The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The samurai watched as Malachi's arm went flying and turned, aiming her blade point towards him yet again. However it proved to be unnecessary as the holy warrior met a bloody demise at the end of one of the Aura's pink-colored constructs. As the man struggled to manage against the bodily damage he wasn't feeling, Niko heard a shot ring out and immediately snapped her attention to Ez. There was a scream and her attention flipped back to Malachi, and the shattered holy symbol on the ground. Blood and screams of pain filled the air as Malachi fell over and Niko breathed in relief.
There was Aura, who commented and greeted her. Her reputation was well known so the bloody samurai had stay her sword, after all they did work together to stop a common threat. A nod was probably the most Aura would get from Niko, as there were clearer bigger fish that the samurai sought to skewer.
Straighten a little, Niko turned to the locked woman and marched up to her. Glaring at Agatha through her demonic mask, she hissed as the woman was being slapped by Lenna's abilities. Glaring at her, Niko pulled her sword free once again and pointed the end of it unapologetically under the supreme's chin, drawing a trickle of blood.
"I'm only going to ask once..." She said. "I am no X-Man. I have no moral qualm with slitting your throat and neither does that woman there, nor of putting a bullet through your skull." She nicks the woman's chin a little deeper. "We are everything that you believe mutants to be. Demons. Now..." She says as she leans in real close, eyes flashing red. "Where did the Man of Shadows and the Unmaker go and what is their plan?"

She struggled to help the vigilante to her feet and glared at the blessed woman. She knew that woman was the key to finding the Man of Shadows but first it appeared she would have to get past her bodyguard. A feat that she was more than willing to undertake, given how weakened he now looked. Sword up and at the ready, she was about ready to charge when she heard the woman mention that the cross around the old woman's neck was her focus, a source of power. The samurai grinned under her demonic mask she looked between her and the weakening bodyguard.
Another man spoke up. One she vaguely recognized and found herself irritated by it. He was lucky to be on their side, otherwise she would have had no issue with cutting them stem to stern.
Then the other, Lenna, spoke up. Oh, she could certainly provide an arm if that was needed. Gently she shoulder of Ez, hoping she could stand on her own two feet. Once she had, Niko whispered to her. "Keep the gun on the woman," she said. "I believe the rest of us will handle the other."
Flicking her sword and squatting a bit low, Niko eyed the weakened Malachi and scoffed under her breath. He was an amateur, not a true warrior. A devout zealot and nothing more. She waited until the movements happened from the others before Niko suddenly launched herself forward. Pumped up by the blood her sword had spilled, Niko ran harder, faster than most and roared at the holy warrior before her. At his pitiful lashing of whatever weapon he had left, Niko turn, spun, and swiped her sword with all the ferocity she could muster...
...and watched as Malachi's foolish cost him something dearly...his own arm.

The armored samurai narrows her eyes and keeps her blade poised and pointed forwards the Third Supreme, otherwise known to her over the centuries as the Man of Shadows. It was him that had possessed and killed her husband so long ago so she had sworn a vendetta against him. It was a promise that has carried through the last 700 years and not one she was going to relinquish anytime soon. All she needed was the bastard to stop being a coward. But, deep down, that was what he was, wasn't he?
Moving forward slowly, Niko ignores the surrounding pandemonium, her eyes locked onto her target. She can hear a few works from the Unmaker and the Blessed, the cries from the insect woman and vigilante she'd seen and worked with before. But most are merely background sounds, noises to be ignored as she focused entirely on her target and his twisted words.
The insect falls, as does the vigilante. The Blessed is harmed and the Unmaker is self-satisfied. But the Man of Shadows...he was mocking her. Showing her his true visage for only a moment before turning to grab the Unmaker and wishing her goodbye. Niko's mouth falls open as she roars and begins to charge. She wouldn't let him escape again. She couldn't let him escape again. But, alas, even as she draws a shuriken to hurl towards him, it merely sails through the empty air where his non-existent heart had been moments ago.
Niko roars in defiance, angered beyond all belief. Once again the bastard slips by her notice...but his comrades were nearby. Her head sharply turns as he focused on the Blessed, the woman pummeling a downed girl trying desperately to survive. For a brief moment the samurai turns to the fallen, starved looking vigilante and kneels by her.
"You. You must get up. There is still..." She stops when another of the attuned mystics, seeming now weaker than before, tries to charge at Niko. Quickly she stands, dodging around and blocking his slopping swipes with an ancient looking axe. Catching the handle with her blade, she curls it over in circles but suddenly swiping it away and driving her sword through his chest. Kicking him off, she looks back down to the vigilante. "Move! I need your help to stop the Blessed before the Third escapes!"

