The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. Hunter had managed to take Meld down but even as she fell she brought her tail around from another strike. This was aimed right at his chest. Hunter started rolling away and lashed out with a hand to knock the tail off course. The end result was it clipped him in the shoulder. It stung like hell but he’d had worse. Rolling away Hunter got to his feet and began to circle.
Meld’s biggest edge was her natural weaponry, especially her tail. Grappling favoured her as she had an additional limp over him. So he’d have to keep this fight at a distance, darting in and out to land blows while avoiding the various metal weapons. To help in this regard he was deliberately circling to his right, as this would bring him round onto Meld’s more exposed left side.

Meld knew that her greatest weakness as a combatant was the fact that her lack of pain meant that she was sometimes reckless. She would take little risks, deal with the minor bruises and cuts that came with them, in order to inflict damage. She had all ready fallen twice, semi-willingly, to give her to opportunity to attack and eventually those bruises would start to add up. She might not feel pain, but when damage was done her body eventually started to fail. Thankfully, her most recent gamble succeeded, even if not fully, and Hunter got a tail to the shoulder.
Meld jumped back to her feet, allowing Hunter to control the pace of the fight, for the time being. She could feel herself just starting to breath a little heavier from the exertions of the battle so far. It was time to conserve her energy, waiting for the best opportunity to do some real damage. While she waited she would play it defensively, dodging and blocking as the situation merited.
While Hunter was starting to feel the exertion of combat he wasn’t breathing as hard as Meld. There wasn’t a lot in it, but this let Hunter know he could out last her if it came to that. Not by a lot, but by enough to count.
With that in mind he decided to keep the pressure up. Darting in closer he snapped a punch with his left hand square at her face. He was hoping to draw her shield up to block and would follow through to connect with it so long as he didn’t hit the blades. The left was quickly followed by a right that was aimed at where he’d landed his kick. Finally he would bring his left knee up to try and catch her in the stomach.
As he moved in he kept an eye out for her tail, ready to pull back if h needed to. This was a hit and run attack. He had no intention of standing and trading blows or getting in a grappling contest with her.

The fact that Hunter did not appear to be breathing as heavily as Meld was let her know that she was not likely to win a battle of endurance. Maybe it was her heavier metal limbs taking their tole on her or maybe he was just a shade more in shape than she was, but the fact remained that it could pose a problem. It wasn't a problem yet, however. She still had plenty of time before she would really begin feeling to tole of the fight.
Meld blocked the hit to her face, bringing her shield up to intercept it and going on step further by continuing the movement of the shield forward in an attempt to break the knuckles in his hand. The left she managed to dodge by sidestepping and it whistled past her, causing her clothing to rustle. The kick, however, hit and it was the first real damage done in the fight. She felt the wind knocked out of her and cringed backwards. Her shield she moved in front of her stomach and her tail lashed out , trying to strike at the outstretched appendage.
Hunter spotted the continuing movement of the shield fractionally too late. He couldn’t sufficiently pull his blow to avoid hurting his hand, but he did manage to not break his knuckles. It was the same hand he’d punched Maya’s door with yesterday. That really hurt and he was going to need to ice it when they were done, but it would hold up for now.
His other punch missed but his knee hit home. Meld almost doubled over and dropped her shield to cover her stomach. As she did the tail came whistling over the top. Hunter hopped back, but once again not fast enough to completely avoid the tail. Even with the cloth the tail tore a gash down his left shin. Painful yes, serious no. Hunter had endured worse and wouldn’t let this stop him.
Unwilling to let up his advantage now that he’d landed a solid blow. As Meld retracted her tail Hunter followed it back in, ready to dodge the inevitable next attack. However he hoped to get close enough to land another blow. He was aiming for a punch to her left arm with his right hand. To try and temporarily take the arm out of the fight and level the number of limbs they each had he extended the knuckle of his middle finger and was aiming for a more focused strike between the bicep and tricep.

