The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Six blocks away from the Sanctuary, there was a place that Kaitlyn heard about called Prospect Park. There, one could find playgrounds, staging grounds for musical acts, fields for sporting events, and much more that a certain little girl would be interested in discovering. Today, this girl left the golden doors of the Sanctuary by herself to do just that.
As she crossed each crosswalk, Kaitlyn checked her phone. The glittery pink contraption, which tended to make little girls quite grateful to Sanctuary secretaries, had been outfitted with a GPS system. She wanted to know exactly where the Sanctuary was in relation to herself at all times.
Now she was reaching the perimeter of the park. Sitting down at a bus stop, she set her sparkly phone next to her on the bench and retrieved a folded, annotated map of Prospect Park from her pocket. The kid needed to use her entire arm-span to hold out the entire map in its unfolded form, so she held it down on the ground to pore over it in its entirety.
Where should I go first...?

Raven wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to what Blackwing was doing. He went with her pretty much everywhere, it being rather uncomfortable for both of them to be out of contact with one another, but quite often they both did their own things. Her mind being part raven or not, Raven was still mostly human with human concerns that simply didn't interest the giant black bird. For example, today she was looking for the ideal street corner to peddle her services as a fortune teller. Years ago when she had first started telling fortunes she had actually worked for an official organization with the expectation of going to work from 9-5 5 days a week. Unfortunately, that hadn't lasted very long as she discovered that she simply didn't have the patience for a job like that. So, learning from that mistake, she found it much better to simply claim a street corner and work by donation, enticing passers by to get their fortunes told by the magnificent Raven. Some days she came home with a small fortune. Other days she came home with nothing.
Blackwing, on the other hand, had found something rather interesting to catch his attention. It was both colourful and sparkly, bright pink to be exact. It was also small enough that he could easily carry it away in his claws. The only problem was the little girl currently holding it, but he knew how to be patient. A proper scavenger had to learn patience, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. Raven felt her bird's desire but ignored it, leaving Blackwing to his own devices.
After what seemed an eternity to the great bird, the girl finally put the phone down onto the bench beside it and, even better, turned her head to look at a map. In that instant Blackwing was up and away, rising from his perch and diving for the phone. With perfect aim, he grabbed it with his claws and with a monumental flap of his great wings, returned to the sky, landing back on his perch (a nearby roof in this case) a moment later. He let out a very contented caw, broadcasting the feeling back to Raven.

Fwoosh!
Kaitlyn looked around frantically for the source of the noise. It didn't take long to spot a massive black bird, flying away with somebody's pink cellphone.
Haha, sucks to be the guy who had that phone.
She turned back to her map. Now, where was I? Oh, right here. I'll check out that "Bandshell" thing, then I'll--that was MY cellphone!
The kid jumped to her feet and looked around for the bird. She couldn't lose that cellphone. Just as she was beginning to panic, Kaitlyn heard a loud Caw! coming from a nearby rooftop. There it is! Thinking quickly, she found a rock lying on the ground, which she tried to throw at the bird.
Her heart sped up during the split second when she noticed that this rock was not going to hit that big, black, thieving bird. Instead, it was hurtling towards a window.

Raven thought she might have found a rather nice little corner to peddle her craft. There appeared to be lots of foot traffic in the area and she didn't see any homeless performers that had all ready claimed the corner, which was perfect. She got back on her bike and prepared to call Blackwing back to her when she heard a loud crash, very much like the sound a window might make if something hard smashed into it.
It was at that moment that Raven became aware of the object that Blackwing had found himself, the image of a rather sparkly pink cell phone beamed into her mind. Normally she didn't have a problem with whatever Blackwing decided to take; she was almost as bad as the great raven when it came to procuring things she desired, regardless of whether or not they actually belonged to her. It was the smashed window, however, that drew her attention. Angry people were not fun people and Raven didn't want anyone angry at either herself or her familiar.
Peddling her bike closer to Blackwing, Raven was confronted with the image of a rather angry little girl who, it appeared, had been the one to throw the rock at her familiar. Blackwing glared down at her, protecting his ill gotten prize from the girl. "Are you trying to throw rocks at my bird?" Raven asked, trying her best to sound accusatory and look intimidating. Blackwing had gotten the cell phone fair and square, after all, so it was his now. She certainly wasn't going to try and take it away from him, nor was she going to let the kid throw rocks at him. Not that, it appeared, she had much of an aim with those rocks.

