The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Watching Jack guzzle wine while trying to prove just how experience he was with time traveling was not exactly what Paul would consider a good time. Any words of warning he might offer were obviously being lost on Lumen as she was completely set on trying to straighten out the tragedy in her past. He was beginning to realize that it was almost an obsession with her and while he could sympathize with her feeling of loss he couldn't understand the rest of it. He had never felt the desire to try and track down his family after they had been separated by the war but that had been a different situation. Lumen's brother had been taken not just separated by some sort of disaster.
"I can find some time if you need me to..." He was starting to respond to Lumen's statement about scheduling when Jack interupted them both. Paul hadn't actually discussed going back in time with Lumen, he had simply come to support her at this meeting. Did she really want him going back?
"Jack... Jack! This isn't a good," Paul began before he suddenly felt himself being pressed back against his seat with such force that it quite literally took his breath away. Right in front of him Lumen was pressed face down on the table while Jack stood there beside his candle stick. That silly grin was plastered on his face and if it had been physically possible for Paul to get over to him he would have slapped it right off of his face.
Unable to speak, Paul was cursing in his mind as he watched the room and everyone around him blur and then suddenly he was falling. The seat below him had disappeared as had everything else and he was just tumbling through nothingness toward the great unknown.
What was it about this 'artist' that just made Paul want to punch him in the face? Over the year he had been forced to deal with lots of annoying people but Mr. West was definitely moving higher on the list. If he continued at this pace he might even qualify for 'the most annoying person of ALL TIME' before they left the display.
"I'll cheer up." Paul answered with the best smile he could muster. He fell into step with Lumen but then fell slightly behind her when she released his hand and, as any self respecting guy in his position would, took a moment to appreciate the young ladies fine derriere. "I'll cheer up just as soon as I can kiss you properly." He murmured under his breath.
When he saw the easily recognizable Charlie Chaplin begin to move, Paul slowly down his pace ever so slightly in order to allow Lumen to get just a little bit further ahead. For some reason Mr. Chaplin had chosen Lumen to flatter through imitation. As he moved behind her with expressions that were absolutely dead on, Paul couldn't help but chuckle. He did his best to hold in the laughter whenever Lumen turned around but it was hard. Mr. Chaplin was definitely one of the best comic geniuses. Being able to make people laugh without making a sound was an art form.
Joining in on the clapping once Lumen recognized the man, Paul couldn't help himself. The genius had to be recognized. "Very nice Charlie... I've always loved your pictures. Classics that never get old."
Up until that moment Lara had been able to silence a certain hip hop artist but now he could no longer be contained. "You are so wrong Pauly!" He corrected as he tore away from Lara, "Greta Garbo had to be the best of ALL TIME and as for comic, well, does the name Max Linder mean anything to ya? Best silent comic of ALL TIME! Remember that bra!"
Charlie Chaplin put a hand to his heart and stumbled back, pantomiming like a knife had been stuck in his heart while Paul shot the hip hop artist a dirty look. Was there any subject this man didn't have an opinion about?
"How about those authors." Paul was able to start smiling against when he looked back at Lumen. Yes, even with everything going on there was at least one good thing about the evening. "I'm hoping for Tolkien or perhaps C.S. Lewis myself."
"I am not a fan of books. I would never want a book's autograph." Kanye commented once again. At least time it sounded like he couldn't talk about who was the best author. Thank the fates!
"I haven't exactly been sleeping the best over the past few months." Luke replied with the slightest of smile before knitting his eyebrows together while trying to remember. Already Raina was taking his hand and leading him into the house. "I did eat... sometime. I'm just not sure when."
Apparently the red haired beauty had already decided that he needed nourishment and so she immediately led him over to a stool by the bar while she went to the fridge. In a few minute she had put together a fruit salad and some bread along with a tall glass of water. It wasn't exactly fine dining but if the fruit was as fresh and tasty as it smelled it would be better than most five star eateries back in New York. "You know me well." The smile was more evident now before he dug a fork in and began to eat at the fruit. He had been so worried about his meeting with Raina that he had forgotten just how hungry he was but now his stomach was reminding... urgently.
Luke did his best to maintain table manners but it was hard. A simple meal of bread and fruit suddenly tasted better than the best Fillet Mignon. In short order he had wolfed down both the fruit and bread and drained the glass of water. It left him feeling much better though he was slightly embarrassed about Raina seeing him eat that way.
