The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

As much as Praxi wanted to be indignant, Amethyst had a point; she was the party crasher here. As much as the slimegirl disapproved of Amethyst bringing Atlantean nobles to New York, it was her right to do that. Praxi was not the gatekeeper of who could come to the city.
Praxi would have left quicker if not for Carrick starting a fuss and one of the nobles deciding to drag her into it. The comment just reeked of the kind of elitism and judgment typical of high-class Atlanteans. It was an attitude Praxi always loathed, but it was almost laughably out of touch here. She was scared of women like this once upon a time, as crazy as that sounded now.
In Atlantis, Praxi was never docile, but she was cautious. Here, she felt ready to take on the bourgeoisie word for word, but she remembered Amethyst. She had planned all this and seemed to desperately want it to go well. Praxi was the uninvited one here, as much as she hated it. These girls were temporary visitors. To her own surprise, she would try to be the bigger mutant here. ”You’re right. I just wanted to come say hello, but I wouldn’t want to linger and be rude to your guests. Sorry for the trouble, Amethyst.”
The nobles were surprised Praxi would use the Princess’s name, but Praxi was busy being surprised by Carrick’s news. His father, the king? Was he another royal from a different land? Dumbfounded by this revelation, she accepted the glass, holding her form enough not to let it slip through her. She could have just absorbed the whole thing through her arm, but being around so many high-ranking royals got in her head. She raised the glass to her formed lips, letting the fruity, tart, strong liquid pass into her, darkening the color of her head as the deep violet mingled within her. This was surprisingly tasty! And given her lack of a proper system to process it, gave her a pleasant, swimmy feeling.

Why did Amethyst have to do that? She was frustrating but ultimately tolerable, but Praxi thought that was because she was away from the problems of Atlantis. By bringing in more Atlantean nobility, would Amethyst regress back to the terrible person she probably was in the palace?
Praxi tried to be reasonable. Amethyst was her own person and these were her friends. She had the right to invite them to the Mansion. Maybe they would be a better example of “good” nobles than she was giving them credit for. Though Amethyst’s desire to shoo her and Carrick away inspired doubt.
The goo girl would leave, but Carrick caught her off guard with an assumption she had to laugh at. ”No, not quite. That’s… not really how Atlantis worked.” Surface-dwellers really underestimated how bad things were out in the ocean.
Carrick was… interesting. He seemed unphased by anything, even joking that Amethyst was the worst. That, she did find humorous. Unfortunately, the call of Amethyst’s name from a high-pitched voice approaching reminded Praxi that she should have left before it was too late.
The royal friends flocked to Amethyst, wrapping her in hugs. Privileged Atlantean culture was very touchy, from what Praxi remembered. “It’s wonderful to see you. The travel to this place was ghastly; I do not know how you’ve survived in a garish city like this for so long. Truly a trooper.”
Ignoring anyone but Amethyst initially, Carrick’s greeting and questions drew their attention and a flat look of disapproval. “Oh, do the servants here not know proper decorum? What a strange place where gorgons interfere in the affairs demi-gods…”
Another woman laughed, noticing Praxi and eyeing her with disgust. “Clearly they aren’t trained well here. Look at that thing. Clearly not a worker. Go, run off to your gutter, gorgon,” she tutted dismissively.
Praxi boiled, moving closer. ”I’m a she, not an it, and you can’t tell me where to go.”
Another royal scoffed. “Excuse you, please remember your place.”
Before she could get another word out, Praxi shot back, ”This is my place. I live here. You’re the outsider here, remember?” Her dark eyespots fixed defiantly; she would not let a so-called demi-god think they had power here. Not over her, not anymore.