Kaitlyn stared up at the bird, wondering how she was going to get her cellphone back. She still didn't know how to get back to the Sanctuary from here. What kind of stupid bird steals a cellphone, anyway!?
>>"Are you trying to throw rocks at my bird?"
The child turned to see some sort of bike-riding gypsy lady, the proud owner of our thieving avian friend.
"It stole my cellphone!" The girl cried indignantly, as if this gave her every right to throw rocks at anything she pleased. Surely, though, the lady who claimed ownership of this bird would do something to remedy the situation. Surely, the practical concerns of a cellphone-using child outweighed the bizarre pleasure that a dumb bird would get from having something shiny.

The little girl seemed very unhappy about her lost cell phone, which Raven found very amusing. Humans were always so possessive of their belongings, it just didn't make any sense. Aside from her fortune telling tools, she only kept her belongings for as long as they remained useful and/or interesting. Usually she just bargained them away for other belongings. She never had quite gotten the whole concept of possessions, except on the most basic of levels.
"Well, if your phone is so important, why did you let Blackwing take it?" Humans, if they insisted on being so possessive of their stuff, really should do more to protect it. Blackwing had gotten the cell phone fair and square and if the girl had taken something from Raven, well, she'd have every right to it unless Raven could somehow get it back. That's just how things worked.

>>"Well, if your phone is so important, why did you let Blackwing take it?"
The girl raised an eyebrow. She had let the bird take her cellphone? That was certainly an unusual way of looking at this situation. Kaitlyn didn't like it. It was unfair, it confused her, and it made her angry. Glancing at the gypsy-woman's bicycle, the child's angry mind began to form an idea. "How important is your bike?"
Lunging forward, the child grabbed the front of the bike, then scrunched her eyes shut for a few seconds. With a loud CUH-RACK, half of the bike was reduced to tiny metal bits. The kid gave the gave the gypsy a quizzical look.
"Why'd you let me break it like that?"
Passers-by heard the noise, and many of them stopped to watch the scene unfold. Others walked away, and at least one person ran; none of them wanted any trouble.

"My bike?" Raven blinked at the little girl in confusion, a confusion that was not in any way dissapated a moment later when the girl grabbed a hold of it and proceeded to blow the bike up. She jumped back as a loud bang filled the air and debree flew everywhere, her hands shooting up to her sensitive ears. Pain erupted in her skull, as her ears protested being subject to such a loud noise and she wimpered. Up above, Blackwing jump around in agitation, wings flapping.
Raven didn't care about the bike, it was old and although she had had it for a long time, she had no real attachment to it. Besides, she could always just find another bike to replace it. What she cared about was the agonizing pain shooting through her skull from her ears.
"Why did you do that?" Raven asked in a pleading voice, once the pain had dissipated enough for her to speak again. Why did humans have to be so baffling and irrational?

Something was hurting the gypsy lady. Perhaps it was the sound of her bike blowing up. Whatever the case, Kaitlyn hadn't been trying to hurt her. For a second, the kid stared wide-eyed at the lady, worried.
>>"Why did you do that?"
The worried look went away as the child explained her reasoning: "To make it fair. I don't know how to get home without my phone, so you're going to have to get home without your bike. That's fair."
Sorry as she felt about hurting the lady, she wasn't going to apologize.

The pain in Raven's head gradually began going away, leavin gonly a quiet ringing noise in her ears. A ringing noise she could live with, agonizing death pain she could not.
"Well shy didn't you tell me you needed that phone to get home?" Raven complained. Humans. Incomprenesible. Utterly and completely incomprehensible. At least she had a good reason to want her phone back, though and now that she knew the reason she might be able to help. If there was something in it for her, of course. The bike was forgetten, not that it really mattered to begin with.
"What you need to do to get your phone back is to offer Blackwing something he wants more than a sparkly colourful phone. The better the offer the more chance he has of giving it back." Bargaining at its most simple and best.

