The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Noel found herself appreciating this peek behind the curtain. This wasn't perfectly coiffed and rose-scented Devon. This was a side of Devon with disheveled hair and bloodshot eyes. Despite all that, and all the nonsense, he still managed to be weirdly charming. Maybe it was that hint of boyish insecurity that was wrapped up in the promise of... well, Noel wasn't exactly sure what Devon was promising, but it appealed to pretty much everyone.
> “I went to a gay bar,”
"Oh. Were they nice to you?"
> “SO friendly. I snuck out their back door!"
Okay. Now that was funny. A laugh bubbled out of her despite her irritation at being called to babysit. This was Karma, she was sure. Well, Karma would be satisfied to learn that Noel had put alcohol firmly back on her 'NO' list. Every breath was a whiff of eu de vomit that hammered that decision home again.
"Don't worry, I won't let anyone be too nice to you anymore." She gave her most solemn bodyguard oath, but since they were sliding into the back loading area for Haven, that might actually prove to be a smidge difficult. "Eugh. Maybe I shouldn't promise that. Everyone here's too damn nice."
> “I may need to lay down,”
And a shower to boot. Noel pursed her lips together and slid out of the vehicle first, eyes sweeping for a threat that just wasn't there.
Damn. What she wouldn't give for an honest threat right now. The driver got out and offered her a hand, but she declined, thanked, and dismissed him before going back for her charge.
"Come on, Hadden." She tugged his arm over her shoulder and hefted him up and out with her hand as a preemptive protection against smacking his face against the car door frame. "Like a reversal of getting stuffed in the back of a beat cop's car." She noted how upsidedown and backwards the world had gotten lately. Her only experience with the police dynamic was as the one getting arrested.
"There's a step," she helpfully reminded him at the bottom of some steps. He seemed more than a little incapable at the moment. "If you can't do it, I will." He was taller than Michael, but she'd hefted the Ranger up to his apartment. Hadden couldn't be any worse.

A-yup. Skunked. Sh*tfaced. Schlonkered. Noel was touched, in a way, that he'd called her. There were only a few people she trusted to handle her in such a state. She was touched in a whole other way after he fell into the car and then flung the car door open into her face. She caught it millimeters from her face.
And he was calling her Christmas.
He had the social credit, but he was spending it like it was burning a hole in his pocket.
> “You coming?”
Noel helped one of Hadden's shoes into the vehicle since he seemed to have left it behind without noticing and slid into her seat behind him. The cooled interior of the car was a stark contrast from the humidity of summer. It was sticky outside. Summer was great and all, but air conditioning was an absolute blessing.
"Yeah, still early summer unless you're driving through an anomaly." Noel pulled the door shut behind her and leaned across Hadden to grab his seat belt and secure him into his seat before she did the same for herself. Thankfully this was going to be a short drive back to Haven.
She tapped the partition, glad to not be driving with this distraction on hand.
Oh. Hadn't he said something about an anomaly? No. Actually, haddn't Hadden giggled something about an anomaly? Maybe it had him all twisted up or maybe he'd been trapped in that bar with those stinky heathens and had to dull his senses somehow. Thaaaat was a stretch, she knew. It was just that she was having such a hard time figuring this out with her incomplete knowledge. The dark sedan rolled forward into traffic, sleek and smooth as a snake.
"So, you gonna talk or are we going to pretend like I didn't just scrape you up off the floor like bubble gum? I'd ask for your consent to figure out your problem, but— One, ya just puked your guts out. You're gonna have to brush your teeth. Two, I don't think you're in a position to give consent." Noel gave him all the side-eye. All of it.

The way his face lit up? Yeah, Noel knew she was a goner. She hadn't wanted any dogs. Now at least she was down one. Even if Michael and Noel didn't work out being all 'MyFace Official' and everything, at least they would always have this weird dog connection.
"You should see your face." How could she say no to that face? He was sooo happy, like a kid who just got what he asked from Santa. It was so damn happy she wasn't sure how to process. It made her all weird and melty inside. "You've secretly wanted a small bear to call your own, haven't you?"
Tired of getting her cheeks squished, the puppy nipped at Noel’s fingers. The memory mancer yanked her hand out of the way before the puppy got purchase, but didn’t do enough to quell the thing’s enthusiasm. Michael was busy explaining how dangerous and big these buggers were supposed to be. Noel was busy trying to not get eat-ed.
”I guess Howdy is taken as your CB handle, huh? So maybe ‘Y’all’ or something else fully Texas?” He didn’t seem to do anything half-Texas.
While she was distracted trying to think of a name for Ranger’s puppy, hers finally managed to lock onto her hand. ”Ow dammit, sit!” And, to her surprise, it sat. She had to fight for her hand back, but no skin was broken. It was a love nip, really. It’s wagging tail slowed as she narrowed her eyes at it

