The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was good and bad that he was busy. Noel had just gotten back and sh wasn’t sure how to fit back in. Maybe she shouldn’t even bother since there were a few sticking points on the horizon...
Of course he wanted to know how bad was bad going to be? Noel gave up on mixing her veggies around the plate and just pushed it away. Bad enough that her usual unfillable pit of a stomach was churning. This was the real test. The fire that would temper or melt down this weird limbo of a relationship they had.
Dammit snuggled herself firmly against Noel’s legs by way of moral puppy support.
"I don't know for sure. It’s good that I know it’s happening. I can make some extra room and make sure my notes are up to date. I’ll try to preserve what I have, and at worst there's... I have notes about everything you know?" He knew. Once she'd let him snoop over her shoulder and he'd teased her in his good humored way about her comments on her favorite things about him. Just remembering had her turning pink and shifting to sneak a pet in to her puppy.
Ew. Banana. Noel wouldn't call their friendship over some bananas, but only because she was feeling pretty generous. Also, she was sort of squatting in Sveta's apartment. It'd be pretty damn rude to talk crap and then continue to squat.
"Syrup too?" She reclaimed the flyer. Looks like it came on the side. Meh. She just wouldn't use hers.
After a little back and forth, Sveta managed to clear the couch and let Noel know that the dog was okay to go up. Lucky dog. Noel assumed she was allowed too, but let Dammit go first. There really was nothing like puppy cuddles and Noel wasn't a good comforter. Not as good as Dammit was, anyway. Not by a mile.
> "Don't your boyfriend have a spare key?"
"Yeah, I'll have to wait for him to get back. He's a big, busy boss man. Got places to be and things to do. You know." She stood and dusted herself off before pulling out her phone. Noel was feeling the strain of not seeing him a ton lately, but that was silly. She'd had years and years without.
"I'll call it in. Dammit shouldn't pee on anything. She did that in the hallway already." Noel pointed at the puppy who was making herself at home, tongue lolling and tail wagging.
Jerk.
Noel took a few steps into the kitchen and made the call. On impulse she added an order of chocolate milk big enough for both of them and a plain kid's waffle for the pup. 15 minutes give or take some delivery time. There. Food was procured in the kitchen, just as it should be.
"So..." Ohhhh. Here it came. The whole mental health check in friendship touchstone something or another that she had never really mastered. At least the couch was clean enough for Noel to sink down onto it."Why didn't you punch that girl who was following you?"

That guy that caused the rip? Noel leaned forward in her conference room chair. This wasn't the conference room. There wasn't anyone to intimidate so there was no reason to set up shop in the big one lined with guns. This room was smaller with a nice round wooden table that had seen use. Perfect for this.
Noel didn't have any idea that there'd been a single person behind the portal between worlds. They'd certainly seen the lead up to it happening with the time anomaly ripples. Everything Muse said, she believed, though. Noel wouldn't take brainwashing out of the equation until she was done. Her eyes flicked to Tempest's as he watched out the window. Noel really hoped that Muse wasn't properly brainwashed. She seemed in control of herself ever since they'd met and she had been in a closet.
"You are an asset." Noel, had she been in that position, would have done the same, but probably without any attempt at trickery. "But more importantly, you're a friend." That was the important part, really. Noel didn't go to war for assets. Not anymore.
Noel nearly dropped the waffle menu when Dammit yanked on the lead. Noel made the puppy sit and then decided to occupy the spot beside the puppy on the floor since Sveta was still shoveling out a spot on the couch.
"You joke, but this magnificent creature has already proven that she cannot be trusted with doors. She is supposed to stay in her kennel when I'm out. Now the kennel door won't stay shut. She's bent the dang latch." All the while Noel ruffled puppy ears and rewarded Dammit's decision to sit nicely. How could she not with that puppy face?
Noel maintained a healthy amount of skepticism, but the outside thing was pretty funny.
"Almost punched, huh?" It tasted true that Sveta had been outside, but the memorymancer woods not have guessed it based on the state of the apartment. Since she didn't particularly want to go out, Noel decided not to play the issue.
And Noel knew just what she wanted as far as waffles.
