The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Sawyer's parents were gone, but that didn't really change much about the sixteen year-old's sour mood. The enrollment process truly hadn't gone according to plan, after all, he was here, wasn't he? As he thought about it however, maybe being here was better than spending another minute with his parents. He truly disliked them at this point, they were just ruining his entire life. He had to admit however, he did like Jenny a little. She was a pretty interesting woman, with her ever-changing eye color and very friendly demeanor. Now however she was far in the back of his mind. It had been two hours since his parents had left for the airport. They were probably on the flight back to Seattle at this point, probably thinking about how they'd be better off with him gone. Right, he had reasons to be in a sour mood.
He had already been into all of the areas of the Mansion, having used his handy-dandy ability, which allowed him to run at quite a rapid speed. In a mere ten minutes, he'd created somewhat of a mental map for himself, something he often did, due to the fact that his ability also had the disadvantage of rendering him half-blind while running at his fullest. It was pretty annoying, the fact that his senses just couldn't keep up with him. Then again, it had allowed him to develop somewhat of a good memory, being able to know his surroundings quite easily without his sight. Still, it didn't stop the occasional bumping into people, walls and furniture.
At this particular instant, Sawyer was sitting on the steps leading to the second story of the Mansion, watching with expressionless features as two students argued over something that was beyond him. He did catch the word 'Danger Room' however, but that didn't really ring much of a bell. Who cares what a stupid Danger Room is, anyway? Definitely not him. It was probably just the place where students had their detention. He would get to see it pretty soon if his theory was correct, he had no doubt about it. Detention was like his second home.
As his thoughts continued on, he almost didn't notice somebody approaching him. It wasn't until the person spoke to him that it actually registered that he finally had his dorm key. Well, it was about time. ”What room is it, again?” he asked. The staff member told him where to go, and that he had a room mate too. Honestly, Sawyer didn't care about a stupid room mate, he wouldn't be in his room other than to sleep, anyway. They would probably not even meet for a while. Especially since Sawyer's sleep patterns were slightly off. He usually went to bed at the crack of dawn and woke sometime in the late afternoon.
Five minutes and a speedy run later, Sawyer had found his room, opened the locked door and dropped his bags and suit cases in a heap next to the closet that was designated to him. His room mate wasn't here yet, but he had a general idea that the room would be quite a mess all of the time. Clothes, books, some archery gear... Oh well, at least his room mate wasn't a complete clean freak – he could be messy himself, so it wouldn't be all that bad. There was a free, bare desk, bed and dresser for Sawyer, which were probably the only clean things thus far. Looking at his reflection in one of the mirrors in the room, the teenager couldn't help but groan. This would be a long few years.
Gawain was not expecting a visitor. He rarely had any. Thanks to his useful abilities, he was usually the one who went to visit others. No, he was not expecting to see anyone in his room. Ever. And still, here he was...
Gawain walked into the mirror, carrying a bag of cherries he'd just... acquired - just to find another reflection already there: a guy about the same age as him, blonde hair, annoyingly blue eyes, and the unique "just got dropped off by my human parents" look all over him. Lost puppy, yay.
The young knight stared at the boy.
"Hey. You. Watcha doin' in my room?"
It was obvious. Someone assigned him a roommate. Gawain hoped it was Sam. He would have a reason to beat up the teacher again. Not that he needed one.
Climbing out of the mirror, Gawain stood before the blonde guy, looking him over.
"How did ya even get in here?..." blink "Oh. Keys. Right."
He was not sure where his keys were. If he had any at all...
Yeah, this definitely sucked. Summer would be torture this year, without a doubt the worse he'd had thus far. Still staring at himself in his room mate's mirror, he passed a lazy hand through his blond hair. That was when it happened; someone appeared as if from thin air. One second he was alone in the room, staring at himself in the mirror, and the next he was standing in front of a boy.
A boy that looked strangely familiar, yet Sawyer couldn't quite remember just where he'd seen him.
Perhaps around the school? He had been here for a few hours now after all. It was somewhat confusing, and when the boy actually spoke, it took a few seconds for Sawyer to actually grasp the words.
He watched, his expression as statue-like as always, as the dark-haired, familiar-looking boy climbed out of the mirror and asked another question, only to answer it himself. Glancing around at the room, his room, he summoned up a decent answer. Well, he believed it was.
"I guess you're my room mate." he said, lacking in emotion. Poor kid, he would probably think Sawyer was a careless, emotionless bastard. "So, you're a phaser or something?" he added, throwing the keys to his new room on top of his suit cases and walking over to his bed, where he sat down and continued to watch the boy.