Moving around the towering man, the bloody samurai spun and turned, her blade sweeping through the open air and catching the emboldened warrior wherever she could. She couldn't get close to a solid hit, the minor ones were all she needed. Each time her blade cut, blood was pulled out, seeping down the blade and into her flesh. Each time it happened, Niko converted it, either to strengthen her armor, to sharpen her blade, or to heal her own wounds. One after another after another, for every dent her armor took or every bruise earned, Niko would counter it with another cut. She had been fighting evil for centuries and she wasn't about to be stopped by this behemoth anytime soon.
With an audible growl she charged but dropped low, slashing out with her sword to cut through the man's ankle. Any other blade would have been met with resistance, but Niko poured more of her converted lifeforce into the sword to make the edge sharper than imaginable. So with a surge of energy she ran the blade through, easily cutting through the man. As he toppled, howling into the air, Niko turned to see Aura as she challenged the mystic wreathed in fire. She had heard of Malachi before this, a mutant from years ago. He had been arrested before he was converted by these mad men. Taking her sword up, she readied herself to join the fight when a familiar voice echoed across the clearing.
Man of Shadows...eyes narrowed, she turned to face across the field where she spotted him, another of the "Supremes". Of course that was the mask he was wearing these days. Grinning under her demonic visage, Niko lifted her sword and pointed the blade to him. "I have chased you throughout time, Man of Shadows..." She says darkly. "What made you think this moment would be any different? Have you finally decided to accept your end?" She flicked her blade, taking on a combat pose. "For I am ready to deliver you to it myself."

These Mystics were evil. That was the only thing that mattered to the timeless, bloody samurai. She had spent millennia doling out her particular brand of justice, to all those who deserved it. And this lot deserved it.
She didn't particularly play well with the X-Men. Their brand of non-lethal justice was flawed. But Niko still wasn't going to stand by and let them suffer. Especially not against these foes.
Moving through the tree, the red samurai is fairly unseen as she slips between shadows, drawing ever closer to the danger. Plants move and grab at her but a swipe of her katana is enough to end the threat. Then, she hears the commotion. Battle has come.
A few of the glowing mystics, one sheathed in floating rocks and the other, towering and muscle bound, try to get around the other heroes in the clearing to flank them. Cowards.
Leaping out from the shadows, she appears like a crimson demon. Blade arching overhead, she slashes directly for Rocks, slipping between the floating stones and stabbing through his heart. The other, however, is quicker than he seems and lands a punch on Niko as she pulls her sword from the others body.
"What!? Another X-Man!?" He growls.
Niko winces, feeling her armor concave slightly against the overly powerful punch. She stumbles a bit, exposed now to the others but little caring as he hefts up her sword.
"I am no X-Man," she growls in response and then charges, blade flashing in the light.
Niko had said her piece. To be fair she wasn’t expecting a big response from A.J. He was essentially used by two rich people and if literary tropes had taught her anything, it was an unappreciated abuse of the less-than-wealthy. Niko had used him as a means of entertainment while Nat had used him for some sick attempt at humiliation. A.J. was a good man and deserved better than that.
He had every right to shout, scream, and snap at her with every name in the book. Had that been his path, Niko would have merely closed her eyes and accepted it.
But that wasn’t what happened.
Niko continued to look ahead, one leg draped over the over as she listened. He admitted that Nat had a hand in it but at the end of the day, it was his decision to follow through with it. He could have very well decided not to embarrass her, but he had. And it was that decision that he was taking responsibility for.
In all her centuries of existence, she could count on her hand the number of times she had seen people act with such maturity. It seemed that A.J. was making it a point to impress her time and again; the thought of which brought a small smile to her lips.
”Same,” she said with a nod. ”So...here we are...two selfish people...sitting in a park.” After a brief pause, a grin cracked her lips as she finally turned to look at him. ”Why don’t we start over?” she asked. She then offered her hand. ”My name is Melissa Kobayashi...” another momentarily pause. ”...but you can call me Niko.”
There was...a lot happening. Niko didn’t know how all these people ended up here but it seemed, for the most part, like they were all here for the same reason:
The young mother and her child (who seemed nigh indestructible) wanted to kick ‘triangle butt’ and ‘bust these bitches’.
The alien motorcyclist apparently had history with the Triad (whether this one or another, she didn’t know) but was also extremely distracted by the dumpster diver.
