The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Will they hear me?"
Locke lifted up the pig mask and looked at Chase confused. Would who hear what now? He had thought for sure that Chase would have bypassed the door that held the party behind it. There was a desire to tell Chase to forget about that door, that you had to be someone on the inside to have any fun. Chase probably knew that there were times when you aren't allowed in the group. Didn't he get it now? "Guess that depends how much they had to drink," he answered in a daze.
Well, Chase wanted to try the door, and Locke wasn't exactly the touching type, so he couldn't exactly pull Chase away from the door. "Don't be surprised if nobody answers it ok? I mean there's got to be hundreds of doors to try in this building alone. And there's apartments all over New York."

"Well that was an adventure," Locke joked with Chase. The kid would eventually look back at the green hand incident and laugh. He would realize that it was Halloween and there were people that wanted to be scary. The next door Locke went right past. There wasn't even muffled noises from it. Either nobody was home or they didn't want anyone to know that someone was there. There was a lot of noise coming out of the next door however.
To Locke it sounded like a party was going on behind the closed door. Chances were that if that was the case there wouldn't be anything for Chase. "Take the lead Kid Death, I'm just here to watch over you,"

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Gina altered her clothing. If not her, then her mom. Locke didn't like going to get a haircut at people he didn't know. He had to go to someone who had known him from before the crash. Granted a dead eye wasn't quite the same thing, but Locke could sort of see why Gina would want to alter her own clothes. "That's cool, I don't think I can even thread a needle." That much should be obvious. Locke's jeans had holes in the knees that could have been sewn up easily enough, had he any skill with a needle and thread.
"Maybe you could figure out jeans for me that aren't a dirt magnet," he joked. It probably was just his mutation trying to prepare him for anything, but it did get annoying from time to time to have to do laundry so often.
Time for another subject, though Locke wasn't sure what to say. They had talked about the past, sort of, and the future, which left the present. "Good pizza huh?" he asked. The question was really lame. "Geeze, I told you was no good with teens." He had to laugh at his lameness.

A snort. Locke really did try to suppress his laughter. Laughing at a little kid was just wrong, but Locke couldn't help it. Chase was startled by the hand and his hesitation was so perfect. Even Chris and Mai weren't immune from being entertainment to Locke when they were frightened, so long as it wasn't someone outside the family that frightened them.
The door closed slightly and there were shuffling noises behind it. Locke wondered if he had been wrong and the green hand wouldn't give a treat to Chase. They could have very well found an apartment inhabited by those that felt that trick was the better option. Back in San Francisco one house was avoided like the plague after you were in sixth grade. The owner liked to drop eggs on you once you knocked on the door if you were older.
Just when Locke decided that this door was going to be fruitless, the hand came back out holding two Blow Pops. "Thank you," Locke said, taking the candy and dropping it into Chase's bag. He wasn't heartless and figured it would be better if he took from the intimidating thing.

Locke stood back up and headed towards the pizza. Not because he felt uncomfortable with the idea of the future, but because he wanted another slice. Yes the future was approaching him at breakneck speed, and he still wasn't entirely clear on where he would end up, or even what sort of colleges he was looking for. There was at least an inkling of what he wanted to do. "Well, sort of." He stared at the remaining slices of pizza, deciding which one looked the best. It was crucial to go for one that had the right amount of pepperoni and cheese.
"I like English and writing, but I don't think I want to be a writer. History might be my favorite class, but I can't talk to teens now, so being a teacher..." he whistled to indicate something flying past, "That's right out the window. The only other thing I'm good at is kids." Slice selected Locke turned back to the couch and resumed his spot. "So I guess something with child development. You?"

Locke sighed. Chase was going to have to learn at some point that life wasn't always fair. Maybe he had learned it already, but that didn't mean that the kid accepted it. Chances were that Locke was too cynical and was surprised when something was fair. When you are a pessimist any positive moment in your life can be a big surprise and a pleasant moment. Either way Chase was taking the lack of candy waaaay to seriously. "Hm, you're a little late to say things should be fair. Can only work for those born today and later," he joked.
This time Locke knocked on the door frame and stepped aside. The idea was to make it so that Chase would clearly be the one Trick or Treating. By being on the side Locke was also able to pin the pillowcase against the wall. He also was able to feel the approaching footsteps. So there was someone home like he thought, and they probably would give Chase more candy. You don't walk up to a door on Halloween unless you had something to give. "Get ready," Locke said.
The door opened a crack and a green bony hand slipped through. The lights were off in the apartment other than the TV, so it was hard to see the arm the hand was attached to.

