The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

When her alarm went off, Noel pushed herself up as far as her arms would allow and yawned. Noel struggled to get mentally awake to the tune of some country something. For that, she could only think to blame the Ranger. Five more minutes sounded like heaven, but she knew down that path lay danger. She fantasized briefly about falling asleep at the top of her plank, but knew something would give out. It wouldn't work like it did in her head.
She did this to herself, so she only had herself to blame.
Noel shuffled about with her eyes mostly closed. She hadn't undressed. Her arm was a tingly army of ants from passing out on top of it. Where were those eggs? At least she'd gone to bed with her hair in a braid. She fumbled her phone off and tried to remember what they were doing now.
Oh right. Sunglasses. Noel grabbed those up so that she didn't have to pretend she was blind.

Noel picked at the banana overnight and otherwise waited in the dark to get the drop on anyone who made sounds around their door.
Nobody even tried.
Eventually, the Ranger started shifting around in the way that the recently-dead rose. She scooted closer to watch him in the bare blush of sunlight since he was the most interesting thing that had happened all night. Eyelashes, nose, he had all the regular face parts. He was familiar enough from walking up the aisle and dancing at the reception, but was he as familiar as the notes made him sound? Not really.
Time had both dragged and gone by quick in the funny way that time sometimes did. She was rubbing her tired eyes when Michael actually transitioned back to the land of the living.
"You got a solid 8, I think, but we've also changed time zones so maybe that's 9? Not a peep from outside." She abandoned her phone to the floor and went to claw her way up to the top bunk, avoiding eye contact like her life depended on it since the sunglasses were in the wind.
"Just 3 hours left unless we cross another time change." She honestly had no idea where those happened. Seemed like a whole bunch of nonsense considering the technology they had. "Phone will go off an hour before for freshening and whatever."
She faceplanted into a stale smelling pillow and didn't even bother with the sheets. "See you in a sec."

"I want first shift." Not exactly a lie, but he seemed worse off. Noel could deal and she would let him rest for as long as it took, circadian rhythms and fairness be damned. She also told him to eat the last sandwich.
"You are, like, five times as swol as me and there's still eggs." Which she was sure she couldn't stomach at the moment anyway. There was plenty of food in the world, she'd eat later.
Once he seemed settled, Noel sat on their little stretch of floor and fiddled with her phone to set an alarm. The screen light made her head hurt, but she was interested and hadn't yet had time to explore what was on her hand held. It looked pretty standard: a calendar with notes that stopped almost a week back, maps, photos with friends and her dog, and music. One playlist was named "songs that mean something" and it seemed promising for later.
The Ranger snuffled in his restful state. Noel closed her eyes to listen to the train and the sounds around them. She thought forwards and backwards and poked at anything that seemed out of place. She hadn't wanted to sleep until she was absolutely sure no memories could be saved. It was looking like that was true. She would love to dig in the Ranger's head too, just to be sure. If he'd allow it.
What she had now was a handful of strangers that felt like family, and 5 years of New York city living: a time that included getting let go from her previous government employment.
She hadn’t told them that.
The dossier they had on her painted a picture like Noel had been on their payroll the entire time. Like she’d been living a second shadow life parallel to the memories she actually remembered. Did she trust them? Did she trust the paper? Did she trust her memory?
She ended up taking the pain pills he left her. She fiddled with the vodka bottle, but left it unopened. She dug around in her bag to familiarize herself with what was in there.
It was blessedly boring and the floor was just uncomfortable enough to keep her awake through it. Nothing to it.
The outside light waned from what little she could see around the drawn shade, and Noel let the cabin dip into darkness.

