The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Like he believed that for a moment. Andrew had no idea why she was suddenly possessive of his coffee but he'd paid for it so he was going to drink it. His tug spilled a little of the coffee on his hand but Andrew paid no attention to the hot liquid. It was when his thumb, where the spill had landed, felt like it had fallen asleep and gotten the shivers at the same time that he got confused. Since it had passed within seconds he ignored it and yanked hard on the coffee container. It came free from her grasp and he smirked before taking a long drink.
And then the sensation that had plagued his thumb for those few seconds overtook his entire body. Why couldn't he move?! Now he truly was panicking. His mind raced as it tried to come up with an explanation and found only Azalea. She'd taken a drink and hadn't been affected so why him? It took him far long than it should have to make the connection. Maybe Azalea was a mutant?
That would explain it. Mutants had all sorts of different powers. Finding himself overpowered again did nothing for his confidence though. And this one was a girl no less! It was embarrassing to have such a useless power. While he waited for the effect to wear off Andrew worked on calming himself down so that he wouldn't scream and leap away from Azalea when he was able to move again.
Andrew wasnt the only one panicking. Azalea was freaking out. Crap she was finally on her way to making a new friend and there he sat completely frozen. Not wanting to make a scene she leaned over and whispered into his ear. "Stay calm. The effets should wear off quicklky you only got a little bit of it just stay calm." Her voice was far more steady then she felt.
He must hate her now. Thats all therir was to it. As he sat their she could see him peicing it together in his mind. The more she could see he was figuring out, the more she looked ashamed and truly depressed. She didnt mean to let this happen again.
As soon as the effects wore off she looked down and sighed. "If you dont want to be my math teacher i understand.....Listen i guess i just better get going....uhm...thanks for returning my paper."

Azalea was thankfully right. It didn't take long for the effects to wear off. He finally lowered his coffee to the table just as she apologized and insisted on leaving. He could easily let her go and never have to deal with her again. It was the safe thing to do. Yet she reminded him of, well, himself. Just like Andrew she'd been hiding her mutation for who knows how long. Hers had to be harder to hide than his. His hand snaked forward and clasped her wrist to prevent her from leaving.
"Don't. You aren't the only one who has been hiding something."
Andrew looked around to make sure the rest of the coffee shop had gone back to their own activities and conversations. He really didn't want anyone to overhear and things to get bad. He pulled up his left sleeve to show her the black marks on his wrist.
"Let's just say I didn't need a tattoo artist for these."
Saying it outright here would be foolish. They could worry about telling each other specifics once they were out of Starbucks. Andrew really did need to stop going to coffee shops altogether.
Azalea turned around when his wrist grasped hers. Oh no. now she was really in trouble. Again freaking out she gave him a 'stay away from me' look. But that look quickly disapeared as he lifted his sleeves to show the black mark on his arm. That was odd. They both had black marks, her permanently glossy black lips and his tatttoos. Well great he could be hidding that he is a drug dealer or a drunk. That kind of thing wasnt out of character for new york. But he said he didnt need an artist. This was just getting weird.
Looking at him intently she leaned forward, grabbed her starbucks, took a deep sip and sighed in satisfaction. The luiquid calmed her down. Taking a breath she looked at him. Maybe for once she could trust a complete stranger. "Maybe we should talk about this else where."