"Who ever said life had to be fair?" he asked. Locke had to hand it to whoever raised Chase. The kid was decent and it bothered him enough that he wanted to give Locke some of the candy he earned. "Chase, it's cool, really," Locke insisted. At the rate Chase was going by the end of the night he'd have nothing left in his bag. Generosity is great, but Locke was perfectly fine with the kid being a little greedy with his candy. It wasn't as if candy had the same importance when you get older. "I wasn't planning on getting much anyways and whenever I take my brother and sister out on Halloween I don't get candy. Keep what you get ok?"
The next door didn't have any decorations and Locke looked at Chase for a second. Should they knock on it? He put a finger to his lips, or where the lips would be if not for the pig mask, to signal that they should be quiet. Listening he heard the muffled sounds of a TV. "Someone's home. Should we try it?" he lifted his hand up to the door, waiting for Chase's ruling.

One of the best things about kids was that you could make them happy with the smallest gesture. A smile, a piece of candy, going along with whatever fantasy they were dreaming up. Locke watched with almost a sense of pride as Chase's face lit up like the Fourth of July. Chase remembered his manners with a little nudge. It didn't occur to him that Chase would have thought it odd that Locke didn't get any candy.
So it was a little bit of a surprise when Chase questioned it once the door had closed. "For one I didn't say Trick or Treat," he explained. It was important that Chase understand what the process was for Trick or Treating. Once he had explained about that he had to explain why it wasn't that odd for Locke to not get candy that night. "And I'm getting older Chase. When a kid goes Trick or Treating it's cute and acceptable. When a teen asks, it's iffy. If they have on a pig mask and sound like Grandpa's been smoking too much, well... I'm not the most likely candidate for candy. It's cool though. Someone always has a bowl set out and I could snag a piece from there."
He gestured for Chase to start heading down the hallway to the next door. The problem with apartment buildings was that there wasn't always a clear sign as to who was giving out candy. No porch lights, and for the most part no jack-o-lanterns either.

Chase was doing good for his first time. He said the necessary words for candy and played along with the door guy. A small handful of candy was transferred from the plastic bowl into Locke's backpack. "Well then Grim Reaper, I hope you're off duty," the man joked as he gave Chase the candy. Another glare was given to Locke, who promptly hid the pillowcase behind him. Trick or Treating? Me? No you're thinking of the one armed man. Beneath the cloak's hood Locke face was burning brightly with humiliation. Had it not been for Chase he probably would have knocked on the door himself and have to deal with the too old for Halloween schpeal. If Locke was going to get any sugary treats tonight he'd have to wait for the popular bowl set outside the door.
"Thank you," Locke said to prompt Chase, but also so he would look more like he was taking the kid around. Generally speaking you could get away with being in a costume and going door to door if you were a chaperon for a kid. "Happy Halloween," he said cheerfully, or at least cheerfully for Locke.
"Kid Death you just got your first piece of Halloween candy, what are you going to do next?" he asked once the door was closed, holding out an imaginary microphone to the kid.

Sometimes it was easy to forget how gullible a kid can be. The younger you are the less you know about things, and the more you depend on those older to teach you. Locke raised his eyebrows as Chase accepted the bit about scissors and wanted to know when it happened. He hadn't thought that the kid would believe him, since it would have had to have been some jumbo scissors to leave the scars, and who really did run with scissors anyways? Art class never has an emergency where you have to rush across the room because someone got tied up in their Jacob's ladder. Telling Chase that it had been a car accident at this point felt wrong. It would be like lying. "Eleven," he mumbled, not believing that Chase was buying this. OK, so he was still lying. At least with the scissors there was a lesson to be learned. What could Chase get from the truth? Don't go to baseball games?
Trick or Treat Locke mouthed when he caught Chase looking towards him. There was a warmth in his chest as he remembered the first Halloween he went out with his brother and sister. They weren't able to go far, since there was a certain level of skill needed with walking, and a house with too many decorations was frightening when you are still learning letters from fuzzy puppets. Chase was certainly older than Chris and Mai had been their first time, but it felt the same to Locke.
The door opened, causing the plastic sheet to lift slightly, and a man in sweatpants with more hair on his arms than on his head opened the door. A bright orange plastic bowl held the object of desire that night. Skittles, M&M's, Milky Ways. "Who's this?" the man asked, trying to sound like he was scared of Chase's costume. A suspicious look was sent Locke's way, and the teen realized that he was still carrying the pillowcase that Chase had meant to use.

