaging away any aches or pains that might remain from their earlier jog.
"No work tomorrow. When running normal patrols I get a two day on and one day off schedule. Since we're actually working more hours out of the day and not just doing classes, paperwork, or the training sessions that take up so much time over in S.W.A.T." Jacen replied with a smile, his eyes drifting up to the blond's face before dropping back to the foot he was currently working on, "What about you? Any big plans for yourself tomorrow?"
IC: The trip back to Jacen's apartment was traveled in a comfortable silence as weariness began to cloud both of their minds. In what seemed like a short period of time the truck pulled into the apropriate parking space at Jacen's apartment building. Anyone watching the two walk into the house they probably would have assumed the pair was drunk. They were stumbling ever so slightly as they walked inside and their shoes were held in their hands instead of on their feet where footwear belonged.
Once inside the apartment, Jacen & Lori wasted little time. Soon the master bedroom floor was littered with clothing and the steam was coming out from the bathroom. The hot water was relaxing and as much as Jacen may have wanted to instigate something other than just showering, his offering of being honorable still stood.
After they both felt clean up, Jacen gave Lori a towel to wrap up in while he went and found something clean for her to wear. After pulling on boxers and a pair of sweat pants he snagged an extra large dark blue shirt with the words, "I'm so excited to be here." and gave that to Lori for something to wear.
"Care for a night cap?" Jacen called back into the bedroom as he walked into the living room and over to the table where he kept his liqour. He had left Lori alone with the choice of either remaining in her towel or donning the t-shirt and a part of him was quite interesting to see what her choice. He felt that it was probably safe to assume she'd pick the t-shirt but there was really no guarantee. "I've got brandy, scotch, whiskey, and even a few beers in the fridge."
When his legs finally stopped shaking and he stopped feeling like he was breathing like an old man, Jacen made his way back over to the truck. His feet really, really hurt and that meant he needed to get out of these cowboy boots as quickly as possible. While standing outside the truck Jacen jerked off the boots and then opened the door to climb inside. Setting them offending footwear on the floor behind his seat, Jacen buckled his belt and then started the engine, sock clad appendages pressing against the appropriate pedals.
"You can keep up with most of us." Jacen admittted as he continued to try and slow his heart rate back down to an acceptable speed, "But I bet if we both show up ready to run I can clean your clock." Rangers were some of the finest physical specimens in the military and it was a matter of pride to prove that he was still just that good. Sure, maybe he'd been out of the military for a couple of years, but his time at S.W.A.T. hadn't let him go soft. Nope. He was still just as touch as ever.
"Maybe a few extra jogs would be in order though." Jacen admitted to himself though he wouldn't share that kind of information out loud, "Just to be on the safe side."
As Jacen drove it suddenly occured to him that he didn't know exactly where to go. Without even thinking about it he had begun to drive back to his apartment but then was no reason to think that Lori was going to be spending the night at his place.
"Care to come over to my place for a drink or do you need me to drop you off somewhere else?" Jacen asked, glancing over at his companion before returning his eyes to the road, "You're welcome to crash at my place if you need to. I'll even be on my best behavior. Scouts honor."
So Lori still wanted to attempt it with a car. Well, that was OK with Jacen but they would still have to find a way to set up some sort of ramp. He didn't think he particularly liked the idea of a vehicle barreling into someone's house or business because he had encouraged Lori to experiment with her power.
"You again!? Get outta here!" The approaching man yelled as the two of them began to run off.
Within just the first twenty yards Jacen was already impressed by the young woman's running style. Instead of taking off at the mad dash that burned through energy like there was no tomorrow, Lori was playing it smart and instead setting up a steady pace that would eat up the distance as they made their way across the bridge. That of course made Jacen wonder exactly where she had learned to run so well. Had she been in track during high school? There were lots of people that enjoyed running but few knew how to do it right. That took either an innate gift or training and there was no way to tell which category Lori fell into. At least not until they reached the truck and were able to use their lung capacity for talking once again instead of just running.
***
Jacen's legs were beginning to burn and it seemed like he couldn't get enough air in his lungs. Even running as often as he did for exercise, a jog over the Brooklyn Bridge was no laughing matter. Especially when you weren't wearing the right kind of clothes for running. Cowboy boots were not meant for running and neither were denim jeans. In fact running in cowboy boots was a good way to tempt a sprained ankle but Jacen stubbornly clung to it as he continued to push himself to keep pace with the blond chit of a girl that had challenged him. This was a matter of honor! A matter of pride! No self-respecting former Ranger could let himself be beat by some little blond, even if she was sexy as hell!
