The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"I'm seventeen." she answered, and it was true. Give or take a couple of weeks, doesn't really matter.
Someone on the other side of the door insisted that Maya go out and show herself. Mirror chuckled. Even after settling on codenames and whatnot, it still sounded funny. >>"You think?"
"I think go and fight for what's yours, Cinderella" Maya grinned at Ghost "I'll be right here if ya need backup."
She meant it too. Apparently, there were women out there whose brains were shut down permanently by a tricky little device called an engagement ring. Blah.
>>"Well, you've helped me with my fashion needs. I would love to return the favor some day."
Maya chuckled and waved her hand. "Yeah, sure, one day I'll ask a Favor of ya." thinking for a moment, she added "How about ya tell me more about that school of yours later on?..."
Seventeen. So still in school. Ghost-Maya smiled a bitter smile. At seventeen she still had a mother. There was only a three or three and a half year difference between Other Maya and Ghost-Maya and it somehow felt like a very large space of time.
"I think go and fight for what's yours, Cinderella. I'll be right here if ya need backup."
Cinderella wasn't a bad princess to be called so she took it like the compliment it was.
"I'll tell you anything I can about the school." And with that and one last hike of the skirts it was off to the battle field.
Madam customer service had stepped up security as per her scout's honor. Her sleeves were rolled up and two women wearing aprons littered with straight pins were standing at the ready. Maya felt like the room stopped and took a breath.
Yeah. This was probably the right dress then.
She ducked to hide her smile and stood in front of the mirrors as per instructed. Her shopping assistant, madam customer service, was already bustling back with veil options.
Long veil? Princess Di as long as a cathedral veil? Short and spunky veil? Veil that was for decoration only and wouldn't come in front of the face? This was a circle of hell created to torture those who didn't particularly care about veils. A white one would do.
Ghost picked a medium one with minimal embellishments. She liked the dress. There was no reason to muck it up with a veil.
One of the aproned ladies had come over to chat about hemming the dress. Another apathetic point for Ghost. Yes she wanted a bustle so that she could dance. No, she wouldn't be wearing heels so it would need to be hemmed. They tuck a few pins here and there. Hmmed and ohhed and then it was time for the next quandary.
Jewelry? Really? She had to pick that stuff too? Ghost asked if she could pay by credit instead of picking out earrings. She didn't even have her ears pierced. She marched over to the payment desk still in the dress just to be sure someone wouldn't grab it off her hangar. She was feeling distrustful of these wedding shoppers.
In the end, no one took a flying tackle at her. Ghost was mildly disappointed.
And then it was time to take off the dress and leave it with the nice ladies to be fixed up and ready for her fitting next week. Ghost knocked on her own dressing room door before entering. "Still here? Maya?" Yeah. It was weird to meet someone with her name. Like a small bit of her individuality was somehow sapped away.
"I hope I didn't take too long. Did you want to go somewhere? The only thing left on my list is shoes, but if you're hungry we can stop somewhere, my treat." Since she had actually found a dress, and the other girl looked to be one step above homeless, she offered. Ghost liked to spend her money on other people.
Maya got out of the mirror and sat down cross-legged on the floor of the dressing room, waiting for Ghost to return. What on Earth took so long about putting on a wedding gown? Maya made a mental note that if push ever came to shove, she would just kidnap her beloved and figure out the rest from there.
>>"Still here? Maya?... I hope I didn't take too long. Did you want to go somewhere? The only thing left on my list is shoes, but if you're hungry we can stop somewhere, my treat."
Maya realized she was hungry. She'd eaten a sandwich earlier, and some... stuff before that, but to tell the truth, her usual diet was neither regular nor healthy. She pretty much ate wherever and whatever she could.
"Yeah, sure. Free food is good." she grinned up at Ghost from the floor "And I can help you beat back the psycho attacks at the shoe store, hm?"
"Yeah. Rub it in for the girl who offered to pay, whydon'cha. Hey, if I'm paying does that mean I get to pick?" She was teasing really. Most of her meals were eaten out these days so it might be a relief for someone else to pick. Ghost was doing her little shimmy dance in reverse now to escape the delicate trappings of lace.