Indignant and confused as this gypsy lady may have been, she wasn't going to get an apology, but the least Kaitlyn could do was play along with her silly games.
Now, what would a dumb bird want more than a sparkly cellphone?
After a few moments of thought, Kaitlyn grabbed a wallet out of her pocket and searched it for coins. CHAPLNSKI, ANDRIY B stared back at her from behind his driver's license picture. Anything in a Sanctuary resident's room was fair game when he left, and this kid had gotten ample warning that this particular mutant's stay in the Sanctuary would be as short-lived as it was creepy.
Aha! A quarter! And it was a very shiny quarter. Kaitlyn was never able to get the slime off of her shirt from the day she had gotten this guy's wallet, but it was definitely paying off in the long run. "Do you think he would like this?" The coin shined in the sunlight as she held it out for the lady to see.

Raven didn't expect any sort of apology out of the little girl in front of her. Apologies were human conventions, as if a few mere words could make any sort of practical difference. Thus, she wasn't in the least surprised or insulted when she didn't get an apology.
It seemed the girl was willing to bargain and that spoke volumes about her. Many humans had a tendency just to collapse in the way of the unexpected. How they had managed to take over the earth, she would never know. Maybe they had lost their survival instincts when they all moved into cities and became lazy and stupid at that time. The girl, however, was willing to adapt and willing to offer whatever she thought Blackwing might desire. Even if it was the wrong thing, at least she was trying to do something instead of just complaining about it.
Taking a careful look at the very shiny quarter, Raven sent her familiar a mental image of what was being offered. She felt Blackwing weigh his options before finally refusing the offer. As shiny as the quarter was, the cell phone was worth more to him.
"Blackwing rejects your offer," Raven informed the girl. "However, if you throw in some food, possibly some nice fish, then he is willing to reconsider." It was quite fair, all things considered.

Kaitlyn frowned. 'Blackwing' didn't even come down to look at the quarter, nor did he even hear her offer, but the gypsy did. Something seemed fishy about this... regardless, there wasn't any readily available fish in the area, so that wasn't an option for bartering. How would she be able to get her phone back now?
"Ooh!" Hotdog stand! It didn't have to be fish, even though the gypsy lady mentioned it specifically. "I could get something over there for him." She pointed at the stand, which not only sold hot dogs, but also soft pretzels, chips, and even candy. "What do you think he'd want?"

Meld conferred with Blackwing to see if he was willing to settle for a hotdog. The great bird sent back his desire that he really did want a piece of fish. Raven, however, was not without her compassion. Although her mind was half that of an opportunistic bird, the other half was still human. For a fully grown adult she wasn't certain she would have gone and done much of anything outside of relaying the message along, but chicks and children were very much alike in that they had to rely upon their parents and, it seemed, this particular child did not have a parent around. Thus was Raven willing to do just a little bit extra. She reinforced the thought of how delicious a hot dog would be, how filling and how appealing it was. Finally, reluctantly, Blackwing agreed.
"For your shiny coin an a hot dog Blackwing is willing to trade your cell phone," Raven stated. She smiled proudly at the child. She really wasn't so bad for a human. Blackwing flew back down, perching on a branch just overhead, cell phone still clutched in one claw. Just as soon as he had his prize he would set the phone down. He might even set it down gently in order to ensure its safety.

This was a relatively good deal. A cellphone for the price of a hot dog and a quarter? The gypsy probably could have asked for more, especially considering how the kid had just blown up her bike. Of course, that didn't change the fact that she was bartering for something that had just been stolen from her.
Kaitlyn had no idea why the gypsy lady was smiling, but it made her suspicious. Was the lady planning to trick her? A better question would be whether there was any other plausible way to get her phone back, and the kid couldn't think of one. With a frown and a nod, she turned around to get what the bird supposedly wanted. As if the dumb thing could talk.
When the child was done, the vendor was glad that his business had survived its close encounter with an unstable mutant kid.
With a hotdog in one hand and a quarter in the other, she presented her offering to the strangely clad woman. "Can I have my phone back now?"