Oh he knew that look. He'd used it often enough himself. Well a form of it at least. He waited patiently to see if she'd trust him. He couldn't show her any proof of his ability here. Unlike hers his had no outward effects other than the black marks. Unless he made a promise to her. That might work. He'd have to make sure she could see his wrist so she'd know. The words he wanted to say stuck in his throat for a minute or two after she suggested they talk somewhere else. He simply wasn't accustomed to using them anymore. Andrew made sure his wrist was in view and blew out a breath before speaking.
"I promise I won't hurt you unless you try to hurt me until after we've talked."
Yet another line appeared across his arm and he felt the change in his thinking occur nearly instantly. Where moments before he would have attacked Azalea if he'd had to now it just wasn't an option. It was akin to slitting his own throat in his mind. With that settled Andrew stood and tossed his latte in a trash can on the way out. No way he was going to repeat that experience so soon.
Once Andrew was outside of the cafe he waited on Azalea and tried to decide where the most convenient place to talk would be. They certainly wouldn't find someplace on campus. She'd said she had an apartment in Soho. Either of their apartments would do but he would prefer hers, that was if she didn't have roommates. He did and he didn't want them to be there to possibly overhear them.
Azalea watched as though seh were watching a little bit of magic. Slowly she started to pecie it together. his promises were ultimate, they were defined as a part of him when they were made. At least for the moment thats all she could gather. But what if the promise was broken? Well for the time being at least she was safe from being attacked. Taking her coffee with her like a child holding a teddy bear for comfort she musingly sucked on the straw of her drink.
Trying to make the air light she smiled. "Want a taste?" She asked as she followed him out of the shop, her black lips not even leaving a lipstick mark on the straw. Then something occured to her, what did it feel like when the people she turned into living statues froze? Did it hurt? Azalea mentally hoped it didnt hurt.

Now that she knew there was something odd about him the nervousness returned full force but in exchange his cool demeanor melted away. When she asked if he wanted a taste of her drink his eyebrow shot up in amused query.
"I think I'll pass."
Andrew was about to ask her about her roommate status so he could figure out where they were going when she asked him something else. The pregnant pause after his name and before the question spoke volumes about what she hoped the answer would be.
"Not really."
He wouldn't say that he had doubts whether it would be the same for people who got a much larger dose than his or not. Azalea probably didn't need to hear that at this particular moment.
"Say, do you have roommates? I don't think we'll find someplace suitable on campus so yeah. I share with two other guys."
Azalea was told that she should never go away with strangers. And even now he could be a killer that wanted to get her back for paralyzing. Still she answered the question honestly. "I have three roommates....I live in a loft in soho." Maybe that was too much information.
Looking at him she suddenly started to feel extremely awkward. He knew and he was keeping her around. She had to run he woudl never understand she was a mutant. With no special powers that would ever make her useful to any one good for evil. Starting to panic her eyes flicked around for escape routs.

Andrew was about to divulge that his apartment would probably be a better option then. It was fairly close by and he only had two roommates. Except that, when he looked over at Azalea to explain this he saw in her eyes a sentiment he knew very well. It was fear that stared back at him. Fear that he would hurt her, fear that he would never understand, fear that even though she had a talent it was utterly useless, and the very same fears he lived with every day.
It was only then that his own nervousness and fears went away. How could he fear someone who knew the same fears as he did?
"Azalea. Listen to me. I promised I wouldn't hurt you. If I broke that promise I'd be the one who paid, not you. I wouldn't even be able to bruise you."
Andrew paused for a moment. He didn't think that would be enough. If it were him it certainly wouldn't be. She needed to realize that she had all the power in this situation.
"You're the one in control here really. If I try to hurt you then you can paralyze me and run. At that point I'd already be in pain so between the two things you'd be plenty able to run like mad."
Maybe that would do it. Andrew didn't really understand why she'd be fearful. Her power was useful. She could defend herself with it at least. All Andrew's did was make sure that he kept his word. Most people didn't need freakish tattoos and 'magically' appearing wounds to do that.
Azalea took a breath and looked at him quite seriously. For a moment she put her walls down and looked at him with soft sincerity. But that was only for am moment. In the next second her walls were back up and she looked at him as though she were making a business deal. "Lets go."
Walking ahead of him she had a slight strut in her walk as though she were trying to prepare herself for a big meeting that was being held to tell some company that had lost millions of dollars in their investment. She couldnt belive she was trusting some guy with magical tattoos. This was nuts.

