The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Chris didn't hug Locke back, but he wasn't flailing, which to Locke was a good thing. Alright so Eaan had hugged Chris at high speeds, but Locke's hug was impressive in its own right. He was the guy that regularly wrestled with rock golems. That combined with carting the portable Fluffy on his back had given Locke a great amount of upper body strength. It had to have been almost bone crushing, but Chris had put up with it. For that Locke wasn't offended when his friend offered a hand to shake rather than reciprocating the hug. Chris was probably just as awkward, if not more, so, as Locke, and physical contact just wasn't his thing. Locke gladly accepted the handshake.
"Sort of live here," Locke said gesturing for Chris to come in. There had been enough physical contact between the two and he didn't want to make Chris feel uncomfortable. Chris had been trying to get into the school before he became victim of the bear hug, so Locke better let him actually do that. "I'm in college now, so I'm here on the weekends during the school year and stay here a bit in the summer. They uh... kind of need me close by." Locke felt no shame in being a mutant, and he took pride in being a member of the X-Men. His confidence level had shot way up ever since the trip to San Francisco that Locke had taken with Chris. But telling Chris how he was now one of the people who went out to save the world sounded like bragging.
"Where have you been man? It's been forever," Locke asked. That email that he was going to have to send to Kendra was going to be waiting a bit longer. Chris had to catch Locke up on what had been going on with his life.

Summertime meant that Locke's time was split between San Francisco and the Institute. Currently he was still at the school, enjoying the break from college and spending weekends at KD's place. Although he still was incapable of sleeping without music and some sort of light, Locke had gotten to the point where so many students and staff actually was a bit taxing at times. Still the place gave him a bed to sleep on when he wasn't at school, and there was food for his stomach. All he had to do was be a good X-Men. It gave him purpose that his job at Toys 'r Us failed to do. Saph's warning about having a relationship still bothered the young man some days, but Locke just looked at the students who were learning here at the school and his resolve was strengthened.
Not every day required him to rush out to save the world, or to watch over students in the Danger Room. Those slow days were good. He could do his own training without worry about keeping professional. Locke's training was dirty and rough, and hardly ever indoors. He also was able to take a nap, or jump on Skype to talk to his little sibs. Sometimes he went into the city and just tried to get himself lost for the day.
Today was one of those slow days. Fresh from a shower that had managed only to get the dirt out of his hair and off his skin, Locke wandered about the school. He had an idea for a Danger Room program that would be good for some of the younger and smaller students and Kendra was willing to help him to write it. All he needed to do was sit down at his laptop and send her an email about it, check to see what visuals she had come up with so far. But first a snack.
As he walked out, an apple for fuel gripped in his hand like a baseball, there was a small buzz to let someone know that someone outside the entrance needed help getting in. Shrugging his shoulders Locke took a bite and checked the peephole to see who it was.
Maybe it was because he had known Eaan for so long, or maybe it was that the two of them both were going to colleges in New York City, but when Locke flung open the door he was hardly normal. Arms reached out and latched onto the person there, squeezing them tightly. The apple fell to the ground and bounced a little. Oh Locke knew that the guy wasn't much for the hugging, and when he had been glomped by an Eaan years ago had practically melted down, but comfort be danged, Locke hadn't seen his friend Chris in a long time and it was good to see him.

"We do have security measures put in place. The Danger Room is down here in the sublevels where there is no reason to go unless you are hurt or a member of the X-Men. The Danger Room only opens when it is given an authorization code by a member of the X-Men. Students aren't allowed in unless accompanied by an X-Men, and if you didn't notice, I had a kill switch so if someone is stupid enough to come in here without a responsible adult they won't get themselves killed." He was willing to accept that maybe there had been some sort of glitch with the programming that had let the Danger Room started up without a member of the team inside or at the control panel. What Locke had a hard time buying though was that they had innocently run into here.
"And of course you couldn't have known that, I mean it wasn't as though someone had been standing in here, trying to tell you that it was dangerous, right?"He was looking very intently at the girl when he said that. Lack of shoes on feet gave more weight to the boy's argument than what the lady said.

