The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

“Ice cream… ice cream…” Haylee repeated as she rummaged through the not-so-well-stocked freezer in the kitchen. It looked like all of the good food had been sucked out and the only things left were decrepit, frozen vegetables. She shut the door, resigned to a lonely peach she had found rolling around in the now-empty fruit bowl.
“Did someone have a party or something…?” The cranky teenager muttered as she sat on one of the tall chairs at the shiny marble counter. It was her first night at the mansion, and she couldn’t fall asleep in the bed she was assigned to. It was always that way with her, whether she was staying at a hotel or at someone’s house. If it wasn’t her bed, she couldn’t sleep in it. She could feel the bags starting to emerge under her eyes already. The next few nights were going to be long ones.
She gave a heavy sigh as she rested her head in her arms, deciding against eating the peach, and letting her mind wander about. She had only met two people today, one of them being her mansion guide and the other her roommate. Others steered clear as soon as they had seen her brooding expression and unwelcome body language. Maybe I should rethink my strategy here, Haylee thought, Maybe I shouldn't be such a loner... It couldn't hurt, could it?
Kyle had just come inside from patrolling around the grounds. His job as nightguard had so far boiled down to making sure none of the kids were out after curfew and then walking around the mansion throughout the night. He'd gotten a bit hungry though and so had decided to grab a snack from the kitchen. Upon reaching the kitchen he discovered someone else had apparently been hungry too. A teenage girl with dark brown hair was rummaging around in the freezer.
"Hello, what are you doing up so late?" He asked as he made his way over to the cupboards. Opening the door he reached in and grabbed the cookie jar. He twisted of the lid and pulled a few out then held the jar out towards the teen. "Want a cookie?" He grinned.
Haylee tried not to glare at her intruder. Wait, wait, this is what you want. You want to be friendly to others right now. Haylee quickly shifted her expression from ice to nice as she spun her chair around and faced the night guard.
>>>"Hello, what are you doing up so late?"
“I could ask the same of you,” she replied, giving a small smile, “I couldn’t sleep. New beds will do that to me.” She studied her new kitchen companion: he didn’t look like a student, no, but he looked too young to be a teacher. She noted his accent and squeaked inside. She loved accents. He wasn’t that bad looking either, but she quickly shook the idea out of her head. She had just met the guy, for Pete’s sake.
>>>”Want a cookie?”
Haylee widened her smile as she stuck her hand in the glass jar and took out one with peanut-butter chips. She let her feet dangle from the chair as she took a mini-bite from her cookie. It was good.
“What is it that you do here? You don’t give off a student-vibe,” the brunette asked bluntly.
>>"What is it that you do here? You don’t give off a student-vibe." The teen asked.
"I'm the nightguard. I don't need to sleep so I tend to get night-time jobs. It leaves me with the days free to do what I want, and gives me something to do while everyone else is asleep." Kyle put the lid back on the cookie jar and put it backed into the cupboard. "I'm Kyle, are you a new student here?" He asked as he sat on one of the kitchen stools taking a bite from a chocolate chip cookie.
>>>”I'm the nightguard. I don't need to sleep so I tend to get night-time jobs.”
“You don’t need to sleep?” Haylee was at first surprised, but then part of her remembered that she was at a mutant school. Of course there would be a night guard who didn’t sleep. Of course there would be flying lizard boys and girls with color-shifting eyes. She had to remember that those kinds of things were commonplace here.
>>>"I'm Kyle, are you a new student here?"
The girl nodded her head, chewing the last of her cookie. “I’m Haylee, and I just came in today, actually…” Her voice trailed off as she started combing though her wavy locks with her fingers. She resisted a yawn. What time was it, anyway?
“What do you guard the school from? Any hidden dangers I should know about?” Haylee asked, grinning. The lack of sleep was making her a little loopy, a little more loosened up.
>>"“What do you guard the school from? Any hidden dangers I should know about?” The young woman asked with a grin. She seemed rather tired, and only just bit back a yawn.
Kyle laughed softly. "Well, nothing so far. Apparently there have been problems in the past though, anti mutant idiots trying to... Well, I don't really know what they were trying to do, but since I've been working here the worst I've seen has been a couple of kids sneaking around after lights out. I'm here more as a 'just-in-case' than out of any real need, so far at least."
Kyle thought a moment before continuing. "How have you liked the place so far? Been settling in okay?" He asked.
