The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lee seemed to be settling in more comfortably and Tarin took that as a definitely good thing. It didn’t mean everything was okay, but it did mean that she was at least comfortable enough to relax here with him and that was something.
Tarin had pointed out that fancy isn’t always better and Lee agreed, but with a caveat. ”Oh yeah? What’s better when it’s fancy?” Tarin asked as the judging continued.
It appeared that their two favorites were going to be in the top half of contestants for this challenge and Tarin had glanced down for a moment just to look up when Lee commented that something looked good.
Good lord, how had he missed that? It looked like it was some kind of maple bacon bread. Somehow it looked fluffy and decadent all at the same time and it honestly kind of made Tarin’s mouth water a bit. Maple and bacon were such an excellent combination. The judges seemed to agree, “Well, at least they’re both near the top. That looked awesome though.”

Walking distance was always as good thing. It was wild how you could establish your norms, even in a place as condensed as New York City and end up avoiding places that were very close in a geographical sense.
”It’ll be an adventure!” he said. Sometimes it was just fun to walk around Manhattan and see what was there and what had changed. Old shops closed and new shops opened all the time and there was no end to the coffee shops, candy shops, and restaurants that seemed to pop up every day.
Lee did have a point in that having more pie was objectively better than having less pie. ”We did establish that for some things there’s no such thing as too much, didn’t we?” Tarin said slyly with a little grin. They had established that after all.
There was bread making to watch though and as Lee pointed out how fancy some of the breads looked as the judges made their rounds. ”Fancy isn’t always good.” Tarin said, focusing his attention a bit more on the show instead of the conversation at hand.
Lee’s favorite contestant had done very well. The bread was cooked through, no complaints about the proofing, and they’d said the flavors were “very solid”. High praise from the fairly stoic judges.
Tarin’s pick had fared a bit worse. There were problems with the proofing but the flavors had been good.
The fancy bread was lovely, but it was apparently very dense and all of the fruit that had been added had sunk to the bottom in a bit of a clump. ”Well that bodes well for our picks, doesn’t it?” Tarin said.

”Me either.” Tarin said when Lee said she couldn’t wait to go to the pastry shop. Maybe they could combine it with a run, like a little reward or something for a job well done. Maybe not though, maybe they could go on a weekend and make a day of it.
”Is it nearby? Maybe we can go on a weekend and do something fun after.” he said, voicing his previous thought.
The pie was a definite maybe and that was all well and good until Lee pointed out that they’d need to buy a store bought pie for when she messed this one up.
“No self-fulfilling prophecies please!” he said, “I think if we do that we are just going to end up with two lies to eat and then what will we do?”
The bakers were being judged now and Lee asked who he thought did well.
”Your lady had a good handle on things…so did the bohemian looking girl who is always trying to make everything vegan. What do you think?

Lee seemed amenable to the idea of trying out that pastry shop. It had apparently been a long time since Lee had been there and she was happy to go again.
”It’s a date then…” Tarin said, leaving the details for later. Neither of them generally had much of anywhere to be super early, so deciding to go would just depend on when they felt like going.
When Tarin pointed out that he was fine with a store bought pie, Lee actually pushed back against the idea a little bit. Apparently she actually wanted to try again. Lee said she’d been bored in the afternoons and they could maybe get the ingredients the following week depending how things went.
“Totally up to you.” Tarin said simply, but he was grinning when he said it.
Glancing back at the TV, Tarin noticed that the judging for the first challenge was about to start and the judges were about to start making their way around to the contestants.
”Time to see how they did.” Tarin said, nodding towards the TV.

Lee was glad that he’d liked the pie so much even if she didn’t think it had been as good as Tarin thought. That was fine, Tarin supposed, at least she was smiling. The rest would probably come with confidence. Lee was better at cooking than she thought she was, but sometimes Tarin had a feeling that she fell victim to self-fulfilled prophecies about disasters occurring when she tried to cook. Lee also had a tendency to only focus on the failures other than taking them in context with the successes. Today was not the day to bring any of this up though, so Tarin mused in silence as they watched the show.
Lee thought she knew of a place that had amazing strawberry danishes. Maybe it was one of those strange little differences, Tarin thought, on his side the shop had specialized in blueberry danishes, over here it was strawberry…
”Strawberry is good too…” he said, ”Maybe we’ll have to check this place out one of these mornings…” Though it sounded like in order to do that they’d have to get up and moving pretty early which was something that Tarin was not a particular fan of doing.
It was quiet then for a little bit as they watched the progress through the current challenge. Regular baking was hard enough, but bread required kneading and proofing, attention to the moisture content of any fillings that were going to be included, and a multitude of other things that Tarin knew he’d be a disaster trying to handle.
A few of the contestants seemed to be having trouble with the exact things that Tarin was thinking about and with how the competition had been going, one major mistake in one of the challenges might be enough to get a person sent home.
Lee spoke quietly all of a sudden, but loud enough that Tarin could hear and he looked down at her quizzically for a moment before shrugging lightly, ”If you want. I will never ever complain about more pie in my life. Could also just pick one up and eat it if you don’t want to cook it.” . It had been a while since they’d had any kind of pie.