"Ms. Summers, I want you to tell me something," Locke started, but his voice was muffled part of the way through as he started pulling his shirt up and over his head. Sure he didn't like being seen without a shirt on, but he hated the clinging of wet clothes even more. In any case his uniform as a X-men was significantly tighter and really stretched the limits of Locke's comfort zone. With his wet shirt off his back Locke could really wring out the water from it. It had been soaked thoroughly, and Locke wondered how long he had been out of it before he had shouted for Ms. Summers to turn the water off.
"What did your powers tell you about me. Every little thing that it said," Gone was the student like questioning, Locke had taken the role of instructor once more. "Before we even started the exercise you had to have noticed that I have a disability. I know that it's not in good taste to take advantage of that, but when you're trying to survive, use every little thing you have at your disposal. I don't bump into things the way that I should because of my lack of depth perception and being totally blind of everything happening on the left hand side of me. Why is that? You know I work with the earth."
He sighed. Ms. Summers might be his elder but that did not mean that she was more mature than he was. Admittedly his life events had lead him to group up quickly, even before the car crash. Her whining about things was getting on his nerves a little. But Locke was a patient man. "Yes Ms. Summers. It would have been a good idea to hit me with a pinecone. Or drop on top of me while you were in the tree. Alright, homework time. First watch three episodes of the A-Team and tell me how you would have gotten yourself out of the situation versus how they do it for each episode. Second, spend an entire day with someone you don't know well at a mall, and record what your senses tell you about the person, not what happens in the mall."

It was hard to pull the wool over Earthwalker's eyes, even if you were someone that knew him well. He continued to stare down the two Danger Room stowaways, his face clearly saying "I ain't buying it." Getting into the Danger Room was not something that happened casually. It wasn't like opening a closet door, thinking it was the exit door. Safety protocols were built into it. So even if the two had just wandered into here on a whim, something that Locke found hard to believe, it would not have started up a program without being given the command to do so. "You're really going to play the finger pointing game? My little brother stopped that years ago and he's younger than you both."
Locke sighed and with a twitch of his fingers the giant rock monster, known best as Fluffy, went charging off to fight the creature that the Danger Room program had created. His head had not changed position, but no longer was the Earthwalker looking at Tses or Clyde. There was a glassy quality to his eyes, as if he were staring thousands of years into the future. Over the years he had gotten very skilled with his powers. Skilled enough that he was able to talk to people while still operating Fluffy. No matter how talented he got though, Earthwalker would always have that distant look on his face when using his powers. It went hand in hand with having to split his mind up.
"Terminate program, authorization Earthwalker code seven Mai alpha," Locke barked out at last. In a very tidy manner the program started shutting down, taking with it the ruined cityscape and Fluffy. Locke felt a shudder travel through his body. It had felt like he had stepped into a pool of water that had been slicked with oil. "Now let's try this again, but this time with the truth. Or else you're going to have to go through my planned session and it sure as hell is worse than that."

The broken glass that littered the buildings and streets began trembling, reacting to something new and unseen. Each little bit of broken windows that surrounded Clyde and Tses flipped back and forth, rattling harder and sounding like some sort of alien bacon sizzling. Then the motion froze, the glass shards pointed side up tilted, took aim, and flew up and outwards, heading straight to the monster that was terrorizing the two reluctant Danger Room occupants. No sooner had the glass taken flight then a new creature rose up. This one was made of concrete and like the glass, paid no attention to Clyde or Tses. It was about six foot tall and broad in the chest.
One mighty hand swung at the acid spitting creature and knocked it to the ground. As the creature followed through it looked almost as if it were melting down into the ground on top of it. Down the street walked a young man, clad in the uniform of the X-Men but lacking any sort of footwear. And he looked pissed. There was no flinching as he walked over the glass that had fallen after his first strike against. Nor was there any concern for the possibility of more of those creatures popping up on him. He could tell where the tunnels are, they felt like an empty spot beneath his feet.
If it was backup that Clyde wanted, it was backup that he got. Locke, better known as Earthwalker, had been planning a session for himself, a chance to get some focus and prepare for the next week. He had not been expecting for a scenario to already be running, and he certainly didn't plan on having to rescue people who shouldn't even be in there. "Now do either of you want to tell me what the hell is going on?" Locke asked them, arms crossed. The beast that he had attacked earlier was getting up, and he responded by raising a golem in front of the two who were in trouble and the creature.