Noel ripped off her blindfold when the Ranger started huffing and puffing. A gas? She didn't smell anything, nor did she seem affected. A dart of some kind? She turned to make sure he made it to sit, but he'd already gotten himself some juice. Not looking him in the face was difficult considering, but there was plenty else to check. Only, nothing seemed wrong with him except that suddenly it was like he'd run in a race.
Noel prowled on red alert, checking the windows and the door, but... there was nothing.
"Chalk it up to all the other math that doesn't add up, I guess."
She stretched to test the limits of her bandage and rubbed her palm across her eyebrows forcing her to relax her face and release tension. There was no threat that she could guard against here. "Okay. One more shopping trip, then."
It wasn't long before Noel was back, sunglasses on and a few necessities in hand. "It's gas station quality, but when there's something screwy with a mutation, it seems to take food to fix it." A couple packages of boiled eggs in plastic, three ham sandwiches, a banana, two waters and a diet soda. She let Ranger pick and then went to lock their door and check the room all over again. This time she thought to check their phones and turn both on airplane mode. There had to be something else she was forgetting.
"We have time, but I don't want to miss our stop." As much as she'd like to continue pacing, she was aching. Noel eased down on what she'd started to think of as the Ranger's bunk, having decided to claim the top bunk for herself, and debated how bad it'd be to take shifts. Could they both afford to rest now? Noel noticed her laptop was open nearby. She'd left it unlocked, told him he was allowed to read... she'd left off on a methodical journal entry on her search for a way to stop tasting things which wasn't incriminating in and of itself.

Once he moved from knife to towel, Noel figured it was safe to take out the ear plugs.
The tracker might have been gone, but she didn't quite feel the relief she was expecting. Instead, she got a firm butt smack.
> "Good game."
She cringed as the shockwave went up her back, but supposed that was only fitting. She had started it by proxy kissing his ass, and it wasn't gay if you said good game. Besides, she’d gotten to deck him and pants him and Ranger had neither option.
"I’m gonna let that slide because I don’t like beating up cripples while blindfolded. Tends to be a real ego hit on both sides. Maybe next time, though. Have any idea what you want to do with these?" She moved slowly, leaving her blindfold on for now as she dug out the little bead of Michael's tracker from her pocket and offered it out in front of her in the palm of her hand.
No doubt, he probably wanted to do exactly what Noel wanted to do: curl up on the bunk and doze off. They could put it off, but it negated the point to carry them around.

Uh yeah. She not only owed him dinner, she owed him the dignity of helping him with his pants. Noel ran, fetched, and carried, dealing with keys and phones and anything else they needed moved.
Then, you know, the totally non-ominous call that it was her turn.
She wanted to be brave and calm, she wanted to trust him, but most of all she really didn't want to throw up today. It'd been a close call once, if not twice, already.
"Just in case" She explained as she grabbed up the little trash can from their space.
Between them they managed to get Noel's eyes covered and her ears plugged, and Noel finger combed her hair and worked a quick braid. Over engineering at its finest. She, at least, got to keep her clothes the whole time. Though they did shimmy her jeans down low and cover the cloth with a clean bit of towel, she wasn't about to freeze like the Ranger had.
She folded her arms under her head and tried, and failed, not to knot her shoulders up in anticipation of what was to come.
"Okay. Ready." She couldn't hear any response, but she had to trust there was one.

O-kay. Not the face. With Ranger on his front and the whole expanse of his back there was plenty else to work with. Maybe not lower back and probably not where she wanted to cut. Noel moved to kneel around the Ranger's legs and wondered how they got into such ridiculousness.
The bottle had hit hard, she'd gotten the first smack, afterall. She knew just how hard that hurt. If that'd been her face, she'd have a black eye by now. His face seemed fine, but her shoulder was still smarting. So she needed to hit about that hard, she guessed. She wasn't sure how fast she needed to cut him afterward so she tried to have everything in its place and ready.
"I'm sorry in advance."
The angle isn't great when punching down unless you really get your entire body weight into it. Noel circled her arm and dropped her weight to put some oomph behind a hammer fist in the meat of the Ranger's back. His ribs should protect him if his mysterious power did not, she doubted it was enough to break one. But it was a solid smack.
And she scrabbled immediately for the knife, trying to go fast but still precise. Noel put her finger down hard to keep the tracker from rolling around and cut. His skin sliced this time and all Noel had to do was guide the little bead out through the hole she'd made. Almost like popping a really big pimple. A slurry of blood followed and Noel traded knife for towel. The bead, she dropped into her pocket for the time being.
"Hanging in there?" She'd thought the leather strap a bit silly at first. A good, sharp knife and you hardly feel a thing. It was a little different than she'd imagined, but it worked in the end.
Noel made quick work of the antiseptic and the bandage. As an afterthought she kissed her hand and gave his backside a pat before she helped guide whatever clothes he wanted back into place.

