The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She raised an eyebrow. Lenna was being awfully defensive about being in love with the guy. Perhaps she already knew it was stupid to love and just didn't want to admit it? Or maybe she just wasn't that bad off yet. In either case, Mina gave a shrug. Lenna followed up her protestations that she wasn't in love with a laugh and a comment about dumb mistakes.
"That's good. Love is a dumb mistake."
Another drink and Mina felt like explaining a little.
"Love makes you stupid and weak in most cases. When it doesn't you end up dying an early death anyway. Overall it's best avoided."
She stared at the rows of bottles along the wall behind the bar.
"So how did Mr. Nice Guy impress you?"
After all, it was about time Lenna answered a question instead of vice versa.
Cosmina uttered another laugh at Lenna's suggestion that she would kill for money. It was entirely true and she'd done so more times than she cared to count at that particular moment but that was beside the point. Lenna didn't need to know that. Hence the laugh.
"Oh please, I have some scruples. Hurting people is just wrong!"
That had sounded utterly absurd the moment she'd said it but it had needed to be said anyway. As it turned out the reason why Lenna had turned down the man from earlier wasn't that he was a jerk. No, in fact the poor woman was suffering from an attraction to someone else. It might not have been love, Mina had no way of knowing that, but it was enough to turn her stomach and make her down a significant portion of her drink the moment the bartender finished pouring.
"Love, ugh, so entirely useless and dangerous to boot. You'd be better off without him. Less likely to die."
Style and skill? Feh, style only mattered when it was used as an expression of wealth. Skill was a different matter altogether.
"How are style and skill related to personality at all? Style doesn't matter. It varies from person to person. Only useful if it's an expression of a person's wealth."
Mina paused in her answer giving to wonder when this had become a Q&A session for her rather than Lenna. Though the questions she asked were interesting enough.
"Skill on the other hand, well it depends on the sort of skill the man has doesn't it? Money is still the most important of course. Fame doesn't matter."
Mina drained the last of her drink and flagged down the bartender for a refill.
"What traits would you consider to make up a good personality? Not that it matters."
Mina took a drink and pondered Lenna's second question.
"Both say plenty about a person. Both are useful. And both can be unceremoniously dumped if the amount of money on their person is merely a ruse to feign wealth."
That, Mina assumed, was the gist of Lenna's question. Though Mina did wonder why Lenna was suddenly so curious about such simple matters. Of course she was probably just one of the many people who just didn't understand simple common sense. Why did almost no one else understand the importance of money? Mina supposed that was a question without an answer. Just like why people expected to have their disposable coffee cups warn them that their coffee is hot when they would have complained if it wasn't.
Apparently considering money important was funny. That was slightly irksome but not enough to wipe Cosmina's smile away. At the very least Lenna no longer seemed like she would have happily killed everyone in the bar for some peace and quiet. Lenna asked whether good looks were tangible. That was an odd way to phrase the question but she could adapt to it.
"Nice but not necessary. A bonus if you would."
As long as the man had money his looks didn't matter. He would eventually die and the money revert to her. If necessary Cosmina could speed up that eventuality. Really, it only made sense. Money could get you anything if the right amount was used.
A man cleared his throat and the little girl ran to him and started putting on what was an attempt at the act of the century. There was no need for this to get out of hand. Cosmina lowered her gun before speaking.
"This from the girl who caused all of this trouble with her mutation? Not to mention pepper sprayed me in the face. Alright, I got a little jumpy with the gun but when people are being flung off of their feet and animal habitats destroyed I'd say being jumpy is a natural reaction."
Cosmina smiled sweetly.
"No need for this to escalate. We can all just walk away from this."
Of course if they didn't take the offer then Cosmina would have to draw on them again. If she could disable the girl and the man with a bullet or two apiece then she could easily run off and join one of the panicked mobs trying desperately to get out of the zoo. It would work if she could get away. If not then this would get ugly. She'd have to call on a favor or two to avoid problems.
In more immediate concerns she could manage if the fight got up close and personal. She had her training and she had a gun. Even better, her powers inhibited the girl's. She had a chance to win and come away clean. Now to see what moves they would make.
