The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Yup, there are flying d-dinosaurs," Amber agreed. She was beginning to run low on pancakes which mean, unfortunately, that soon she would have to clean her dishes and then go to class. "Well, not dinosaurs exactly b-but I can still ch-change into them. Well one of th-them anyway." In theory she could probably turn into more, she just hadn't found any fossils of other types. Not that she had had much opportunity to even try out the form she had acquired.
"I have t-to actually touch a fossil," Amber explained. She enjoyed discussing the finer details of powers, both her own and others. "It would be pretty cool to just read about one and th-then change though." Then again, there was something to be said about working for her forms. It was a challenge to learn a new form so anytime she did manage to acquire one she felt like she had really accomplished something. It wouldn't be nearly so much fun if she could just read a book about it.
"I th-think I become what they look like if they were s-still alive. Its hard to say b-because obviously no one has actually seen one." Amber stood up and brought her dishes to the sink. "Do you ever j-just turn invisible and spy on people?" Amber asked Fade. That's probably what she'd do if she could turn invisible, not for any malicious reasons but just because she could. She'd all ready been trying to work on her stealth skills while transformed, but even being small like a chicken wasn't as good as being completely invisible.
Amber clarified how her powers worked. She actually had to touch a fossil, she couldn't just read about it. Well, then that might be a bit more difficult. "Still, you could read about one and then research where they can be found, like in museums and such, then just break the rules by jumping over the hold out ropes and touching the fossil," she suggested. Still, there were some places that did not actually use fossils in their museums, they used replicas of those fossils. She wondered if that would work the same. "What if it's like a copy of the fossil? Like not the actual bone, but a stone statue of what they had found?" she asked, munching slowly on her pancakes.
That was true. Who knew what a dinosaur really looked like. "Yeah, I guess so. But I mean, do you usually look exactly like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park? I think it's be interesting if you were like an archaeologist and when you find fossils, you could turn into that and discover what all that dinosaur used to be able to do. It's like jumping in a time machine, huh?" she smiled, taking another bite of her yummy food. Being a dinosaur mutant definitely sounded cool.
The attention was turned back on herself and Amber asked her about her power, whether she used it to spy. Some people tended to get a little protective when she talked about walking around invisible. "Well, when I was much younger, yes, I loved doing that sort of stuff. I don't really spy on people, if I approach you while I'm invisible, it usually means I want to sneak up on you and scare you, or I'm trying to master sneaking up on you. Take for example, there's a mutant here that is blind and I am trying to get it so I could sneak up on him, still working on it. But really, I don't spy on people. I may practice in the Mansion and not want people to disrupt me, so I go invisible," she let out a small laugh when she realized what some people would do with her power. "No, I've never snuck into a boys locker room invisible," she smiled. She had been tempted before, but she never went to high school so most men she ran into had not been her age when she was into that sort of stuff, so no thank you on the locker time.
"Oh, that's exactly what I intend t-to do!" Amber stated enthusiastically. "So f-far I don't have too many forms. B-but hopefully soon my s-sister will take me somewhere I m-might be able to gain some new ones." Of course, she didn't mention that her sister was Aura, someone she had learned had some enemies, nor did she mention that usually scientists didn't like teenagers coming and playing with their precious fossils. It wasn't even that she wanted to take any of them, just a simple touch would do. But no, security always seemed to try and stop even that simple action. It was quite inconvenient really. Now, if she could turn invisible and phase through walls, it would be so much simpler then!
Amber stood up and began running water into the sink for cleaning purposes. She put her dishes into the sink and offered to take Fade's as well. "N-not exactly like Jurassic Park. They t-took some creative liberties I think." Amber shuddered visibly at the mention of studying her as a dinosaur. She had no problem with her studying herself, or even a mutant scientist friend studying her. But one of her greatest fears was the idea of some evil scientist kidnapping her and making her into some human lab rat experiment. Maybe she had read too many books or just had an overactive imagination.
"I'm trying to learn to b-be stealthy," Amber mentioned with a note of pride. She giggle softly at the idea of breaking into the boys locker room. Now there was an idea. Surely there had to be some small corner a tiny little Compsognathus could hide in, right? "I don't have much experience yet though."
When Amber offered to take her plate, she offered it up willingly. There was nothing better than not having to do the dishes. As Amber talked about how she wanted to go to the musuem and touch some of the fossils but simply did not have the stealth resources, Fade's nose for fun began sniffing. Now that would be a steal. The redhead's past revolved around theft and it was sometimes hard to live simply by the code of good. Never steal, never lie, never cheat. So far, she didn't have anyone to cheat on and she didn't steal so there was nothing to lie about. Fade's record was perfect for the time being. However, this idea struck her.