"The Danger Room is great for all the possible scenarios that you could face. In there you can learn how to handle anything from Lovecraft creatures to zombie pirates, to just hitting a target," Locke explained as he started ringing out his shirts. The fabric clung to him and hung heavily making him feel more miserable about it than having had Ms. Summers get the best of him. The idea of it was to eventually loose, but it wasn't to surrender. It certainly wasn't to get a soaking. "The problem is that because it's a computer program everything is predetermined. Technology is making improvements everyday, and the computer that runs the Danger room is amazing. But as amazing as it is the technology just doesn't exist yet that allows a program to think and make adjustments. We can't make the Danger Room replicate the human brain, and that's something that you need to learn how to deal with. Not everyone follows logic the way you and I do. Got to practice for spontaneity.”
It was admittedly funny to hear Locke telling someone to be more spontaneous. He liked it best when things were regular and dependable. When people started acting in ways that he could not predict or understand it frustrated the young man. With the twins it was easier for him to get their sometimes insane behavior, but for people like his buddy Eaan or Saph, there was just no getting what was going on. Kids were so much easier. That was why he enjoyed working with them. You can't really tell someone who's older than you when they are doing something you don't like, especially if it's a person with authority over you. Exceptions being when it was some form of abuse. Even then it is hard for anyone to speak up, especially Locke who found it hard to express himself. Younger people you could speak more openly with in his opinion.
Dripping wet Locke had to admit that just wringing out his shirts wasn't going to be enough. He'd need to change his clothes and towel off his hair. At least these days there wasn't the unruly mop of it, and just rubbing his hand against the top of his head got a good chunk of the water off there. Now that Ms. Summers was no longer hosing him down he felt safe to approach her. Being barefoot in the mud you would expect some sort of slippage, but that would be a wild underestimation of the teen's powers over the earth. With each step the ground beneath him seemed to be on a tumbler, and the wet mud was rolled over to make room for the dry dirt. “When you're working with me, we'll be outside in good weather. Unlike you I don't do too well in the Danger Room. It gives me things I can work with, but it's like practicing for a triathlon using training wheels on your bike and a bathtub of water. And we will be working together some more Ms. Summers. You can count on that.”
Maybe he sounded a little too adult as he said that, as if he was trying to say that because he was a full fledged member of the X-Men he was superior to her. Locke was in reality one of, if not, the newest one to don the title. His only advantage, and only reason why he was so confident in his powers was because he depended upon them for his day to day life, usually in a way that the others did not have to. Locke's head tilted in thought for a second before he asked, sounding very much like he was the student and Ms. Summers was the teacher, ”Why didn't you hit me earlier?”

Locke kept quiet, nodding his head when Saph said that their target was hard to pinpoint because of the rolling blackouts. It made sense to him. If power was cutting out from this thing then it would make sense that there would be no visuals to confirm its location. Given that this was something having to do with electricity it made sense to have the X-Man who could manipulate rocks and the earth tag along. He volunteered for it not just for the sake of the man driving them, crazy as he might be driving.
"Single doesn't have to mean not in a relationship," Locke pointed out before falling silent again. He had meant it in the relationship way when he had said it though, mostly just to try and get Saph to talk a little. Silence on the part of the Earthwalker wasn't uncommon. With him it was golden. But for Saph it was very much like when a little kid falls quiet. You just know that there's trouble brewing. It was better if Saph was talking, even if what he said sometimes didn't make sense in the past.
For a brief moment the earth manipulator removed his death grip on the door and started scratching at his head. Since he had first chopped off the hair a few years back he had been keeping it short. When it started getting long again he would just take a pair of scissors to it. It was more symbolic then wanting to save money, or even that he liked the way it looked. Locke cutting his hair meant that he was taking control over something that had been blocking him from embracing life and all it's messy moments. Right now his head looked as though a weed wacker had been taken to it.
Then Saph mentioned KD. All the older man's anger over what happened at the wedding, something that Locke thought was justifiable, and now he was trying to give Locke dating advice. "KD knows what I did. Before our first date I went and tried to stop a freaking volcano and practically burnt myself up. She's heard what happened to my sister on Halloween, my friend almost drowning because he wanted to go for a boat ride when I visited, and all the other countless times that the people I care about being in the line of danger. But the weirdest thing is that I'm not worried about her getting hurt, and she's not either." It was weird thinking about his relationship with her. After all, he was the guy who had broken up with his first girlfriend because she had been too clinging to him. "We've got this thing worked out. She'll be safe as long as I remember one simple thing... crap."

