He reads as incredibly earnest and as such is a surprisingly convincing liar. Nolan has an inherent talent for fixing physical problems (ie: a leaky pipe) He also loves free running, bodyweight fitness, and gymnastics Job or part time job and description: none currently Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Mental health; his power makes it difficult to discern what he, personally, believes. He fears that he will be found out to be a fraud and he is afraid of touching others for too long. Special talents: Because of Nolan's abilities and perceptions, he is generally able to get the measure of a person (in his opinion at least) in a very short period of time. His intuition is good.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Rather neutral. Nolan can easily be swayed with words (literally) so long as they register to him as true. He is charismatic and suave and will talk you right out of your worldly possessions, but he does have a limit to what he is willing to do.
Mutations
Mutation description: Sensory Based Memory Manipulation
Nolan has the ability to affect and be affected by memory through memory absorption and memory implantation.
Memory Absorption: Nolan can create an intentional, direct connection to another mind in order to experience another person’s memories. He creates this connection by touch. He must focus on a time range or a topic and his mind will delve into those memories only. He can maintain a direct mental connection for only as long as he remains in direct skin-to-skin contact. When experiencing a memory, he sees the memory as the person remembers it, from their point of view.
Memory Implantation: Through the power of his voice, Nolan may choose to plant memories into another’s mind. Much as he see memories, he is able to pass any absorbed memory on to another, by talking about it. Nolan must be able to speak (or sing) and be heard in order to implant a memory. He can choose to implant a memory unrelated to what he is talking about, but a character will experience the memory as soon as something brings it to mind, just as normal remembering happens. It will feel as if it happened to them. The memory is transmitted instantly.
Strengths: Memory Absorption: Nolan can absorb years worth of memory in an instant which allows him to learn skills and take in memories from outside sources. Once Nolan has absorbed a memory, he can revisit it at any speed, delving specifically or absorbing an overview. Nolan can touch an object to form a connection to the person who has used the item last (skin cells must be left behind) so long as they are still alive. If the person is not present he can only glean limited memories associated with the direct use of the object. If the person is present, he can form a direct mental connection with them from touching something they have handled.
Nolan is immune to his own abilities. He cannot learn a memory he left behind on the coffee pot. That also means he won't have to constantly relive every sip of coffee.
Memory Implantation: Nolan can share a memory of forming bonds, training, skills, or languages. He can share anything that he can remember. He can implant memories to any and all who can hear him directly.
Weaknesses and Limitations: Memory Absorption: Nolan must absorb memories by topic or by time frame. Time frame memories are more comprehensive, but take up more of her memory space with “unnecessary” time. Topical memories are sometimes incomplete since the lessons we learn are not always directly associated by topic. Absorbed skills can be attempted immediately, but it’s like imitating something you’ve read about extensively or seen on television: until he practices herself it is an imitation. He will lose any skills that he does not practice, just as anyone else might.
The human brain has an active capacity of about ten years worth of clear recollection which means that memories he absorbs may overwrite some of what he knows if he takes in too much. He is not able to decide what is overwritten since his mind is wholly focused on absorbing a memory rather than preserving an old one.
Nolan cannot read minds. He can only access long-term storage memories. A person must have slept on an experience for it to translate into the type of memory that Nolan can access.
His power makes it difficult to discern what he, personally, believes. With every memory Nolan absorbs, he must lose an equivalent memory of his own. Anything Nolan learns is vulnerable to be overwritten.
Nolan cannot form a mental connection to dead people.
Memory Implantation: Because the human brain has an active capacity of about ten years, any memories that Nolan passes on have the potential to overwrite memories that others have. OOC, a player will decide if/when this happens, but the most common scenario is that an implanted memory will overwrite it’s closest memory in order to prevent duplication of memories.
Not all memories preserve perfectly and any gifted memory is subject to decay. That means that if Nolan passes on a skill, just as when Nolan absorbs a skill, a character can attempt a skill immediately, but it’s purely imitation until they master the skill themselves. Implanted skills will decay at a faster rate than other memories if they are not maintained.
Nolan must be able to use his voice and be heard in order to implant a memory. Recordings or any transmission/distortion of his voice (over the phone or even through a megaphone) will negate Nolan’s ability to implant memories. Hearing any kind of vocalization from Nolan will allow a transfer of memory, but if he cannot be heard clearly (in a crowd, for example) the memories may be fragmented.
Anyone whose memories were overwritten can be triggered to remember what was forgotten up until they sleep on the new memories, but they must follow the “only 10 years worth of good recollection” rule which means they may be sacrificing some other memory in the process.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Having trained (and having athletic hobbies), Nolan is as strong as a typical athletic human man. He will not be setting any Olympic records. He is particularly fast with reflexes that are in line with someone used to training, sparring, and fighting for his life. Fighting Style: Government issue training paired with a love of free running Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Firearms training, hand-to-hand CQB experience, and a jove of jumping onto and off of things create a perfect storm of odd ball unexpected movements and repercussions, but since dead people can’t give up their memories Nolan is less likely to kill you than someone else might.
History Of Your Character Nolan’s power developed at the age of 12. He was thought to be a classic psychometric, touching people or items and then being able to pull memories from those things. At 15, he was tapped as an on-call specialist to help police investigate and resolve cases. It wasn’t until after he’d filled his head with crimes, that the forgetting started and Nolan realized it might be something more.
At age 18, Nolan decided to pack up and move across the country to New York in order to avoid revealing to his family just how fractured his memories had become. He tried to take up a position with the police, but without years of trust between them he wasn’t able to persuade anyone of his reliability. Instead, he found work in sales by day and fulfilled his desire to make the world a better place by night. He quickly fell in with the X-men. (late 2002ish)
In 2009, age 25, everything changed. In an X-mission gone wrong, Nolan experienced an unexpected power growth that led to him accidentally giving away the secret location of the X-men hideout. Nolan was taken into SUPER custody and the X-base was destroyed. For any X-men that knew him, Nolan was assumed dead.
Guilt-ridden, Nolan found his purpose in dedicating himself to SUPER. Though he did not at first agree with their ideals, he excelled at training and debriefing. Eventually, he came around to the SUPER way of thinking. He functions as a fixture at one of the SUPER training locations and rarely can be seen on active Agent missions.