"Not only am I delaying the inevitable, I'm enjoying it." He was a good little patient and had waited for her. She fumbled the knife when he tossed out the hillbilly bit. She had to set it aside anyway to disinfect so she tried to make that fumble look at least a little intentional. No one got stabbed, anyway, so it was fine.
Noel imitated the Ranger in cleaning her hands.
"I don't remember ever taking one of these out, but it's not deep. It shouldn't take but a second." Which were, of course, famous last words.
Noel started by kneeling next to the buttocks in question. Gloves on, towel at the ready. She gave him a slice and... nada. Maybe she'd been a bit too hesitant. She put a hand on his goosebump-covered skin and tried harder. And even harder.
"Are you... knife-proof?" She was joking because that was ridiculous. Nobody was knife-proof. That didn't even make sense. Maybe it wasn't sharp? Noel started to test it against her glove, but thought better and sliced cleanly through a bit of towel. Uh. "Is there a safety on the knife?" By now the Ranger was positively turning blue. They kept the train a comfortable temperature to someone who was used to paying for their own heat, which was to say that in the north east, in winter, a poor little Texas lad was out of his element.
Ice? Did ice and numbing make sense? It was some kind of defense, right? Noel wracked her brain for a moment as the train bumped along. The vodka bottle that had been securely away from the edge had enough and danced its way off, bouncing off of Noel's shoulder and went right for Ranger's face. She dropped the knife and caught the little glass bottle on the bounce.
After more than a few apologies, she noticed a tiny little cut on Ranger's side where she'd dropped the knife. The heck...?
"Are you... allergic to glass?" Or maybe she had to hit him in the face, and then cut him. She reached for the medical kit and grabbed a bandaid for the tiny little slice she'd managed in totally the wrong place.
"Did you say your chest was sore earlier? Like, maybe you got hit?" She had seen the tiny little needle puncture left in his arm by the anesthetic. Maybe there was some truth to the punch first, puncture after theory.

She owed him dinner. That was for sure.
"You first. Deeeefinitely you first." She pat him on the elbow and motioned to the towel he'd set up for her. Why was this so funny? She wasn't entirely sure, but it was. It totally, definitely was. Noel picked up the knife and twisted it until the overhead light glinted. "Let me just get that pain out of your-"
Someone jiggled the door and Noel dashed to catch it before it became too terribly open. She stuffed her face in the open inch to block the view and salvage Ranger's virtue, knife at the ready just out of view. But it was just a wrong room. The guy's arms were full of breakfast burritos and packages and iced coffees and he just hadn't been able to see properly with all that crap. No harm. No foul. Noel locked the door this time and whuffed out a sigh of relief. Not an Enron lie in sight.
"Now... where were we."
Noel spun the knife expertly and turned to see where the Ranger had gone to. Oh wait. Disinfectant.

He knew she could taste lies, so naturally he dropped a few whoppers to illustrate his point.
Rancid meat and bananas cooked in window cleaner, if she had to guess that exact flavor profile. Noel abandoned the search and stumbled over to grab the orange juice before the taste gathering in her mouth forced her to throw up.
"Gross." Gross was an understatement. She wished she could spit out the OJ too as it was a strong flavor, but not quite strong enough to completely win. With no other options it went down the hatch. She shuddered and screwed the lid back on with deliberate slowness. "Odds are low, but I guess I take your point."
And of course the Ranger dropped his pants.
She'd asked him to and, as they were checking skin, she'd expected to get nothing but butt. It was a blessing and a curse that he kept the manties on.
It could be in the legs. Odds were low, but… "We're covering all edge cases today. Apparently."
The OJ went back to hanging out with the minibar offerings, and Noel skipped to the bottom edge of his last bit of clothing. Noel checked one leg, front and back. And the other just the same. The feet were really too bony, but she checked those too, even going as far as to tug his foot up and check the softer pads and calluses.
Nothing.
Fate was cruel. He was either untagged and that felt like it might mean something, or there was a very little bit of skin that she still had to check. Skin they both may have been trying to pretend did not exist.
She didn't ask, she just went for it like ripping off a bandaid. Manties down.
And there it was, plain as day. Plain ass day? A chuckle got out before she had a chance to stop it and it grew out of control unit there was even a snort.
"They got you-" she poked the tiny inflamed spot and tried to get the giggling under control.