"Belgian Waffles with strawberries and cream." Noel leaned over to pass the menu to Sveta and then started to go through her pockets. "What do you want? My treat. I have... Maybe a hundred bucks still on me so the sky's the limit." Noel would refrain, however, from ordering cereal milk. As interesting as it was to see it on a menu, it still sounded gross.
"My door's got a numpad in case I don't have the key. Some days not even that's enough." Noel followed Dammit around the living room, scoping out the corners and under boxes and bags and dirty clothes. The place looked like hell. Noel couldn't remember if she was a tidy or slobbish person, but it didn't really bother her. It just made her realize that her friend was keeping herself in this hell.
The blonde showed off her own stack of take out flyers. New York really was the best for food. Not that Noel had anything to compare to.
"Oh dang. Waffles? Chinese, Asian Fusion? Whatever that is..." She shuffled through the stack and plucked out a few hopefuls including gourmet waffles. There was something about waffles that was just... home.
"Are we gonna talk about you not going outside or is this something I'm supposed to ignore?" It would be best if she could just get it out of the way now.

Noel wasn't sure she'd seen Hadden in his hero suit before, but when he stepped through the doorway she recognized him almost immediately. Maybe it was the hair. She continued putting pressure on the back of Nolan's head and watched the back and forth between her friends. Why did it always feel like she'd been caught doing something she shouldn't when Hadden showed up?
"SUPER had them both tagged with subdermal trackers. We asked Blair to rehouse those in something squirmy." That was the most she could say about Blair's hunt. The truth tended to be less sensational than it sounded sometimes. She didn't want Hadden, or Tempest, as he was dressed, to misunderstand.
"Sorry for the no notice." Despite everything it'd turned out alright. If it hadn't... Noel shook her head at herself and the situation they'd evaded. She was glad it didn't go wrong. Noel working with this world's government was bad enough. Removing her copy from SUPER made this an even bigger win.
> "His name is Nolan. He is important to SUPER. Also, he... is the other side's version of Noel. But he's an awful person. Like an evil twin."
Well. She did postulate that all the copies on the other side were evil... Noel raised an eyebrow at Tempest. This was strike 2 for the other universe.
"Sveta was in a training facility. She got a text to me while I was over the rift taking care of some personal business. I recruited the help of an X-man for help. I don't suggest any of the three of us go back over." And she sure as heck didn't know what to do with Nolan. For now, she was checking the bit of cloth she'd shoved up against the cut she made to remove his trace. It wasn't clotted, but the cut wasn't free flowing either. Noel put her hands on the table on either side of her unconscious copy's head.
"I—" It was difficult to articulate why she'd grabbed Nolan. Maybe later she could. For now she'd put the conversation back in Sveta's hands. "I'm glad they don't have you. Wanna start at the top, Sveta?" Noel spared a glance at her copy, but figured they were better off not having this conversation right on top of him. "There's a conference room down the hall. Welcome to Blac-Tac, by the way."

Doggy Einstein was nipping at her sister's ear and Reveille wasn't taking that, even from Dammit.
Noel was more concerned with helping to pick up the trashed novel instead of stopping a puppy scuffle. "It wasn't sentimental, was it?" He said it had travelled Europe, she had to guess he meant that it'd traveled with him. While Noel understood the concept of sentimentality, the practice of getting sentimental about things seemed a bit silly. Things could be taken away so easily. They were only things.
Dammit shouldn't have done that.
She should have watched her closer.
She just had to learn from this and move on... unless it was sentimental. Then she'd have to make up for it somehow.
And again... they just couldn't leave those puppies alone for a second.
"DAMMIT." Her voice was a whip that made the puppy stop right where she was on her hind legs. One leg was forepaw poised to jump all the way up onto the seat at the table. Her nose was pointed directly at the plate, as if what was left of that steak was just waiting for Dammit to resume her leisurely dinner.
Or maybe the book destruction was a ruse... Noel narrowed her eyes and made the hand motion for Dammit to sit.
She sat.
Maybe the dog really was smart.
Having helped with the last bits of paper, Noel all but melted back into her chair at the table and found that she hardly had the energy to finish. She wanted to just melt all the way down to the floor. All the stress was threatening to be too much. Instead, Noel tugged a bit of fat from her plate and slipped it to Dammit since she'd been so good in the last 2 seconds. The little bear curled up on top of her feet with her treat.