"Do you teach school tomorrow?" He asked as he focused on Raina once again. The past few days had been so crazy he had lost track of time. Was it the weekend yet? Did they even take weekends off from school here on the island?
Paul was a little surprised that Sebastian was speaking so openly about his age in front of two people that he didn't know a thing about. He had no idea if they were mutants, curious humans, or perhaps even under cover cops send to investigate him. Why was he willing to share so openly and honestly? He was wondering how Emily would react when she suddenly began speaking about being alive during the 1820's and having slaves use the new French espresso machine. Apparently Paul was not only meeting one immortal but he was meeting two...
"I guess I'm the new kid on the block then." Paul commented dryly as he finished mopping and placed the now filthy mop back in its bucket, "War torn Europe in the early 1900s." Leaning up against one of the counters, he focused his eyes on the unicorn. "That's why I said we had similarities... I just didn't realize that all three of us were so similar."
Although, there was one interesting thought that Paul had to wonder about... how was it that he, apparently being the youngest, looking like the oldest? It meant there was something different about his immortality. Perhaps it wasn't even real immortality? Maybe he just aged much slower than most. For these two young looking people to have living so long meant that they must have true immortality. But did he? Was he really like them?
The question about healing the dead was interesting. Paul came back from the dead but he wasn't sure why a person would want to heal the dead. They were dead after all... what would they care about being healed?
"Knives are easy to conceal and extremely dangerous in close quarter combat so that's what I've learned about. I can use a fire arm when necessary though I'm not an expert." Paul responded with his own shrug. He normally didn't spend much time thinking about fighting or combat. He knew that he was capable of defending himself and also knew that he would come back even if he was killed. There were far more enjoyable things to think of on a day to day basis that killed and death.
"As important as orders are I think that following your own heart is more important. If you believe in mutant utopia then you should follow that order until your dieing day. If you don't believe its possible then you should find something that you do believe in and fight for that instead."
The idea of a mutant utopia was a dangerous one in Paul's mind. He believed in fighting for his brother and sister mutants when necessary but more important he continued to search for the ultimate dream. The person that could unite not only mutants but humans as well. Why should it only be a mutant utopia? Why couldn't it be a utopia for all? Of course mutants were the more powerful but did that mean they had the right to oppress those weaker than themselves? That was the sort of mentality that dictators had used for centuries with little to show for it.
"It's true that justice means different things to different people." Paul admitted as he thought back to the world he had grown up in. War torn Europe had shown how different people could view justice. Those fighting in the Third Reich had believe that human purity was justice. The Allies had believe that justice meant no one should be oppressed for those sorts of ideals. Those two different views of justice had thrown the world into the second World War. Was it possible that the idea of mutant utopia or mutant purity would lead the world into a third world war? "Only time will tell how if the cycle will continue." He murmured to himself.
Turning to glance at the computer, Paul once again noted the time. It was probably best for him to head back home. As enjoyable as the conversation with Aura had been he did have a few other things to accomplish.
"Thanks for the enjoyable conversation." He smiled as he stood up, tilting his head ever so slightly in the sort of bow that had been more common in years past, "It's been very nice meeting you Aura. I'm sure we'll bump into each other again sometime."
"I'm not going anywhere ever again." Luke replied. He had been quietly sitting on the bench, listening and simply enjoying the sound of her voice and those facial expression that lit up his heart. Since she had been so open and willing to share her history then it seemed only fair he passed on his as well.
"I buried myself in work... typical me I guess. As usual I thought you were better of without me. I made it work for a year little over a year but I was miserable. Deborah, the company CFO and a long time friend knocked some sense into me and then I was off to the great white North."
It was strange to think that he had forced himself to go through such torture for so long. Raina was his real home which meant that wherever she was was where he belonged. "Sedna decided that I needed to be test so she made your brother and I compete in a little contest. I don't know if I necessarily won but I at least performed well enough to find out where you had gone and now... I'm here."
Reaching a hand out to take one of hers into it, he gave it a gentle squeeze, "I'm so sorry about everything... you can just chalk it up to my being an idiot. I seem to have trouble with misunderstandings."