Ooo now there was some spirit! Foolish really considering she was facing an armed gunman but it boded well for the girl's future prospects that she at least had some guts. Of course she needed to learn when to display them but that was a lesson for another time. It was cute that she thought she could fight though. By the sound of it the little one needed reminding just how flimsy she was.
"No girl, you can't fight. You can't control the strength of your power when you use it. Nor do you have absolute control over when it gets used. On top of that you don't seem to have an ounce of fighting experience outside of using your power. What happens when someone comes along that is stronger than you, faster than you, and can render your power utterly worthless, hm?"
Cosmina smirked and fired a bullet into the ground beside the girl.
"You end up dead, that's what."
She paused to allow that to sink in before saying something else.
"I will say you were very lucky to get that power though. It will be very useful once you actually learn to use it properly."
There was still the matter of the girl's query about why her power couldn't effect Cosmina. What to tell the girl though? Perhaps a fun lie.
"As to why your power didn't have an effect on me? That's simple. I'm invulnerable. Mind you pepper spray still stings like mad."
Cosmina gave another warm chuckle as the woman denied that money was a decent reason to be with a person. Cosmina had money too. That didn't mean there wasn't room for more. Remembering her drink, the brunette took a quick sip.
"I don't see why not. It's certainly better than other reasons." she lifted a shoulder in a shrug, "Not that being in a relationship is smart to begin with but if you're going to risk it then it's best if it has some tangible benefits."
It didn't escape Cosmina's notice that the other woman had avoided her question by focusing on something else Mina had said. She hadn't expected a response so the lack of one wasn't off putting at all. If the other one wanted to brood that was her affair. She was mildly interesting and the conversation wasn't dull so Mina had no excuse to leave just yet. What would Lenna say about her latest statement? Was she one of those boring 'Love is the greatest thing in the universe!' types? Ugh, Mina had to hope not.
"Jerk yes but he did have money. Surely that excuses some of his character faults."
Mina gave a shrug. It wasn't any business of hers why this woman wouldn't act with any sense regarding a rich man. Other people did tend to be a bit weird about gold digging. That's what they called it and it was mostly true. That didn't mean it wasn't a valid approach to romance and all that. If you had to marry someone then surely it was better to marry someone rich who could easily provide for you. At least then when one or both of you ended up dead things would be taken care of.
"Nice to meet you Lenna."
Cosmina allowed her smile to grow a little for a moment or two.
"So what sorts of 'other things' are bothering you, hm?"
Mina highly doubted the woman would share at all. In her position Cosmina wouldn't. Either that or she'd lie.
So in the end the girl was just another little girl. She had power but she was still far too young to be of much use without careful handling. Cosmina already had one toy that required that sort of gentle touch. She didn't want another. This toy was better suited to people who had the patience to deal with it. The girl loosed another blast, this one seemingly brought on entirely by fear, and with it unleashed even more animals from their cages. This place would be a mad house soon. It would be best to just get the heck out.
Now that the girl realized just how dangerous Cosmina was she cowered on the ground. The girl even begged forgiveness and begged Cosmina not to shoot. This toy just wasn't fun at all. Cosmina shook her head, dislodging more tears from her slowly clearing eyes.
"You need to learn to control that, kid. You'd be a lot more effective if you did."
The kid hadn't asked for the critique but Cosmina felt like giving it anyway. If the girl was foolish enough to let herself be drawn into a fight with an unknown adult then she needed to be either better at fighting or much mire level-headed.
"Good job on the pepper spray though. Handy for someone your age who can't really fight."
Whoever had given the girl the pepper spray had been fairly intelligent.
Cosmina had no time to taunt the girl again. She seemed to be gearing up for another blast. The child just didn't seem to learn. However Cosmina's mutation interacted with the girl's saw to it that the blasts were weakened enough for her to withstand. Did she really think another would do anything? Though, on the bright side, the blast had scared the lions off. That alone was good. Now they were the other patrons' problem.
The little girl's arms came forward in what looked like another blast and Cosmina stood confident. Then she noticed the bottle in the girl's hand. It was too late to do much other than minimize the damage. Cosmina ducked under the spray and rolled to the side. Her eyes burned from the peppery assault and so did the skin around them. However she couldn't let them shut. Some vision was better than none. Cosmina forced her eyes to stay open, raising one hand to wipe away the tears that were welling up quickly.