>>"I guess you're my room mate. So, you're a phaser or something?"
Nah, buddy, you are my roommate.
Gawain didn't say that out loud. It would have sounded childish. Besides, Blondie here didn't look thrilled about going to mutant high, so he might as well be nice to him. Maybe there was a tragedy there in the background or something. Wouldn't be the first around here. Gawain sighed. Having a room of his own and making as big a mess as he wanted was obviously over. Duh. Not to mention... Maya. Blondie was in for a treat.
Setting the bag of cherries down he walked over and extended a hand to his new roommate.
"Gawain Morris. Nice to meet ya." he smirked a bit "Nah, not phaser. Mirrorwalker. What are you in for?"
Honestly, Sawyer could tell for a fact that things weren't going well for the two boys. In any other circumstance, Sawyer would have no problem making friends. He was generally an alright guy, but the sheer fact that he was here at Xavier's made him irritable. Sure, he had never really talked about himself much even back in Seattle, but at least back there he'd been decent. Sociable. Definitely not angry. Well, people would have to deal with the new Sawyer.
Well, maybe his roomie wasn't considering Sawyer a hopeless case after all. He had extended his hand, and seemed to cool down a little. Having a room mate was probably not something the fellow Mutant wanted; probably not as much as Sawyer didn't want to attend the school, but enough to make him slightly hostile. The boy was trying, Sawyer had to give him props for that.
He hadn't tried yet, and hadn't considered trying either. Maybe he could... Sure, he wasn't happy about it, but he could at least try to make his life here somewhat livable. Not only for him, but for others who were happy to be here as well. He wasn't going to rock the boat for everyone. Well, he would attempt not to. "Sawyer, Sawyer Shepherd." he introduced himself.
Smirking back at the boy as they shook hands, he couldn't help but be slightly impressed. "Mirrorwalker, sounds pretty cool. Definitely something I've never heard of before. As for me..." he drifted off, deciding he could give Gawain a show. And so he got to his feet and in the blink of an eye, had crossed the length of the room, leaning against the wall as if nothing had happened. "Super speed." Obviously.
>>"Mirrorwalker, sounds pretty cool. Definitely something I've never heard of before. As for me..."
You haven't heard half of it. Smirk.
Swoosh.
>>"Super speed."
Gawain blinked at the spot where Sawyer had been just a moment before, than turned around towards the voice.
"Okay, that's pretty cool too." he admitted with a grin. Also, a classic. One like Gawain really had to appreciate the classics.
"Welcome, then."
Gawain was suddenly aware of the fact that there were clothing items scattered around the room. Both Gawain and Maya clothing items. Damn.
"Umm. Sorry for the mess." he fought not to turn pink in the cheeks as he scratched the back of his neck "Haven't been spendin' much time here lately..."
Yeah, right.
Gawain couldn't hold back another grin as he wondered what Speedy was thinking about him right now. He moved to do some damage control and collect his belongings from the floor and furniture.
"So. What brings you here?" he chuckled "Besides, y'know, the obvious."
Another smirk on Gawain's part. This kid seemed to get higher and higher on Sawyer's list of people he could potentially learn to like every few seconds. His earlier assumption of not getting along with his roommate had quickly faded away, replaced with some slight bit of hope... Then again, hope had been against him for a while now. He had hoped that somehow his parents would decide he should go back to Seattle. He had hoped Jenny would realize he wasn't good for the school. Hope led him nowhere, so perhaps it wasn't good to hope for something.
He would just have to wait and see how things unfolded. That was a good way to start. That, and perhaps a little bit of showing off with his power, both ways to start off a potentially epic friendship between two very epic Mutant boys. Well, at least that's what he thought.
Sawyer smirked, yes. Pretty cool indeed. "Thanks, it wasn't even my fastest speed though. I would most likely have crashed into the wall if I would've gone any faster... 100 miles per hour, that's pretty much how fast I can go." the fastest Mutant in New York said.
He had officially been welcomed, that had gone pretty smoothly. Sawyer nodded, "Thanks. I'll get my stuff unpacked eventually." he said, glancing around quickly at the mess. Fortunately for Gawain, he did not notice any feminine objects around, which included the girl clothing. "Oh, don't worry about keeping the place neat. I can be messy myself...I am messy myself. I'm kind of scared for our guests in the future..." he added with a slight laugh, walking at a normal speed toward his new bed once more.