I got an e-mail from Lumen and she's been sick and now is busy playing catch up at school. She's gonna try her best to get back up and posting this weekend.
There was no way to really know for sure whether this was a good idea or not. When Lumen had first begun to discuss the possibility of a mutant with time traveling powers he had thought it sounded a little bit odd but now he found himself at this restaurant, waiting alongside Lumen for the little time traveler to show up. The only piece of information that he didn't really have was exactly why she was going to go back in time. Maybe it had something to do with the missing children she was trying to track down or maybe it was something more personal. Either way, he was here to support Lumen.
After placing an order for a glass of red wine with the waiter, a young man suddenly appeared and took a seat at their table. He was fidgety and extremely nervous. Almost without thinking, Paul glanced around to see if there was someone here that might be spooking the young man. As he scanned the room, his eyes paused as they fell on a figure that jogged some memories in the back of his mind. Hadn't he been questioned by that... detective, if he recalled correctly?
Turning his gaze back over to Jack, Paul's eyes narrowed ever so slightly. Was this kid running from the cops? Paul knew exactly how trouble he personally was dealing with so he could safely judge whether he was endangering his friend in any way. This young man was an unknown quantity and that made him slight nervous.
"It'll either be just before or just after your brothers abduction."
Turning his head, Paul looked at Lumen with one eyebrow raised. He had known that her brother was missing but she had never mentioned the fact that he had actually been abducted. "You sure about this Lumen?" Paul found himself voicing his only concern, softly so that it couldn't be overheard by anyone else and would probably even be difficult for Jack to hear, "Is this really the route you want to take?"
"I guess you can't know for sure how you'd react until you're actually in the situation." The comment was paired with a sly smile. Even though Aura said she'd probably have just wounded him, Paul doubted it. This young woman had already proven she had a penchant for death so why would she have treated him any better than Lori? Lori would have left him alone if he could have proved he was a mutant but since he was unable to she had been forced to make the split second decision to eliminate all witnesses. Aura would more than likely have done the exact same thing... maybe worse.
Aura's comment about why soldiers fought was interesting and it made Paul think back to his time in the French military. It was a little different since he had been forced to choose been the military or prison but he had known men that had volunteered that were of the same mentality. "Soldiers fight so that others don't have to." It was a simple truth tat he had heard said by countless warriors of the years. Thankfully he was not one of those common soldiers... more like a high priced assassin or something.
The young woman's intelligence was really quite impressive. Paul had never even considered the fact that he was spending time around a place that mutants fled to in order to escape bad situations. Of course he would have only met those that had gone through a troubled past at a place like this. Those that came from truly loving homes would probably still be in those homes. Why would they come to the Sanctuary?
"I can be very improvisational when necessary but I'm more skilled with my knife work." Paul said slowly, doing his best to ignore the distaste he felt at her referring to a favorite way of killing a person. He had ways he was better with but he couldn't say that there was one way he enjoyed one more than another. Thankfully she didn't focus on that issue for very long before quickly shifting it on to another question. He really had no idea what she might be talking about or why she might be asking but it definitely deserved some thought.
"How long do a leader's orders hold meaning..." He mused out loud as he settled back in his seat and stared up toward the ceiling for a moment. He had never had a leader he was devoted to so he probably wasn't the best person to ask but he would try his best to answer. "I guess it really depends on what the order was. Some instructions really only apply during a set period of time while others resonate beyond the grave. For example, an order to invade enemy territory applies for a little while but an order to fight against injustice resonates through all time."
It was that magical moment you see in the movies. Two people, both hurting, just looking at one another and then something clicks. Moving together into the loving or passionate embrace that indicates that everything will get better from here.
It happened so fast but in another strange way it seemed to go in slow motion. Raina listening to what he had to say, took a step forward, and then whispered his name. The next thing he knew, he was holding her in his arms and pressing kisses against her hair while she sobbed into his chest.
"Never again." He whispered in response, his arms tightening around her to both hold her steady and cradle her protectively. He would never again do anything to cause this woman pain. For the rest of his life he would devote himself to making her happy and making her feel loved. It would take a life time to make up for his hurting her so much but he was willing to give her that.