>>>“Apparently there have been problems in the past though, anti mutant idiots trying to...”
For a split second, you could see a flash of rage in Haylee’s eyes at the words “anti-mutant.” She clenched the fist that was concealed in her shorts’ pocket. She quickly composed herself, however; she didn’t want to scare away any more people, especially since this night guard guy seemed like a genuinely nice guy.
>>>“Well, I don't really know what they were trying to do, but since I've been working here the worst I've seen has been a couple of kids sneaking around after lights out.”
Ah, the curfew. Well, no offense to Kyle here, but Haylee was pretty sure she would be one of those kids sneaking out. She just wouldn’t get caught. The teen had done her fair share of tiptoeing around back home.
>>>"How have you liked the place so far? Been settling in okay?”
“Ah… yeah, I guess. It’s just a little hard to wrap my mind around the whole concept of this school. And I’m not used to being a…” She stopped. That was all she was going to give her new acquaintance. He was friendly and kind, but he was still a stranger.
>>“Ah… yeah, I guess. It’s just a little hard to wrap my mind around the whole concept of this school. And I’m not used to being a…” Haylee caught herself in time, but Kyle thought he knew what she was going to say. He wouldn't pressure her about it though, if she didn't want to talk about it he wouldn't try to make her.
"Yeah, it is kinda hard to get used to this place. I've been travelling around a lot and I hadn't really seen the need for a mutant school but... Since moving to New York I've come to realize this place is important. It's more than just a school, for many it's a home and a chance at a normal life." Kyle shook his head, as if to clear the depressing thoughts from his mind. "Anyway, if you can't sleep you should have a nice warm glass of milk. I've heard that helps, no first hand experience though.." He chuckled before getting an introspective look on his face. It seemed so long ago since he'd last slept, so many years since he realized he was... different.
>>>“It's more than just a school, for many it's a home and a chance at a normal life.”
This time, Haylee couldn’t resist commenting, “Normal life? How can you have a normal life if you’re surrounded by things that are abnormal?” She for one, did not think that living at a mansion full of mutants was normal. She didn’t consider the life she was going to live now, at this school with a big X in her genes, even close normal.
The brunette realized how imprudent her words were and promptly shut her mouth. “I’m sorry… I guess the past few weeks have just been a little stressful for me.” Even as she said this, however, she didn’t change her mind.
>>>"Anyway, if you can't sleep you should have a nice warm glass of milk. I've heard that helps, no first hand experience though..."
Despite her changed mood, Haylee couldn’t help but let a small chuckle escape her lips. She knew that there were only a few drops of milk left in the fridge though, from her prior quest for a late night snack. She watched her companion’s expression shift into that of quiet thinking. She wanted to lighten up the mood.
>>“Normal life? How can you have a normal life if you’re surrounded by things that are abnormal?”
Kyle took a deep breath before responding to Haylee's outburst. After all, she was tired and in a strange place, and if Kyle was right she'd been going through some life-changing revelations lately. "Unfortunately, for some mutants this place is the closet they'll ever get to a normal life. Those with visible mutations often find it hard to be out in society, people judge mutants very harshly and a lot of mutants have been kicked out of schools and the like. Education is a part of 'normal' life and for some this school is the only place to get that. And here, surrounded by other mutants, being a mutant really abnormal?"
Haylee apologized and Kyle was glad his little milk comment cleared the air somewhat and put things back on a more positive note. >>“So you travel? Where have you been to?”
"Well, I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, and after finishing school I traveled Aus for about a year... Then... Well, then I came to America. Have a look at what this country has to offer." Kyle thought it best not to reveal the exact event that had lead to him leaving his home country so he took another deep breath and carried on. "I've been living in small towns across America for a year now and only recently moved to New York City when I needed to see a doctor." He gave Haylee a lopsided grin. "What about you? Where do you hail from?"
>>>“Those with visible mutations often find it hard to be out in society, people judge mutants very harshly and a lot of mutants have been kicked out of schools and the like.”
The teen grimaced at those words, a flash flood of memories pouring through her brain. Oh, she had first-hand experience with that. Haylee directed her attention to tracing the patterns in the wood-panel flooring, trying her hardest to distract herself from the turmoil she felt growing inside. She was tired, and really didn’t feel like fighting her feelings.
>>>“And here, surrounded by other mutants, being a mutant really abnormal?"