Lee seemed to accept Tarin’s reasoning about the cooking and how some people seemed to just have an innate ability to know the ratios of ingredients and flavor combinations. What he’d said was true, after all, Lee was an excellent singer and she was also better at the guitar than most people Tarin had ever known.
Some people just had talents, things that they were predisposed to be good at. Tarin wasn’t one of those people, but he could recognize the skills in others easily enough.
But there was Lee’s almost pathological need to diminish her accomplishments.
Every time Tarin brought up that pie and how good it had been, Lee insisted on downplaying it and attempting to ensure that he knew just how not special it had been.
He rolled his eyes, but he made sure he did it while Lee was looking at the TV. With everything else today she didn’t need him being contrary, especially not when Lee seemed to be starting to calm again.
“Regardless, I loved it.” he said.
The contestants were knee-deep in the first challenge of the episode now and they had all been tasked with making something sweet and it jogged a bit of a memory.
“There was this one pastry shop on the other side. I never was able to find anything like it over here…they had the absolute best blueberry and cream turnovers.” Blueberry was a theme, and while there were lots of other excellent pastry shops on this side, none had ever really quite compared.

Tarin decided he wasn’t going to ask for more details here. Lee had used the taser before and it hadn’t been particularly helpful.
He wasn’t going to ask for more details on the second part either, Tarin decided. The other Tarin had wanted Lee to get a gun. The part Tarin hadn’t realized was that Kevin’s Father had intended for Lee to potentially use said gun on him.
Ugh. That brought up things that Tarin didn’t want to think about. Not even a little bit. It was all starting to seem so far away, so long ago. It didn’t matter that he’d told Lee not to hold back when she’d been in the shop with him that night. He hadn’t wanted her to hold back.
It didn’t matter.
The show was cozy and as they settled in to watch and talked about the competitors and who they favored to win things started to relax just a little bit.
Tarin had pointed out that Lee’s favorite didn’t seem to be the type to usually cook from a recipe and Tarin nodded, ”I think it’s the people who learned from other people. They learn to cook by feel and stuff like that.”
Looking over at Lee, Tarin smiled, ”It’s like when you play and sing. I could never…no matter how good my teacher is.” he said. It was almost the same thing.

Tarin shrugged when Lee pointed out that maybe the taser would finally be useful. ”I’d honestly rather it wasn’t useful at all.” Tarin said seriously. That was the ideal situation here, wasn’t it? That this was all a huge misunderstanding that could be put to rest? That they could alleviate Lee’s fears, if not her discomfort. Chances were she’d never be comfortable in unexpected encounters with adapteds and that was fine, if sad.
The second thing Lee said made Tarin frown over at her on the couch. Hopefully the other Tarin hadn’t wanted her to have a gun or something like that. Not after what had happened in Romania. Nobody could be that tone deaf. ”Do I even want to know?” he asked.
Lee leaned her head against Tarin’s shoulder and he leaned lightly against her as well as the show began. Unimpressed with his question about who she thought would win, Lee pointed out that she was awful at picking who was going to win on these things.
“Just because we’re bad at it doesn’t mean that it isn’t fun to try…” Tarin countered gently. ”Besides, it’s hard to tell.”
Ultimately Lee said she liked one of the older women and Tarin nodded, “I feel like she’s one of those people who doesn’t even use recipes normally. It’s like it’s a blessing and a curse for them on these kinds of shows. I like her too though.” It was something to talk about anyway…

Lee pointed out that the hoodie looked well worn and Tarin nodded and smiled a bit. ”It should look well worn, it’s old” he said. It had that softness that was only achieved when cotton had been washed a couple hundred times.
Lee was curled up on the couch now and Tarin snagged the remote as Lee pointed out that she needed to dig out the taser but that it could wait until later. Tarin hadn’t known that there was a taser in the apartment, but he nodded, “Definitely doesn’t hurt to have something just in case.” he said, thinking that if it made Lee feel better it was definitely a good idea.
The taser was a weapon, something she could use if she couldn’t use her powers and needed to be able to protect herself. Tarin knew that the plan was for him to be with Lee, but that couldn’t be the case all the time and they’d just come up with a plan to let Lee stay at the bar while he saw clients in the morning. Until things were figured out Tarin knew he’d feel better if Lee had something.
But for now, bread sounded good. ”You got it.” he said, already flipping through the apps and shows until he found the one they were looking for.
The cold open was charming and silly as usual and very quickly they were watching the first challenge.
”Who do you like to win this season?” he asked idly.