He made himself comfortable on the bare mattress, leaning against the wall. He didn't really pay much attention to Gawain as he attempted to clean up, instead looking out of the window at two or three students spending their time outside. Simmer truly was coming around quickly.
What brought him here? The question made Sawyer roll his eyes at the ceiling above. "My parents were getting paranoid, thinking I would end up murdering someone or something. They decided they'd be better off without me around for a while... They think this place will help me learn to behave myself." he said with a snort. Yeah. Right. Behave. No, his parents were just thinking of themselves, not him.
>>"Oh, don't worry about keeping the place neat. I can be messy myself...I am messy myself. I'm kind of scared for our guests in the future..."
Gawain chuckled at that, quickly picking up Maya's clothes and stuffing them into the dearest drawer. Glancing at Sawyer he could see there was no need to worry: the new guy was not really paying close attention. Gawain noted that. It will make his future plans much easier to realize.
>>"My parents were getting paranoid, thinking I would end up murdering someone or something. They decided they'd be better off without me around for a while... They think this place will help me learn to behave myself."
"Murder how, run them to death?" Gawain grinned, plopping down onto his bed once he decided the state of the room was acceptable (according to teenage guy standards that is) "Human parents, huh." he chuckled "Common story aroun' here..."
Also. Behave, huh. Gawain had a suspicion that he would come to like this guy. Eventually.
"Lotsa things to learn around here." he said, careful not to show too much enthusiasm "Classes to take...."
I skip most of them
"... sports to do..."
I do jousting from the back of another student
"... after school activities..."
We fight monsters
"... field trips..."
We fight monsters in Central Park
"... that kinda stuff. And, of course, there's also the X-men." he shrugged, waving that last part away "If it makes ya feel better, you could be at places much worse than this one..."
Sawyer laughed, running them to death. That would be pretty hard to accomplish, yet all the while somewhat fun to watch. "I don't know what they believed, I have no idea why they even thought I was capable of murder... Okay, I admit I do some pretty bad stuff, but... Yeah, not murder." he admitted with a sly grin on his face. "Yeah, common Humans. They tried for a while... Once they found out. They still do in a way. They're not doing a very good job at hiding the fact that in the end, they are scared of what I could do."
Sure, he could only run... but in a Human's eye, a Mutant with a seemingly harmless power could very well be the end of the world. Maybe the fact that Sawyer constantly attracted, not to mention looked, for trouble was another reason why they were led to believe he could do some bad stuff... very bad stuff. He wasn't going to admit it, not even to himself, but they probably had good reasons to think he was dangerous. A potential threat. It was no right to send him off to a Boarding School 2800 miles away from home. Sawyer also had reasons to be pissed off.
"Learn, yeah." he said, now flopping on his back, his hands sliding under his head as he stared upward at the bare, while ceiling. "I must warn you Morris, I'm not the type to take classes very seriously." he chuckled a little, his expression somewhat somber now. Just thinking about actually going to classes here was pretty bad for him right now. Not only would he have to spend the entire summer locked up in this Freak School, but at the end of it he'd have to attend classes while being locked up in here.
"Sports are a'right though. I did a few of them back in Seattle. Did you know I was the best in my track team?" he said, grinning at his own little joke. Of course he was the best, he didn't even have to try to beat everyone... He also played basketball; he was pretty good at that too. When Gawain mentioned the X-Men, it peaked at his interest slightly. He hadn't heard of that yet. "What's the X-Men?" he paused, recalling something on the News a few months ago. He had heard the name before... "I think I heard of them. Some kind of super team?" he added.
>>"I must warn you Morris, I'm not the type to take classes very seriously."
Gawain actually laughed at that, mirroring his movements as he lay back on his bed too. There was something about Sawyer that just spelled BAD INFLUENCE in big capital letters. Then again, maybe it was just the mirror...
"Yea I know, I only got signed up for them after they caught me stealin' beer from the boss." he nodded pulling a serious face "The music teacher can freeze people though. Better be careful."
>>"Sports are a'right though. I did a few of them back in Seattle. Did you know I was the best in my track team?"
"No kiddin'." Gawain smirked "Seattle, you say?... I grew up there. Kinda. I left when I was 13." It was funny, meeting someone from he place he used to call home. Even with this many mutants running around, you rarely ever met someone from the same place.
>>"What's the X-Men? I think I heard of them. Some kind of super team?"