Speaking of...the man in the dumpster, sporting similar attire to the other two blondes, apparently wanted in, so long as it got them out of his alley.
Really, the only person who seemed fairly competent was the cloaked woman with the unmistakable figure. She spoke the lingo and seemed to have a better focus when compared to the others. As he approached, Niko gave her a nod before she turned back to the others.
Six bodies. Options. That’s what they certainly had. Shifting her red armor, her face covered by the demon mask, she seemed to consider their options carefully. Her intel had hinted that one of the sources of shipments were coming through here. But she was still compiling the last bit of data she had received from her informant.
”Last intel I had said that a shipment was getting ready to come into New York through this harbor…” she said. Then, there was a ding. Pulling her burner phone from the leather pouch on her belt, she looked it over with her red eyes and continued. ”Also through the streets a few blocks down. So…” DING!. She shook her head and checked her phone again. She cursed in Japanese and slipped her phone back into her pouch. She took a moment before she related the news. ”And via drone down the block the other direction.”
Another silent curse fell. She was screwed. Her intention had been to stop them all of it from reaching the city but she had only received the harbor intel. Now that the rest of the encrypted data had been downloaded, the full plan had been revealed. They were making landfall on multiple fronts, to be cautious. There was no way she could hit them all on her own.
Her eyes drifted back to the cloaked woman and the rest of the motley crew. They weren’t alone. There was enough of them. If they could focus, they could actually pull this off. She hated trusting others but...so be it.
”Okay, here’s the deal,” she said addressing all of them. ”The Triad are delivering shipments in three separate ways: via the harbor here...a block over in a series of unmarked vans, and another block over in the opposite direct via drones. If we split into three groups, we should be able to stop all of them at once.” She looked between all of them. ”If you’re really here to stop them...we’re going to have to work together. Are you all willing to do this?” She asked. ”And if so...where do you want to go? Land, sea, or air?”
Why was she here? Why was she continuing to torture this poor man. Truth be told, Niko didn’t know why. He had been a thorn in her side since she met him while dressed as the Samurai. He was stubborn that entire night, put himself in unnecessary risk, and practically cursed her name. Then, after she had thrown a party as a sort of apology, he turned around and spilled wine down the front of her dress, in front of cameras.
And now he refused to even look at her or offer any kind of apology. Rather he...brought up a damn good point as to why he should be annoyed -- and she deflated. It was a reminder as to why she was here in the first place and why she put so much effort to track him down.
Leaning back against the bench, she took back the magazine and folded it up on her lap. After a long pause she pulled off her sunglasses, stared ahead and replied with, ”I’m sorry.” A pause. ”It wasn’t my intention to pull you into a ‘stupid game’. Those kinds of events can be...boring. And you were a welcome distraction.”
Great. She made it sound like she used him even more. She shook her head, against chastising herself for even caring what this guy thought of her. He was an EMT. A Stubborn one at that. And yet all she wanted to do was apologize to him.
”I...also know why you did it,” she confessed. ”Wasn’t hard to make the connection that Nat Pagel put you up to it because you trying to help me win my other stupid game.” She finally looked to him and lowered her gaze, offering a slight bow of her head. ”I am truly sorry you got pulled into it. That wasn’t fair of either of us to treat you that way. You deserve better.”
It was probably the best shot of the photographer’s career. Melissa Kobayashi was known as a bit of a party girl so whenever she was out and trying to do anything with a bit of class, there were always those waiting for some kind of slip up. So far there had been the standard fare: drunk, public smooching, etc., but nothing really tawdry. No upskirt or wardrobe malfunctions. The tabloids were just waiting for that next big photo to knock Red Pearl Publishing’s princess off the top rung.
And it happened -- all thanks to a clumsy EMT driver. Though he was credited (as ‘Anonymous’), it was his spilled drink and the transparency-like effect it had on Melissa Kobayashi’s dress that evening that grabbed the headlines.
There, on the front page of some of the trashier magazines, was Niko, or rather a perky, pointed part of Niko that had gotten wet by accident.
A certain EMT needed to be found. Luckily, Niko had the right contacts and the right sway to find this particular man who seemed to just continuously vex her. It was time that they had a little chat.
The park was quiet for this time of the day. A red, business suit-clad Niko strolled down the concrete path, her eyes roaming the surrounding area. There were joggers, children playing, and artists who attempted to look deep as they sat beneath trees with charcoal pencils in their hands.