Noel was legitimately embarrassed about the plane. "I had no idea it was worth that much. I only used it one time and I was floored that the hangar fees from this year had already been taken out of the total." Ambrose Jaager was either richer or stupider than he looked. Noel had some small worry about taxes and all that, but so little experience with legal income, that she just had to trust that Hades had covered himself on that front.
"Thank you for taking care of that for me. And, I guess, drinks are on me?" If they were on her, she was ordering a second moonshine surprise delight challenge whatever. He knew exactly what he did by sending her puppies. She would both forever be in his debt for it and hold it against him forever. It was her right as a woman to be contrary when people bought her things.
>"You say havoc, I say grounding and becoming responsible, besides once you train them they are very loyal and very capable guard dogs, they will certainly be big enough."
"Yeah, glad you went with girls. They already might end up bigger than me. If you'd gotten males I don't know if there'd be room enough for all of us on the bed once they're grown up." Sooooo weird thinking ahead like that, but Noel was satisfied to imagine herself still at Haven in 2 years. And satisfied to have a dog or two that would make the biggest teddy bears for bedmates. Already Dammit had wormed her way out of her kennel more nights than she stayed. Noel was starting to realize that kennel training might not be for Dammit.
> "Please tell me that is not what you are feeding them!"
"Wha-" Noel pulled her phone back, doubly embarrassed now. "Huh? Wha-No, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, it was horrible."
Hades shared his puppies. Which, like, should have been illegal.
"I can't imagine you walking all these. How do you not just get your arms yanked off?" Already Noel was sure she was doing a bad job of being a puppy mom if she was having so much trouble.
Hades explained the challenge as Noel poured the tea. It was stupid, she knew, but because it was a challenge, a physical proof that she could do something, she was finding herself wanting to try it despite knowing that it was a bad idea.
>"You are well prepared and determined I see."
"I need to know my limits, and I want to know if it'll ever be possible to have a physical relationship with someone else." He could poo-poo her idea all he wanted. She needed to know if she could ever be an equal partner to Michael. If not, maybe she should put the brakes on and take the out he'd graciously offered her. She tossed back her tea before she lost her nerve and did her best to keep it on her tongue.
It was exactly as bad as she'd imagined. Whoever insisted their coffee be that hot, she would never understand. She breathed out once, twice, and then had to give up and swallow the tea. What the boiling liquid tasted like, she couldn't say. Not sweet. She hadn't bothered to add any sugar.
"Okay." She coughed and sat her half full mug down, ready to let it cool to a more normal temperature before continuing. "Don't think scalding is the way to go."
>"...besides who is going to document the results of the test?"
"Ugh. Please don't." Pictures? Of her? Gross. Noel stuffed an overlarge piece of pineapple into her mouth by way of proof that she was not worth documenting. "Hmm. Can still taste. Maybe not on one spot." She stuck her tongue out and touched around where she thought the boundary of her taste limits currently were. Well. Scalding did work a little then. It still wasn't the solution she was looking for.
As far as vacations went, this one sucked. Technically, it wasn't a vacation, but Nolan had been psyching himself up for his 12 hours of plane travel by pretending it was. On his way down to South America for the pick up, he'd been two rows up from a crying baby. Babies were cute and all, but on an airplane there was nowhere to go to escape.
Which, was sort of the whole reason why he was going for this pick up in the first place.
Lenna Kadick was about to be a Department of Defense asset. Some bargain had been struck that was made by bigger fish than Nolan, now it was his job to make the pick up and make sure it went cleanly. He needed to talk her around by the time they landed otherwise this bargain was moot.
He should ask for a raise.
Nolan had a dossier that told him what she might be like on the outside, but the memory manipulator worked best after he had a little skin to skin touch and a peek through the files in other people's heads. Then, with choice memories he could aim to re-write a little of her history to give his words more effect. It was a delicate balance. Too obvious, and they'd cry foul. Too light handed, and he might not win her over in the 6 hour flight back to NY.
He had a nice layover and a generous stipend for his overnight stay before he turned around and got right back on a plane with his seat planted right next to Lena's.
When it was time, he shuffled down the aisle and put his overnight bag in the overhead compartment.