"Yeah, kinda. It's a mutant superhero team that saves the world every once in a while." he grinned "I'm tellin' ya, Speedy, mandatory classes here might suck, but the electives rock. Hard."
Sawyer laughed, Gawain moving up furthermore on his list. "Guess I'm not the only guy out there who likes a bit of trouble once in'na while." he said, and then smirked at the music teacher comment. That was pretty interesting, even for a teacher. "Music's not my thing, so no worries there." he shrugged.
Sawyer nodded. "Born and raised there. I did some traveling, but I never moved away." he paused for a second. The fact that Gawain looked so familiar returned to him. They were both from Seattle, maybe this guy had been at the same Elementary school as Sawyer or something? Maybe their parents had been friends? "So, have you been at the Mansion for all of those years?" he asked, pushing away the idea of knowing his room mate from somewhere.
Sawyer nodded, noticing the nickname Gawain had given him: Speedy. He liked it. Sure, he'd given himself the codename of Speedman a few years back, and Meld only knew him that way, but nobody had ever really given him a nickname. Honestly, not many people up until today had had the chance to see Sawyer use his ability... Apart from a few Mutants he'd met back in Seattle. Oh, and most of his school had learned about his Mutant powers the day he'd been expelled. A lot of them had witnessed it with their own eyes.
Ah, so he'd been right about the X-Men. "Did they have anything to do with that Romania Registration Act thing a few months back?" he wondered, now remembering when he'd heard of the X-Men. Ah, electives. He glanced at Gawain from the corner of his eye, "Sort of like any normal school." he said. "Electives are usually better than the necessary crap. I guess it helps that you also get to pick what you want and don't want." he shrugged.
>>"So, have you been at the Mansion for all of those years?"
"Nah" Gawain shook his head "Been wanderin' around, and ended up here a few months ago. I was not plannin' on staying long either, but... plans changed." he smiled "This place is as good as any other, for people like us."
>>"Did they have anything to do with that Romania Registration Act thing a few months back?"
"I guess so." Gawain shrugged "That's stuff for the grown-ups. Students an' trainees only get to fight local bad guys and monsters." he grinned at Sawyer "Off the record, of course. I dunno if you've heard 'bout the Christmas Special in Central Park. It was one heck of a field trip."
Speedy seemed to like the place more with every minute. Gawain was glad he could help. Making friends helped him feel at home in the Mansion, and he was willing to do the same for someone who just got dropped off by his parents. It was the right thing to do.
>>"Sort of like any normal school."
Another shrug.
"Dunno, I never went to school before this one." he left it at that "There are a few rules ya'll have to learn if you're gonna stick around, but all in all, yeah, I guess it's not that different."
Sawyer listened to Gawain. He was slowly starting to wonder if he hadn't been completely wrong about the Mansion. Even a guy who seemed to have a lot in common with him appeared to like it. The more he thought about it, the more he realized he hadn't really seen many stuck-up, nerdy know-it-alls yet. Jenny had seemed pretty nice and definitely not one of those goodie-two-shoe types. Then there had been Shin, who too had seemed pretty normal. The people he'd bumped into occasionally in the past few hours hadn't been all that bad either. Sure, he wouldn't be convinced so quickly, but maybe this place wasn't completely horrible. Maybe Gawain was right.
"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my parents, so to be honest my judgment is a bit clouded by my annoyance at them right now. I guess only time will tell, really." he decided to say at Gawain's words. Honestly, maybe he would be better off if his parents hadn't set up all sorts of rules for him to fallow here. If his parents hadn't told the staff he was a handful and needed to be watched at all times. Yeah, that was what was pissing him off... the fact that he was completely and utterly boxed in. It wasn't the Mansion's fault, it was his parents'. They always ruined things.
Sawyer nodded, and then laughed at the word 'monster'. "I guess some Mutants are pretty monstrous when you think about it." he said. Honestly, he wondered what exactly was considered as a Monster. He had fought a bunch of Mutant drunks the other night, and although they hadn't been much of a challenge, he wasn't betting on them being as easy to beat while sober. Then there were the physically-mutated. Maybe they were the Monsters for looking abnormal. He wasn't entirely sure.
"Nah, in Seattle you don't get much of the New York news. Besides, I'm not much of a T.V. person." he paused for a second. "What was the Christmas Special?" he asked, actually interested in where the conversation was going. Fights and stuff like that was right now his alley, so there was no doubt about it he would be having a bit of fun if ever something big happened... Well, if he managed to get there without being lectured by the staff for leaving the Grounds. Yep, his parents ruined everything.