"So. How was your day, honey?" How much of a parody could they make this dinner?
Sveta opened the door to a very confused Noel. "Is eating the puppy an option? Dammit, come back here." The puppy had bumbled forward, too big for her own paws, and snaked between Sveta and the door in order to make a break for the open pizza boxes. Noel's voice cut in with her command before the puppy had a real shot at reaching anything, and Dammit stopped with a whine. The puppy obeyed. She took her dear sweet time (there were lots of things to sniff!) and whined once she saw Noel's face (complaints were lodged), but her stub of a tail did start wagging again when she got pets. Relieved that they wouldn't be wrestling over some questionable pizza, Noel ruffled Dammit's face with affection.
For all her faults and strong will, Noel still liked the troublemaker.
"Yeah." The puppy, for better or for worse, was Noel's responsibility. "I didn't ask for her, but she was a... gift from someone I can't really say no to. I guess she's alright, but I feel bad. I've been out a lot lately. She does help me know that time has passed even if I don't have the memories to prove it. This thing just keeps getting bigger." Dammit leaned against Noel's shin in a whiny plea to be set free in this new space as they entered the apartment together. Noel kept a better hold of Dammit's lead just to be extra sure she wouldn't run off again.
> "Um... what do we eat?"
"I was gonna suggest we go somewhere, but... that really sounds like effort." Plus with the pizza boxes and the pajamas, it didn't look like Sveta had actually gone out of the living room, let alone the apartment.
"I don't cook, so... Order in some Indian food?" The best part about New York was the myriad choices they had and so many of them delivered. "I have a menu from one of my favorites..." In her apartment, she realized. Noel groaned in disappointment. "iiiiin my apartment, which I can't get into right now. I keep my takeout leaflets in the oven." What better place for them? She certainly wasn't using the oven to cook.

No. Ranger didn't just fall off the truck, but these people were born and bred manipulators, if Nolan was any reflection on the rest of the organization. Noel had faith in Ranger's discernment and total mistrust of SUPER and wasn't used to feeling so at war with herself about things. But a SUPER, working at Haven? She did have opinions on that.
"He's here? She was ready to go find and harass the secrets out of him. Like. Right now.
Dammit had other plans.
> ”The puppies are too quiet.”
The bottom dropped out of Noel's stomach. There were a hundred and ten million things (approximately) that she did not want Dammit to get into in here and she'd been wrapped up in talking. Noel hadn't noticed that Dammit wasn't at her usual spot begging for scraps. She was being an irresponsible pet owner and inattentive and— she cringed on the book's behalf when Dammit dropped the book and backed away, thoroughly chastened. Sometimes Dammit seemed to think getting in trouble was a game. Sometimes she seemed incredibly remorseful for a puppy. Like now.
Noel called her over and made her sit far, far away from Ranger's mangled book.
"Is it a goner?" He'd introduced her to the Perry Hotter series recently. She was skeptical going into The Magician's Rock since it was a children's book, but it was enjoyable enough and it helped her answer more than a few pop culture things. Apparently these books had been all the rage a few years back. "Is that the next one I'm supposed to read? Not that there's been a ton of time to be reading lately."
Noel ran her hands through her hair, totally derailed from the SUPER issue. She could get Ranger a new book. How was he supposed to read with her if he didn't have a copy...? "I'm sorry. Dammit. Say you're sorry." Dammit laid down for about 2 seconds before popping back up and sniffing at a passing Revvie. Ok. So she wasn't that sorry...

Her cries of "Dammit, noooooo!" echoed around on the fancy-schmancy stone of Haven's halls. Noel really hoped deep down in her heart that fancy stone was not porous. "You do that outside! Outside, Dammit!" Mortified, she did her best to clean what she could with what she had, but eventually she called security so that they could get ahold of whoever did the cleaning. They needed an emergency cleaning. Now.
Annnnd to top it all off, it was dinner time. She'd totally spaced on their lunch plans. With their tight schedules lately, Noel had been doing her best to meet Ranger halfway. Just as he'd been trying to accommodate her. They would squeeze visits in here and there, maybe with Noel staying late to let the dogs play here and there. Noel texted an apology to Ranger and went to unlock her door.
And went to unlock her door.
His birthday was in February, wasn't it?