But these weren’t whom she was after. Thankfully, she came across that target not long after, sitting at a bench with a large textbook opened up on his lap. Niko watched him for several moments. After asking around, his colleagues had informed her that he would more than likely be found at the park, studying for nursing school. It certainly appeared that was what he was doing.
Without further delay, the immortal walked towards the bench, her heels clicking on the pavement. Silently she slipped into the seat next to him and planted a tabloid magazine on his book, directly on the chapter he was reading -- it was her picture.
”Not a bad picture of me,” Niko said with a sigh. ”Have to admit, my makeup was fairly on point that night.”
Niko had danced this dance before. There were a few times over the centuries where she took on the persona of someone wealthy and more often than not, they required times where she would have to play host. But she didn’t know why, there was just something more annoying about it in the modern age. The lies, the shameless attempts at self-promotion, they were exhausting to say the least. But, such was the persona she was living with now and therefore, it was her responsibility.
Standing at the table, she flashed her practiced smile, waved, shook, and posed for pictures. Melissa Kobayashi was such a public figurehead that these were standard practice for her. But for Niko, they were like pulling teeth. For each person that approached, she could see the good ones from the bad. She knew those people who didn’t deserve it would scoff at such money, but those that did would certainly treat it as a gift from the gods.
If only she had enough influence to help those who really needed it.
But, Niko continued on. This was just a part she was playing, after all. None of these people knew the real Niko Kobayashi. Well...save for one -- though he didn’t know it.
After the last handshake, Nico jumped a little at the familiar appearance of the dinner jacket that she had stained and then rescued. Her eyes moved up to that handsome face and Niko felt herself taking a moment. He knew. He had seen the real her that night when she was running about as the Red Samurai, though he didn’t know it was her.
He flashed her a smile, practiced all the same as his, and draped an arm around her for a picture. His words were direct and lifeless. It wasn’t gratefulness like she was expecting, but maybe unfeeling with a tinge of annoyance? Momentarily her smile faltered as the photographer struggled to get his flash working. He was upset by her deception, had to be.
She looked down for a moment before she glanced his way. ”AJ…” she whispered. ”...I’m sorry if I deceived you...but…”
FLASH!!!
The camera whined and flashed her eyes and briefly the only thing Niko could see were the spots and whiteness that burned into her corneas.

[/a] Niko meets a bunch of misfits while tracking down a new criminal element. (Niko/L/Juniper/Elliot/Ez/Zek) [/ul]
A sliver of silver cut through the night air, singing a humming song before it came to a stop. Pointed straight ahead, the blade itself narrowed it’s focus on the face of a young blonde girl, not the target it was expecting, but eager to draw blood nonetheless. When guns were aimed in retaliation, a tension quivered through the sword, readying to go on the offensive and cut down the owner before it was too late. But, as it would appear, there was more yet to come.
And in this case “more” means more people.
Niko was unsure of what to think. Still her sword was held, unwavering as she watched a hoodie-wearing blonde pick up the angry, gun-toting toddler, and hold her off to the side. She peered closed at Niko’s sword, marveling at it but seemingly unbothered by the threat. Were they part of the triad? As stupid as their name was, these two blondes hardly seemed like criminal masterminds.
”Who ar--?” But she couldn’t finish her question.
Casual footsteps coming from the wall drew her attention, slowly. Peering out from behind the demonic mask, her eyes gleamed briefly in the limited light as an alien-mask wearing individual literally walked down the wall towards them. He addressed her casually, referring to her as “Red” before he leapt a few feet away, landing with an acrobat’s skill at his feet.
And then he said it. Vigilantes. It didn’t seem as if he were working for the triad either, or even one of the local gangs. What on earth was going on here? Did every self-proclaimed vigilante in the area just decide to show u--
Interrupted. Again. This time a woman rode in on a gust of wind and landed with the crowd. She surmised that none of them were part of the Triad and guessed that this was a mistaking gathered group of some kind. She sighed. There was a reason she worked alone as all this was getting far too complicated.
”No…” she said. She looked at the woman before shifting her attention back to the alien and the two blondes. ”...I’m not Triad.” It didn’t seem that the rest of them were either. Annoying, maybe, but these weren’t criminals, no matter how mob-like the youngest dressed. She gestured to the blonde as she peered at her from behind her mask. ”You make it a habit of handing your kid firearms?” she asked.
A loud knock came from a nearby dumpster. She turned, drawing her sword again -- and once again found herself looking at an oddity. A young man popped out from the inside, seemingly confused as to what was going on -- and then started to shout at the toddler.