Shield struck fist with rather satisfying impact and Meld could see the flinch. She wasn't certain how much damage she had done, but every little bit counted. When up against a skilled opponent, which Hunter most certainly was, it was a matter of many little blows and impacts adding up rather than a single major strike as it often was with a lesser opponent. Aura had often described combat as a dance and Meld couldn't' help but agree. She and hunter were making beautiful art in their illusion of deadly combat.
Meld's tail also hit home and she could see a trickle of blood run down her opponent's shin. The sight of blood sent a thrill of adrenaline through her, bringing on an echo of the feelings that often drove her to kill. It was a beautiful living sight, something that she had helped create and bring to life. The more pure joy of simply enjoying the challenge, however, one through and she was able to suppress the urge to take things to the next and more dangerous level. And even if she hadn't it wasn't like she was likely to get the opportunity to stop and remove the cloth from her blades.
Spurred on by the sight of her opponent's blood, Meld reacted with a touch more recklessness than usual. Her shield remained at her vulnerable stomach and she lifted her leg to attempt to kick Hunter's shin and hopefully disable a leg. She turned her body with the movement, not noticing Hunter's fist coming towards her vulnerable left arm. Nor did she notice when it connected with her arm, knuckles running across it due to the motion of her body and causing skin to break. The cut itself wasn't bad but, not even noticing its existence, she wouldn't know how much damage was actually done to the limb until she next tried to use it.
His punch landed a solid blow. Solid enough to draw blood. Hunter had been bracing himself for this eventuality from the start of the fight and as such managed to suppress his urges. Besides he had bigger concerns. Meld was lashing out with a kick at his bleeding leg looking to incapacitate it. Conventional dodging or blocking wouldn’t help so Hunter switched styles.
It had been some time since he’d done Capoeira but he still knew the moves. To avoid the kick Hunter cartwheeled round to Meld’s left. Her kick didn’t miss altogether, but the force was greately reduced. He’d have to be careful now as too many more hits to his left shin and he could be in trouble.
However Hunter still kept pressing the attack. He didn’t complete the cartwheel and land on his feet. Instead he held the hand stand position and kicked out at her head. He hoped that his sudden change of style would throw Meld off and allow him to score another hit.

Meld had never seen anything resembling Capoeira before. In her past, formal competition meant sticking to rather defined techniques and rules and when she had finished with her years of competition, few of her opponents were formally trained in any significant way. As such, both the dodge and the counterattack were entirely unexpected.
It was only during her own counterattack that Meld realized that some significant damage had been done to her right arm. She tried to grab at one of Hunter's legs with it only to realize that it had almost no strength in it at all. Out of necessity she changed techniques. The arm had to be protected so she moved her shield from her stomach, which she knew had also taken some damage but less so than her arm, in front of her injured arm. It put her at a definite disadvantage.
Meld took a step back, attempting to put some distance between herself and her opponent. Although unfamiliar with the technique used, she was nothing if not innovative. Logic dictated that he shouldn't be able to move as quickly from his hands as he could from his feet and she tried to wrap her tail around one of the upturned appendages. If successful she would have some limited control of his body and be able to either throw him or at least cause him to lose his balance and fall.
It looked like his blow had at least partially worked as Meld had lost most of the use of her left arm. As he saw her tail snake out Hunter decided to take a risk. Rather than dodge the attack he let her wrap her tail around his leg. However the moment she had done so he sprung up off his hands towards her.
With one hand he tried to grab her tail and with the other her shield. He was careful to aim his grab between the blades. With any luck having to suddenly support all of Hunter’s weight, some two hundred and fifty pounds, on her tail would pull her forward off balance. If this worked he would try to follow through and use her momentum to throw he across the room.
This was a risky move as he wasn’t certain whether she’d stumble off balance or not. However with one arm disabled he was more confident about grappling Meld now she no longer had an additional limb over him.

A moment of elation ran through Meld as she realized that Hunter hadn't managed to dodge her tail and she actually wrapped it firmly around his ankle. This was proving to be a fight full of surprises, however, and once again Hunter did the unexpected, grabbing onto the shaft of the tail with one hand and her shield with the other hand.
Meld stumbled with the sudden weight of her opponent on her tail but managed to keep her feet. She attempted to dislodge him by whipping it violently around. Hopefully the momentum would cause him to lose his grip and, best case scenario, fly into a nearby wall.
So much for throwing Meld. Hunter had underestimated her balance and strength and she’d remained on her feet. Now she was trying to throw him across the room. Rather than resist he let her throw him and worked with the movement to ensure that he went against the wall front first. His hands and feet hit the wall first and he used his arms and legs as shock absorbers. Just as his nose was kissing the wall he pushed back off it and span round. He landed facing Meld again.
The moment his feet touched the floor he rushed back in again. He needed to keep the pressure on and not give her a moment’s respite. As he reached striking range he kept an eye on her tail and shield before fainting right as if to go for her injured arm. Then he’d dart left and try to land a blow to the ribs on her right side. The fact that the knuckles were injured coupled with the fact he didn’t want to actually break her ribs meant that instead of a punch Hunter was going for a palm strike.