Noel let her head fall forward against her locked apartment. Ranger wouldn't be back for a bit. She could call security. Again. But she'd already had to call about her snuffly little puppy making a mess out by the elevators.
It was time, officially she decided, to throw a pity party. Knowing that misery loved company and that there was one person in particular that was especially miserable these days, Noel went to knock on Muse's door.

He got them drinks. She hadn't even considered it since she didn't have to worry about lies. Not here, anyway.
"What would you do if you saw her again?" Noel wasn't sure what she would do if there was a rematch... no. Actually, she did. She'd just have to make sure to start carrying again. Or do what was in her power to keep that from happening. That was probably the better option.
The sounds coming from Noel weren't obscene, they were appreciative. She had a new flavor to compare the varying degrees of truth to, she was sure. There was nothing more right than a good steak cooked just so. She shoveled as much food as she could while Ranger digested her last few days worth of escapades. The sad truth was that she'd gotten lucky. Really, really lucky.
> ”Bird put him in ‘the room’?”
"Didn't even know you had one. Was really glad you did, though." Gamble after gamble had paid off. She should go for Vegas right now while she was on fire. Noel stopped to breathe and chew. Those were both things too difficult to accomplish while talking and she had more to say.
> ”Brainwashing… have t’ limit access t’ him then.”
"I haven't done anything with him except cleaned him of his trace. I'd run him over with a really strong magnet before we get too self-congratulatory, but I did my best to clean up after that mess. And, Michael, I got lucky that I didn't have to nuke my brain to get out of there, but I expect some confusion after rolling through Nolan's head. Plus there's the upcoming mission for Haven... you haven't seen anything too bad from me. But my memory is about to get worse. Who knows what I'll dig out about SUPER, on top of all that."
> ”Speakin’ of gettin’ intel about SUPER. I recruited an agent who went rogue.”
She tried not to spit and ended up inhaling weird and doubling over with the resulting cough.
"You what? Where is this agent? How do you know he's a rogue and not a plant?" Geez. This man was entirely too trusting. Noel was already getting to her feet so she could go find this person.

Only the hearts that mattered? But that meant that she mattered... 'cause that food was for her too. She tried to stop the smile that was spreading. Silly that just a few words made warm fuzzies. And even sillier that she couldn't seem to help it. It just happened. She didn't like that it was seemingly out of her control, but as far as things that had involuntarily happened to Noel, at least this one was nice.
> ”An’ now the Fedwhacker is here on our side?"
Noel grabbed a plate as instructed. She didn't have to be told twice. She did have to tell Dammit 'no' twice, though. There was no way Noel was sharing.
"Right. I dropped Combatant off before I took us to Blac-Tac. No sense in leading her back to you. It's not personal, but... I dunno. Seems like it could grow to be."
Sinking into a chair at the table, Noel realized that Ranger was assuming her copy was a girl on top of all the victim assumptions. Oh boy. She waited until he had a fork in transit to his mouth before dropping that bomb. She didn't want him to choke.
"My copy's name is Nolan and I guess he can brainwash people. He was working for SUPER, which was the facility that was holding Muse. So. Rescue is probably not the most correct term. I would like to pick his brain for SUPER information, he knows a lot, but I really grabbed him for selfish reasons. He's me. There's a chance he knows more about me than me, assuming that our parents are the same... that kind of stuff."
Was this a weird conversation to be having over dinner? She didn't know how else to get that information out there though.

> "Do we crush it?"
Noel spared a glance for the tracker still sitting on the table. Muse was getting her stitches, Noel had her hands up her copy's shirt. It was harder to find a tracker that was year ago planted. Somehow this felt like giving her unconscious copy a massage.
> "It might be better to throw them in the river or get them moving somehow."
"What about a stray?" Noel ran her hands over Nolan's back one last time. It didn't seem to be in the same place. She rolled him back over. Could Muse help? Err... probably not a good idea for her to touch him, actually. Plus she was getting her stitches. "Any ideas, Muse? I can't find it."
> "Was thinking it'd be easier to find some varmint, yeah."
Blair tied off his stitches. Noel still hadn't found the tracer on Nolan.
"You think you can catch something squirmy enough to give 'em hell?" She made please, please eyes at the former special ops man and reached out to nudge Sveta to do the same, but stopped once she realized that would be touching and touching would be a no go.