Niko’s eyebrow…rose. She then grumbled
”Everyone needs to settle down,” she growled. ”Listen, I don’t know if you all are here for the same reason, but there’s intel of a major criminal event about to happen that needs to be stopped.” Once more her sword was sheathed as she deemed those gathered to no longer be dangerous. ”If you do not want to be involved, I suggest you leave now. Things will get ugly quite fast.”
This was unfortunate. Niko didn’t mean to be so brash with AJ, given that he had been such a good sport so far. But she also couldn’t skirt her responsibilities for this event. She had appearances to keep, after all. But was it worth hurting a perfectly innocent man whom she had dragged into this nonsense. She didn’t know why she played along with the game, nor why she roped him into it. Maybe she just wanted to have a little fun at this normally boring-as-all-hell event.
That wasn’t responsible. Shaking her head, she left AJ behind but still her thoughts were with him as she marched through the crowd, waving as a spotlight encapsulated her in an aura of blinding light. AJ, like the rest of the crowd, disappeared into a sea of shadowy faces.
”Thank you, thank you all so much,” Niko said with her well-practiced smile. Standing behind the podium, she gestured gratefully to the MC before she took her place behind the podium and turned to face the eager crowd of medical workers. ”It’s easy to write a check. But it takes real heroism to meet people at their lowest and most terrified and do whatever you can to bring them back into the light. And that is what this event is all about, honoring you brave, intelligent, amazing souls who go out into the grind every day and heal the wounded and the sick. Though money cannot fix all problems, it my, and Red Pearl Publishings, absolute pleasure to offer you all our thanks.”
After saying her piece, there was a general applause from the audience. Most of the medical personnel seemed touched by her words; while those who were simply there for good PR responded with measured applause. Just enough to blend in with the crowd, but not enough to truly understand why these professionals were being honored. It was a sad sight to see. But, that was not why they were here, Niko thought firmly.
She turned to her security detail and watched as they stepped forward with several baskets and bins laden with envelopes. The checks. They had been closely guarded to ensure that there would be no tampering. Once they were at Niko’s side, they placed them on a table in front of her while photographers started to set up around her. Once everything was laid out, Niiko turned back to the microphone.
”Once again, a gracious thank you to you all. If everyone will please line up,” she said, gesturing to the table in front of her. ”We’ll start passing out the checks.”
Vainly her eyes searched the darkened, shuffling crowd for AJ. Maybe she could snag him afterwards to explain. Huh, would he allow her to? She put him through hell tonight, it seemed. She was feeling more and more awful by the second so she kept her eyes open as the first mass medical professionals approached her table. She handed them a check, shook their hands, smiled for the camera, and offered her genuine thanks before moving on to the next in line.
The rumors were out there. The signs were available. However it was only seen by those who knew what to look for. A symbol here. An illogical conversation there. It would take months for any local authorities to be able to decipher the cryptic messages and by the time they did, the cypher would be replaced by yet another kind of codex and thus knocking everyone back to square one. Even the X-Men, for all their brilliance and showboating in the pursuit of justice, had not been able to catch onto the movements of the Treacherous Triad in time.
And tonight was the night.
Sly Fox, Deep Blue, and Swift Gold, three up-and-coming mutant criminals had devised a plan. They would be establishing a foothold in New York City, the mecca of all mutant activity. And their means of doing so was quite brilliant. For weeks now their most trustworthy associates have been moving through the streets, looking for anyone and everyone who would help expand their budding empire.
One by one they set roots in the streets and alleyways. Avoiding the careful eye of the already established criminal Syndicate, slipping past the view of the X-Men and the police, the seeds were planted and began to germinate. All they needed now was one more ingredient to make the process complete: inventory.
Sly Red, the smartest and most cunning of the trio, had managed to use connections through Deep Blue to get their hands on some high grade weaponry. With Swift Gold, his talents were able to procure them a rather large stock of narcotics to start buying their way into the heart of the city. Everything was going according to his plan.
“Good,” Sly Red grinned as he looked at the map of New York. “We’re all set. Deep Blue,” he said as he pointed to a dark-skinned woman with a shaved head. “You and your aquatic friends will guard the shipments coming in via the harbor.”
Deep Blue nodded, holding up a hand and causing a swirl of spikey water to swirl. “Not a problem. Ain’t no one coming near ‘em.”
Sly Red nodded. He then turned to Swift Gold, a man with copper skin and gold eagle feathers sprouting from his shoulders, extended outward into wings along his back. “Gold. We set?”
