The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

“Weird mutant stuff would mean that he knows where we are, or followed us and we don’t know it yet. Or something like that, because he has a power we don’t know about. Like, uh…”
Here was a mind game Kaitlyn played on occasion: how many superpowers could she think of which a person could use to do something ‘impossible’? “He could have some kinda long-range ESP, so he’d be able to track us without actually needing to follow us.” There’s one possibility. “He could turn into a ghost and fly after us invisibly.” Two. “He could be an animal-shifter who turned into something fast enough to chase us that we didn’t notice.” Three. “He coulda read our minds from a distance and figured out where you were taking us.” Four. “He might still be reading our minds and know where we are ‘cause of that.” Five. She was listing these off so quickly that Sylar wouldn’t have had a chance to get a single word in.
“He could have, uh… well, I could go on. Lots of weird mutant stuff could happen. It prolly won’t, though.” She shrugged, then started rummaging through her backpack. Maybe her recordings would give her a clue about the assassin’s power. “But it’d be suicide for him to make a move on us at the Sanctuary.”

“Basically, one time I started to blow something up every time I hiccupped. And uh…” What was the best way to put this?
“I get into fights with people who are being jerks. Gabriel was an idiot picking on some kid for some idiot reason. It just… it pisses me off to see a mutant picking on another mutant like that, you know?” She was starting to sound defensive. “The rest of the world hates us enough. We don’t need to make things worse for ourselves like that.”
At times, Kaitlyn felt like the school administration disapproved of her decisions to injure certain students solely because those administrative types had a personal problem with her. At least she wasn’t so far gone that she actually believed that; it just felt that way, sometimes. But, for example, the DocProf didn’t even seem even slightly sympathetic to her position. Didn’t that guy ever want to hurt someone else over something like this? Or did he have a mutation that allowed him to survive without a spine?

“…Wish I knew,” She shrugged. “I didn’t think that would happen. I don’t even know if that guy would want to kill us off. I mean, we’re witnesses, but he threw that one guy out the window. But, uh…”
Kaitlyn sat in silence for while. “…He probably doesn’t know I was spying on them.” She concluded. “And it was too far away for him to see what we look like, if he has normal eyes. So I guess it’s not a huge deal. Unless weird mutant stuff happens.” It felt nice, realizing how unlikely it was that somebody was going to try to kill her after all that excitement.
...She hoped Sylar wouldn't be mad at her for getting him all worked up about this.

Kaitlyn eyed Sylar suspiciously. Or at least, she eyed his silhouette, that shadow which she could only detect because it was moving. Why was he suggesting that she rest? So she would let her guard down? Because she wasn’t going to let her guard down.
This apartment could really use some light. Light would make it a lot less difficult to catch her off guard. While Sylar was doing whatever-a-sewer-monster-does in the bathroom, she felt along the walls until she found a light switch. Then, she made sure all the blinds and curtains were blocking anyone outside from looking in. She knew from experience how easy it was to see into a lit room through a window at night.
Once she was satisfied, she sat on the sofa. She needed to rest for a bit after running like that.

No key? Kaitlyn shouldn’t have been even a little surprised. If Sylar had a legitimate claim to this apartment, he wouldn’t be living in the sewers, now, would he? She shrugged. At least he knew it was open, and they weren’t going to spend the night in the sewers.
The apartment was dark. Kaitlyn could barely tell whether there was any furniture in it. “You know if there’s a bed in here?” A couch would be fine too… If she wanted to let her guard down and possibly get eaten. Maybe that wasn’t a thing she wanted to do. “Actually, never mind. I don’t need sleep.”

“Hmm…” Kaitlyn rubbed her chin, allowing the symbolism and poetic devices of the story to wash over her.
“So, which one of them do you think was the mutant? The mom, or the kid?”
If symbolism was like like water, Kaitlyn’s mind was like a sieve. It needed solid, factual chunks to grasp. All else simply fell through, ignored, unappreciated. She preferred nonfiction. The real world didn’t use allegory or metaphor to get its points across. Stuff happened, and people did stuff about it.
Kaitlyn wanted to know who did what stuff in this true story Lenna was telling her.