It was enough. Real trust between the two of them would come with time and effort. Right now she was at least persuaded to talk.
"My place would likely work better. It's walking distance and I've only got two roommates to worry about."
Andrew had really lucked out with that apartment opening where it was. Being so close to campus was a great time saver as far as getting to class on time. He would have prefered an apartment on his own but really, what college student could afford that?
In either case he increased his own stride to match Azalea's. Once he was even with her he took over navigational duties, so to speak. They reached his apartment fairly quickly and Andrew let the two of them in to the three bedroom apartment.
For an apartment with three college age guys in it you'd expect something fairly messy. Andrew didn't allow that to happen. It wasn't spotless. Things were tossed about here and there at intervals. However it wasn't dirty and the clutter could certainly have been worse. The walls were a boring white with various posters and paintings hung to alleviate the dullness of the color.
More important than that though was the six foot blonde male that occupied the sofa. The tv was on and until the door lock clicked he'd obviously been watching it. His name was Craig and among other things he was the one who'd washed Andrew's gloves and wristbands. Andrew fixed him with a glare that told him in no uncertain terms to get out. Craig rolled his eyes.
"Yeah yeah Mr. Lone Wolf. I get it. I'm gone. We need pop anyway."
With that Craig grabbed his wallet and left, but not without eyeing Azalea and giving Andrew a puzzled look. After that all too brief encounter Andrew appropriate the spot on the couch that his roommate had just vaccated and motioned Azalea to a chair near it.
Azalea took an uncomfortable seat in the chair that he had motioned toward after his roomate left. The roomaate seemed to be a little bit of the jock type with a confidence level that was far too high for his own good. When he walked out she gave him a passing glance but nothing more. He seemed to stare at her and andrew oddly as though Andrew wanst one to bring girls home.
"Listen. I want an explination now.Please.....just tell me quickly and if you dare try to keep me here....." Again she was a little suspicious but still she seemed calm as she sat in the chair waiting for him to explain.

Andrew leaned forward so that his arms were resting across his knees. Saying what his powers did was one thing. She could very well not believe him. And yet he couldn't think of a promise to make and break that could easily show her either. Therefore he'd have to settle for telling her and hope she believed him.
"Any promise I make I have to keep. If I don't then things get bad for me. Depending on the promise I could get off with a headache or if I went and promised to kill someone and didn't come through I'd probably end up dead. The punishment is equal to the severity of the promise broken."
A thought occurred to Andrew and he tugged his long sleeve shirt off and raised his right arm where an old scar lay in plain sight.
"That one's from an old promise I made just to see how far this thing would go."
Then he half turned so that the right side of his back was visible. On right shoulder blade was a partially healed wound that would leave a generous scar once it finally closed up. After a minute he tugged his shirt back on and looked at Azalea.
"That one's from...a mistake I made recently. So you aren't the only one with a power that royally sucks. In fact I'd trade you in a heartbeat."
Azalea smiled. "No you wouldnt. I cant ever get too close to anyone. I cant kiss....I cant touch anyone if i sweat too much. I cant let anyone in ever. You can still touch, and feel lisp on yours. My power is nothing but a dangerous nusance. Its worthless Andrew." She looked at him completely serious.
Moving closer she looked him in the eyes. "I know you wont hurt me....if i could release you from that promise i would right now. Can i do that can i take that promise away from you? You arent obligated any more Andrew. I cant belive i'm saying this to another mutant. But....I trust you." She had never trusted her own kind before. Ever. In fact she had hardly ever met anyone of her own kind. Maybe once or twice upon glance. Or passing by in the streets without knowing.

So they both had issues with their powers huh?
"At least yours is useful. Mine puts me at the mercy of anyone who figures it out and takes the notion to use me. It's eternal servitude in a way. I've only managed this long because I hid it from everyone."
Moments later she did something he'd never expected from anyone. She released him from his promise. He pulled up his left sleeve and watched the black mark associated with his promise not to hurt her disappear. The compulsion that went with it faded from his mind and he began to feel himself again. With that a sense of shock settled over him and he gaped at Azalea.
"But why?"
That was all he could get out. This was the first time he'd revealed his ability in a situation that hadn't called for it and she hadn't decided to use him like a slave and discard him when he no longer proved useful. It just stunned him.