"Ohhh you are so far gone if you are wasting your time with compliments, Don." Noel did spare a moment to wipe his face on his own collar and smooth down that bit of hair that was standing up before she pulled him upwards and settled her shoulder firmly under his. At first, his shoes didn't seem to want to be flat on the floor. Not because she was tall enough to warrant that. Probably because of the incredible depth of his inebriation. Noel lifted, levered, and wiggled him until he was sort-of almost standing. Good enough.
She snuck the flask out from between his fingers when she was pretty sure he wouldn't notice. Which, really, could have been any time so long as she made no sudden moves. The flask, Noel stuffed into her back pocket. He wouldn't dare go digging around in there for it.
"I will carry you if you don't help me. I don't care how ridiculous it looks." She growled the words, her sympathy fast sliding into annoyance since he didn't even seem to recognize her. "It's me. Noel."
And then all that was left was for them to navigate through a rowdy bar full of people who didn't especially appreciate the man she was juggling.
"Excuse us." Noel hefted the man who was more affectionate limp noodle than helpful. The car was waiting just outside, a dark sedan and driver behind a partition. Anything they said in the back seat would be confidential. With Noel, that could be doubly true.

She debated getting a real drink, but in the end chickened back out to water. Water and stuffing her face with some snacks. Noel hesitated with her hand over the cheese tray when Hadden called out to her. Oh. Busted!
"Yeah. No prob." She continued to hesitate for a few heartbeats more, hand over the food morsels. Had the person preparing them worn gloves? Maybe the inside cuts would be safe anyway if it came from a block. In the end Noel diverted to the crackers, which were so perfectly arranged that they had to have come from a sleeve. Devon didn't give her permission to pick up his memories and he seemed touchy about that. She would avoid anything that might give her secondhand information. She'd gotten lucky when she'd grabbed one before, but now that she was thinking about it, she knew better.
Sprite can in one hand, water bottle in the other, and a few crackers dangling from her lips, Noel came back to take up Hadden's seat. It was now his turn to play Monkey in the Middle and he shamelessly splashed about in a kiddy way that just could not be ignored or shut down. There was joy in being able to just be who you are.
Once Hadden seemed ready, she tossed him his can and got herself settled.
"Not swimming, Svetlana?" Now, having been up out of the water and having walked back and forth, it was plain to see that the scarring on Noel's stomach was far worse than what was on her back. For the most part, she was unmarred so the angry pink puckering of something freshly healed stood out. She crunched into her crackers sans cheese.

"I have more than enough debts to repay." And these bills crisp and flat seemed too small to cover all that. It would have to be enough for now until she figured out the job thing. Puppy One snuffled up under the envelope she was peeking back through. Right. And she still had to figure out the puppy thing.
Land-shark. Noel snorted.
"That all sounds like work." Which, Noel wasn't usually opposed to. She frowned at the puppy and the puppy didn't seem to care one way or the other. It's tongue lolled out and it panted with apparent cheer. It was going to get bigger. Ah. Maybe that was her hang up.
"Getting a pet... two pets... It just seems very permanent." What if she forgot about them? She pulled the puppy in for a hug and let it sniff and lick around her chin until she just couldn't stand it anymore. She pulled it back and smushed it's fluffy cheeks. "And getting a Ranger, too. That's a lot of change for one day."
The only reason this didn't feel wildly out of control was that there were 4 hands to 2 puppies.
"You should keep one. Show me how it's done." That was a good compromise, right? She wouldn't have to return them and she also wouldn't be saddled with feeding two "land-sharks." "Uh. You were kidding, right? About the size?"

