The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.

The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Whacking at Things Makes Everything Better (Hunte)
Kai was equal parts nervous and excited. Perhaps with a teaspoon of anxious and butterflies added to the mixture. Friday had come in due time. Fast enough but not too quickly.
He arrived at Spiritual Balance, staff in hand. The smooth, weather worn wood was comforting in his hands. They probably wouldn’t get to start with weapons today, but it was a special staff. It had come with him all the way from Illinois and had a lot of history…
He snapped out of his daydreaming and gave his name at the front. “Hi Ellie,” he refreshed his memory with the name plate that was perched on her desk. “I’m here for the martial arts training… The name’s Kai.”
Ellie looked up from what she was working on and offered Kai a smile. “Hello Kai,” she said warmly, “I love what you did with the garden. Mr Antonescu is waiting for you in the training area, just go right through.”
Hunter was running through a quick session of tai chi before Kai arrived. It was something he liked to do before training sessions. Relaxing himself and putting him in the right frame of mind. He finished up just before Kai entered. Turning to face the boy he smiled and raised a questioning eyebrow at the staff.
Kai followed her pointing to the training area. Hunter had just finished up an exercise when he peeked through the door. “Hey… Ready?” he asked, even though Hunter probably should have been the one to ask that question.
He leaned his staff against the wall, ready if needed. “So… how do we start?”
“Well you brought a staff,” Hunter replied going over to one of the cabinets in the wall. Opening it he pulled out a simple staff. It’s wasn’t a flexible bo staff that was use in the Far East but instead a more sturdy quarterstaff. This particular one was an old oak one about seven feet in length that Hunter had taken care to preserve. The majority of his old weapons were probably still at Mondragon Labs but a few were scattered around the world.
“So let’s see what you’ve got. A little sparring match should serve as a nice warm up and give me a measure of your skills,” Hunter suggested as he took a ready stance. His right hand was at the centre of the staff and the left about a quarter of the length lower. He thought back to when he learned the old English art from a Master of Defence. Henry Smith had been a pupil of the famous George Silver who was an old man by the time Hunter reached England. He’d been taught well and in his current frame of mind it was one of his preferred styles as it was significantly less lethal than using a sword.
Kai mentally prepared himself, also trying to reign in his powers so they didn’t get away from him if he got wrapped up in the mock-fight. He also wanted to protect his baby vine on his wrist, so he brushed it back flat and wrapped it around his wrist at the skinniest part. His normal method of protection- wearing gardener’s gloves, wouldn’t work in this case. He was pleased that it reached all the way around now.
Ready now, he grabbed his staff up again and twirled it expertly. At the least, he was certainly an expert at twirling. “Alright!” he assumed a ‘ready pose’, weight distributed and light on his feet. “Let’s go.”
Flashing a smile Hunter hopped forward and took the initiative. He swung a blow aimed high on Kai’s left. It was intended to connect with his forehead with enough force to sting something fierce, but nothing more than that. He didn’t commit all out to the attack however and was prepared to defend against any counter attack.
While Kai spun the staff with ease it had little reflection on his skill with it as a weapon. Hunter had come to learn that flashy moves often sacrificed effectiveness for style. Broomstick battles in the backyard were often more stylistic than effective. The spinning of the staff gave Hunter reason to believe that Kai had most of his staff fighting experience broomstick battles. It didn’t bode well for him in a fight against someone who knew the fighting styles of the masters of defence.
His opponent started in, aiming high. Kai stumbled a little bit in getting his block up, as he had a weak grip from spinning the staff. He barely managed to raise the wood up. Most of the contact was taken on the staff, but the top of his head also felt a little tap.
Kai immediately shifted, repositioned his hands, and moved smoothly from defense to offense. He might have stumbled a little at first, but his brother had been a tricky one and when they battled, he always attacked non-stop. Kai had learned early that he couldn’t hope to win by reacting to attacks as they came. He needed to force his opponent to make a mistake. He aimed at Hunter’s side and let it swing!
A light tap as Kai struggled to pull it together. His counter attack wasn’t too surprising. Hunter calmly slid his staff so now his left hand was at the centre and right hand a quarter above and blocked. Now Kai had moved his staff to attack Hunter repeated his last attack. Often in fights people expected a flurry of varied attacks. In truth if throwing the same one over and over works there is no reason to not keep doing it.