Whoever the male friend hanging around the Princess was, she seemed to dismiss him curtly. Given who Amethyst was, that could mean many things. That was her preferred method of social interaction, as far as she could tell.
According to Amethyst, the man was freeloading, which was a point in his favor. Praxi was fine being an uninvited burden for her fellow Atlantean, so she understood the appeal. He did seem to be distressed by something, causing him to choke on his food. Praxi’s “hot take,” as it were, was that humanoid digestive systems seemed faulty. She was glad she could just ingest and dissolve her food. He did call her esteemed, at least, which made her swirl in approval.
Praxi focused on keeping her hand as solid as possible to avoid leaving traces of herself behind when she accepted the hand with her own formed one. ”Eupraxia. Or Praxi is fine.” She took her hand back, her surface rippling slightly.
Evidently Amethyst was hosting a party for friends, which made Praxi wonder what kind of friends Amethyst would believe warranted a big shindig. Carrick thought she was embarrassed, but Praxi connected the dots and felt a sinking feeling overtake her as she tried not to puddle. ”Wait. Friends like…?”
A vehicle pulled up and young women in familiar outfits walked out. Praxi was vibrating watching the brightly dressed party approach. ”Why are they here?” Well, so much for trying to believe people were generally good, but really—these people?

Praxi was working up her courage. She had bravado, but she needed real courage. She was pretty sure she wanted to be an X-Man. She was also sure she wanted to make friends and be part of this surface world she was carefully appreciating from a distance. Xavier kept reminding her that people were generally good, and she had to remind herself of that, but it was hard; some people made that hard.
The Princess—Amethyst could be a jerk, but the more Praxi was around her, the more it seemed like she was figuring out her own place in a world outside of their bubble. She could be bad, but Praxi was willing to concede she was not the worst. She helped Praxi get Kelyfi back to the Mansion, and while Praxi was not about to say they were friends, she gave the slime girl hope that not even an Atlantean royal was without hope.
Gliding around the campus, enjoying what she was being told would be one of the last good days of warm weather in New York for the year, Praxi noticed the familiar appearance of the royal brat next to a less familiar young man. She had to give it to Amethyst; the girl knew how to be popular.
Taking her normal, humanlike form to avoid surprising Amethyst, (who hated talking to her as a puddle,) Praxi approached. ”Good day! Looks like you’ve put in a lot of work here, which isn’t like you.” It was an observation, not a slight. There was quite a setup in the courtyard, which made her suspicious. ”Unless you tricked this man to setting up a tent for you for… reasons? What are you up to, anyway?”

Amethyst showed no appreciation for Eupraxia’s Disney reference, which made her think the Princess might need a movie night in the near future. Not that Praxi would suggest that, but someone should educate her.
Praxi had her own pet to get excited about, though Amethysts’s reaction made her bubble. ”No eating Kelyfi, Amethyst. You can go find your own sea creature snacks.” Praxi took no issue with eating animals, but she wanted to draw a hard line: her pet was not food for some Atlantean elite. ”And one is fine. I need a companion, not an army.”
The attendant smiled. “And pets require time and attention and effort. Best to start with one, and we can get you set up with food and equipment for Kelyfi. Though… um, young… lady?”
”Yes?”
Glad to not misstep there, they continued. “Right. How will you be taking the tank home with you?”
That… had not occurred to Praxi. Realizing it caused her to deflate. ”I… darnit. I didn’t realize there would be things to carry home.” And just like that, this plan suddenly felt like a short-sighted waste of time. Praxi was the physical picture of disappointment.

There was something annoying about being around good people. They made you want to be good, or maybe they reminded you that you could be good. Xavier was annoyingly infectious in his altruism and it left Eupraxia wondering if she might be meant to keep up the work she did when she was an Atlantean street rat trying to survive.
"Okay golden boy. Or... I mean, your hair is golden, I assume, based on the shade of, er, green." Moving on, failblob. "Maybe saving people gave me a sense of purpose. And maybe I should treating humans like the enemy..."
Xavier was enthused by the prospect of her joining him as a trainee, and he made no effort to contain his praise for Eupraxia's abilities. Something about him complimenting her made her vibrate nervously, her swirling greens darkening. "Oh, um, thank you. I appreciate that. And you are impressive. Your powers," she corrected stiffly. "Maybe when all is said and done, I'll be there to have your back when you go do something goofy and reckless and heroic." She got the vibe he would give her opportunities to do just that if they were going to be the X-Men's newest trainee pair.

