The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Her tummy was a growling... that meant she needed to feeeeed. Hefting herself out of bed, quietly so as to not wake her roommate, she dashed down to the kitchen and flicked on the light. Oh, it was glorious to live in a place where food magically reappeared all the time. She had brought in a few bags of things here and there, but some of the stuff was just... awesome.
Padding over to the fridge in shorts and a tank top, she squinted though a slight headache, loose hair, and her glasses and yanked the door open quickly. What greeted her eyes made her stomach growl all the louder.
Pizza, salad, cooked eggs, a crap load of juice and many other foods sat before her. The Greeks fingers twitched. She filled her arms to the brim with juice, milk, cold pizza and a bowl of something that looked like left over chili, until she could carry no more, then turned and kicked the fridge door shut with a skinny foot. Sure, it was not the best time to be making so much noise... but if she didn't eat she would be rather grumpy in the morning, and no one wanted that....
As she hobbled over to the table, already munching on a slice of pizza that had nearly fallen from her grasp, she tried to wiggle out a chair with her toes... and struggled. How did monkeys do it?
Once again, Maya caught someone raiding the fridge at night. It was totally normal for the Mansion, to have kids walking around hungry at weird hours and empty the kitchen because they were hungry, depressed, developing a new mutation, pregnant, in a growing spurt, etc. As for Maya, she just couldn't sleep.
She expected to find Emerald on another pre-fullmoon-raid, but the girl she found was definitely not her. She didn't even remember seeing her around the Mansion, but that didn't really mean anything. She didn't know half of the kids who lived there on and off.
She was... green.
Maya blinked and rubbed her eyes.
Ladies, Gentlemen and Mirror - Wicked the Musical comes to your home now!
Maya walked into the living room mirror, and a few seconds later she reappeared in the kitchen window, wearing the green girls reflection.
"And what are you doin', eatin' that much in the middle of the night?" she asked with a smirk, looking at her from the illusion-kitchen inside the window.
"And what are you doin', eatin' that much in the middle of the night?"
A squeal that could rival miss piggy's erupted from her throat, and the gorgon sprang up onto her tippy toes. What was left of the food in her arms went up into the air, where it spinned for a moment before gravity reconnected and it all came crashing back down. The pizza she had pilfered from the fridge landed smack dab in the middle of her head, and slowly slipped down over her fore head.
She left dizzy for a moment, nearly passed out, then regained her strength and spun around to spot the prankster. And she saw was her own reflection though. She turned her head, opening her mouth to ask a quite and frightened "hello?" but spotted the fact that her reflections head was not following her own and let off another high pitched shriek.
Her native tongue slipped back into place as her hands flew to her hair and she tugged frantically. She was losing her mind, losing it! She was hearing things, seeing things... what next!? "This... this can't be happening." She muttered, blinking behind her glasses. "It is just a dream. yes. I'm dreaming. Sleep eating." She nodded to herself, sucked in a deep breath, and faced her reflection.
"Go away, me. You do not exist." Another nod, and she turned back to her food.
The reaction was kind of what Maya had been aiming for, except ten times stronger. And louder. And more messy. With all that good food gone to waste. Maya put green hands on green hips, and stared back at the scared girl. Whatever language was she speaking? It didn't sound anything she had heard. Not like she had been big on learning any, except for Spanish, which Mom had taught her, years before.
>>"Go away, me. You do not exist."
Now that was English.
"I beg to differ." she said with a smirk "I am you, you exist, so I exist too. I am your inner..." pause "... conscience."
Yeah, as if she had an outer conscience too...
"You hungry, or jus' havin' a problem to solve by eating that much? Be honest with yourself now."
Andrea blinked, and turned back to face the window, and her reflection. Boy, she really had gone off the deep end. "My inner conscience?"
...That made a little sense, as she had heard of people talking to their inner selves before, but... Andy herself hadn't. She tilted her head a little, and set about gathering all of the things she had dropped. Most were alright, seeing as they had been in bags and coverings... but things like the pizza that had fallen were destroyed. She plucked the slice from her own head, and let it join the others in the trash as she wiped down the floor, then returned to the counter.
"If you are my conciseness, why have I never seen you before this?" She almost wanted to demand where it had been all of her life... but kept that little part inside. The reflection spoke of hunger, and why she needed to eat.