"What kind of things do you like to eat? I've been trying to go vegetarian lately since my husband can't eat meat so that's my only request."
Again, she tried to be as modest as possible when changing. In the end she made it back into her street clothes and even back into her shoes. Silly shoes. Why must they be worn?
In the end, Ghost-Maya ended up offering a hand to Other-Maya before opening the door and carrying the dress out.
A quick swipe of the credit card and they were free of the boutique. If Other-Maya didn't have a preference, Ghost-Maya would just pick something at random out on the street. She didn't even know where to start looking for shoes. Couldn't she just go without?
Maya took Ghost's hand and stood, flinging her backpack on her shoulder.
"Well, I'm not picky, ya can feed me whatever ya want, really." following her out of the shop, she added "Vegetarian's fine too."
She was telling the truth. She was never picky about free food. Or any food, for that matter. She had some change jingling in her various pockets, but even if Ghost wasn't as kind and interesting as she was, she still couldn't have afforded to pass up a good meal. Walking down the street with Ghost, she couldn't help but be reminded of her trip to the Chinese with Twyla. She smirked, and to take her mind off things like that, she turned to Ghost-Maya again.
Then Vegetarian it would be. What Ghost really wanted to know was if the other-Maya had a good place to stay and clothes and all of that. She wanted to know that the girl was taken care of. But she didn't want to assume. Just because other-Maya looked like she could use a good soak in a tub and some clothes that fit, didn't mean the girl was homeless.
"So, is your boy... um, husband a mutant too?"
She opened her mouth to answer. "You're not homeless are you?"
Ghost-Maya fwapped her hand into her forehead. So much for tact. "I didn't mean that. Man, I'm all over the place. That just came out. I'm sorry. I just... I know a lot of times people are trying to make it on their own." In fact, she'd tried to help mutants find a home with the Mansion or the Sanctuary before, usually with equally disastrous effects.
She motioned to the door of a strictly vegetarian place called Wild Ginger. "I've never been here, but I hear their peanutbutter dessert is good." She opened the door for other-Maya hoping she wasn't mad.
She cleared her throat shyly getting around to the actual question asked. "He's a healer. And he has a tail."
Maya blinked and stopped in her tracks. She saw the question coming, but... not like that. Apparently, Ghost was not planning on it either, it just kind of slipped out, and Maya couldn't really blame her. When the air elemental started to apologize, Maya grinned and started walking again.
"Nah, never mind, I guess that's what folks think when they see me." she shrugged one shoulder, pulling on her sweatshirt "Truth is... well. I do have a home, I'm just... traveling right now." with a sigh, she added "I'm looking for my mother. She went missing a... while ago."
What the heck. She never told about Mom before, and now within a couple of days she trusted her secret mission to Rupert, and now Other Maya. People were right. New York was different.
She didn't really want to go into details right now, and she was glad that they found a place to eat. Wild Ginger. Riiight. Other Maya finally remembered to answer her previous question about her husband, and that broke the silence.
>>"He's a healer. And he has a tail."
Maya couldn't help but grin.
"Sounds like quite the catch."
Looking around the place she had to admit two things: one, she was starving, and two, she never had imagined how many kinds of food people can make without meat. Most of them looked (and smelled) delicious too. Her stomach made a rumbling noise, and Maya grinned at Ghost.
Looking for her mother? Ghost-Maya had dismissed the girl's life as happy and carefree as a 17 year old's should be upon learning her age. Apparently no one came to New York without a few chips missing from their shoulders.
Upon sitting down and glancing at the menu, Ghost-Maya's taste buds started trying to crawl out of her nose and attack the next table over for their freshly delivered food.
"Oh, this is gonna cost ya a lot."
"That's fine. I work too much anyway. It's nice to be able to spend on things that matter." The trouble with working too much was that she almost never had time to spend the money she was making. Not that it mattered, she was piling up a nice retirement... or savings or something.