Mina raised her gun and pointed it in what she assumed was the girl's direction. It was hard to tell through the tears that she just couldn't get rid of.
"Try that again kid and I won't hesitate to kill you where you stand."
Interesting the girl might be and Cosmina was the one that had started the fight. However there was no way she was going to allow a small child to best her with pepper spray. It was just not going to happen.
Mina ignored Sam's comment about her choice of beverage. As he sat Cosmina casually gave the other patrons a quick once over to see if there was anyone who might possibly end up being trouble. No one stood out so she returned her attention to her drink partner just in time for him to make a comment that essentially amounted to him trying to see if she was single. Her mouth curved into yet another smirk.
"If you wanted to know if I'm single all you had to do was ask."
She raised one shoulder in a shrug and noted the approach of a waitress with an expression that definitely wasn't happy. Mina wondered briefly why the woman looked so annoyed but didn't really care. She waited to finish her response until after Sam had praised her once again for her bravery in front of a gun.
"And yes, I am single."
Boyfriends were a simple waste of time at best and an active threat to one's health at worst. Why bother?
"I've been on the wrong end of a gun barrel enough to know that panicking only helps make you dead quicker."
Of course more often she'd observed that in her victims rather than having to undergo it herself but the statement held regardless of which end of the gun she'd learned it from.
Well this was an interesting situation. Cosmina was now caught between a little girl that could essentially blow things up and a bunch of lions. Between and explosion and a sharp place if you would. Other people were running and screaming and it would have been wise for the two females to do the same. Wisdom could wait. It was possibly one of her more foolish moves but she was giving priority to finding more about the girl's mutation and just how much her own mutation would affect the blast.
Eventually the girl got up. Upon seeing that Cosmina had not been knocked down the girl ran at her. Cosmina brought her silencing back up. Unless the girl got so close they were practically hugging she probably wouldn't end up close enough to notice the field at all. She was keeping it close to her so as to not give away the reason why the girl's blasts weren't having the intended effect. She stopped right in front of Cosmina and loosed another attack. This one was weaker than the previous blast by a considerable amount. It would have forced her back just a little bit if she hadn't had her silencing up but with it it felt like a normal push.
The only reason Cosmina could think of for using a less powerful blast than before that made any sense at all was that the girl couldn't control the power level. Mina smirked.
The second the girl brought her arms forward Cosmina braced herself for the blast that she knew would be coming. The hand that had been inside her purse grasping her gun was withdrawn so that the weapon was out in the open. While she disengaged the safety on the handgun Cosmina pulled up a silencing field focus on herself. She couldn't be sure that it would do anything to the blast that would be coming her way in a moment or two but it couldn't hurt to try it.
The blast shot forward. It was obvious the girl had aimed the the entire blast at her instead of the area attack she'd unleashed previously. If that was the same amount of energy she'd used in the area attack Cosmina was in trouble. Instinctively she moved out of the way of the blast as quickly as possible. It barreled through her silencing field and hit her side but with less force than she'd expected. Though Cosmina was spun around and knocked off balance she managed to remain standing. That side would be bruised and painful for a while but seemed intact for the most part. The fencing of the enclosure behind her though? It wasn't so lucky. The blast had hit it and it hadn't had the benefit of Cosmina's power to protect it. It was essentially demolished.
If that was anything to go by then the girl's blasts seemed to be at least partially made up of sound. If that were the case then her power could dampen it's effectiveness. Cosmina grinned. A fight that had looked like a bit too much merely moments before was now looking doable. Mina dropped the silencing around herself.
"What's the matter girl? No one taught you how to aim?"
Cosmina shot the woman a coy smirk as she finally granted her a bit of ground. What did she want to know? Well...since she asked.
"To start with I'd settle for your name and why you turned him down."
That was a good place to start. As good as any other anyway. There was always a chance that she would simply refuse to tell Mina anything and tell her to get lost like she had the man. Since the bartender was there Cosmina let him refresh her drink as well.
"My name's Cosmina by the way."
Introducing yourself first generally helped. It made others more likely to share, in theory at least.