Lee didn’t seem to need anything at the moment so Tarin leaned back on the couch and sighed a bit. He was restless and wanted to know what the spirits were seeing, what they were finding out, if they’d been able to figure out anything from the time they’d been looking…which had been about 5 minutes by this point.
It was still far too soon to know anything at all.
Gratified to know that even in the most dire of circumstances he was able to make Lee blush, Tarin smiled and nodded, ”Yes.” he answered simply. Tarin was fully aware that he had been given an either/or question, but the fact of the matter was that both things were true.
”It’s one of my favorites, but I think it was already too warm for me to really wear it by the time I moved in here.” he added, then patted the couch next to him.
”If there’s nothing else you need or want to talk about right now,I think we had plans to watch some bread get made.” Tarin said

He hated asking to leave right now. Lee was clearly not comfortable at all, and being alone wouldn’t help things. Tarin wanted to get a look out as quickly as possible though. The spirits didn’t need to sleep, so they’d be able to watch from the time the streets were empty until people showed up. If folks were just there on their commute or as part of their daily routine they’d come and go. It was anyone else that Tarin was concerned with.
Finally, Lee agreed, but asked him to be quick. Tarin nodded.
“Quick as possible.” he said, “You’ll know it’s me when I come back, but I’ll still let myself in.”
That said, he pulled Lee forward and gave her a quick squeeze before heading back out the door with a short, ”Be right back.”
This time Tarin took the stairs, going down it was every bit as fast if not faster than waiting for the elevator and he didn’t want to waste any time.
Heading outside, Tarin didn’t head out onto the street. Instead he moved over to the side of the building and leaned as he took out his phone and started messing around with the internet. As much as him and Lee left the apartment together, surely whoever this was would recognize him too.
It only took a moment to bring down the mental walls that Tarin pretty much constantly kept up and then he was putting out a call for Tony and Larry. Out of all the spirits in New York, Tarin wondered how he’d ended up with guys named Tony and Larry?
Still, it only took a couple of minutes before they had made their way to where Tarin was standing.
I need a favor…Tarin said, quickly running through what had happened. Tony was as fond of Lee as a spirit was able to be of someone who was living, their sparring was the thing that kept Tony going. Larry just loved to be in the middle of things and gathering information. They were perfect for the job and soon enough Tarin was heading back to the apartment. The spirits had their instructions and he figured they’d follow them. Spirits loved having something to do. The only thing Tarin had to decide now was whether or not he was going to check in with them from the apartment or if he’d come back downstairs to do so.
Tarin was almost back to the apartment by the time he decided to put the barriers back up for now. With Tony and Larry close by, other spirits might pick up on the fact that he was close by and that would be awful.
Unlocking the door and heading back inside, Tarin shut the door and turned the deadbolt before going to find Lee who had changed and appeared to have grabbed one of his hoodies.
Tarin liked that a whole lot more than the situation should have warranted, but there’d have to be more on that later.
For now, Tarin made his way to the couch and sat down. ”They’ve got their instructions and I’ll find out what they find out later. What about you? Need anything?” he said, then nodded to the sweatshirt, ”Looks good on you.” How did she always seem to find the things he’d brought with him?

About twenty feet. Tarin couldn’t do the math in his head, but that gave them a relatively small area to keep an eye out when they were looking.
Surely something or someone would stand out when they were paying attention over the next couple of days. Surely they’d be able to figure out the source.
Lee was right though, if it was just someone on a similar schedule as her, or someone waiting for a bus or cab at the same time each day their presence wouldn’t be nearly so consistent.
They were inside now and Tarin had reassured Lee that they’d figure this out.
They would. They’d figure it out.
Lee asked Tarin a question then and he frowned slightly and shook his head, ”Not immediately anyway. I can’t feel the part of my power that works all the time. I’m sure if we’d stayed out there much longer I would have noticed though.” He hadn’t spent more than incidental time around an adapted, but as far as Tarin knew, the way he kept the spirits away was part of his powers. ”If I was linked up with a spirit I would definitely notice.” he added as an afterthought.
He still wanted to check outside and Tarin looked at Lee for a moment before he spoke, ”Would you be alright with me heading back down there real quick? I want to ask those guys we talked about to keep an eye out. See who isn’t leaving when they should. I don’t want them in here so I’d rather talk to them down on the street.”

