The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Emily looked in amazement as Sylar scarfed down his food. Her mouth was literally agape. “Should…should I get you some more?” It didn’t seem that the boy had heard her. He was too engulfed in the fast food. “You know I’ve never had a hamburger or a hotdog before. In fact beef was a rare delicacy. Now you can find it anywhere. It’s actually amazing how easy it is to find whatever type of food you want, from any nation or region, in this lovely City of New York.”
It didn’t take long at all for the food to be gone. Emily beamed at the gratitude. “My pleasure.” If her blood flowed, she would have blushed.
“What were we talking about before I left?” She thought for a moment. “Oh right, your skin turning into unfeeling armor. I don’t feel anything either, just pressure. Kind of stinks. I mean, it’s great if I was in fights and stuff. But I miss the warmth and comfort of human touch.” She shrugged. “Eh, it’s been centuries. I’ve pretty much forgotten what it’s like.”
“So…What do you like to do for fun?” Emily never knew when it was appropriate to leave. She had been told a few times that she tends to overstay her welcome. If the girl had her way, she’d follow Sylar home. Being dead was lonely.

The temperature was really beginning to cool. Or maybe it was the rain that had dropped temperatures into the fifties. Emily wasn’t bothered by it at all. She was doing what most people wouldn’t think about in this weather: taking a swim.
Swimming was something Emily really enjoyed. The fact that she didn’t have to come back up for air allowed her to enjoy it even more. There were no interruptions in her watery world. All of the pools had been covered up or emptied. The dead girl decided to take a swim in the New York Harbor. Because of the rain, very few boats were in the open water. Emily had it all to herself.
In water, your senses are dulled. You can’t see well in the murky depths and sound is muffled. When you are awake for eternity, getting a break from the bombardment of your senses is a welcomed change.
Emily had been below the surface for around two hours. She wore a diving suit to keep fish and other sea creatures from biting her skin. The rest of her body was bare. In front of her, something seemed to fall in the water. It could be a purse, a body, even a car. The water was too murky to tell. She swam closer to take a better look.

Emily enjoyed going to grand openings. She wanted small businesses to succeed, so she tried her best to support them. Emily wanted to arrive before the crowd. She wasn’t the only New Yorker who enjoyed openings. Everyone wanted to try the newest, hippest establishment. Emily hoped this place would deliver.
The décor was spot on. It was subtle but saw the ties between everything inside and the name of the bar. Everything from the light fixtures to the napkins fit into the theme. There were very few others in the bar. She decided to sit in a corner booth and watch the other patrons mingle in. Before she sat down, she went to the bar and ordered a bottle of apple ale. It was perfect for the coming autumn. Not that she could enjoy it. As she always did, she would put the bottle to her lips and nothing more.
The corner booth allowed her to see pretty much the whole establishment. She liked that.

Emily grinned at Nalia. She was a strong woman with a good head on her shoulders. Her neighbors would take care of her. Poverty brought people together. Tragedy brought them even closer. Nalia had helped countless others in the neighborhood, bringing food to the elderly and having a couch for them to sleep on. She had even helped an accidental home birth. Emily wasn’t worried for the woman at all. She would be fine.
Emily turned to Sveta when she spoke. She knew the bathroom was just one room, not one with individual stalls. She could just point the way. But there was a message in the woman’s eyes. It seemed she wanted to speak to her about something. Emily wanted to speak to the woman, also. How had she survived the flames? They were on her. Her skin should have sizzled and cracked. Maybe it had something to do with this helpful vigilante.
“Of course I will show you.” She turned to Hector and spoke quietly into his ear so no one else could hear. “Stay here with your mother. She needs you now. Vengeance can come later.” Hector looked surprised. Probably because Emily had guessed what he was thinking. He sat there motionless, then gave a small nod.
Emily stood up and headed toward the lady’s room. She held the door open for Sveta to enter.