The first thing she noticed was that the bar smelled like sick. The sweet tang of stomach acid and fried foods was unmistakeable to Noel who experienced that and worse flavors when someone dared speak with the intent to mislead in her presence. She didn't go out much for that reason. Restaurants and bars were some of the worst offenders for lies. Especially a place like this: a bar full of the best of the worst.
This place was so far below Hadden that she thought she might have the wrong address.
If he'd been talking someone down off a ledge or talking someone up out of their depression, she might have believed it, but Noel didn't see him at all on her way in. Not at the bar. Not on the roof. Not playing pool. Not dancing, if that could be called dancing. This had to be some kind of lame prank meant to besmirch Hadden's honor.
A quick circuit of the patrons and Noel moved to the bar to ask the bartender about her pick up. She didn't see him until he was specifically pointed out to her. On the floor. Nursing a metal flask.
A smile and an apology on his behalf and Noel was really starting to get worried. She squeezed through some people boasting proudly about their unmentionables with boorish confidence and frowned at their lies and the grab someone made at her passing. These things were beneath her as well.
Noel crouched in front of Hadden, irritated and more than a little concerned to observe the state he was in. His clothes rumpled in a disheveled sorry way, dark circles under his eyes, and the neck ruffling stench of whiskey. He wasn't drunk. He was pickled. Noel held up the hand she had used to shake the bartender's hand like the threat it was as she licked each finger purposefully. Noel’s eyes dilated and glazed over as she ran backwards through the bartender's evening at super speeds. He hadn't been watching 'Don’ as closely at the beginning of the evening, but at the end he was.
“I can't even keep up counting your drinks.” Was that awe or disgust she was feeling? Noel shook her head and let the memories drop as she caught sight of Devon Haddon puking backwards back into his mouth. That had to be extra gross going forwards, but seeing it in reverse as she was it was a little humorous at least.
“So here you are at rock bottom, huh? I'd ask what put you here, but you almost looked like you were having fun." Noel offered the man a hand, ready to pull him up and support him through. A more serious concern was why she, specifically, had been called to come here, but that could wait for a more private setting. He might not even know right now, he seemed so beyond his normal and controlled state.
"I have an car and driver waiting outside.” Noel spared a glance for the pool table that no one was using. There was a reason for the dark stain at it's center. She couldn't make this many people unsee that.

"Ostentatious. Boundary issues." Noel reiterated as she shuffled a puppy off her lap so that she could open up the envelope. Cash. Perfect.
"I must have a sign on my back that says 'purchase presents for me that will be more work than worth.' I don't know what a plane is worth, but I'm gonna guess it's all here." Now she could buy a few things herself and not be beholden to Haven entirely... though... she wondered about what it might take to invest...
Troubles for another day.
Today's troubles were trying to untie her shoelaces with their teeth. At least one of them. The one snuffling around Ranger seemed somehow more calm. He offered to help... she needed way more than help.
"How...? What do you do with these things? Like the petting, yeah. I could get behind that." Noel picked one of them up and tried her best to look it over. It was a little thing, mostly black but with some socks of color. The paws were rather large looking, probably why it tripped so often. It's little tail was so chubby and cute.

She appreciated his willingness to clear her apartment. She did not appreciate how squirmy the puppies were. Apparently that wasn't the best way to hold them. One retaliated by starting to whizz. With a cry of 'dammit' Noel dropped one and dashed to the bathroom toilet with the other, unsure of what other option she had at that point.
"No. There's not really a story." She called out from the bathroom. "I told him to grow up and get a dog? I don't know, I guess I know a lot of ostentatious people who have boundary issues. Oh! If the puppies were here, maybe he sold my plane." Noel dropped the fluffy floof and flushed on its behalf. Little heathen.
Aaaand then she turned and despaired at the trail of whizz behind her.
"This might be payback for my smart mouth." Noel grabbed a towel and dropped it to kick around on top of the whizz trail. Was the FRONT DOOR STILL OPEN!? She ran, danced over a puppy, and slammed the door in puppy #2's face. How did people have small creatures? This was insane.
Noel ducked into the puppy cage and pulled up the bedding in order to pull out a large padded envelope. Okay. So the puppies were a carrier for other business. That at least made some sense.
The puppies, once they spotted someone on the ground, ran over and tried to shower Noel with love and licks and excited yips. As irritated as she was at their continued existence, she did melt a little around the edges and gave in to petting and rough housing.
"I'm not convinced he realizes that puppies are a continued maintenance gift." Two. Jesus. What was she going to do with two of them?
Oh he had his driver on speed dial. Noel resisted the urge to roll her eyes because she'd learned that was incredibly rude and that was the last thing she wanted to be to her friend.
"I'mma let that slide this once 'cause I'm in a good mood. Otherwise, you should try to schlub it like us plebs once in awhile. Here." Noel stopped spinning her phone in order to unlock it and open her photo gallery.
"Would you like to see what havok your delivery wrought?" She grinned. Had she been mad at first? Yeah. People really needed to stop buying her things.
Noel's phone had pictures and pictures and pictures. Puppies. Puppies. More puppies. A couch arm that had been nibbled through. Some kind of dinner attempt that was a solid block of noodles. More Puppies. She would let him scroll around. She didn't have anything incriminating if you excluded the fail of a dinner.
She accepted the flight of moonshine with more than a little wariness. High proof liquor, Hades, and a bar. What could go wrong?
"I was going to get some moonshine, actually. Not this, though." She eyed the reddish liquor and knew deep down in her heart that she wouldn't back down from any challenge, especially one that might in some way solve her problem.
"I want to find a way to disable my abilities." She explained. "You know, The tasting part." She stuck out her tongue and pointed at it. Just in case he'd forgotten how she took in memories and deciphered lies.
Noel speared a pineapple chunk and munched. "Hot tea for scalding, pineapple for the acid? I guess? The internet said if I eat a bunch of fresh pineapple it can mess with my taste buds. Moonshine and cheap whiskey are on the list. I think they might have some of that here." Noel flicked her eyes up to Hades' and she noticed his attention to her bag.
"I have some items in here, to test if it's working." That way she didn't have to make out with anyone while under the influence. Clearly, Noel had thought ahead.
"Thanks for coming out. I was hoping I wouldn't have to drink alone." Though she was the only one with moonshine... "Are you sure you don't want one of these?" But really, Noel was just putting off scalding her tongue. SHe wasn't looking forward to it, exactly. With a sigh she went to pour them both tea before it cooled too much.