Noticing the mouse Amethyst questioned, Praxi admired the small fuzzy rodent. "Aww, it's a cute little mouse. You know, there's one or two of those Disney princesses who sing to mice and birds. Maybe that's something you can do," she teased playfully.
Admittedly, taking care of a pet was going to be a challenge, but one Praxi would work through. She could get a feeder device of some kind, and if the pet had a containment setup, it could limit the trouble. As much as Praxi worried Amethyst's suggestion would be in bad faith, it made sense. "Reptilians," she repeated curiously, inspecting the birds chirping or squawking as they passed. "No shedding, containment unit friendly. That might work! A bird would indeed perch. They also like to preen and demand attention. Might remind me of someone a bit too much." It was easy to want to tease Amethyst, but at least now it did not feel as antagonistic as it was at the Mansion.
Moving toward a series of glass boxes, the reptiles were indeed eye-catching. So many options, so many colors. The choice would be quite difficult! Or so she thought.
"This one. I want this one." At first, she had not known if it was an animal or a prop, but there was a beautiful shell in one of the boxes. It seemed innocuous until the head of a small turtle peeked out of the shell. "I love him."
"That turtle's a girl, actually," mentioned a nearby pet shop employee.
The human did not phase Praxi, as her attention was focused on her new friend. "I love her. I'll call her Kelyfi." It was a silly pun name; in English, it would be the equivalent of calling the turtle Shelly, but it made Praxi vibrate with excitement regardless.

Xavier understood her power; it was something she took advantage of in Atlantis. Guards did not know how to deal with her unique abilities, which encouraged her to get involved when guards harassed kids on the streets.
Maybe Eupraxia was jaded, but she struggled with the notion of nobility for the sake of it. Maybe what she did in Atlantis could be argued as noble, but she saw it as survival. The gorgons were her people, and she was in a position to protect them. If she did not do it, those kids would suffer.
Xavier thought like that, but he was not saving "his people." Or he was, but they were all his people. Mutants, physically mutated, humans. Maybe some of them would be bad. He did not seem to care. In fact, he flipped the question around to Praxi, making her think about what she wanted. "I've... never had to think about that. Most of my life was spent avoiding capture and saving other street kids from getting captured. I... guess I always liked that. Knowing I kept those kids from the Necropolis." Or the terrible things that happened to Celeste. "That always felt like the best way to use my powers. I never thought of using them to save people who weren't... like me." Gods, that sounded awful when she said it like that.
Maybe she had to be willing to involve her beliefs in this new world she was part of now. "Hey Xavier... um... how did you end up as a trainee? You know. Hypothetically, if I was interested, maybe, you know?" Near the end, her mumbling became harder to distinguish, because was she seriously considering this?

Eupraxia did not want to be petty. (She was going to be, but it was not her intention.) There was something satisfying about catching the Princess by surprise. Amethyst often presented herself as unflappable and too important to be phased by Praxi and her nonsense. The pet shop reveal was a genuine moment of having her expectations thrown for a loop. Demigods might have had pets, (some of whom were Gorgons, Praxi thought with a shudder,) but they did not have little shops with pets ready to adopt. Well, purchase-- there was some sort of exchange of goods involved, but she would figure that out when she was done.
"I'm here for an animal companion. The room is just me, and since I'm not... super keen on a roommate, I figured a pet was the right choice." She slipped into the shop, listening to the muffled sounds of birds chirping and dogs barking with her dull hearing. "I think you should get one too, even if I'm not sure a living being deserves to be left in your care." Might do wonders for her empathy.
Looking around at some cats out of their containment, playing with one another, she imagined the scene would be adorable. All Praxi could imagine was the cat hairs floating around her body constantly. "Either way, I would not mind help picking a companion out. Felines are fine, but... I think I'd like to avoid a creature that sheds for obvious reasons."