“Great. I’ll head up and get you something.” Emily found a ladder and began to climb upward. “Now don’t go anywhere.” She lifted the sewer cover and peaked outside. “I know where we are. I’ll be back soon.” Making sure no one was around, she slipped out.
There was a twenty-four hour walk-up burger place about a block from where Emily stood. She walked away from others, sure that she smelled of sewage. After waiting behind three people and a couple, the girl ordered five double hamburgers, ketchup only. Emily wasn’t sure how much a black-armored mutant ate. She decided to get two hotdogs, just in case. They gave her a plastic bag to put everything in.
Emily made her way back to the man hole. Nothing exciting happened on the way.
The man hole was harder to lift than to push up. It was also slightly difficult to go back down the ladder with a bag of food. “Sylar? I got you five hamburgers and two hotdogs. I hope I got enough food.” She reached out and handed the plastic bag over. "Go ahead and eat. It won't bother me."

Guns had evolved so much in the past decades. Emily remembered when melee weapons were more affective. Now they were more decoration than weapon. This man seemed to be pretty skilled with firearms. Had he shot all these people? The blood would say yes. But why hadn’t anyone heard all the noise? And how did this man have so much ammo?
Emily gathered a little courage when she was joined by zombie dogs. So the boy she met could make zombie animals. That was pretty awesome. But they didn’t last very long against bullets.
Emily cringed each time a dog was struck. He could hear the boy cry out in pain. They must be connected somehow. What had Emily done?
“Why are you doing this?!” She yelled into the building. The situation had spiraled out of control. “You’re hurting the boy!” Not that the man would care. He had taken all these lives already. Should Emily take the boy and just run away? But then the man would get away with all this carnage. And there was still the injured man inside the building. Emily couldn’t just leave him in there to die.
“Don’t hurt that man anymore. I don’t know what you want from him. But please, let me take his place.” Emily didn’t know what else to do.

Emily smiled coyly and averted her eyes. Oh this guy was good. It almost made her forget about the nagging feeling of not knowing if she should reveal her mutation.
The prices at this restaurant were high. David probably had a light snack for lunch to keep room for the gourmet meal he would be enjoying this evening. He probably was hungry. It would be awfully rude if Emily didn’t allow him to eat. Plus, getting a reservation for this place was probably difficult. Why waste it?
“I actually don’t eat.” She paused, wondering how to word this. “I have a mutation and it keeps me from eating.” There. She said it. If he wanted, he could get up and leave. Sure, he was a gentleman and probably wouldn’t, but Emily believed she could tell if he had a disgust for mutants. If he showed discomfort, she would excuse herself, making up some excuse for her sudden departure.
“But, I would love to sit here and still enjoy this lovely restaurant. I can order something small so the waiter doesn’t think it odd I have no food.”

“I can actually take in air in my lungs and expel it. It helps when I swim. Makes me more buoyant to be filled with air. Also it helps with the talking. Which I do a lot of.”
Emily smiled. If there was one thing she loved, it was getting people food. Of course, she preferred to make it herself, but retrieving food was almost just as good. “Is there a place I could go above us that’s open this late? And what would you enjoy? Are you strictly carnivorous or would you like a salad?” Emily would try to fill his stomach. Then maybe he wouldn’t have to rob anywhere tonight.
The girl looked at Sylar in the dim light. Emily realized she was still holding on to his shoulder thing and put her hand down. “Do you feel in these, or is it some sort of armor-exoskeleton thing?” She ran her finger over some of the black on his arm. She tried to pinch it, but it wouldn't give.

The rest of the table ordered water. The son asked for a coke also. No one was hungry, but they ordered an appetizer to share. Hector stroked the turtle that sat in his lap.
The masked woman introduced herself and expressed her condolences. The Dominican woman smiled at her. “It is all right. We will rebuild. Others have already invited us into their home. Everything will be ok. I am Nalia. This is my son, Hector, and my friend, Emily.”
Emily looked over at her friend and her son. She could tell something was bothering the boy. What had caused the Trinitarios to become so enraged that they would set a house on fire? The girl hoped Hector wouldn’t try to get back at the gang. “Thank you for all your help and saving my life. I don’t know how those flames didn’t burn me.”
Nalia nodded in agreement. “It was some sort of miracle.”