"I actually own a book store. Been hanging out there less and less with all the wedding stuff, though." She needed to go back to the Full Circle and reconnect soon. Who knows what they were doing in her absence.
"Heh. And it's actually nice to hang out with a girl for once. Most of my friends are boys so yay estrogen."
When the waiter came by, Ghost pointed to one of the entrees on the next table over. Judging from the way it smelled and the way the owner of that plate was devouring it faster than her compatriot, it looked like a winner. "I want what she's having and after ward your famous peanut butter dessert."
>>"Heh. And it's actually nice to hang out with a girl for once. Most of my friends are boys so yay estrogen."
Maya choked on nothing. Literally. After a brief coughing fit which colored her cheeks pink, she looked away, biting her lip. Yeah. As if there was anything in the world she hated more than estrogen. Well, to tell the truth, she didn't have anything against the poor hormone when it was in somebody else - sometimes it was responsible for some very nice things. But running on it every other day was more than she wanted to endure. Even after 16 years of being half girl, Maya still hoped that when the gender-shifting thing wore off, her body would settle for Gawain.
"Yeah. Girl power." she muttered, hiding behind the menu.
Not really paying any attention (and being so hungry she felt like chewing on the menu itself) she ordered a healthy deal of food, before feeling calm enough to face Ghost again. Folding her arms over her chest, she tilted her head.
"Bookstore, huh? That sounds cool. It belongs to that school of yours too?"
Other-Maya took Ghost-Maya's girl compliment rather strangely. Apparently Ghost-Maya was really out of practice when dealing with other women. Oh brother. She probably broke some girl code that she had no idea even existed.
"Did I say something?" Ghost stretched so her eyes peeked over the upper lip of other-Maya's menu. There was no hiding behind menus. That wasn't very fair.
"Bookstore, huh? That sounds cool. It belongs to that school of yours too?"
Ghost-Maya accepted the glass of water that was handed to her by the waiter. "No. I actually own the bookstore. Well, I suppose it's half Sebastian's now too, though. The two aren't really affiliated. Not directly anyway." Ghost sipped her water. It was not as satisfying as food would have been, but it was a start.
"The store has a strict non-violent policy which... sounds kind of strange for a place of business, but when you're slamming together a lot of mutants they always seem to want to try their abilities on each other. The mansion and the X-men... they try their hardest, but sometimes they take a more violent road than I would prefer." She shrugged. But what else were they supposed to do when an all-out attach was launched at the school over some doors?
Yeah, of course she noticed. Apparently Mirror-Maya was really out of practice when dealing with other women.
"Nah, it's not you. It's another... gift of mine." she frowned "Never mind."
Taking the glass of water from the waiter, she buried her nose in that for a change, listening to what Ghost told her about the bookstore and the school.
>>"The mansion and the X-men... they try their hardest, but sometimes they take a more violent road than I would prefer."
That earned a grin from Maya. She was not particularly violent in nature, but hearing something like that about a school definitely made the place more attractive to her. X-men in itself sounded like people running around in spandex, but as long as they did cool things, she could deal with any outfit. Almost. Suddenly, another thought occurred to her - it was so clear and simple she couldn't believe she hadn't thought of it before.
"Can I ask ya a question?... Do these X people happen to have equipment for locating mutants?..."
Please say yes, and I might just sign up for that school of yours...
"Nah, it's not you. It's another... gift of mine. Never mind."
Hmm. She said never mind. So Ghost really should never mind. But why would she want to hide her gifts? It wasn't like there was a registration anymore. "Well, gifts are meant to be shared, but if you haven't come to terms yet I won't bug you." Some people needed to get a handle on their gifts before they were properly able to share.
"Can I ask ya a question?... Do these X people happen to have equipment for locating mutants?..."
"Actually, yes. It's a device called Cerebra and she's pretty hard to get to. I think you're supposed to get permission from Sam to use it, though." Did Ghost look a little guilty about that? Nawww. It had all been in good poking fun when they nearly fried their brains while trying out the machine.
"You looking for ...?" Actually hadn't other-Maya said something about her mother?