Andrea placed a hand over her stomach and frowned. "You should know, if you are me, that I eat to bury the hunger." The Greek blinked, looking at all of the food spread before her, and her shoulders drooped just a little. It was pretty pitiful, and selfish... wasn't it?
"... What other reason is there to eat anything?" She added calmly, her voice warbling just a little.
Maya took some time to get the reflection of the pizza out of the reflection of the hair too. She didn't mirror the girl's movements, but the result was kind of the same.
>>"If you are my conciseness, why have I never seen you before this?"
"Well, I can't come out to parade around like this every other minute, can I." she smirked "Even in a mutie school, folks would think ya're... um, I'm crazy."
>>"... What other reason is there to eat anything?"
Maya contemplated on that for a moment or two.
"None, really. As long as ya're not elbow neep into a bowl of ice cream and a box of tissues, I think ya're fine."
And that was that. She didn't really feel like annying the girl any longer; she was not someone that would appreciate bantering with her own reflection. Shoulda tried this on Charlotte.
"Anyway, just stopped by to tell you ya're pretty. If ya don' eat all that at once, ya're gonna stay pretty too." she grinned "That's your daily ego boost for you."
She flushed dark brown, she swiveled around to face the reflection. How did it know about the icecr-.....oh... it was her. Der. Pursing her lips, she toyed with the jug of juice she had pulled out and shifted awkwardly. Then, the reflection said something she had never uttered to herself before...
"You're pretty...
That was... new. She glanced down at a gloved hand, wrinkled her nose... and smiled just a little. Was she pretty?... Saph seemed to think so. Maybe she had just neglected to see it in herself for all these years?
"I don't gain weight... you should know that, Andrea..."
Her eyes rose again, while she was addressing herself, and she grinned at the window. "I will still need to eat however, so you should look away now if you are squeamish." She paused, pondering how odd it was to tell oneself to look away, then turned and sat at the counter. Out of all the things to eat, she was thirsty the most. Spinning off the top of the container, she hoisted herself over to the cupboard and grabbed a glass. No one wanted to drink wash.
With a glass of cold... red stuff, in her hand, she sat back down and picked up the piece of pizza she had originally been chewing on, and proceeded to devour it in five large bites.
>>"I don't gain weight... you should know that, Andrea..."
Andrea. Maya smirked, and made a mental note. Andrea, the green girl who wears gloves and speaks some weird language. And doesn't gain weight.
"Right" she muttered as the girl turned her back to her and settled down to eat. Maya slipped out of the reflection, and walked up behind her. Not with the intention of making her jump again. She wouldn't want to choke on a bite or anything. But then again, Andrea was the one who turned her back on a speaking reflection. It's amazing, really, what people can get used to after a few minutes of a conversation...
"In that case, mind if I join you?" she asked, pulling up a nearby chair "I'm always up for a midnight snack."
The Greek squeaked, but otherwise wasn't able shriek with a mouth pull of pizza. She did tumble sideways off of her chair though, then scrambled to her feet and pressed herself against the oven. First a talking window... not randomly appearing people! The dots did not get connected, and thus Andrea did not put two and two together to make the whole picture. She simply stood, awkwardly staring with pizza clutched between her teeth, and twitched.
Finally, once she was able to move though the surprise, she pulled the food from her lips and grabbed some paper towels to clean herself off. Being a dirty mess in front of yourself was a much different picture, than being a dirty mess in front of others. "Who'reyou??" She squeaked, uneasily sifting her way back over to her chair. And, more to the point, did she mind this person sitting next to her food....?
A jolt of 'must protect food' ran though her, and she gave a very brief moment of thought to growling and throwing her arms around her pile... but that was just the hunger talking. She was much more civil that that... even with a headache, ravenous appetite, and now a fluttering heart beat.
"No... I do not mind at all." She managed a weak smile, and took another bite of her pizza, trying to ignore the fact that mere moments before she had beem talking to herself...
"Geez, girl" Maya grinned, sitting down with one foot tucked under on the chair "Ya're in a school full of mutants and ya still get surprised when someone shows up out of the blue."
Reaching out she picked a sandwich from the pile and unwrapped it.
"Name's Maya, by the way. Sorry for messin' with ya. It's just a thing I do." she chuckled "An' don' be embarrassed, took me some time to get used to all the weird people around here too. At least now you know not to believe everythin' your mirror tells you."