After the initial surprise of her goo ball shape conceding to the blonde Adonis, he stuck close by, trying to offer help or assistance while she collected enough globules of herself to regain a mostly humanoid form. She was considerably shorter than she was moments earlier, which made Xavier dwarf her, but at least she was not just a defeated bubble.
For someone who defeated her, Xavier was being way too sympathetic. Demigods were never merciful, but she had to accept this well-intentioned musclehead was not a demigod. He was just an enthusiastic young man whose mutation was invisible and who was (annoyingly) undeniably handsome. Maybe she was no better than Amethyst with her assumptions.
Praxi's head swished from side to side. "No, I'm okay. I almost never really feel pain, as you'd know it at least." If she was reduced to her core, that could lead to some agony, but no sense in sharing her weaknesses. She did not trust Xavier that much. "I can just pick up my pieces and if you had really reduced me to... well, if I was too exploded, I would just sort of... go to sleep. And my body would slowly regenerate." Her form had many drawbacks, but she saw that as compensation for being virtually invulnerable.
"It is a cool power you have," she admitted. "I guess there'd be a lot you could do with it. So... well, why be an X-Man of all things? Is saving humans really the thing you'd want to do most?" He could probably be a rich athlete. He would have been praised in Atlantis. If he just wanted praise, why do something that was a greater risk and often for people who did not care about him?
Despite an unfortunately stressful bus ride, the young Atlanteans succeeded in their journey. Praxi paid close attention to the stops, terrified by the notion of leading her and the Princess into the depths of New York with no way back. It was such a relief to have her destination in sight, she was able to ignore odd glances she might be receiving from pedestrians on the sidewalk.
As expected, the princess was out of her element and curious where her gorgon antagonist might be dragging her. Praxi waved for her to follow and led them to a storefront with a colorful sign decorated with cartoon animals, listing "Cosmopawlitan" as the business name.
With a sweeping gesture into the store, the sounds of animals could be heard within. Dogs playing together, cats purring and lounging, and plenty of tanks and small cages for smaller animals. "It's a pet store! They have small animals and you can take them home as companions. I asked Miss Grey and she said pets are allowed," she promised enthusiastically, leading Amethyst inside.
Xavier made no sense. He was so aloof and positive. Did he take anything seriously? Was he not some superhero in the making? That carefree energy and his stupid perfect smile were just so… augh! She should find him more annoying, but she was annoyed because she did not find him as annoying as he clearly was.
Naturally, as the metaphorical dust settled, (they should have really brought dust into the gym for added effect,) Xavier stood as her opposite, alone on the battlefield. Bracing her ball, she anticipated him to make some goofy comment.
She should not have. He was fast. Praxi had the misfortune of needing some setup. She pulled her body back, trying to move as quickly as she could manage to set up her slingshot. The red orb was pulled back, and just before she could release the weapon with full force--
A ball came screaming in and struck her stretched out form. The problem she failed to foresee: she was too stretched. The ball struck her and her body burst into stray slime bits, leaving her red ball to lob harmlessly into the air a few feet until it dribbled on the ground.
What was left of Praxi’s core was little more than enough for her to make a small, beachball-sized ball of goop, retaining her dark green core and two dark green eyes glaring at her vanquisher. The tiny ball deflated a little. ”I… have been bested. Teacher, I am sorry. I think I need some time to collect myself before our next game.” Literally, considering puddles of Praxi dotted the playing field.
Praxi had done such a good job of slinging around a curse at the old jerks, it almost threw her off when she heard the Princess nearly laugh at her. Evidently, she was not expecting Praxi to cross those lines, which was fair, because while the Princess annoyed the slime girl, she still kept words like that off the table. It was the kind of insult a guard would cut a kid’s tongue out for-- well, if she had a tongue.
