Neena wandered the airport, lost in her thoughts. It had been a while since she’d been to the states; twelve years to be exact. Once she’d graduated, she returned home to Kenya. She never thought she’d be back again, at least, not as a teacher. Considering how difficult of a student she’d been, ‘Teacher’ hadn’t been high on her list of career choices. Not that she wouldn’t have enjoyed pursuing such a career; quite the opposite in fact. But for some reason, most schools seemed to frown on her basic personality. She couldn’t understand why, as the kids were often attracted to her. Oh well. A call from an old friend had given her an opportunity to pursue her teaching career after all. Speaking of which...
Neena glanced at her watch. She still had two hours before she was due at the school for a tour, but there was no harm in getting there early. After all it was easy to get lost in New York, especially since she had been there in years.
Strange sounds reached her ears. Looking up at a nearby building, she thought she saw people waving. Behind her sunglasses, she blinked. Her vision suddenly zoomed in. The people were indeed waving and yelling at her, and pointing, and they looked frightened.
“Now, why would they be frightened?” she wondered aloud.
She blinked her vision back to normal, then turned to look where they were pointing. The silver and white belly of an incoming passenger plane loomed overhead as it was coming in for a landing. Neena glanced around, realizing she’d ‘wandered’ onto an active runway.
“Oooh! That’s why. Hmm. Don’t why they’re worried?” With a shrug, Neena adjusted her backpack, turned and headed back the way she’d come, diagonally across the runway. Just as she’d cleared the lights at the edge, an ear-splitting roar sounded, accompanied by a rush of wind. Neena knelt to the ground to avoid being rolled by the wind blast. Once it passed she stood, and wiggled a finger in her ear, which was ringing. “Guess I should’ve brought earplugs. Oh well.” She continued on her way, whistling an off-key version of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’. --------------------------------
An hour and a half later, she’d paid the taxi driver and was standing at the gates of Xavier’s Sister School. She chuckled to herself and shook her head.
“You never did do things small, Mr. X,” she murmured. Again whistling, she backed up and looked along the wall. There were several trees nearby. Climbing one, she paused to looked over the wall. With a grunt she launched herself at the wall. She landed with an “Ooof!!”, half on her stomach, hanging on with both arms and one leg. It was an awkward, and comical position, but she managed to climb all the way up, and pulled herself into a sitting position. She sighed, and grinned.
“Not bad for a thirty-year-old maid.”
She twisted, and fell to the ground, landing on her feet. Still whistling she made her way across the grounds. She was a half an hour early. She wondered if she’d be able to spot the Headmistress from Xavier’s description, or if she’d have to start asking students. That would be a good thing; after all if she was going to be a teacher here, she’d best start getting to know the students as early as possible.