"Weird," Locke said, remembering what he could of Mendocino, "She goes fishing in a pond and my dad didn't even go scuba diving in an ocean." Great, first he had gotten into a conversation with Tarin about dating that resorted to the cliche baseball terms, and now, months and months later he was talking with a girl his age about the same thing, this time using a marine sport. At least the two were talking about their parents dating lives. That was tolerable in that it meant Locke didn't have to be embarrassed. Well no more embarrassing than anytime you think about your parents doing anything with romance. Ew.
As much of a sucker his dad could be for souvenirs, it sounded like Gina's mom's store was a place the two would have avoided like the plague. Hugo hadn't been much for buying himself new clothes, and Locke only wanted something new if what he had no longer fit or if it fell apart. The downside to finding out what was sold was now Gina wanted to know what Locke's parents did. "Dunno what my mom did, but I think she stayed at home when I was born. Kendra's an internet nanny. Sounds cool until you realize it gives her access to everything that you might want to watch or play. Everything turns into a debate. 'This movie's rated R, but this is what's in it,' 'You're not old enough to see that' 'I want to get this video game' 'Chris and Mai might have nightmares from it'" He argued back and forth with himself, raising his voice for the Kendra parts. It sounded awkward with how low his voice was. Now came the tricky part. Explaining his dad. Locke didn't want to just out and say that his dad had died. The topic was still sore for him and embarrassing to people if they casually brought it up. "Dad doesn't do much these days." he mumbled and chewed on his pizza.

The dead eye was a horrible embarrassment to Locke, his biggest insecurity and it's source was the darkest moment in his life. Anyone who had spent five minutes with the Californian would notice how frequently he adjusted his hair to cover his left eye. And yet Locke never hid it from Chris or Mai. Surprisingly when Chase started to stare at the dead eye Locke didn't immediately start brushing the hair into its usual place. "Accident. Don't run with scissors."
Locke picked up the speed. Chase might be fine with this cooler weather, but without the hood up or the pig mask on Locke's costume wasn't nearly as warm as it could be. Not that the cloak wasn't warm. It wasn't a flimsy thing bought from a store. Eaan had gotten his hands on a good one. Anyone else who had any sense would say that the cloak was warm, maybe a little too warm. "A human shifter? Pretty cool business you've got there Chase. You could be your own best friend if you wanted to."
Once inside the first apartment building Locke nodded at a door with a plastic cover on it. It was something you could pick up at a grocery store, a cheap piece of plastic that had a cartoon Frankenstein monster peeking out from an unrealistic purple door. "Ready for your first stop? Knock on the door, and when they open it say Trick or Treat. Oh and hold out the bag. Easiest way of getting candy and a classic. Can't go wrong."

Locke did one of those solitary laughs that doesn't mean that you think something is too funny but still is a little funny. "For years it was just my dad. I didn't think he went outside unless there wasn't food in the fridge or to drop me off at school I don't know how he even met Kendra." Absentmindedly Locke wiped some of the grease from his pizza off on his jeans. As much as he wracked his mind he honestly couldn't remember how his step-mother met his dad. Just someday there was Kendra. Thinking about it she had been there ever since she first showed up.
Time had come for him to ask about her mom's shop. Locke knew that this was the right moment for two reasons. Reason the first, he didn't have any pizza in his mouth, which meant that he wouldn't be choking if he tried to talk. Reason the second, Gina and him had both fallen into a quiet mode. "You said your mom had a shop, what did she sell?"

"Is that part of your mutation?"
"Uh, yeah," Locke said and started chewing his lip again, "I can't see things right, so when my mutation kicked in it helped me out. I can see things when they touch the ground. So I haven't learned how you touch the ground." The explanation was as simple as he could get it and was something that he was trying to work out. For the moment Chris and Mai didn't care what exactly he did. Any tales that they told of their big brother the mutant was accomplished with noises that produced a great amount of spit. Until Locke learned how Chase walked, how the kid distributed his weight, he was going to have to keep an actual eye on him.
"And you Kid Death?" he asked, "Care to share what you do?" If nothing else Locke had learned that not everyone wanted to talk about their mutation. There were those like Chris where it was obvious, and he'd met some who it wasn't obvious what they did and they just didn't want to say anything.

Time for a little honesty. ”Being older isn’t all it’s cracked up to be,” he confessed to Gina. ”Don’t get me wrong, Chris and Mai are the best thing that’s happened to me, but you always worry about them. Is he eating his veggies? Is she going to have guys try to flirt with her? Then they try to get into your stuff, so your room isn’t yours anymore, it’s got your clothes and your music, but it’s not really yours.”
”And I bet you probably got treated like a slave at one point, but that doesn’t work. Guilt for one and risk of being snitched on.” Hard to say which was a bigger reason for him to not abuse his position of power over his siblings. Probably the guilt. ”I bet your parents are more likely to give you a little bro or sis than Kendra is. I think twins kind of turns you off from having kids anytime soon.”