Sometimes being a hero sucked Locke thought. It could be as simple as having to cut back your class prep time so that you could go stop a megalomaniac with a death wish against mutant kind or human kind. His Halloween had been disrupted by a biker gang when they tried to trash a hotel. Flying out to locations was always stressful on the teen, and he still was convinced that the jet would spontaneously combust or something. Today he was spared that at least, but riding in a car was hardly top on Locke's list of way to travel. Normally if he had to go by car the teen would duck into the back seat and sit in the middle. Riding shotgun made his palms sweaty and brought to the front of his mind the last few seconds of full vision he had. There had been a time when he couldn't even force himself to sit in a car at all. But for the sake this mission, or more specifically for the sake of the one at the wheel, Locke dared the front seat.
If being a hero sucked for school or for taking your little siblings out for a fun visit, having your wedding crashed, well, destroyed practically, sucketh the greatest suck. He wasn't sure why Saph had asked him to be a groomsman. The two had done some things together yes, but it had always been business, and Locke always felt as if he was chasing after the older man to keep him safe. Honestly the man got himself into crazy situations and needed someone more sane to keep him grounded. In the past Saph had been mildly insane, but Locke was worried the man was going to loose it big time here. He bore witness to the man's unraveling. And while Locke wasn't going to pretend that he was the best example of mental health, he knew that Saph needed someone to keep him from going too far into a very dark place.
Earthwalker, as he was called when performing as a X-Men had been focused entirely upon the road ahead, nursing thoughts quietly in his head while trying not to let flashbacks of the accident that took his dead make him shake. As such he was surprised when Saph broke the silence to talk to him. Even more surprising was just how good of a grasp of his behavior Saph seemed to have. Locke did have some things to say to the older man, but wasn't quite sure where to start or even if what he had to say was going to be any help at all. "I'm always quiet," Locke said, one hand gripping tightly to his seat belt, the other going to the little handle thing that you used to shut the door when inside the car. His knuckles were turning white and he tried to relax his grip. "Eyes on the road." Honestly it was like trying to keep a puppy in check! But in all fairness Locke had never told anyone really about the car crash, and Saph couldn't have known why Locke was being so paranoid about his driving.
"I don't like wasting words," Locke said after another moment of silence, before Saph could get too snappish about it again. Where the older man was pissed off with what he said, Locke was being very calm and level headed. "We at the location yet?" he asked. Saph might want some space to tackle what he was feeling, but at the same time Locke had seen the man being kept clear of. "It's weird. First time we met, you were a single guy going into a gun fight with a lead pipe, and I was hiding behind my hair.". There. If Saph wanted to say anything about the events of the wedding he could. Locke wasn't the type to push people.

For the most part Locke was a fairly easy going guy. Life had thrown him a curve ball and now Locke had no choice but to accept things as they came. He'd learned to cope with roommates that were so far away from him in personality and behavior that they might as well have been from a different country. With stone faced solidarity Locke approached every surprise that came his way. One thing that he could not deal with though was cold. Locke craved being warm and comfortable. Being wet and cold did not make for a happy Earthwalker.
Locke sputtered and held out his hand, trying to block off the worst of the stream of water. Such action meant that his concentration on the earth was given up. He had wanted Ms. Summers to do something to stop him, but he had expected a different type of attack. Bruises and bumps he'd have no complaints about. After all he was the guy who split his lip wrestling with a pile of dirt. The water had made operating Fluffy more difficult, but he didn't think that Ms. Summers would turn the hose on him.
"That's enough!" the Californian managed to get out between coughs. A spray of the water had actually hit him square in the face and he was blindsided and dealing with a mouth full of water before he could say more. "Kill it." He hadn't even stopped being drenched but Locke already was shivering from the cold water. And the day had started off so promising, with the sun heating the air to something that he might even say was hot. Good thing he had taken off his hightops or else he'd be squishing the rest of the day.

Mud was something that Locke could work with, sort of. Fluffy moved so much faster when there was the introduction of water. However keeping Fluffy together when the dirt became mud was harder. No longer was Fluffy able to keep doing the Bugs Bunny impression. That required the earth to be a bit more solid. Locke was going to have to move quickly before the ground became too saturated for him to be able to do anything. Already he could feel the topmost layers getting hazy in his earth vision.
Such a combo of mud would make just keeping a Fluffy together a challenge. Time for a change in tactics. Ms. Summers had seemed to object to taking her shoes off. Either she was even more insecure about bare skin than he was, or she did not want to risk getting dirty. Locke chewed his lip in thought as he weighed the options. A part of having her take her shoes off was because he did not want to risk getting them dirty. Thankfully that was only a part.
The mud, slick with water, wasn't able to take shape into the golem, but that did not mean that Locke had no affect on the dirt that was in it. What would have usually been an arm pulling up the rest of Fluffy came out as a burbling mess of a bubble that burst. The mud splattered by it didn’t bother Locke. Dirt and mud tended to be attracted to him anyways like iron shavings to a magnet. There was a reason why Locke had to do his laundry separately from the rest of his family.