"The company doesn't need me. Really, I was just a figure head. I put some very good friends of mine in charge and I trust me to handle things." His words were soft, almost being whispered into her ears as he held her. It wasn't romantic per se but at the same time it would help to show her that he was serious about this. He was willing to give her everything. "I'm not going anywhere."
For now, Luke was content to just stand there and hold Raina. There was something about having her in his arms again that just felt right. It was like there was a void in his chest that only she could fit perfectly. Perhaps someone else might be similar but no one besides this woman would be just right. "I missed you!"
(OOC: The sound track for this particular post. I thought it was appropriate.)
IC: She was looking at the dolphin as though she was glad to receive it and she had even taken a step in his direction in a non-threatening manner. Her hands weren't clenched as though she were about to deck him and she was yelling or screaming... all of these were good signs. She want on to talk about how this was where she was living but Luke didn't really pay that much attention. He was just to busy looking at the woman he had missed for so long. Now that he was actually near her his stupidity was even more obvious. How could he have let such a good thing go?
"Luke... why are you here?"
The way she said it just broke his heart. All he wanted to do was take her into his arms and make it all better but that was no longer his right. He had let this relationship die so now it was time for him to make it right. But there was nothing wrong with moving a little closer... was there?
Slowly he reached up and removed his sunglasses, letting his sightless blue eyes meet Raina's. He didn't really know if they were capable of showing emotion the way people talking about but he prayed that at that moment they could show something. "I'm here to say I'm sorry." His voice was husky as he took a step forward, one arm lifting ever so slightly as if to touch her but then dropping back to his side, "I'm here to swallow my pride and tell you that it was my fault. I let what we had slip away because of my own insecurities."
This wasn't making him feel any better, in fact he was even starting to feel worse. He wanted things to be like they were, pretending like nothing had happened, but that wouldn't work. This had to be dealt with first and to deal with it he had to say the one thing that would leave him at his most vulnerable. He had to let her know the truth. "I'm here... I'm here because I love you. I tried to live without you and found that I couldn't. I'm here... I'm here to ask you... to ask you if you can forgive me. To ask if you still feel something for me?" His voice was close to cracking from the emotion but he fought for control. He wouldn't break down now... he couldn't.
She was even more beautiful than he remembered. Sometimes people talked about how a memory changed over time to become even better than the reality but in this instance, as good as the memory was, the reality was better. Luke could see that few strands of hair that had worked loose of the braid and were now gently swaying in the breeze... he could smell the scent of her skin combined with that of the ocean breeze... could he say it again? She was beautiful.
He felt tongue tied and all thought of planned speeches and comments flew out the window. He was lost in the moment as he found himself completely overwhelmed in Raina's presence. Part of him wanted to just run over, taking her into his arms, and kiss her without any abandon but the more rational part of him made it clear that wasn't a good idea. What were the chance she would respond in kind to that sort of move? One in a million? One in ten million? They certainly weren't good.
"I, uh... I brought you a dolphin." Luke same somewhat lamely as he pulled the plush toy from under his arm and held it up for her inspection. As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he was furious with himself. That was the sort of thing a silly teenager would say. He was supposed to be a fully grown, fully matured man and that was the best he could do?
"You look good... Naveed and Sedna said you left the same day I arrived up North." He finally managed to couple together a slightly more adult sounding sentence. He complimented her and also provided information with how he had found her. At least now he was moving on the right track.
"Love for the King?" Paul thought with an amused expression on his face. Music had never really been his thing though he had heard a few Bob Dylan song that were decent. Oh well... he might as well try conversing with some of these stars since he had the opportunity.
"So tell me Elvis... what's your own favorite song?" Paul asked as he turned his attention back to the wax figure in front of him. It really was impressive how realistic these figures had been made. He looked like he was in the prime of his career, still fit and energetic with the smile and shimmie that drove the women wild.
"Well that's a good question Sonny... I started out loving 'Trying To Get To You' but I think now I would have to say I'm 'Hurt'." The star answered without a moments hesitation.
"Interesting..." Paul said with a nod before noticing Lumen's approach. Breathing a sigh of relief he gave a nod to the man and then graciously accepted the blond's arm looped through his own. "This was not how I expected to be spending my New Years Eve, that's for sure. Shall we move on to see what's in the next room?"
"Come on Johnny! Let's go with them." Elvis said with a sneer as he threw an arm around Willie Wonka/Jack Sparrow, "The fair is moving on!"