However once the opponent has found a way to deal with the attack then you had to adapt. For now he intended to just bop Kai on the head repeatedly until he dealt with it. Once he did Hunter would pick another target and repeat. Soon enough Kai would learn that you couldn’t just fend off an attack once but you had to secure yourself against repeated attacks.
Kai had to hand it to him (but not on a silver platter), Hunter kept his cool in a fight and was methodical. He had easily countered Kai’s attack and proceeded to do the same thing. That was something that he had never really experienced or expected. Cam was so random and… well, flailing. But at least that had taught him how to block.
Once more he managed to get his stick up into position, just in time not to get a concussion, but not to save himself completely. Hm… he must be holding back some of his strength for this practice. Which is good, otherwise I’d have a concussion by now.
And with that Kai shifted strategies. He needed to feel out his opponent more, see what he could and would do. It wasn’t enough to think of him as his brother and try to be ready to block any wild strike. He needed to study his unique movements and act with precision to protect himself. So Kai waited to see what Hunter would do, even though everything in him argued against that plan.
Another tap. But Kai seemed to be learning and rather than counter attack immediately he waited for Hunter although his body language said he’d rather be attacking. It was good that he was showing restraint and trying to figure out how Hunter fought.
Hunter shifted his grip back to his original with as much fluidity as before and swung for the head again. However this time as Kai came up to block he would switch and swing the staff down under his guard and give him a solid whack to the ribs. Not with enough force to give him anything more than a mild bruise but it would still sting a lot.
He went for the head again. Why? Repeating the same move three times in a row was almost unheard of. It was so expected and old that it was unexpected. Fortunately, Kai didn’t let his brain interfere with his actions too much. He automatically blocked the head shot and leaned back (mentally), satisfied with himself, until…
Oof!
He took one in the ribs, having become way too cocky. Though he wasn’t sure how that had happened when he had taken a hit from each and every one of the exchanges so far. Kai grabbed his side with his free hand and swept his staff in front of him to ward off any other follow up attacks while he waited for the stinging to go away. Hmm… maybe Hunter’s got a few tricks up his sleeve, too.
Kai had fallen for it. He’d come to assume that Hunter would just keep swinging at the same spot and so kept using a guard that worked. And so Hunter had opened an attack the same as every other time, and then varied it at the end to hit him in the ribs. Kai actually dropped a hand off the staff and held his ribs while swinging wildly. Big mistake.
Hunter stepped in and holding his staff one handed used it to intercept the wild swing. Had it been a two handed strike he would have needed both of his to block but as it was he could block with just one. His free left hand came up and around as he aimed a hard flick at Kai’s right temple. Again if it connected it would sting but no real damage would be done.
“Unless you need to hold a wound closed don’t put your hand to it,” he instructed, “It leaves you at a disadvantage that a canny opponent will exploit.” Such as myself he added in his head. Better the boy learnt here rather than out there where he could well receive more than a flick.
The stinging sensation in his side was fading as quickly as it appeared. Good news for Kai: Hunter wasn’t hitting excessively hard. Bad news: He was still attacking after dodging Kai’s sweep, aiming for the head again, but this time it would be his face on the line if he didn’t stop the strike. By sheer accident, Kai managed to block the intended strike and breathed a small sigh of relief. Or a manly exhale because of the exertion of force.
He nodded, accepting Hunter’s advice about his hands, no so much because he believed everything Hunter said, but because the potential openings and ouches were clearly demonstrable. Kai steadied himself and vowed that he had taken his last hit.
Kai managed to bat his hand aside more by luck than judgment. He did however seem to take Hunter’s words on board as he gripped his staff properly again and took a proper defensive stance. Unsurprisingly he was getting tired of Hunter’s stinging blow.
Having had the initiative for the whole fight so far Hunter decided to give the boy a chance to seize it. Stepping forward he went to tap his staff against the top of Kai’s. It wasn’t an attack but the movement would weaken his defence and he wanted to give Kai a chance to try and press home an offense for a while.
He saw an opening after Hunter threw up a soft attack. He took it, shifting his weight forward slightly to add some speed to his attack. Kai aimed at Hunter’s leg, knee high. It was a calculated move, not one inspired by feelings of revenge. He was going for precision here, without sacrificing the ability to come back to a block if necessary. He was ready in case this was another trick.
His staff whooshed through the air, a blur with speed. At the last second he made sure to pull back some of the force. Just because Hunter had some weird super strength didn’t mean that he was invulnerable to being hurt. And this was just a friendly match after all, even though his ribs didn’t agree.