“Hmph. As if there was doubt,” he grumbled. “I’ll be escorting the drones personally. Shipments will hit their spots with no issue. Guarantee.”
Red smirked. “Good. And I’ll be bringing in the last shipment through a series of unmarked vehicles to their designated points. By this time tomorrow…” The redheaded fox grinned, looking between each of them, “...New York won’t know of hit ‘em.”
***
Niko Kobayashi had followed the breadcrumbs. Those little hints of information that let her know something big was happening tonight. Her centuries of hunting the Man of Shadows had given her a clue into the mindset of her target, and all those who committed such acts of evil. Years of dispensing justice had allowed her a certain foresight when it came to understanding the signs whenever something big was going to happen, and Niko had managed to catch them just in time.
A move was being made on New York City. A new criminal organization known as the Treacherous Triad (horrible name) was supposedly cementing their foothold in New York. Sadly that was where her intel had ended. All she knew was that they were coming into the city with shipments but what and how, she was unsure. She had an idea that it wouldn’t be anything good and she would find out the rest as she proceeded.
Standing in the shadows of a dark alley, the red plated armor of the Bloody Samurai stood in waiting. Hand already resting on the hilt of her sword, she peered through the demonic facemask and waited for any signs of what was to come. Her intel had informed her that in this street closest to the docks, that one of the lower level thugs was supposed to be in this area.
He would have the information she wanted -- and she would extract it from him by any means necessary.
However, as Niko lay in wait, her muscles tense, the armor silent, she heard the sound of another approaching. But it wasn’t for the correct location. It was from somewhere behind her. With a deep, slow breath, Niko waited for another moment before she moved with speed that seemed unlikely in her armor. The red samurai whipped around, drawing her blade and pointed it firmly at the one who attempted to approach her.
Tonight had turned out to be just a little more fun than she was anticipating. Not because she was looking to have a miserable time. She knew that what she was doing here was a good thing. She was honoring those men and women and everyone in-between who were dedicating their lives to helping others. It was an endeavor that was near and close to Niko’s heart. But what she didn’t care for was the hobnobbing with those putrid individuals who were only showing up to get some good PR to shield their disgusting habits.
She took a settling breath. As much as she wanted to feel that rage swell up inside of her chest, she knew that she couldn’t get carried away. She needed to maintain her control. though she may not be able to hunt those kinds of criminals down the same way she hunted others, she would ensure that their lives would go to hell one way or the other.
But such thoughts were now in the back of Niko’s mind. What was taking a more important part was the gentleman that stood before her. He really was handsome, now that she was looking upon him with her own eyes and not those of the samurai. If anything at least she got to see, first hand, that her money was going to someone worthy of it.
AJ seemingly came out of his own thoughts and inquired if she had won the scavenger hunt. Momentarily she forgot about the whole subterfuge she had invented to keep him entertained, and stumbled. A few sounds passed her pursed lips as she mentally went through a made-up list in her head. Finally she nodded with confirmation.
”Ugh, yeah,” she said. ”Looks like I win for tonight. Go Team Us.” She offered him one of her rare, genuine smiles and then cleared her throat. That was enough of that.
Niko glanced at the expensive watch on her wrist. It really was time to get this function underway. Most of the people here had waited long enough and surely wanted to spend their hard-earned time off getting some extra rest at home or preparing for their next shift. Why not give them another extra gift of hurrying-the-****-up so they could get going?
AJ seemed to be on the same wavelength and inquired who it was that was supposed to be passing out the checks. Shyly she smiled again, looking away as she set her glass down on the bartop.
”Oh, yeah, about that…” she said as he started to scan the crowd. It was at that moment that the MC stepped up to the podium and tapped the microphone.
“Hello, everyone! Can you hear me okay?” His voice echoed through the crowd. He was an older man, with white hair, dark skin, and a salt-and-pepper beard. His glasses glinted in the light as he spoke to everyone. “I want to thank you all you amazing professionals for coming out to this event. We here at Red Pearl Publishing want to thank you for all your amazing hard work and hope that this small shindig is at least a partial glimpse of our gratitude. But, of course, we all know that there’s another side to this that you are all far more eager to hear about. For that we turn to the organizer of this event…”
Niko winced.
“...Melissa Kobayashi!”
Niko sighed and took a deep breath as a spotlight searched through the room before finally landing on her. Glancing to AJ she gave him a small shrug. ”I...guess that would be me. Lovely to meet you.” She began to step forward as the crowd raised their glasses and applauded their suddenly revealed benefactor.