Noel snorted softly at the flex and made her way over. She'd been feeling hesitant to touch him knowing on paper what she'd read, but shenanigans put her back at ease and back in the moment. He hadn't read it… yet. For now, this was just Michael Blackforest Ninja Tomahawking Hunter, ballroom dancing badass. Noel was okay with that guy.
"Why ear plugs?" The blindfold she could understand, she would submit to that if she had to, but what did he think she did with her ears, exactly?
She started at his neck, combing carefully through his neck hair line and stopping for moles. Noel knew all the tricks. She didn't touch lightly, she wasn't in it to tickle him and she wanted to be thorough-- stretching skin and walking her fingers over the texture of his skin inch by inch. There wasn't a lot of places to hide on this broad back.
The lower she got, the dryer her mouth.
"Maybe you don't have one…?" She would honestly rather go under the knife now. Noel felt along his belt line, but it wasn't there, either.
"Off." She tugged at a belt loop. Yeah. It looked like they were doing this.

Having a computer that did not connect to the internet did not feel like it was a Noel idea. File tampering was of course a thing, it just happened to be a thing that she never really thought too hard about.
She opened her mouth to protest about not liking it, but missed her moment. Noel figured she would prefer her movements not be tracked more than she wanted bodily comfort. But the Ranger was on a mission and he hadn't said no. In fact, they were apparently making a tradition of it. She shut her mouth and waited while he went "shopping." She also put her shirt back on. No sense in leaving it off when the site was so easily accessed by just moving said shirt up.
Noel wedged herself into the blind corner of the bunk and read more journal entries while he was gone, this time starting at the beginning. It didn't go back as far as she needed to fill all the gaps in her memory, but it seemed to go back to about when the beginning of their Mission timeline started.
As much as she told herself she would keep reading to distract herself, she was too curious to see what the Ranger brought back. He went about setting things up, even going as far as getting some OJ to make the alcohol go down easier.
"I usually don't drink because it's a matter of control. Pain also erodes control. It's not impossible, but there's no point in making conditions perfect for an accident." Shoot. She should have thought of that earlier. He was already disinfecting his hands. Noel abandoned her laptop and inspected the pseudo-medical spread.
"If you want me to check you, we might want do that first." What? It wasn't like she was afraid. It was the practical choice and had nothing to do with nerves.

He checked thoroughly, running his hands across her skin and breathing in the wake of his own touch. It wasn't that he was trying to make her aware of him. It was just the nature of exposing so much skin and having it scrutinized so closely.
And the goosebumps were from the cold. It was chilly closer to the windows and there wasn't a whole lot space at all in the cabin. That was exactly why she got goosebumps. Definitely the windows.
> ”How d’ y’ manage? Keep y’rself...You?”
That was an incredibly philosophical question. How did anyone manage to stay themselves? If everyone was a sum of their experiences, what did that make Noel?
"Notes? Stubbornness? My computer is full of journal logs. You should probably read them at some point." As embarrassing as that would be, he was mentioned in a lot of them. It would probably help him. They really were partners, though there'd been a distinct lack of talk about SUPER or their supposed mission. Was it just that secret?
Noel braced herself against the bunk as he began to check lower. Why hadn't he found anything yet? She was sure it would have been near the spine. What would it mean if there was nothing?
> ”I think I found it.”
And Noel's mouth had gone dry in the meantime. The more senses that were engaged in a memory, the easier it was to remember. And Noel certainly remembered how she'd gotten that one. She'd hallucinated and suffered flu-like symptoms for more than a week after getting... stung. She couldn't remember if she managed to tag that mutant, but she certainly remembered what they looked like in her hallucinations. Black carapace and a too-wide smile.
"Can you get it out?" She was not looking forward to it, nor was she looking forward to returning the favor for the Ranger. "We really need to stop performing minor surgery on each other."