So on August 24th, Emily moved into the dorm. Her roommate was a lovely girl who enjoyed pink and black together and some show called Pretty Little Liars. They got along well enough, especially since Emily kept her mutation a secret. Emily had told her she had a boyfriend off-campus so the un-dead girl would never be sleeping in their room. That was fine with the other freshman, Cynthia.
Greek Rush began the same week classes started. Emily joined a Medical co-ed organization. She found it the best for meeting the right people. There was another medical Greek organization on campus, but the one that she joined had the most diversity. There were even some members with visible mutations. Emily couldn’t have asked for a better organization to join.
She had done a bit of reading on her class subjects. The girl who did not need to eat or sleep had plenty of time to study. Classes had started September 2nd and were going pretty well. There was one man in her lab group that believed women had no business in the sciences. He barely let Emily contribute to their work, if at all. Since then, Emily had asked to change groups. She didn’t want to deal with some male chauvinist.
It was Saturday and Emily was once again in the park. There were a lot more students now. She sat with one of her Calculus friends and had just finished going over Monday’s homework. The temperature was beginning to cool. Fall would be upon them soon.

Emily frowned when Sylar said they were coming to a junction. The girl wasn’t ready to part with her new acquaintance. She had no other matters to attend to, other than a shower. Yes, she would definitely need a shower.
“You know what I fear? Being buried alive and not being able to escape. And maggots and other insects find their way to me and there’s nothing I can do about it. I would be eaten alive, but I wouldn’t feel it, just hear it. I think that makes it extra creepy. It would take months.” Emily shuddered at the thought. “It’s healthy to have fear. Without it, humans would have gone extinct centuries ago. It does stink that they fear us, but what else can we do. Maybe we could educate them. Maybe go to schools and do an educational presentation.”
Emily highly doubted Sylar would do such a thing. She giggled at the thought of him in glasses and a tie, giving a powerpoint on Mutants Are Friends. She pictured him and the children singing songs in a circle. Adorable.
“Which way are you headed? Do you want me to get you some food? You’re probably hungry.”

Emily waved away the comment about mutants being gods. Sure, there were powerful mutants. And maybe in uncivilized societies without advanced science, they could be considered such. But Emily knew better. Mutants were just people with gifts. Nothing more, nothing less. And these gifts were handed down by the one, true Supreme Being. To think otherwise would be blasphemous. “He taught you a lesson? Like algebra? Or did he beat you up?” She chuckled a little.
From the way Sylar spoke about eating and the fear that people had for him, she wondered if he regretted his mutation. “You should see how people react when I walk around without my head on. You got claws and a sword-tail, sure. But you’re a new monster. Human kind has feared the dead since the beginning. I’m just lucky I can hide my mutation most of the time.” Emily wanted to ask him his feelings about his mutation, but she didn’t even know her own feelings on the matter.
It was a blessing, wasn’t it? To live forever? To not feel pain or need to eat or sleep? But it was so lonely. You couldn’t let people get close. Physically or into your heart. Ugh! Emily was being depressing again. No time for that. Life was too long to revel in sadness.
It was kind of a joke when Emily asked if he was a hit-man. The tone of Sylar’s voice showed she probably hit another nerve. Why did she keep asking bad questions? “I’m glad your looks helped you get a job.”
Emily listened to the young man’s question. “I actually went there to find a job. What better place for a dead girl to work then with other dead? I revealed my mutation and the owner found it fascinating. We worked on how to do my makeup. A large piece of metal went through my torso once and he was able to make it look like it never happened. He’s an artist really.”
In front of them, Emily began to hear the rush of water getting louder. “Where are we going anyway? Are we close? It feels like we’ve been walking for awhile.”