“It’s fine,” she said, still catching her breath. “I bet we lost him, right?” She chuckled nervously. As uncomfortable as the experience was, not getting caught was the important part.
Now that that danger was behind them… was this really a good idea? This ‘Sylar’ guy was pretty sketchy. He threatened her to get food from her. He admitted that he sometimes wanted to eat people. Now, he was taking her to an abandoned apartment. The whole thing was her idea, sure… but what if he had ulterior motives for helping her? What if he was just playing along so that, once she was sleeping…
Kaitlyn got to her feet and made her way up the fire escape. She had a good poker face for someone her age.

“Were you here for the hiccup incident? Or that time I gave Gabriel a concussion?” The incident with Gabriel happened a few months earlier. The 15-year-old boy was a jerk, and the concussion did good a lot of good things for his personality. Plus, the time she spent in detention helped her catch up on that book about socialism.
“I kinda deserve it. Still sucks though.”

“Let’s try the apartment,” she said hastily, barely allowing him to finish his sentence. “No offense.”
An abandoned apartment was good enough, assuming they could lose his trail before they got there. Which might be a problem, if this was that guy with that impossible-to-pronounce Aztec codename. Nobody associated with the Order actually knew what kind of power he had, or even if he had one; they only knew that he worked for the Mexican cartels, he visited New York occasionally, he was really, really, really good at killing people, and he did not like the Order.
Within half a minute, Kaitlyn was almost out of breath. She had been going at a full sprint, and now she was running out of energy. They probably had a long way still to go until they reached that apartment.

“Uh… well…” That might not have come out right.
“I mean, it sucks when I lose control of it and blow stuff up on accident. And, uh…” She was about to mention the part where her power left her without parents. But she wasn’t sure if that was a bad thing, in her case. She also didn’t want to tell this guy about her biological parents. Kaitlyn opted to let the rest of that sentence drift away.
“But on the other hand, it’s prolly the only reason I survived being homeless.” Hating the power that saved her life so many times would seem… ungrateful, almost. “So I guess what I really hate is other people. I mean, the way they act because of it. You know?”

“I… don’t know.”
That was probably an important detail. Kait had been too focused on getting far away from there to plan that far ahead. “I guess we could go to the Sanctuary…” But that was kinda far away. Especially if they didn’t take the subway, and Sylar seemed like he would object to taking the subway. “Unless you can think of somewhere better.”
She hoped his suggestion wouldn’t involve sewers.

“Being a mutant is so great, right?” She nudged him with her elbow, voice dripping with sarcasm. Kaitlyn really could see how much it could suck to live with that.
Meanwhile, she had to reassess everything she thought she knew about this kid. For example, because he was actually older than she was, he definitely wouldn’t be open to the idea of becoming her honorary little brother. Dreams destroyed. Plus, being an older kid boarding at Xaviers’ was a much less tragic position to be in, on average, than a seven-year-old boarding there. He might have even had parents who cared about him!
He was starting to look a lot less like he needed sympathy, involuntary age shifting aside.

You may have noticed that I have been very inactive lately. This is because I'm a Molecular Biology major in uni. I'm not telling anyone anything new; this hasn't really stopped being a thing at any point since I started doing that whole uni thing more than a year ago. However, things have been especially busy, and I've been trying to focus a lot more than usual on my coursework, which honestly isn't a bad thing in general, but is bad for my MRO activity levels in particular.
I'm not going to make any apologies, nor any non-vague promises about future activity levels.

Kaitlyn released her death grip on Sylar’s torso, legs shaking a little after her feet returned to the ground. That was faster than the stairs, which was the important thing. Plus, she didn’t die on the way down; also a good thing. She took a deep breath.
“If that’s who I think it is,” Kaitlyn said, voice still shaking, “We should keep running.”
She grabbed for his hand, thinking she would pull him farther along down the alleyway. Instead, she nicked her hand on one of his claws. “Crap! Ow.” That was dumb. “Also, we shouldn’t split up.” Safety in numbers. She hoped she could convince him that he’d be safer staying with her. She’d certainly be safer, that way.