"We put them where we thought they'd be least able to do anything about it when by themselves. Between the shoulder blades in that spot you can't itch is a favorite." Which meant there was no way in hell she'd be able to check by herself. Noel got up to check the door of their teensy sleeping car and pulled the shade.
She trusted him, she had to remind herself. There would be reasons why beyond just being thrown together. And he'd come to trust her to the degree that he let her dip into actual classified materials in his head, if her notes were to be believed.
So she took off her shirt.
"Check the back of the arms and neck if it not near the spine." She pulled her hair out of the way and held her shirt in front of her. She was still wearing a bra. So it wasn't exactly as salacious as it felt.
He commented on her lack of memories. She hadn't had to start off that way, but she was legitimately freaking out about it.
"The cost of taking someone else's memories away is equal time so far as I can tell. Especially if I'm trying to weaponize it. All my younger years are a patchwork of other people otherwise I might not know how to read or write or speak." Or walk or use her hands... it didn't account for everything she'd lost, considering the fact that her powers were not usually permanent.

Noel watched Michael come to a conclusion. Just like that, they had a destination. Texas.
"Do you know someone there?" It could be good, could be bad. She couldn't decide. Michael popped open his laptop and was greeted by a password prompt. Hm. Noel wondered if hers was the same so she followed suit. A little red light flicked on, it told her to stay still, and then it said it recognized her face. So, she was still not terribly different looking in 10 years, she guessed.
Since her laptop was free reading, Noel passed over their files. "Maybe you can find your password in there? Your birthday is in March. You've got a dog... I dunno. What do people normally put for passwords?" Apparently she knew that there would be times when she did not know her password and so Noel was smart enough to use her face, something she'd always have at the ready.
"My computer doesn't even connect to the internet." Unless things had really changed a lot and she was doing it wrong. There was virtually nothing on this machine except some dated word files. She picked one at random and fired it up.
I don't get it. No. Actually, I hate it. I hate relying on someone else and I hate that Michael is so freaking reliable. He is a trap and he is trapping me and I walked right the fuck into it.
Oh? Noel gave him a bit of side eye. What the heck was this? Noel scrolled back to the date. April 2017
You can not fall in love with him. No. Full stop. Don't do it if you are in a place where you're reading this and it's not true right now. Just don't. Steal his pants, but don't spend time with him any more if you value your independence. It's too late for my feelings today. Emotions are big fat stupid selfish wastes of time. And... also kind of nice.
She went forward a bit.
I met myself today. My doppelganger from the other universe. I interrogated him, but some things he said hurt worse than what I found in his head. Who knows how to hurt me better than me? He said that he could tell I was walking around fooling people about knowing them. That I was a husk compared to a real person. Fucking ouch. How do you know what you stand for, Noel? I made him take in severe mental issues from someone else until there was none of him left. I rewrote him. Now there's no second me, just two men with mental issues.
She clicked around for other interesting events and paused to read a short entry.
He let you take his classified memories. He's safe now. He trusts me that much.
He trusted her that completely. Despite his fears and despite his very valid hesitations. She seemed to return that trust. Noel shut the laptop with a frown. It was her, but it was all totally new. Like someone had crawled around in her head long enough to get the feel of her. Then they wrote a story that would have been sweet if she wasn't the main protagonist of it.
"Michael, I have been searching my memories forwards and backwards and I can say with certainty that I have maybe 5 years of my own memory right now." Maybe it was out of the blue, but reading about future her had unnerved her more than she cared to admit. She wanted to move on and to do that, they had to get out of this situation scott free. "And part of that memory is working for a different department than we're dealing with now. My job was to help track people, mutants especially. I need you to... check me. I need to know that the subdermal tracking chips that I've used on other people aren't now being used on you and me."