Apparently making things "MyFace Official" meant they upgraded from holding hands to holding themselves a fair bit closer. No matter the door navigation or the elevator or the fact that Noel had to free herself enough to type in her code could keep them from walking in tandem.
When the door opened and two little black balls of floof stumbled over their paws in over to escape from her apartment, Noel did elect to let her Ranger go. The puppies came snuffling around with enough enthusiasm to nearly bowl Noel over, but more than that, she went on high alert.
"I don't have puppies." They were cute for small bears, but she didn't. have. puppies.
A thought was bubbling up. A memory, hers since it only went in real time.
Despite the fact that it may not have been spoken outloud in decades, Noel used his full Chinese name like a curse word and pulled out her phone to fire off a text message. There were exclamation points and question marks involved. It was sort of a heat of the moment kind of text.
"I know a man who can walk through walls," Noel raised her voice and with her foot nudged one puppy back toward the doorway, And if he is in there, he'd better get out before security comes.."
Oh shoot! Weren't there 2 puppies just a second ago? Noel's panic at the thought of someone being in her apartment downgraded enough that she left the doorway ajar in order to chase down the second one. She scooped it up and then grabbed for the second one as it too squirted past her defenses and attempted freedom.
Inside Noel's apartment was a crate that had once had a door, the latch was long since spent.
Could someone return puppies? Noel marched herself into her apartment with a squiggling canine in each arm.
"He won't-" kill anybody? Heh. Noel stopped that train of thought before it got out of her mouth. "He has better things to do than be here. 99% sure this is a... present from a friend."

Was there maniacal laughter? Only on the inside.
Noel tried to practice absolute control when handling a weapon. So what if it was little more joyous to do when the man she liked handed her a cadillac of a handgun? It turned out to be over the top, yes; but for once it was over the top in all the ways she could actually appreciate.
"You did something to the trigger." There wasn't a single part of that SIG that didn't seem altered in some way, but the trigger was what had felt most different. Noel was happy to talk guns and ammunition the entire way back to Haven. He was more knowledgeable by far, but she knew enough to contribute at least. Especially where it came to her personal preferences.
He found her hand for the walk back from the garage, something that was happening more and more and becoming more and more natural. She found herself feeling just right about today, despite all the frustrations.
> ”Want t’ be MyFace official?”
She tugged him forward, wishing that he hadn't stopped and that they could keep moving so she didn't have to look at him and his earnest eyes.
"What does that mean, exactly." She didn't sound closed to the idea, just.. cautious.
"The kids say that y' ain't official 'til y're MyFace official. I'm not sayin' t' go around shoutin' anythin' or stickin' it online... Just askin' if y'd like us t' be more than just two people who runnin' around havin' fun... I sound like a seventeen-year-old right now don't I?"
As much as she'd wanted to interrupt him and make this into something serious or maybe even to put him out of his misery, it was a tiny bit more fun to watch him dig that hole deeper and deeper. Noel did eventually have to take mercy on poor Michael. She just liked him too damn much not to.
"You mean I could say things like 'my Ranger' and we could have a standing reservation at the plastic cowboy dance hall?"
"Got it in one."
This time when she tugged his hand he did take a step. She'd stopped trying to pull him along and instead pulled him into her. She went from soaring to sinking when she realized that she wanted this. And that she might never be able to be what Michael needed or wanted. Noel slid her arms around him without the excuse of helping him into his belt.
"Yeah. I'd like that." She touched his face, smudge free. For now it was back to soaring. "I have ten million more questions about that... this. Why don't you come over cook me something?" Presumptuous? Yeah. But not even Noel wanted to eat what she could cook.