"Lumen... there is one thing I need to say." Paul said with a smile that had a touch of teasing and a touch of something else in it as they moved toward the doorway to the next room, "Even with an iconic beauty like Marilyn Monroe here you are definitely the most beautiful woman around." Having finished his statement, Paul leaned down as though he was going to kiss her when suddenly a voice rang out from the room they were approaching.
"How can you say that Pauly?! My woman Angelina Jolie is one of the most beautiful women of all time!" The yelled out statement was enough for Paul to lift his head back up and look over at the man that was standing with large sunglasses covering his eyes and armed crossed over his chest.
"Excuse me?" He asked incredulously.
"She's right there with Sherlock, my man! Your girl don't even compare to some of the fine women in here!"
"Calm down my dear Kanye." Sherlock chimed in from where he stood with Marilyn and Lara, "Let's try to keep things civil."
"Can't I guy get a break?" Paul asked with obvious distaste as he moved to walk by Kanye, "Why don't you go find someone else to insult? Sorry Lumen... maybe the next room will be calmer."
Luke stood among some trees, listening to Raina as she moved through the house accomplishing various tasks before finally making her way back outside. He had shaved after waking up from a full nights rest, dressed in the the same sneakers and khakis as the previous day though he had changed to an aqua silk jacquard shirt. He obviously had no idea about the color but he at least knew it was clean and relatively wrinkle free. He didn't want to extend his sonar yet, knowing that Raina would probably sense his presence, so he just waited until it seemed like she had settled in. It was a beautiful evening with the sun still shining down warmly. The breeze was gentle but brought a freshness as it melded the scents of salt water and fresh fruit. The plush dolphin was carried securely under his arm when he finally worked up the nerve to vacate his seclusion in the trees and begin the final trek toward her house.
Slowly moving up the road that led to the house, Luke focused on putting one foot in front of the other while controlling his breathing. If he gave in to his fight or flight response then he'd be running away as fast as he could without ever facing the red haired beauty. The nervousness in the pit of his stomach seemed to be gnawing away at him like a starving dog while his heart pounded like a symphony's bass drum. It was all he could do to force himself to take in a deep breath, let it slowly, and then repeat the process.
He could hear her on the back deck as he slowly mounted the stairs at the front of the house. There was the soft squelch of someone biting into ripe fruit which meant she was probably eating, and if his nose was right then he could smell the scent of pear in the air. Slowly making his way around the side, he paused a the corner of the house and leaned up against it. He was silent for several moment, just listening and enjoying Raina in her relaxed environment. Unfortunately he was about to shatter that state...
"Hi..." He spoke softly, but loud enough for her to hear it quite clearly. It was only one word but it was all he could say for the moment. Extending his sonar, he allowed it to caress over her face as he watched her expression. Would she be glad to see him? Wary of why he had come? Perhaps angry and hateful because of what he had done to her? Whatever the emotion, it was better than he deserved.
The conversation had leveled out and Paul was just beginning to enjoy himself when curses suddenly rang out from the kitchen. Raising an eyebrow he glanced in that direction while wondering if he should go check on things. Apparently Emily had no such question and had responded with action. Her running form quickly disappeared into the other room leaving Paul quite alone.
"Huh... all dressed up with nowhere to go... guess I should go check on them." Paul muttered to himself before rising to his feet and casually strolling into the other room.
It looked like there had been a war. A war between Sebastian and a fancy looking coffee machine and the victor was most definitely the machine. Technology one, unicorn zero. "You didn't have to put yourself through this... I'm fine without coffee." He commented with just a touch of an amused chuckle in his voice, "Can I help? Do you have a mop bucket around here?"
Since this was an industrial sized kitchen it meant there was probably a slop sink toward the back so without even waiting for a response Paul headed in that direction. He had been in a few professional kitchens in the past and they were all pretty similar. In just a few moments he had located the basic cleaning implements and added hot water to the bucket. Rolling it back to where the other two were working, Paul set to work cleaning up wherever the hot black liquid had hit the floor. "You must make it strong. I think you might need to re-wax a few spots when this is done." He joked as he worked, "Is this how you get most of your volunteers Sebastian? Create a situation that just begs people to jump in and help?"