Would stealing one fossil from a dinosaur really be stealing? If it helps another mutant who can't obtain that themselves? And what if she put it back right where she found it? She would really only be borrowing to help a new friend work some more on her powers. Would that count as stealing? The mental moral battle began as she debated what to do. Borrow and help or just leave it alone? She supposed the question might be better answered from someone who was not suffering from a slight stealing addiction.
"You would just borrow them right? Just to practice with your power? You wouldn't take them for good? And do you need the entire dinosaur fossil or just one piece?" she asked, stretching back in her seat. She would not reveal her plan unless she got a solid answer that she could work with. Maybe this older sister was good at stealth and a good person who would make sure Amber did not steal those fossils. Hopefully she was.
"Oh, I d-don't even need to bring it home to practice," Amber assured Fade. Sink full of soapy water she began washing. Thankfully there weren't too many dishes so she knew it wouldn't take her too long. Not like when she had lived at the orphanage and had to clean for a dozen children. For some reason it always seemed like she was the one doing chores around the place. Maybe she was just too nice to not say no or maybe her guardians and secretly disliked and distrusted her just as much as the other children had. She would probably never know for certain but, as the turns of life would have it, it no longer mattered anyway.
"I just need to t-touch the fossil for a minute," Amber explained. "Less than a minute, really. And I only need a tiny piece. Scientist and museum owners are just so p-particular about people touching their p-precious fossils." She wasn't quite certain why Fade was even asking her these questions. It wasn't like she had eyes on the back of her head and could see the older woman's expression.
"D-do you know a way to f-find some?" It was worth asking, after all. It wasn't like Amber had too many moral qualms about sneaking into a place, not really. It wasn't like she even wanted to take anything, so surely there was nothing wrong with that was there? Just touching an old piece of bone that had turned to rock? She certainly didn't think so, though apparently many people tended to disagree.
Everything Amber had said twisted and turned in Fade's mind as she considered helping. For a moment, she thought she would just leave it be and not to become involved, but the moment passed rather quickly and she found herself excited by the idea of sneaking into a museum. It's not stealing, it's momentarily borrowing. Of course, no scientist would enjoy the thought of their precious fossils being touched or examined by someone who did not possess the creditials to handle the fossil, but it was not like Amber could graduate from the college of dinosaur shifting, so she was on her own for finding the bones.
"Well, I am good at sneaking into places. If we're just using it for a few seconds of touching, then I don't see what harm could come of taking it out of the room and into the main halls of the museum, just for you to touch it for less than a minute," she said, finally offering up her help when Amber asked why she had been inquiring so much. Now that her mind was slightly more at ease and she was waiting for Amber's reply, she got up and moved over to the sink. Since Amber was in front of it, she phased through the cabinet and stood washing the dishes on the right of the sink.
The sight of half-a-body on the countertop may have been unsettling, but mutants usually got used to that. Though there were some powers she could not watch take form, they were even a little too gross for her to watch. "I hope this doesn't look to creepy," she said, washing off her fork first. Dishes were never fun, but she could not let Amber do them all herself, especially not after making her a lovely plate of breakfast that beat her cereal ten fold.
The offer of Fade actually helping Amber borrow a fossil took her completely off guard. She still wasn't used to people actually being nice to her and offering to do things in order to help her. She was used to being the freak that no one really liked and that was always picked on. Certainly she couldn't' remember the last time anyone had ever offered to help her with anything substantial, other than maybe Aura but that was different because Aura was her sister. Even her guardians at the orphanage had only done what was expected of them and little more than that.
"Do you r-really mean it?" Amber asked, hope and disbelief both in her voice. "You'd h-help me?" She shook her head, trying to wrap it around the offer. "Why? I m-mean I'm grateful and I don't need t-to actually keep anything. B-but people just don't offer to help me w-with things like that. Or anything r-really." She wasn't just feeling sorry for herself, honestly. It was just true, people didn't help her with much of anything. It was a fact of life that she had learned to accept. She was some kind of freak that couldn't go out in the sun, was forced to dress in funny clothes and was horribly socially awkward. Just not a very likable person, really.
Amber blinked at Fade as she phased half way through the counter and began helping her with the dishes. "Thanks." It was vaguely creepy in a fascinating sort of way. She could help but stare, just a little bit, at the half disappeared body. "That's really c-cool." The words were meant. Vaguely creepy or not, cool factor definitely outweighed creepy factor. Or maybe the slight creepy factor actually helped with the awesome factor, she hadn't quite made up her mind. She was still getting used to the whole living with mutants and all their many powers thing.
