The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>"Well if he's human he's going into foster care anyway."
Gemma sighed as she looked at the baby. Damn mother instincts. She never liked seing children, especially babies go into the system, not while she was around. She also knew how much time raising a baby takes, and all that; if little Andrew was indeed human, he probably would be better off with normal foster parents than in a mutant school.
"Well, if he's not, I'm sure we can figure something out."
>>"Uh-It can be dangerous? Y-you're kidding, right?"
"No it can't. Not unless he's a mutant, that is" she grinned, taking back the baby before Noel dropped it. The woman didn't seem so sure about the whole baby business. She looked positively scared.
>>"They used to use cloth diapers didn't they?"
"Well..." ... that was a long time ago. Noel bolted. Gemma sighed, and held the baby; she bribed Angela with the promise of more nuggets to get her to sit quietly for a little bit more. The agent woman returned with napkins from across the street; Gemma stared at her, shaking her head in disbelief.
"You know, with that effort, you could've just bought real diapers on the corner." she sighed "It's a baby, Agent Gage, not a bomb."
Picking Andrew up, she took the napkins from Noel, and stood. "Go buy the girl some nuggets. I'll be right back."
Once the diaper situation was taken care of, Gemma returned to their table to find Angela munching on more nuggets, and Noel relieved to have gotten out of the dirty part of the job. Sitting back, Gemma picked up the juice bottle once again to feed the baby.
"He's in desperate need of a bath, among other things." she said "It would probably be good if a doctor saw him too." she looked up "Where are you going to take them?"
Diapers from the corner store? But... she'd been so good. And so smart... She even brought a spare...
Gemma seemed to notice the oncoming protrusion of lower lip and averted the onset of pouting by taking the baby and the cloth. The adult in charge disappeared to go diapering. That left Noel with Angela. They looked at each other and then away from each other.
"I'll get you more nuggets."
"And ketchup."
"And ketchup, but only so long as you don't take your booty off that seat."
When Gemma returned, she no longer smelt of roses. Angela was part playing, part eating her fresh batch of nuggets and Noel had a "nugget tax" in her mouth.
> "He's in desperate need of a bath, among other things. It would probably be good if a doctor saw him too. Where are you going to take them?"
"I would like to take you all in for processing."
"What's processing?" Noel, in a fit of perhaps her only motherly instinct ever, leaned over to wipe the smudges of ketchup off of Angela's round cheeks.
"Processing is where I take you to the good guys and they write down your name and we'll talk about what happened and then maybe we'll find you a new home to live in."
"Sounds lame."
Well. She took it better than Noel had hoped. "They'll likely offer you a job as well, Gemma. Given your special talents. I know you already have one, but... they're very hard people to turn down." Because it was take a job and have a subdermal track inserted or just have a subdermal tracker inserted. Noel hated when people made a scene about this kind of thing... "Just... promise me you'll think on it? Instead of turning them down right away?"
When Angela was done, the pair of them juggled Andrew and somehow got Angela cleaned off and out the door. Noel led them, baby in arm, by foot toward a rather plain brick building. Once inside they tried to shuffle Gemma and the kids off in separate directions.

>>"Processing is where I take you to the good guys and they write down your name and we'll talk about what happened and then maybe we'll find you a new home to live in."
>>"Sounds lame."
Gemma had to agree. It sounded awfully official, and not too comforting. Things get processed all the time, but she didn't like the idea of small kids and babies being among those things. It just didn't sound right.
>>"They'll likely offer you a job as well, Gemma. Given your special talents. I know you already have one, but... they're very hard people to turn down. Just... promise me you'll think on it? Instead of turning them down right away?"
"We'll see" Gemma smiled, holding Angela's hand as they walked out of the restaurant. She didn't like promising things like that "It depends on what kind of a job they offer me. Also, they way they offer it." Any offer can be turned down. Or, at least, almost any. If one is determined enough.
When they arrived in the building, people tried to take Andrew and Angela away somewhere else.
"No way in hell" Gemma said, glaring at that "That little girl needs to stay with me, for your own safety, or she'll be out of here in no time, Noel can tell you that much. And I wouldn't mind keeping and eye on the baby too, please. Unless you have someone here better qualified to take care of him."
That someone was definitely not Noel. And Gemma was definitely not taking no for an answer.
Gemma resisted the separation. Noel couldn't really see how she might have formed bonds so quickly. They were children, yes. In need to looking after, yes. But Gemma was in no way responsible for them.
"Gemma, we have many people here like you. We're putting Angela with some for now. Even if you were to take her home with you, you couldn't possibly keep her covered at all times for her whole life. She's got to learn how to control herself before she can be allowed to command others.
I'm not saying we're better qualified, I'm just saying that we have more. More people like you, but maybe not with as much heart." Was she delaying Gemma so that Angela and Andrew could be taken away and off her plate? Maybe. But this was for Gemma too. "If you want to make a difference in her life, if you want to help kids like her, we see this kind of stuff every day."
If Gemma wanted to get emotional Noel was going to appeal to that emotion.