Meld managed to get Hunter off of her tail and succeeded in throwing him part way across the room, causing him to collide with the wall. However, he managed to use the momentum of the throw to his own advantage, catching himself on the wall and spinning off so that he ended up facing her once again.
By this point Meld was beginning to breathe quite heavily. The exertion of the fight was definitely getting to her, especially when combined with the blows she had all ready taken and the fact that it had been so long since she'd had a proper session such as this. A normal fight usually ended much sooner and usually in the death of whoever her opponent happened to be.
Almost before Meld had a chance to react, Hunter was back on the offensive once again. As he came within range, she once again struck out with her tail. She noticed the blow directed at her injured arm and moved her shield to intercept opening up her vulnerable ribs. Once again a blow was landed, causing her breath to rush from her lungs. Once again she threw a kick, aiming at his injured shin.
Ducking round the tail, tough it did graze his neck, Hunter’s plan worked as Meld fell for the faint and he landed a solid blow to her ribs. A quick assessment of things let him see she was in a bad way. Breathing heavily, one arm crippled and having sustained two big body blows Meld wouldn’t last much longer. By comparison he’d taken glancing blows to his shoulder and neck, moderate injury to his left shin and the only serious damage was to his left knuckles. He also wasn’t breathing nearly as hard as Meld was. However Meld wasn’t quite aware of the damage she’d sustained. Time to call this off.
But first he had to avoid the counter attack. She was going for his left shin again, a sensible choice all things considered. Dropping to his knees Hunter blocked with both arms and called “Stop!”. Where he in an actual fight this would have been a foolish move as it left him at Meld’s mercy. However this was the safest way to end their sparring match.
“You’re good,” he said as he got back to his feet, “Very good. You know what you’re doing with your melds, especially that tail of yours. But a couple more hits like that and I’m going to start breaking things you value, like your ribs for example. Come and sit down over here and I’ll check that I’ve not done any permanent damage.”

When 'stop' was yelled it took Meld a few seconds for the meaning of the word to penetrate her focus. She continued moving, going fluidly from one move to the next, preparing her next attack. Part way through the motion, the meaning finally registered that it was a command to end the competition. She managed to stop herself before any dishonorable damage was done and bowed in respect to her opponent.
Meld looked down at her arm and her ribs, trying to assess the extent of the damage. She grimaced at what she saw, dark purple bruises and a small trickle of blood, still flowing due to the exertions of the fight. She could still breathe, aside from being somewhat out of breath, so was pretty sure her ribs weren't broken. Her arm, on the other hand, might be a different matter as it could barely be moved and appeared to be swelling.
"Its been a long time since someone's beaten me," Meld said, with obvious respect. She sat beside Hunter and began carefully unwrapping the cloth from her blades. It made her uncomfortable to have them covered. Once unwrapped she sat and allowed Hunter to proceed with his examination of her injuries. "Its an advantage and a disadvantage, not being able to feel pain. Sometimes I don't realize when I've been hurt."
Meld didn’t stop right away. The shield was sailing at his face and all Hunter could do was raise his arms and brace for impact. Fortunately it never came as she stopped just in time. “I can imagine,” he said as the moved over to the bench, “I doubt many people would correctly factor in your tail. I made a few mistakes with it and have the scratches and bruises to show for it.”
With Meld now sitting down Hunter started to examine her. While he ribs didn’t look broken, they were probably badly bruised. Normally it would hurt for like hell but that wouldn’t be a problem for Meld. She’s wasn’t suffering breathing difficulties fortunately so it should be a simple process of letting it heal. “You’ve got bruised ribs on your right side,” he explained, “Not too bad but they’ll need time to heal. Avoid hits to them for about a month or so and you should be fine.”
Next he moved round to her right arm. He’d landed a solid focused strike their and temporarily disabled her arm. After a quick check to confirm that he hadn’t broken anything he began to massage her upper arm to help bring the feeling back. While Meld had no sense of touch or pain she should feel when the strength returned to her arm. “No permanent damage here either.”
He was acutely aware of the blood trickling down her arm but kept his instincts in check. Privately he was glad that with sufficient preparation he could resist. It was when he was unexpectedly confronted with blood that things became complicated.