Amber seemed surprised, very surprised. It looked like she wanted the help, but was uncertain if Fade wanted something in return. A favor wasn't much of a favor if the one helping got something out of it, right? Even though Amber did not live at the Mansion, she took classes here, which would open her to a variety of mutants there, and most students were taught to be polite and helpful, there must have been someone who offered to help in some other way, shape, or form. No matter, Fade was probably the first, but not the last.
"I lived a tough life out there in the city, mutants here at this Mansion helped me to grow and develop and helped me with anything I needed, so long as it was not immoral, of course. It only seems fitting that now I help anyone who needs it. If your power is harder to practice simply because you don't have the necessary tools, well, if I have the necessary tools, then sure, I'd love to help. The other ways of getting to those fossils are either through college and archaeological studies or breaking and entering, so I'd say just slipping in there is a lot easier and more hassle-free," she smiled. She was being honest, she would help, it would give her something to do, though the Danger Room could always come up with a more complicated security system for her to sneak through than a musuem, it was still practice.
Looking down, she noticed how weird it might look, but she shrugged and continued cleaning. "It comes in handy quite a lot. If you lose a key to something, you never need to find it. So I wouldn't have to deal with insurance companies if I locked my keys in the car," she laughed, even though she already did not have to deal with insurance companies because she couldn't drive. She needed to learn how to do that at some point. In Romania, she had driven a runaway truck during a reconnassance mission, but that truck crashed...
Apparently Fade's offer to help Amber in her fossil quest was real. She actually meant it and while Amber still had difficulties understanding exactly why she had offered, she wasn't about to turn it down. Sometimes it was just important to accept what life gave you and work with it. Usually life gave you horrible things, at least when it came to her life, but occasionally the things life offered were actually good. In fact, more often than not lately the things in her life had been good, as long as one didn't think about giant dinosaur eating worms or angry mobs.
"Thank you," Amber answered because she really couldn't think of anything else to say. The words felt so inadequate, here was a total stranger offering to help her and all she could think to say was some paltry thank you. "I went t-to a dig site once and f-found some fossils there. Everyone was asleep s-so they couldn't kick me out." She grinned sheepishly at the older woman. Normally she wouldn't talk about her few activities that were, perhaps, slightly less than legal but she didn't think Fade would mind so much. After all, she didn't hurt anyone nor did she actually take anything, just sort of trespassed for a little bit and then left. That wasn't really so bad, now was it?
Amber transferred over from washing dishes to drying them. "D-do you think you could put these away? I need to head to class in a few minutes." Even if it was still the tail end of summer she still had classes to go to.
Amber thanked her for the offer, which Fade guessed meant she would take her up on that. She still seemed a little shy but the stuttering was definitely decreasing, or maybe that was just the redhead getting used to it. No matter, it was not as noticeable. Amber told a story about how she once went to a dig site to touch fossils and Fade smiled. "Yeah, I'd say dig sites are pretty good places to look, but its usually just one or so dinosaurs. I got just the trick to get somewhere that has more options."
She got a good feeling from Amber. Somewhere in her mind, she told herself that Amber was not one of the kind of people that would transform into a giant T-Rex and wreck havoc on all of New York City. Then again, primeval properties could mean primeval behaviors, but it would certainly seem like a stretch for Amber to achieve something as ruthless as destroying a city. Plus, sneaking into a dig site to touch some stuff definitely gave her a much cleaner record than Fade had herself. All those years of stealing and breaking into places, Fade's good reputation was burned when she was just a child.
"Sure thing," she said, lifting up the plates Amber had just dried. She slipped out of the counter and began opening cabinets to put things away. When she had finished, the closed them all and began to wipe down her hands with the damp dish towel. "Sorry for holding you up for your class," she said, folding the dish towel. The gentle reminder of her wonderful breakfast lingered on her lips for a while and with every run of her tongue over her teeth, she felt even more full. "Thank you again for breakfast!"
"Like the research facility of the Museum of N-Natural History," Amber suggested. Yes, she had in fact considered where she might go to find all sorts of interesting forms. That was the place at the top of the list, apparently it had literally thousands of different specimens there, though maybe only hundreds in the correct era for her to actually use. She just hadn't figured out how to get in there without anyone noticing her or getting hurt.
Amber finished drying the last of the dishes and then dried her hands on a towel. "D-don't mention it," she replied with a smile. "It was nice meeting you. I h-hope to see you around." With that she put on her backpack and scurried off to class.