Lee sighed and leaned against him and Tarin kept his arm tight around her. Surely by now they were out of the adapted’s field, but Lee was visibly shaken by the whole thing and Tarin just wanted to be able to make things better. That wasn’t going to happen until they figured out what was going on though, and Tarin’s question was the first step in making that happen.
The field was always in approximately the same place, sometimes closer to the building, but always in that same general area.
”How long does it last? I know it’s a lot to ask and think about…but do you know about how far you go before your siphoning comes back?”
As Tarin finished speaking, the elevator stopped and the doors opened. Moving out into the hallway with Lee, Tarin still held her close as they approached their door and he pulled his keys out of his pocket to unlock it and get the door open.
Soon enough they were inside and Tarin had the door shut and locked, turning so he was facing Lee more fully, Tarin put his hands on her shoulders, ”We’re going to figure this out, and soon.” he said. If Lee couldn’t be confident and comfortable, he was going to have to be enough for the two of them.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing was standing out to Tarin as he did everything he could to figure out where the adapted field was coming from. Nobody seemed to be out of the ordinary. Nobody seemed to be doing something they shouldn’t be doing. Nobody seemed to be giving Lee any extra attention as she and Tarin made their way towards the apartment.
That didn’t mean that there wasn’t something going on though. This many brushes with an adapted, no matter when Lee was leaving or getting home was far too much for coincidence. They’d been too far from the apartment for it to be a new resident too. Something was up. Lee was absolutely right and they were absolutely going to figure out what was going on.
Lee had let him pull her closer and as they made it to the door of the building, Tarin reached out with his other hand to open the door and ushered Lee into the lobby before him.
She was happy to be inside, and Tarin nodded, ”Elevator today.” he said, urging them in that direction. He’d been taking the elevator more and more often lately, at least in their building and Tarin was just as eager to get upstairs as Lee was and somehow the stairwell seemed like the wrong idea.
All the way across the lobby, the whole time they were waiting, and once the elevator had arrived and they were inside, Tarin never took his arm from around Lee. In fact, he held her closer. ”Now we’ve got a starting point to look.” he said as the elevator moved floor to floor. He wasn’t even nervous right now, just focused on figuring out what was going on.
”Is it always in that same spot?” he was going to take a closer look, that was for sure.

All of the anticipation that had been building since Lee had gotten the call from Michael seemed to release at once as Lee grabbed that guard.
As soon as that happened, everyone moved. The guy who had met up with them outside of Haven had followed right behind Lee and was doing whatever it was he did to one of the other guards.
The guy who had been in the car, Tarin hadn’t really paid enough attention to catch his name, was teleporting all over the place. A gun appeared out of thin air and fell to the ground and Tarin picked it up as gingerly as possible. There were few things that Tarin knew less about than guns, but leaving one laying in the parking lot in this scenario was not a good idea.
Holding the gun loose at his side, his fingers as far away from the trigger as they could get while still holding onto the gun, Tarin watched as most of the guards were very quickly subdued…in a manner that was probably not quite as gentle as Kealey had expected.
Lee noticed too and Tarin winced a bit for everyone who was over there that had not followed directions because Lee was absolutely letting them have it. Lee was also not remotely impressed with the weird little guy who was now playing at being a cheerleader. Tarin just looked at that spectacle for a moment before getting back to business.
For her part, Lee had two guards down at this point and it appeared that Tony was being particularly helpful. To that end, Tarin sent more energy down the bond, making sure to keep the ex-fighter corporeal and mentally reminding him of the rules of engagement. Honestly though, the guy was doing pretty well on his own.
Kealey was approaching the group now and Tarin followed a little bit behind, glancing over at the spirit he’d told to keep close. This spirit was invisible still, but Tarin could still see him. Don’t suppose you know how to take one of these apart like they do in movies…. he asked, keeping the conversation in his head so he didn’t distract any of the fighters. The spirit shook his head. After my time, boss. he responded and Tarin sighed. Maybe that one kid…Ashton maybe? Maybe he could use the gun. Kealey pointed out that the guards were being compelled and Lee requested that everyone just hold the guards still until she could deal with them.
A guard was approaching Kealey now and despite the grin on his face he absolutely reeked of terror. Tarin didn’t need to be an empath to see that and it made the compulsion make sense. It was a terrifying scenario to imagine. Tarin was about to call in the spirits to intervene, but Lee moved then…she moved really fast to come up on the guard. Tarin was ready to help if need be but let Lee do her thing.
Keep the guards that are conscious down until Lee can get to them, if the others need help, prioritize that. Tony, stay right with her and help in any way you can. Just like when you spar, anything she says goes.
I know…came the slightly nonplussed voice.
Good Tarin said.
Looking again at the spirit he’d told to stay close, Tarin changed his plans slightly, Go get more friends, as many as will come. he said and the spirit only hesitated for a moment before heading off on its errand.
That accomplished, Tarin approached the group again, ”Anyone want this gun…because I sure as hell don’t.”
