"What? In fencing? Injuries are rare if you go to a group as they wear protective gear and the weapons are blunted." Gears replied, it was true... "I mean if you hit someone with enough force you could break something of theirs; in sabre I've found it to be the wrist or the collar bone but in epee for example people can damage their knees from the impact hits. However, injuries are rare when fencing is treated as a sport."
He scratched his head, obviously if it were for real then injuries were common place and usually serious but he presumed that she could guess to that. "Historically, foil and epee were regulated because too many people died in duals: they used to barb the tips so that a thrust wouldn't lethally wound an opponent. Too many duellists died in pointless feuds and that was the reason duelling became non-lethal as a legal practise. Since then of course, it has now become a martial art or sport form, depending on the group you attend." He wasn't sure if he was boring her, but the history sometimes helped to explain the mechanisms behind the modern practises.
"Sabre was the only weapon of the three that could only be regulated by blunting as it uses the edge as well as the tip. Nowadays its next to impossible to kill another unless one uses real weaponry, which of course doesn't take place in the public arena." Slade's previous weapon was very real and had been very dangerous, but that was because he fenced for real and not as part of a martial art or sport activity...

Fencing, Meld was becoming more sure of, was something that she may just have to check out. What better way to let off some steam than good old fashioned non-lethal combat? Plus, it might even have some additional more practical applications if she could get her hands on a non-blunted weapon and, given her metal working experience, that would be relatively simple because she could simply make one herself.
"I think I may just have to check that out. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to spar with someone unarmed without hurting them when you have blades literally sprouting out of you." Meld smirked, realizing that Gears might not be all that surprised after all. He may not have blades growing out of his limbs but, having metal limbs herself, she knew that even being hit by the blunt end of a metal limb could cause some serious damage of not careful.
"Yeah I get that a lot, although in a different way, hell i pack more of a punch than the average guy considering I'm made of metal." Gears thought about non-lethal sparring, it wasn't impossible for him but it was easier when against a stronger mutant or a pretty durable kind of guy... "I find that its easy to practise the technique without applying much strength, so I can spar with normal people but obviously i prefer to spar with those more, uh, suited to my size and stature. It's also something you can do alone, the numerical parry structure and building of muscle-memory movements relax me when I need to let off steam." Gears found it odd to say "muscle-memory", obviously it was a blanket term but it still sounded strange coming from a guy who had no human 'muscles' to speak of. "If you do start it up and are looking for some practise then if I'm around in NYC I can give you some time gal, although I need to get on aqcuiring a new practise sword." Gears thought he might still have his combat-ready sword, but that definitely wasn't appropriate for a non-lethal training bout. Hell no, "So have you travelled anywhere else besides NYC since you moved away from home or was it a straight path for mutant central?" Gears had found time to travel after moving to New York, but many took years to find their way to NYC for what ever reasons they had encountered.

"I tell you what," Meld proposed. "You teach me the basics and I'll give you two things. First, I'm sure I can make you a sword. All I need is a little info to go on and general designs. I'm good at what I do. Second, I can give you a sparring partner that can take a bit of a beating." With the added benefit that with or without the use of swords, blunted or not, if Gears agreed then her own sparring partner would also be resistant to taking a beating.
"It was pretty much right to mutant central. Where else was someone with metal limbs going to go?" That part of Meld's life was still among the fuzzy, barely remembered years. Even with as poor a state as her memory was in, however, she was reasonably certain that if she'd been somewhere else she would at least have some vague glimpse of it.
"When your mutation first developed, did it come all at once?" The development of mutations was something Meld was particularly interested in, especially considering the soon to be released drug that Lori had told her about.
Gears nodded, it sounded like a plan. "Sure why not, I've never taught before but I know enough to do so I'll bet." That wasn't entirely true, while he knew enough to teach her how to fight the best teachers had spent their lives honing a multitude of different styles and techniques. He'd only been fencing for a few years, but it would be enough to teach Meld a thing or two.
Gears paused after her next question, he would have bitten his lip were he able to. The events surrounding the birth of his mutation still haunted him, as did the nightmares if he was honest. He'd give the answer straight but Gears wasn't about to share proper details just yet, hell no. "Uh, instant: or at least that's how I remember it. It all came at once..." Gears tilted his head slightly, feeling a slight pang itching at the back of his throat. It had been six years and he still hated himself for what had happened that day, feeling her gaze attempting to fathom his sudden change in mood he clapped his hands softly and forced a smile. "Never mind, history can be a b*tch! What plans have you got for the future?" And in an instant Gears' was back, just as falsely optimistic and bouncy as ever before. Such was the necessity of life as a mutant...

Meld grinned at Gears, anticipating finally having a decent opponent again. Even if she was completely new at fencing, how much different could it be from the sports she was all ready familiar with? She was a combatant, both unarmed and with blades and, from the sounds of it, fencing was just another form of combat with some fancy rules stuck on for safety and competitions sake. Either way, it was going to be fun and, with any luck, a bit of a challenge as well.
Meld could tell that she had hit a nerve asking about the history of Gears' powers, something she hadn't been meaning to do. "We all have our dark points in our history," Meld commented, thinking about her sister whom she long presumed dead. "As for the future, I'm not too sure. Guess I'm just taking what life sends my way right at the moment." Meld shrugged, forcing the images of her sister out of her head. Now was not the time to go after her and rescue her from her parents and the asylum they had put her into, but that time was coming.
"Fantastic Gal," Gears chirped as he had a ginal swig from his flask. It was lucky that Meld was drinking coffee because a waitress had been giving his dirty, if subtle, looks over his blatant 'bring-your-own-fuel-filled-flask-rather-than-purchase-from-the-store' activities. He realised that time was getting on and he needed to get going towards Queens before the rush hour started up again. "Unfortunately I'd better be on my way, have to check if the old home is still my home and all. If you want I can give you a lift back to the Sanctuary, otherwise give me your cell number and I'll pop you a call some time ok?" Slade flipped his glove compartment again and after slotting his flask back in pulled out a busted up mobile phone. He flet like he might have made a new friend today, certainly a good start to his return home.

At Gears' urgings, Meld passed along her cell number. "It was good to meat you Gears. I've still got some things to do around the city, but I'll certainly take a rain check on that ride, if you don't mind." Riding around in a mutant car certainly did sound interesting, but now was not quite the time.
"I'll see you around. Good luck getting your home back." Meld inclined her head towards Gears and began to walk out of the shop, blinking behind her with her tail eye. Even departing from a relatively safe place it still couldn't hurt to be careful, just in case. Plus, hopefully she had just made a new sparring partner and potential ally.