Gemma's eyes narrowed as she looked at Noel. Had she just said 'it will only be a minute' or something like that, she would have agreed without making a fuss; but she was just expaining things a bit too much.
"Just because someone is an adapted that doesn't qualify them to take care of children." she said "And I see 'this kind of stuff' every day too. I have, for many years."
Hands on her hips, she looked at the people around them who were busy ushering the girl in one direction, and taking the baby another.
"If you want me to consider the offer you were talking about, I want to see what exactly you do in this place."
Noel liked Gemma. That didn't mean that she didn't just want to just jam her with the subdermal tracker and be done with her though. It took her a good two second count to convince herself that it was better to play along. She huffed and turned on her heel down toward the hallway where Angela had been taken.
"Come on."
Down a corridor with many doors, Noel had to open one or two before she interrupted the right setting.
Chicken nugget Angela shrieked as an agent cooed to the girl while taking a sample of blood. The nurse was being too kind, really, holding her hand like that and giving her a Toy Story 3 band aid. The little tyke had nearly starved her brother and been a royal pain in the you-know-what every time that Noel had laid eyes on her.
The agent sitting with her now was efficient, kind and far better equipped to do all the nuances. She didn't even seem to mind the screaming.
"Hey, Heather, how long have you been on duty." Noel had to repeat herself at least twice before Heather actually heard her. Angela was now wailing because she had been promised a sucker if she had sat still. Since she had tried to demand her way out from the moment she came in, no sucker was given.
"Too long. I mean, I'm a nurse so I'm used to 18-hour shifts, but it'd be nice for a bit of relief ya know?" Cotton balls bounced off of Heather's frazzled hair without her noticing. Angela was now throwing anything that she could get her hands on.
Noel raised her hand as if to say 'well, there you go.' If she couldn't hear the questions they were asking on purpose then there was no way she overheard that Noel was trying to recruit Gemma. She'd asked for help all on her own.
"We also need more in the field. My partner retired from hazard work and they've yet to recruit another to replace him. What if you hadn't come along? Where would I be now? Where would Andrew be? We don't know what kind of situation we're walking into when we go out in the field. We just know that it's a dangerous mutant-inspired one."
Heather used a distinctly mom voice on Angela and the tossing stopped. "Come on, hun. We've got some coloring books." Done with the messy part, and since Angela already had a tracking chip, she was free to be a brat in a more comfortable setting.
"We don't have a whole lot to keep a kid occupied, but they're probably already looking for a place for her."
Noel led them back to the front desk and asked for the whereabouts of the baby. They gave her a room number and Noel led Gemma there next praying all the way that they were going to walk in on happy domestic scene that would sway Gemma's heart toward helping.
Well it wasn't domestic bliss.
"—can't believe you let it get this bad! Next time call for back up immediately, ESPECIALLY if there's a baby involved. I can't believe how irresponsible you are! What if—" Noel sort of zoned in and out through the yelling. This was to be expected from those who never stepped out into the field.
The baby was already bathed and they'd managed to whip out a bottle for him. He was swaddled in a blanket, but it was clear from the little circular bandaid on his foot that they'd already drawn his blood. He seemed to actually enjoy the yelling. Figured. Being the baby brother of a loud and rambunctious older sister.
"How long does the blood work usually take?" She'd interrupted since she wasn't at all in touch with the woman's berating conversation and it took the other woman a moment to switch trains of thought.