"Your mom. You're looking for your mom, aren't you?" Was hugging appropriate now? 'Cause Ghost-Maya had just met other-Maya. And while, she might be willing to hug and comfort a younger sibling type or a long time friend, strangers didn't typically make that list no matter how helpful they had been.
>>"Actually, yes. It's a device called Cerebra and she's pretty hard to get to. I think you're supposed to get permission from Sam to use it, though."
She said yes. She said they had a way of locating mutants. Maya couldn't believe her ears. Can it really be this simple, after three years of searching through the States room by room?... Whoever that Sam was, Maya was pretty sure she could face him down. The rush of hope was so strong it took her a few seconds till the question reached her mind.
>>"Your mom. You're looking for your mom, aren't you?"
Keeping her cool proved to become easier every time the topic came up. Maya was no longer a whiny kid - she was almost seventeen, fully capable of taking care of herself. Ghost seemed to be a kind person, and somehow - Maya was not sure why - she was showing an almost big-sister-like interest in her she hadn't encountered before. This had thrown her off balance a bit, and she was not sure she could tell her about the 'gift' and Mother at once without choking on it, but... Practice makes perfect.
"Yeah. She's a shapeshifter... kinda hard to find." she nodded. Stick to the facts. "I am one too. I change..." here goes nothing "... gender once a day."
Folding her arms across her chest, she worked up the courage to look at Ghost again, and added a half-grin too.
"Yeah. She's a shapeshifter... kinda hard to find."
Ghost-Maya nodded seriously. Her own mother had been an elemental much in the same way she was an elemental. Sometimes genetics was funny like that. Powers running in families. And sometimes the powers were so totally unrelated that Ghost-Maya would never have guessed the mutants were related... let alone nuclear family like Deathstar and the Red Brothers, for example.
"I am one too. I change..." Deep breath. "... gender once a day."
Ghost-Maya's lips quirked in an instant smile. Wait. She thought she heard.... the smile wilted. What would it be like to change into a man? That would be awful! Her smile officially turned upside down. Other-Maya... had seen her in her underware. Ghost-Maya's cheeks started simmering.
"S-so... are you really a boy or really a-uhm... both?" How did one ask those questions without offending? Was Ghost-Maya obligated to pat her... it's... (no, no her was right.) hand? Ghost-Maya tried it. Just a little friendly pat or two to show her that she wasn't afraid of her gender-bending and that she felt for her lack of mother.
"Your turn."
"My turn at what?" Ghost-Maya thought back to what the other-Maya could possibly be meaning. Certainly it wasn't Ghost-Maya's turn to turn into a boy. That was just plain silly.
"You want to know about my mom? Or my power? Oooor the Mansion?" It could be all of the above, but the waiter arrived with a delicious smelling group of plates that hardly fit on their small two-person table. It was quite the distraction. Ghost-Maya's eyes bugged just a bit. She hadn't been intending to spend a week's wages on a shared meal, but... well, other-Maya was a guest. And she did turn into a boy. And boys ate a lot...
"Heh. Hungry?" Ghost-Maya just hoped they had enough doggy bags.
Maya watched Ghost's face change from cheerful to troubled, and frowned herself - yeah, this was the exact same reaction she'd been trying to avoid her entire life. Good job, Morris.
>>"S-so... are you really a boy or really a-uhm... both?"
And she patted her hand too. Yea, right. Pity me.
"I'm both a boy and a girl. Same person, different body. I don't have multiple personalities or anythin'." she explained. It was weird, explaining. She was not used to it. "... telling people I have a twin usually makes it a lot more easier."
>>"You want to know about my mom? Or my power? Oooor the Mansion?"
She shrugged at that. "Whateva' ya feel like sharin'." she smirked. Sharing. Good word. Can be filled with all kinds of sarcasm. Then the food arrived, and it was plenty, and the smell erased everything else that was on her mind.
>>"Heh. Hungry?"
Maya grinned as she dug into the food.
"Hell yes. I'm eatin' for two."
Technically, that was not true. But it sounded cool.