"That's why we're working together," Locke said, giving Ms. Summer's a knowing grin. He couldn't help but feel the need to poke a little bit of fun at her previous statement, especially since the two had hit an impass in the lesson. Maybe joking with her would get her to be less stiff. That in itself was a rather ironic thought. He was Locke Tori, known to his friends as the rock man, not because of mutations, but because how immovable he could be, and how he did not give way to others. Locke did not often crack jokes, and on the rare occasion in which he did so, it was always with a sense of dry humor that went unnoticed. "We're working to getting you were you don't need to call for someone to rescue you, which means you have to think only about what is useful to you."
Her weight came dropping down to the ground like a hammer, causing a sigh to ripple through Locke's body. Honestly, when were people going to learn that the earth did not like having things thrown into it with such force. Ok, so it wasn't nearly as bad as Saph's landing on the beach, but still. Locke could have just as easily had the earth start gobbling Ms. Summers once her feet touched down. He had seen her leap from the tree, and was already in contact with the thing that would be manipulated to do so. It was good to see her roll with the landing though. It was a hard lesson for Locke to get himself. His knee occasionally had flare ups after the accident and just did not want to bend, so it was confusing to both the earth, and the young adult himself, when he didn't remember to use the momentum to soften the blow.
Now what are you up to? Locke pondered as Ms. Summers took off running past him. She had clearly come to some sort of plan while he had been busy staring up at the tree. In any case she was on the ground now, and to make sure that she didn't forget what was happening, he really should do something to startle her. Like in an old Bugs Bunny cartoon, a lump of earth raced beside her, swerving in front to switch to the opposite side. Nothing striking at her, only at worst trying to make her trip.

Locke sighed. It seemed that he still had a ways to go before he was to be able to come up with effective lesson plans. His intention was to have Ms. Summers have to deal with Fluffy alone, that she would have to defend herself against the golem. Problem was that where they were, the only things she could do really was to climb in trees and maybe spit on the head area of Fluffy. Locke drummed his fingers on his thighs for a minute, giving serious thought to her question. Well, she wasn't as large as Fluffy, and he had thrown himself to the ground plenty of times in his own practices with the golem.
"I could put a time limit on you," Locke offered. Sometimes the pressure of a time constrant made you decide on things faster. If Ms. Summers was forced to think fast she could react well, as Locke had seen with his test with the charging Fluffy. The trouble was getting her to use that same sort of fast thinking whenever there was a possibility of a threat. Now that she was in a tree Ms. Summers was balking again, not taking the entirety of the situation in, and asking him what to do. ”I’ve given you two options. Handle Fluffly or get assistance in dealing with the problem. The latter will just mean you have to depend upon others to come in and save you.”
Just to reaffirm his message Locke had Fluffy crash against the base of the tree, a smaller golem than he would have normally used since he didn’t want the tree falling down with Ms. Summers in there. Not only that but also the fact that there were tree rooots to try and work around. He was willing to risk having Ms. Summers hurt him.

Evelyn got the picture. It took time and a Fluffy charging at her for Ms. Summers to get moving, but the fact remained that she now was taking the threat seriously. No more were the objections that she needed to think things through. First rule of defense? Get use to working on the fly. Up into the tree Ms. Summers had went, presenting them both with an interesting development. Locke could not touch her as long as she was in the tree, and Ms. Summers had almost nothing to deal with the Fluffy that was circling round the base of the tree. Like a pack of hounds that had treed their quarry, Fluffy paced around the tree.
For now Locke let the earth reabsorb Fluffy. He wanted to be able to give Ms. Summers his full attention while addressing her, and keeping Fluffy going meant that he couldn't see where she was in the tree. If worse came to worse he could always summon it back in an instant. "Alright, you managed to escape, but that isn't enough," Locke said. He couldn't help but remember the test in the Danger Room he had to overcome to become an official X-Men. Escaping from the giant scorpians had been one thing. To try and fight against them was a task in itself, and still he had to find water.
"Fluffy still is around, and that tree is just giving you shelter for right now," Locke pointed out to her. It wasn't often that Locke found himself looking up to someone to catch their eye, having yet to finish growing. Bright summer sunlight trickled through the open spaces in the tree's branches, and Locke shaded his eyes against it with a hand. "Either you have to find a way of taking care of it yourself or getting someone to your position to help."