***
It was the final thirty yards and both runners were stubbornly pushing forward. The last minute burt of energy had come from both of them as they increased their speed and tried to pull away from the other. Lori's steps were deffinately falling quicker but Jacen's longer strides were helping to keep things even. Right as they neared the truck Lori seemed to move just a touch ahead as she reached out for the vehicle.
THUMP!
The sounds were so close that it would take an instant replay to tell the winner. Jacen stod, hand on the side of his truck as he breathed in deeply, trying to get in enough air. True Lori's body had been slightly ahead of his but with his longer reach it had been close... far to close to call.
"Nice... nice run." Jacen said as he dropped his hand and began to walk away from the truck, his muscles quivering ever so slightly as he began to go through the motions of a cool down. It was never a good idea to go straight from all out exertion to a complete stand still and now he was going to try and slow down his heart rate before ever getting in the car.
"Tie?" He asked, ignoring the ache that was growing in his very soar feet. Never again would he run in cowboy boots... never... again. In fact, this experience was good reason to get rid of all cowboy boots. Even his work boots would have been better for running than these unruly things!
"Rematch... sometime?" Jacen asked as he wiped the sweat off his face with the sleeve of his polo shirt, "Loser buys the winner a gift of some type?"
The first President of the United Stated is one of the most beloved figured in American History. A man known for his bravery and honesty, George Washington is the kind of man that most any parent wishes his son might become. But, would America as a whole still feel this way if they knew the startling truth about one of their greatest leaders?
While serving as a an Aide to British General Edward Braddock during the French & Indian War, Washington was involved in mysterious events that only increased his fame. The Battle of the Monongahela was a bloody failure where Braddock was killed while trying to retake the Ohio Country from French control. During the debacle Washingtin distinguished himself by taking over leadership of the men and remaining cool under fire. Though two horses were shot out from under him and four bullets pierced his coat, Washing escaped the battle without a single scratch.
On Christmas Day, December 25th, 1776 the Continental Army made its historic crossing of the Delaware River. In the face of what any military strategist would have said was certain defeat and with problems including two detachments of troops never making it across the river and many arriving far past their scheduled time, Washington's surprise attack was successful. Nearly a thousand surprised mercenary Hessian soldiers surrendered with no American fatalities.
What could have helped this simple man accomplish so many great things? Some would say that luck was on his side. Othere would say that divine providence inspired the man to achieve the impossible. However another school of thought is slowly growing. What if Washington were a mutant? What mutation could have allowed him to win and survive through such historic moments? There is only one answer that fits with both situations and that is the power of propability control. The ability to change the statistics of a situation so that the dice will more often land in your favor.
So as you examine this display we leave it to you to decide. Was George Washing a man touched by a higher power in order to further the progress of this nation or was he simply a mutant, born in the right place at the right time?
Lori's comment about on/off was worrisome but at least the view was pretty interesting. That and the fact that completely floating was probably one of the most comfortable positions that a person could ever be in. If only there were a way to float while sleeping. That most assuredly guarantee a person the best nights sleep of their life!
"Huh... wonder if we could package something like this and sell it as a bed. The one of a kind Floating 3000, or something like that." Jacen wondered to himself. Right then he heard something and with a quick scan of the park he could see a solitary figure coming toward them.
"Looks like we've got some company Lori." Jacen said, failing to notice that he had gone down a few inches while watching the intruder, "Maybe I should..."
Jacen knew the exact moment that Lori cut off the power. It was the instant change in the pit of his stomach that told him he was going from floating to falling. Reaching desperately Jacen reached out and snagged one of the metal pieces with his hand, grunting out slightly in pain as his arm jerked as he pivoted down to slam against the side of the sculpture. The force was enough to make his hand lose grip and he fell backward, twisting as best he could as he tried to avoid the blond woman that he knew was below him.
Bracing himself with his arms Jacen was able to cushion his fall at least a little but he still hit the ground pretty hard. For the most part he'd manage to avoid Lori, just barely clipping one of her shoulders with his arm as he went down. "Ok... we definitely need to work on the dismount." He muttered as he slowly climbed back up to his feet, shaking his head to clear away any cob webs that might have developed.
"Maybe next time we can work on the acceleration idea. A nice ramp, maybe something lighter like a moped instead of a car. I bet you can clear the island." Jacen offered, as the approaching figure began to shout a little more insistently, "But that should probably wait for another day. I bet I can beat you to the truck!"
