The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Madlaina sat in a secluded area of the woods near the back of the Mansion property. The wall that ran around the land was visible from her spot, and she had a fairly clear view of the area around her. Not that it mattered. What she was planning to try and do was not only private but would make it impossible for her to see anything.
Dumping her bag out onto the grass next to her, Maddy stared at the objects for a moment. Despite the fact that they couldn’t physically hurt her, they seemed to stare at her as if in challenge. All the objects were items that had previously tried to force their memories, but not overly traumatic ones, on her but she had pulled away too quickly for her powers to activate. Now she had gathered them together so she could work on her powers.
Stripping off her gloves, Maddy mentally prepped herself with the advice one of the mansion teachers had given her. Come up with an image of something she could control, like her breath or her eyes, and use it as a metaphor for her powers. Then clear her mind and use that visualization. Turn off the power as if it were the image; instead of having her eyes open, imagine them closing and the power closing too. Or holding her breath and hold her powers at the same time. But she couldn’t very well walk around with her eyes closed or holding her breath all the time, things that seemed to require thought, and then whenever she had to open them or breathe, the power would turn back on. Or at least that was what Madlaina worried.
So she chose a different idea. Potty training. When a baby is born, it goes to the bathroom whenever it needs to. Then it learns to control it unconsciously. That was what she had to do. She had to learn to control her powers and use them when she decided. Right now she was a baby with her powers, and she needed to learn how to control them unless she decided to use them.
Stripping off her gloves she reached for the book that lay on the grass.
Something was tickling her…her… her ribs? No that wasn’t right they weren’t her ribs they were pages. Someone was flicking through her pages. The sense of boredom was heavy in the air and there was the scent of books and shelves.
Easing into the memory a little more, relaxing her hold on her powers, letting go of her control, new sensations began filtering in. Even if they were coming in a little faster than she was ready for.
The lights hit her, too bright with the suddenness of it, but slowly faded into a warm afternoon glow. Trying to look around, Maddy found she couldn’t turn her head… at least not in a human way. It was more of a reorientation of her whole body, as if her consciousness were spinning inside the skin of the book. It was an odd and uncomfortable feeling. She was in the Mansion library, a student that she didn’t recognize was - reading her – the intense stare was a bit disconcerting, but it wasn’t really directed at her. Then without warning a loud shout echoed through the quiet room, startling both her and her reader. Then she was slammed shut and jolted out of the memory.
She had never been jerked so suddenly and unexpectedly out of a memory and it was almost painful the way it put everything back where it belonged. Usually she was fighting to get back anyway, so if a memory pushed her out she didn’t mind. Madlaina was very glad it hadn’t been a traumatic memory, she hated those and somehow they were usually the most forceful. Like her next planned foray into memories not her own.
The Remote… This one she knew was high emotion. Like most things in the institute, it absorbed a lot of the teenage drama. And a lot of people touched the remote. Maddy would not enjoy this.
With a hesitant hand, pulling back a fraction just before her skin hit the object but forcing her to go ahead, her fingers slipped over the hard plastic and settled for a moment. After a few seconds of nothing happening, Maddy lifted her hand. Though her powers weren’t always on, something she had known, she had never had anything like this happen. But she had never used them intentionally in this manner.
Was her power tapped at the moment, like a battery that needed a chance to recharge? Maybe there was a way around her powers. Madlaina tried to stop the small bubble of hope that was gurgling at the back of her chest, and with a bit more confidence placed her hand more fully on the remote. But the bubble burst when the second touch brought with it the mental tugging sensation that always accompanied a memory. Maddy didn’t even have a chance to prepare herself and was plunged into the midst of a lovers spat, like a cold gust on her face as the emotions hit her.
This memory seemed to be completely auditory; Maddy couldn’t see anything but could hear plenty.
“…such a liar! I saw you at the movies with her AND you put your arm around her, so don’t even try to give me any stupid excuse about her being your cousin!” The female voice was irate, and had an under tone of hysterics. And though Maddy couldn’t understand all the words, as the memory was in English, she understood the basics. Cheating boyfriend.
“But Lacy, you said we should slow down a little. You said ‘We’re going too fast’ remember?” The male voice was confused, and trying to get the girl, Lacy, to stop yelling at him.
“Oh, yeah, I said slow down, not come to a stop and start dating other people! And of all people! Her?! You know I hate her! How could you do that, even if we had broken up? Just go running off to the first big breasted cheerleader who sluts it up for you?”
