Verdigris stiffened, was he laughing at her? Scoffing at her mutation’s limited ability? Her defensive stance faded as he smiled, and retorts about self defence and the benefits of shotgun hands died as he complimented her with what looked to be a truthful grin. He was not laughing at her, he was laughing at life.
“You’re welcome, braining people, especially police officers, never did go down well.”
He held out his hand, and after a second’s hesitation she took it and shook firmly, politely.
“That’s alright, of course, don’t be late on your first day.”
He looked almost startled with himself as his invitation to lunch hung in the morning air, his quick defending of his intentions cemented the fact that, although a little bumbling, he really did mean well. She smiled back as he headed off towards his new job. It never hurt to have contacts, especially ones in positions that would be of great benefit if something went wrong. She flipped the card over a few times in rapid succession, before calling after the man’s swiftly retreating back.
“Just be careful whose hands you shake, some things are activated by touch.”
There would be something simply satisfying as an electricity controlling mutant to zap each outstretched hand, but she feared in a job like his, the hands extended to him wouldn’t always have such jesting, if not friendly, intentions. In a city like NYC, it was usually best to be careful.
Rolling her head to crack her neck she stowed the card in her pocket and continued her morning walk. Her good day just as good, if not better.