Taking a bite from the sandwich, she looked at the girl again. She looked okay, apart from the color of her skin, but at the second look, that was not disturbing either.
"... except for that ya're pretty. I meant that." she added in a hurry before Andrea would think she meant that as a joke too. Maya had a vague idea about how it would feel like to live with a visible mutation, and she didn't want to hurt the girl's feelings.
The Gorgon blinked, and took a good sized chunk out of her pizza. What did she mean by messing with her? Maybe she had plotted to sneak up... Orange eyes narrowed suspiciously behind her dark glasses, and she finished off the food at hand with one last toothy bite. Then, it was onto the next victim...
"I am fairly used to seeing odd people... I am just not used to people sneaking up on me. After a moments pause, she shuffled though her pile and pulled out the chili-thing, and picked up a spoon she had pilfered while over by the cupboard.
"What do you mean, Mirrors and all?"
Maybe the girl has seen her talking to herself... that would be troublesome to explain. She could always deny... or joke... or just make sure there was more than enough food in her mouth to stop words from flowing out.
She flushed a dark shade of brown at being called pretty again, and shifted on her stool. Bare toes wiggled while her mouth was too full to reply, and she washed it all down with some of her juice. Why did everyone call her th-
She paused, mid blink, and turned fully to face the girl. "It was you!" She stated, awe infused with confusion tinting her accented voice. "You were in the window?" She pointed a finger, blinking, then let it go limp. How was that even possible? ... She didn't know right off the bat... but, she supposed she would find out sooner or later.
Maya grinned, munching on the sandwich. She found it particularly amusing that the green shade of the girl's skin made her blush brown instead of pink. She was used to Twyla blushing all kinds of colors, but the brown-and-green was still pretty adorable.
"Took ya long enough" she nodded "I'm a mirrorwalker. I was jus' playin' around with your reflection. I do that when I get bored. Ya wouldn't believe what people confess to their mirrors..." she chuckled "Anyway, sorry. Soo..." she looked the girl up and down "Apart from being this lovely shade of emerald, what are you in for?"
She questioned, bringing a finger to her chin as her eyes rolled up in thought. It sounded like another useful mutation, or at least a fun one. Then she remembered the reflection bit, and flushed a deeper brown. Her spoon, which was piled with food, found its way into her mouth to stifle any motherly things she might spout, and she chewed thoughtfully, then swallowed.
"So you do this often then, to... how do you say it, break the ice?" She offered a friendly smile, and plopped another spoonful into her mouth while she thought over his next question.
"What am I in for?" She blinked, gulping down her mouthful, and wrinkled her nose. Where had she heard that before..? It was right on the tip of her tongue... but... she just... couldn't...
Prison shows!
Blinking again, she looked at the girl in a new light. In a flash, she envisioned the mirror walker with many tattoo's and a bandanna... maybe with a glimpse of a wife beater too. She blinked though, and the vision vanished. The girl was normal, munching on a sandwich and asking her questions that she didn't understand. "What do you mean?" She asked, tilting her head and setting the not-what-she-had-expected-it-to-be chili aside.
>>"So you do this often then, to... how do you say it, break the ice?"
"Yeah, all the time" Maya smirked "Sometimes it backfires, though."
She still remembered the Halloween scare that didn't turn out scary at all. At least not for the one he was trying to scare. Oh well. Even a trickster can't be successful all the time...
>>"What am I in for? What do you mean?"
The question came with a strange look. Oops. Language problems.
"I mean, what's your mutation?" she explained, then looked at the girl, tilting her head "And where are you from? I heard you speak some foreing language but heck if I know what it was... I don't know many languages."
And judging from the skin color, she could be from another planet...
She shifted nervously in her seat, and snatched up a carrot. "I am from Greece..." She started, fiddling with the vegetable in her hand for a second before devouring it in a few greedy bites. "So that is where my accent comes from."
She flushed a little deeper, not bothering to inform him as to what she had actually said in Greek, and moved on to digging though her pile of food again. What was she supposed to say about her powers though?
"Well, as for my mutations, I guess you could say I can knock people out with my eyes, and turn things to stone with my hands." She felt inclined to show the girl, like she had done a few times before, but decided against it. All she had was food to show with, and she wasn't willing to waste any more after her snack companion had pilfered a sandwich.
"I... um... Guess I came here because I needed help with them." She wiggled her gloved fingers, and dove back into eating.