Being called an it reaffirmed the old man’s status as a skyrva, but for some reason, the younger human stood up and interceded for them. Praxi was not sure, but she might have even seen some kind of badge being flashed, even if she would not recognize it.
The mean people got off the bus after an awkward silence, leaving Praxi and her primary antagonist sitting there as the young man returned to his partner. Amethyst was still shocked by the unnecessary treatment, and Praxi shrugged or made some approximation of a shrugging gesture. ”It’s not like you have a specific problem with Gorgons, right?” Disliking a group for who or what they were wasn’t a specific thing. ”And I don’t leave stains. I’m too thick to seep into things, thanks.”
What was more of a surprise was the young man. ”Um, sir, why did you tell them to leave?” Her watery voice lowered as she asked, ”Are you a mutant, too?”
He smiled, shaking his head. “Nope. Just a human, but that doesn’t mean I have to stand for people being cruel to other people.”
“Especially to kids,” his girlfriend agreed. “That was just rude. I hope you two are okay?”
”Oh. Yes. Thank you.” Eupraxia was still unsure of how she wanted to take the kindness of these humans, so she quietly sat back into the seat and tried to reflect on this while they rode to their stop and their mission for the day.
Other students talked about dancing. They were curious about how different it was growing up in Atlantis, and Praxi tried not to be a total downer by going into painful details. They asked about things she did and did not have, and when a few of them found out she had not danced before, they were shocked. Some joked about making her try it, but Praxi never expected anyone to follow through.
They always talked about how much fun it was to dance with someone, and now Praxi understood what they meant. It was a tingle throughout her body, like an electric spark was bouncing between her and Celeste.
There was so much to distract Praxi, it took her a moment to understood what Celeste’s weak voice meant with her question. She glanced down and noticed the hands hovering close. ”Oh. Um, yes. That’s fine. I don’t have anything that… yes, please go ahead.” She was going to mention not having hangups about touch, but that seemed insensitive.
As they moved to the music, Praxi felt herself gravitating closer like the galaxy girl had her own pull (ironically.) Her front almost got close enough to press Celeste’s “front” without the slime girl realizing the proximity. It was only when the song ended that she recognized how close she was and felt her insides swirling.
Cautiously, with the end of the song, she pulled away. ”This was nice, Celeste. Really nice. And I should get going to,” what did she even have to do today? ”A thing. But… maybe we can do this again? Or… keep doing it. Friday dancing?” By the next Friday, she would feel less awkward about this, right? Or maybe the Friday after that. It would be normal by then, and she did want to dance with Celeste again. Today was just… well, it was an overwhelming one for her for a few reasons.
After all the effort of making herself a living artillery, Xavier’s awareness allowed him to duck at the last moment, letting the flying ball soar past him. Fortunately, there was some nerd hiding behind Xavier’s beefy body who immediately regretted that, going down with a ball to the head.
“Praxi, please try to avoid headshots!” the teacher called out.
”I wasn’t even aiming at him!” she huffed, rippling at the indignation.
> "Eupraxia! THAT WAS SO COOL!"
Praxi swirled at the praise, pleased by the recognition before she shook herself out of it. ”You dork! No compliments, we’re enemies! Gladiators!”
She would have yelled more, but in the corner of her sight, she saw an object flying at her and dropped to the ground as a puddle. Sure, she had to make an effort to throw, but dodging and catching? She could do that.
The game raged on, and Praxi managed to catch two more balls, tossing them to a nearby redheaded teammate who smiled and did her best to shake off lingering green slime. ”It’s clean, I promise,” she protested.
“I know, I know, but it’s still sl--unf!”
And with that, Praxi’s last ally went down. She looked around, realizing she was the last of her team. The lone soldier, looking out and preparing for what came at her from the other side.