He didn't look like he wanted to, but he also didn't look like he had a better idea.
> "Rip and stitch on a power booster, tracker chips, and now I'm off catching raccoons? Today's not really going like I thought it would."
Noel looked at Muse, a knowing look, before looking down at her copy's face. It was her. If she'd been a man, if her government job hadn't fallen through, if she hadn't had so many trip-ups in New York... It was her. But they definitely weren't the same.
"Yeah. Weird night." She felt along behind his ears and around his skull until she thought she might have something. A little cut and she imitated what Blair had done before passing both little chips over. It wasn't easy to put pressure on a rounded area like a skull, but Noel tried. Nolan was going to have one hell of a hangover anyway after that Muse hit.
> "I'll send Mr. Hadden in when he arrives." Blair left them alone.
"I want you to tell me about what happened, but... I guess we should wait for Hadden so you're not telling it twice."
That one? Noel ducked, for all the good it would do her, and nearly dropped Nolan. She had to stretch up to reach the keys while Sveta returned fire, but she was pretty sure she got the key for the correct parking spot. Noel hesitated before leaving the box of keys behind. She saw a few fobs that allowed for remote engine starting...
A car engine revved to life and the lavamancer split his focus between where the girls moved and the new, and empty, threat. It was enough for Muse to peg him with the gun, not enough to take him 100% down. Nolan got dumped in the trunk. He was probably safer for it based on the way Muse had whalloped him earlier. Everyone piled in and they rammed the car in front of them.
"I am not the best driver." Noel admitted as she put them in reverse and just barely tapped the car behind them. Lavaman was suddenly there in front of the front bumper, looking terrible and wholly worse for wear. Noel hit the accelerator and there was a distinct bump, bump and the smell of burning rubber. Maybe literally.
She popped a curb to avoid the deployed emergency barriers and plowed through a chainlink fence some 20 yards to the East of a checkpoint. Distantly, she heard gunshots, but they'd clearly been expecting them to go through the gate and not to be driving through a forest. It was bumpy driving on an unpaved surface at breakneck speeds, but somehow they managed it all the way to the rip.
All the way through the rip too.
Next week they would have something more substantial up besides the temporary tents and barriers and a few people that they probably shouldn't have plowed through.
Noel woven through a few streets to get her bearings and then found a place to parallel park and have a moment to freak out and see if they had any kind of tail.
Noel went for some paper towels and a spare set of clothes from her stash. Once they were ready, she set up shop so that she pull Blair away should he need the help. He wasn't nervous. Alpha team members didn't seem to be capable to that. Noel imagined that his hesitation was due to him thinking through each step before he ever took the first one.
> "Okay. Here we go." He touched Muse's back and pushed with his fingers in an attempt to feel whatever they were looking for. He tripped up only briefly as his powers activated. Walls of force shimmered into existence just inside the real walls. Should they have needed to keep someone in, Noel supposed this was the best guy to do the job.
When Noel looked back, he'd already cut into Muse's back and was murmuring through what he was doing probably just so nothing would surprise her.
> "Boots, get ready." He scraped the back of the knife along her skin, pushing a fresh gush of blood through the little incision and soon after, a little... thing. With a little wire attached. If Noel had to give it a name it looked a bit like a transistor.
Boots, it seemed, would forever be her call sign here. Noel moved to catch it. She ended up having to trap it against Muse's back which meant they were touching and her eyes started to vibrate as her power activated without a target.
"Got it." Blair was putting pressure on the spot and following up with ice. Noel set the tracker on the table next to the unconscious Nolan. All she had to do was keep her eyes down until they stopped freaking out. No big deal.
> "Not too shabby. I can stitch that once or twice if you want to be sure."
Noel would let Muse answer that. She was already rolling Nolan over and pulling his shirt out of his pants so they could check his back. "I'd rather not get into his head tonight. I need to debrief before all this gets overwritten."
> "You need me to do him too?"
"Actually, we have one more coming. Maybe by air? Maybe by car? Devon Hadden. If you don't know him by sight, I have a picture on my phone. Also, we don't really care this guy gets hurt." She tugged his shirt up and was surprised by a hefty amount of bruising and scars. It only gave her a moment's pause.