“I meant that… being in a mutant school in general is abnormal. I mean, how many of these do you see, honestly?” Haylee countered, trying to keep her tone at a discussion-level rather than an argument-level. She tended to blur those boundaries, much to the annoyance of those conversing with her.
>>>“I've been living in small towns across America for a year now and only recently moved to New York City when I needed to see a doctor.”
“I see. Why so much movement, if you don’t mind me asking?” She opted to not ask about the doctor-seeking, despite the grin Kyle gave her. The brunette didn’t want to get too personal, and medical history was a bit in that category.
>>>"What about you? Where do you hail from?”
Haylee gave a smirk and replied, “I come from the faraway region of the Chicago suburbs, mid-west from this fine city. I don’t come from somewhere cool, like you.”
>>“I meant that… being in a mutant school in general is abnormal. I mean, how many of these do you see, honestly?” Haylee asked, her voice noticeably restrained.
Kyle thought for a moment. "Maybe it'd help if you think of this place as just another type of school. There are schools for the gifted, schools for those with special needs and this place. A school for mutants. It's a different kind of normal than you're used to, but it's still normal."
>>"Why so much movement, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Kyle's face dropped a little at the question. "It's fine, I guess."He sighed before answering. "Since I don't need to sleep I usually get night time work so that I have the days free. Unfortunately, working at night then walking around town, reading in parks and what-not, someone's bound to notice eventually. I learned that when people started getting curious it was time to move on... But here, in the only mutant school I've heard of, I'm not some sleepless freak, I'm normal. As normal as can be I suppose." He finished with a chagrined smile on his face.
((So sorry for the delay! Let's just say I've been having some insomnia of my own... >.>))
Kyle brought up a valid point, of course, but Haylee still disagreed. She didn’t think she would ever get used to the school, or mutant life for that matter. No matter how she thought of it, normal just didn’t fit. Maybe she was just being narrow-minded.
Either way, her thought bubble promptly popped as her kitchen-mate’s face fell. She instantly regretted asking about his traveling. Good job! You were trying to avoid getting personal and you’ve the hit jackpot instead! The girl chastised herself, unsure of what to do. She avoided looking at his face and tried not to fidget with her hands, listening uncomfortably to his saddened words.
>>>"Since I don't need to sleep I usually get night time work so that I have the days free. I learned that when people started getting curious it was time to move on... But here, in the only mutant school I've heard of, I'm not some sleepless freak, I'm normal. As normal as can be I suppose."
“I…I see. That’s why you’re a night guard here…” It was Haylee’s turn to drop her head. Guilt drilled into her weary brain as she now understood why Kyle believed the school was a place to have a normal life. It was that place for him. And she had just been telling him that it wasn’t. Great way to make friends, Haylee, just tell them that they’ll always be an outcast.
“I…I…” Just apologize. Or at least say something along those lines.”Um… well…” God, just say anything! “Do you want to go for a walk? Just around the grounds.” Smooth.
Kyle's thoughts were still slightly depressed and focused on the past when Haylee spoke again, breaking into his reverie.
>>“I…I see. That’s why you’re a night guard here…” Kyle nodded at this, forcing his thoughts away from depressing topics he glanced up at his new acquaintance. Haylee seemed a little sad that she'd brought up bad memories and so, after stammering a little she asked if he'd like to go for a walk around the grounds.
"Sure, I guess. It's pretty nice outside at the moment, the sky is almost cloudless and you can see the moon really well." Kyle slipped off the stool and took a few steps towards the doors. "We could have a quick stroll then maybe you could try to sleep again. Don't want to be too tired come morning do you?"
Kyle opened the kitchen door and briefly wondered if he should be taking night-time strolls when on duty, but figured he could say he was just doing his rounds. When they got back inside he'd probably wander the halls a bit to see if anyone else was awake.
The girl followed suit and clumsily hopped off her tall chair. She wobbled a bit before righting herself by grabbing the side of the counter. Yep, she was definitely more than a little out of it.
>>>"We could have a quick stroll then maybe you could try to sleep again. Don't want to be too tired come morning do you?"
Haylee simply nodded, even though she knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway. There were too many thoughts floating around in her mind about normalcy and mutations and the like. The classic, keep-you-up-all-night thoughts. It wasn’t like she had anything to do the next day either. “So what do you do in the daytime here?” She asked as she followed Kyle to the kitchen door. She briefly thought about if it was chilly outside, but realized that it really didn’t matter anyhow. It could be snowing and her body would still keep itself warm. She had to remember that.
