The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>“Having you as a coach would be excellent. Just... what's an Adapted?”
Gemma blinked, honestly surprised. She thought that by now pretty much all the kids in the school knew what she was. Word gets around, especially if it's about the guidance counselor cancelling mutant powers. It was the kind of thing kids liked to talk about. They had to know what they were up against, after all...
"It means I was born with a gene similar to the mutant gene." she explained "I have an aura that cancels mutant powers. If you stand close enough to me, you will notice you can't use your abilities, as long as you stay within range."
That was an explanation she had practiced so many times she didn't even have to pay attention anymore. But she did anyway.
"People like me are sometimes called 'adapted' because some people believe our genes adapted to the growing number of mutants. Like, a self-defense system."
Katrina had definitely not been spending enough time hanging out with her peers at the mansion lately, or doing much of anything at the mansion lately other than eating or sleeping, really. She normally would have heard all the rumors that were circulating about the new guidance counselor otherwise. Now that the news was old hat, no one was really talking about it, she supposed.
An Adapted could cancel a mutant's powers? Fascinating. Fascinating and curious.
“How does it work? How did you find? What happens if someone has ears or a tail or something and you cancel it? Are there lots of other Adapteds?”
Her curiosity had gotten the best of her and, for the moment, she completely forgot about colleges, ultimate frisbees, and mysterious facebook stalking dukelings.
“It's not permanent is it?” It couldn't be, or she wouldn't be allowed to work here. “How far away do you have to be? Does it always work or can you turn it off? What would happen if you were injured and dying and a healing mutant like Doc Prof tried to save you?”

"All right all right all right" Gemma held up her hands, laughing "That's a lot of questions. How about I answer them one at a time?..."
She chuckled as she rested her elbows on her desk.
"I didn't think there was anyone in the school who didn't know this yet, but... I guess not many students know the actual details." she thought about it for a moment "All right, let's put it this way. I have an aura that nullifies mutant powers, as long as the person is inside it. It's about six feet in radius. The effect is not permanent, and I can't turn it off, it's always there. It doesn't make physical mutations go away, but it does nullifly things created by mutant powers. And no, if I get injured, DocProf can't heal me. That's the bad part."
She had been injured before, and it took her quite some time to heal. That was one thing she regretted about being an adapted...
"I don't know how many adapteds are out there, I have only met a precious few myself. It looks like it's a relatively new and rare genetic phenomenon, just like mutations were a few decades ago..."
The 'new' guidance counselor did a good job of keeping up with Katrina's barrage of questions. She didn't answer them in reverse order, but that took a very special kind of person. Katrina approved of this. It was a good quality in a counselor and a potential coach.
“That's really useful.” This lady could never be fooled by illusions, shot by laser eyes, sliced by aura blades, or psychic-ed into doing something she didn't want to do. The draw back, only normal healing. Not bad.
“Do you think there will be a lot more in the future? Kind of like there are a lot of mutants now? Maybe they'll even have Adapted schools.”
“Oh, and you could prove that mutants aren't cheating for the frisbee team! I get it now.” That was what she had meant by that comment. Katrina was getting excited by the idea of the team. Even though she wasn't especially athletic, frisbee seemed like something fairly easy to pick up.

Gemma smiled and nodded. Adapted schools? That sounded like a funny idea. There was really no use though, unlike mutants adapteds couldn't go haywire and damage property, but... yes. They were definitely different. And different always scared people, even if it was harmless.
"All right, Katrina, why don't we do this: organizing the team will be your responsibility, and I will be there to coach you. As for your applications, you did a great job with the list. I will look into your academic records and talk to you about your options. In the meantime, I would like you to find at least two other schools you would like to apply to, as a backup plan, and make similar lists for those too. Sounds good?"
Katrina nodded enthusiastically as she gathered up all of her things. The stacks of fliers was not exactly easy to manage and she was now unsure how she had ever managed to get them here in the first place. She got most of them, tucked her card board box under her arm and then retreated out the door.
“Thanks for all your help Ms. Gemma! See you on the practice field!”
She had gotten all the fliers, and her brown paper box with the hearts on it, but she had forgotten one piece of paper with lines on it that started out, "Cher Katrina". Oops.