We don't know what kind of situation we're walking into when we go out in the field. We just know that it's a dangerous mutant-inspired one."
Gemma nodded. "I can understand that. But I already have a large group of mutant children I am responsible for, and being an only counselor in that school is aready more work than I can handle with normal amount of sleep." she sighed "I don't usually turn down anyone who needs help. I'm just saying, my job is more than full time already."
Besides, working for a government agency collecting mutant children?..
>>"We don't have a whole lot to keep a kid occupied, but they're probably already looking for a place for her."
"She's a special case" Gemma nodded "Until she learns to limit the use of her powers, she'll require constant supervision. From someone like me."
>>"How long does the blood work usually take?" >>"If the lab's not backed up, a couple hours."
Gemma walked over to the baby to look at him; he looked content now, and kept looking around with immense curiosity. Gemma smiled at him, and rubbed his belly. Then, she turned back to Noel.
"What happens now is up to you." She shrugged. Noel didn't like this part, but it was part of the job sometimes. "If you don't mind they'll probably want a physical from you even if you don't stay. Like I said, your kind is in demand. If they can decode some magical formula from how tall you are, more power to 'em."
'Course it wasn't only height and weight they would be after. They would want blood. And they'd take the chance to insert a subdermal tracking node. They wouldn't just let her walk away even if that is what they wanted her to believe.
It was the half-truth that bothered Noel. She wasn't allowed to say and she couldn't ease her own conscience by telling and then wiping her. Gemma was an Adapted who had walked willingly into the spider's den albeit the flies that lured her there were not intended as bait.

Gemma's eyes narrowed. She did not like the whole thing. Somehow she just... knew it wasn't quite right. She also knew she should ask Sam, or whoever was running Xavier's, before she let some random government agency examine her. She was way more careful than that.
"Is there actually a way to copy these abilities?" she asked, honestly curious "I only met a few people like me, and I have never heard anyone who could... copy mutations. Why would adapteds be any different?..."
She sighed.
"Listen, I can't agree to anything until I know some details. As I said, even if I accept what you are... offering, I won't have time to do it full-time. Or half-time, even."
"Copy?" Wow. She had never thought of that. "No, it doesn't actually work that way. They don't know how you guys work only that it's entirely different from how mutants work. Biology is not my forté, I just know that you're so few and far between that even just a physical would give them more data and might help someone know what makes you special." She shrugged. The techs loooooved data. She needed to at least try to squeeze something out of Gemma.
"I don't think they're expecting you to sign up for anything on the spot especially since you already have a job. I'm not even the one who would officially offer you a position. I'm just telling you to watch out. They can make offers that are incredibly hard to refuse."
Noel should know. She'd been recruited quite young. This was her first and only job.
"Are you sure they can't just get a physical? They'll tell you your cholesterol." Noel was leading them back toward the front... or was she? The building had many corridors. Who knew what was behind some of those doors?

"We'll see" Gemma smirked. That sounded reasonable. Before taking any job, she would like to know more about what she was expected to do. A lot more. And she would have a few other questions too.
>>"Are you sure they can't just get a physical? They'll tell you your cholesterol."
Gemma sighed. "All right. I want to wait for a while anyway, to know what's up with the kids. So, why not?" she agreed, following Noel down the corridor. If physical was all they wanted, why the heck not. It was not like she didn't really want to know how her abilities worked exactly...
Hallelujia they could tag her without her knowing. Noel tried not to look too relieved. Now she could pass the woman off to a tech and she wasn't responsible for what was happening, she wouldn't have to answer tricky questions or sit through the inevitable lies about why they wanted all that information. Yeah, they wanted to know how Adapteds worked but it was more than that. They wanted to be able to somehow predict where the next might develop...
"Right this way." Like a professional waiter, Noel served Gemma up to the Nurse's station. Yep. Just a routine physical on an Adapted. Noel prayed that their eyes wouldn't get too gleeful when they simultaneously took blood and inserted the subdermal tracker. It was always best that they never suspected anything.
"I'll just wait out here for you, if you like." There might be a magazine and a chair around somewhere.