So, this kid had never gone to school? This intrigued him a little. Whether it was because he'd been living on the streets his entire life or because he'd been home-schooled, he wasn't going to ask. He felt as if it wasn't really his business. He didn't want people to know much about his past, he wouldn't ask about others'. "Rules were meant to break though." he smirked.
>>"Nah, in Seattle you don't get much of the New York news. Besides, I'm not much of a T.V. person. What was the Christmas Special?"
Gawain grinned. "Chtulhu."
And just to make sure Speedy didn't think he was using some unknown swearword, he elaborated.
"A huge ass clay monster in the form of an elder god summoned by some mutant kids. Since the grown-ups were all in Romania, we went out with a few students to take it down. We pretty much got our asses handed to us in various manners, but we won..." he chuckled "It was the scariest Christmas I've ever had."
>>"Rules were meant to break though."
"Oh no, not there rules." Gawain grinned "Ya can read the real ones anythime. Nah, the ones ya need to learn are the ones you learn after you break the real ones."
Sitting up, Gawain pulled a serious face.
"All right, here's the Reader's Digest version: Number one: The people not to be messed with. This includes the Capt'n, his name's Sam but he usually goes by Cold Steel. You'll know him when you see him, he's got an eyepatch and he'll freeze your behind off if ya're outta line." he grinned with a certain pride in his voice "Also includes Doc, he's the healer of this fine establishment, if ya don' wanna end up with your elbow healed to your ankle better not talk back to him."
Pause.
"Number two: Be careful with animals. There's a bunch of shifters in the school, an' they turn into all kinds of things. Most of them are the same guy, Calley." grin "You'll get to know him too."
"Number three: Some girls here are off limits. For one reason or another. Anyone who's called Lupin will break your arm if ya're not careful; fair warning. An' if ya hit on Twyla or Maya, I'll break your arm." he nodded to make sure he understood "Also, if ya see a Japanese chick in fancy clothing: he's a guy. Just so you know."
"Number four: Danger Room. Coolest place ever, but you don' wanna go in there alone. Trust me."
Gawain took a breath, trying to come up with any other essential rules. He could find none, for the time being. So he grinned again.
"If ya manage to keep all these, I'll show you where they keep the booze."
"A huge ass clay monster in the form of an elder god summoned by some mutant kids. Since the grown-ups were all in Romania, we went out with a few students to take it down. We pretty much got our asses handed to us in various manners, but we won..."
Well, now that sounded far more epic than Sawyer's encounter with the six drunks last night. He suddenly felt as if, if Gawain was being truthful, he would most likely have quite a lot to look forward to. Well, unless his parents had forbidden the staff of the school to allow him to do any of the fun stuff. Oh well, Sawyer would figure something out. Perhaps he could get the staff on his side if he behaved himself for a few weeks... Try to show he was a good kid, and then get into all of the good action and do all of the stuff he was used to do in Seattle.
"That does sound pretty freaking awesome." he chuckled. It would probably have beaten any of his own Christmases if he would have been there too. Honestly, now that he mused the idea over, he was sure Gawain wasn't lying. Okay, perhaps exaggerating a little bit, but not lying. Living the life of a Mutant could be pretty unbelievable. He hadn't done much, and even then he'd done things kids his age had never dreamed of doing.
Example? Run the length of a room in less than a second, run around Seattle every single day, doing things that were...illegal, and never once being caught... Yeah, his life had been pretty fun until now, and perhaps if everything went according to plan and the staff managed to forget about his asshole parents, he'd be able to have more fun and be part of something pretty epic.
Sawyer laughed, mirroring the Mirrorwalker's movement and sitting up also. He actually listened to what he had to say, an amused look on his usually expressionless features. Cold Steel, or Sam, couldn't be messed with. Check. That was probably the music teacher, Sawyer figured. No talking back to this Doc person, a healer apparently. Check. He continued to listen throughout the little verbal handbook. Calley, an animal shifter. The Lupins were off limits, Twyla and Maya... Wait, Maya? He didn't quite catch the rest of the rules. Maya... He knew her.
He did hear booze however, which made him grin. Maybe this wasn't as hopeless after all, even if he was stuck inside the walls of the school for a while. "Maya. Is she your sister or something?" The childhood memories seemed to suddenly pour on him. He'd been no older than six years old... He had met this little girl (Well, she'd been older than him at the time) and for the entire summer they'd spent hours on end playing together. She had mentioned a brother once or twice too, but he had never been around.
