The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

With the non-verbal permission given in the form of a toothy grin, Maya reached out slowly, and touched the dinosaur. The fact itself that she was touching a dinosaur was overwhelming enough that the rest didn't even register in her brain for a while; just the fact itself.
She's a mutant. She's human. She's a student here, like everybody else. ... She's a freakin' dinosaur.
She didn't feel particularly alive. Maya stroked the scaly skin along the creature's neck, and poked at the claws carefully, with all the scientific curiosity her inner child could muster. She was careful not to hurt ot startle the dino, and also not to touch her too much like she would touch a pet. She was still a person...
"Very cool." she grinned finally "I bet many kids'll envy you for it in the school... so. Um. Wanna shift back, or...?"
Amber puffed up her feathers appreciatively at the attention she was getting. Funny how she didn't like this type of attention nearly so much when she was in human form. Actually, she really didn't like attention at all while in human form, preferring to fade into the background. It was somehow different as a dinosaur though.
Shifting back sounded like a marvelous idea, although it did provide its problems. Such as, exactly how was she supposed to do it? Amber thought back to the previous times she had shifted back, including the most recent time which was almost on purpose. She knew shifting was triggered by fear and every time she shifted back she was in a position of relative calm. Well, there was nothing to be afraid of presently, so maybe trying to increase her sense of calm while thinking human thoughts might work?
Before beginning her attempts, Amber gestured with her hands for Maya to turn her back. Just because the other teen was also a girl didn't mean she would be any less embarrassed when she shifted back, completely pale white and naked. Only after the other girl had turned her back did Amber intend to begin her attempts to change back.
It was funny, watching a dinosaur try to communicate through gestures. More like, it was something she'd only seen in cartoons before. It looked a bit comical, and Maya chuckled, before the message itself got through.
"Wha... oh. Yeah, sure. Sorry."
She was familiar with all the unpleasant side-effects of shifting from one form to another. In her case, it was mostly clothing problemst (she absolutely loathed shifting into Gawain before she could take off Maya's clothes), but naturally, shifting from reptile (?!) to human, with your clothes already on the floor, was bound to be a bit more complicated than that.
Maya turned her back to the dino.
"Just... um, chirp, if ya need help or somethin'."
Once Maya had turned around, Amber began concentrating on her attempt to change back. What was it that she found relaxing and nonthreatening in the world? Only one thing came immediately to mind and that was her violin, so she turned her thoughts in that direction. Her violin was her solace in the world. Whenever things got bad, that's where she would always turn in order to retain her sense of balance and calm.
Once Amber had latched onto to the image of playing her treasured instrument, it only took a couple of minutes for her to feel the start of the changes in her body. Much like when she had first changed, it began as a prickling and swiftly changed to a burning agony. Scales and feathers returned to flesh, teeth receded and limbs shifted and twisted. Somehow she managed to refrain from screaming with the pain and once the change was finally completed, she swiftly put her robes back on.
"Y-you can turn around now," Amber suggested to Maya. When the other girl returned her gaze to Amber she would be greeted with the biggest grin ever. It was, after all, the first time she had completely intentionally changed back to her human form and that was the best accomplishment ever.
Maya listened intently as the shift happened behind her back; her own shifting almost had no sound at all, and she doubted othrs would be much louder than that, but still, she couldn't watch, so she listened.
>>"Y-you can turn around now"
Maya did so, and mirrored the girl's grin.
"As I said. Well done." she chuckled "So, now that ya've got your vocal chords back... care to tell me how your shiftin' feels? Does it hurt?"
She didn't even realize the slip she made; and even if she did, she wouldn't have cared. Sharing powers, one mutant with another, was everyday routine in the shcool, and in the past few months, she got used to it too. The reason why she didn't usually mention gender shifting among her abilities was simply that she didn't think of it as one. It was something that just... happened regularly. Not like shifting into a dinosaur.
"Shifting sucks," Amber answered honestly. In fact, it more than sucked it was pretty much the most painful thing she had ever experienced. "B-but once I'm shifted its great." Also entirely true. In many ways she even preferred being in dinosaur form than in human form, not the least of which was the fact that she didn't need to worry about her skin burning. In fact, if she could speak while shifted it would have been absolutely perfect.
Belatedly Amber registered exactly how Maya had stated her question and gave the other girl a quizical look. "You shift t-too?" Maybe she shifted into a mirror or something funny like that. Mutant powers really were amazing.
>>"Shifting sucks. B-but once I'm shifted its great."
"Yeah." Maya nodded in agreement. It sounded pretty much like her own experience. She wondered how Calley felt like when he shifted into animals. He made a mental note to ask him when he showed up.
>>"You shift t-too?"
"Yea I do." Maya smirked, walking back to the kitchen, trusting Amber to follow "I shift into a guy. But I guess it's not as big a change as turning into a dinosaur..." she chuckled at the girl "Needs some practice, huh."
"You shift into a g-guy?" Amber blinked in surprised confusion. Well, it was certainly unique she'd give the girl that. Mutations really did come in every possible colour and form imaginable and this, if nothing else, proved it.
"I b-bet it makes f-finding a guy easier," Amber stated with a shy grin. Then realized, belatedly, that if Maya was a guy part of the time, maybe she didn't like guys at all, maybe she liked girls. At that realization, her cheeks went deep red and her eyes went to the floor in embarrassment. "I'm s-sorry, I shouldn't have p-pried."
Looking out a window and realizing it was starting to get late, Amber realized that she should probably begin making her way back to Sanctuary. "I sh-should be going. D-do you think you could show me to the d-door?"
>>"I b-bet it makes f-finding a guy easier... I'm s-sorry, I shouldn't have p-pried."
Maya laughed, shaking her head.
"Never mind, kid, that's the least embarrassing question anyone's ever asked me on that topic." she grinned "And nah, I don' usually look for guys, by the way."
>>"I sh-should be going. D-do you think you could show me to the d-door?"
"You don' live here?" she asked, a bit surprised; after hearing all the sad stories about mutant children being abandoned, she just didn't think someone like her would be living outside of the Mansion. Oh well. If she had a decent home, good for her.
"It's through here" she nodded, leading Amber to the front door "Nice meeting you, dino girl" she smiled "I hope to see you around often."
