The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Raina had to laugh as she watched Naveed fall over after only moments of drinking his tea. "That's Naveed for you." she grinned ear from ear. She'd been sipping at her tea but seeing his efforts made her pick it up from the bottom of the mug and down it.
For a while she didn't feel anything. She sat watching her friends and smelling the fresh air. Gradually her vision began to darken around the edges. Until it became completely black. Her body wanted to panic but her mind was calm and clear. She knew this was just the drug. Just the drug. Just the drug.
She thought to herself that this is what it felt like to be Luke. To not see anything. It was scary... but also peaceful. In the corner of her eye she saw faint blue glow. It became brighter until the blackness was obliterated by the blue. The blue despite being a cold colour felt warm..
"Raina?"
Raina looked up to see Sedna standing there. "Sedna?" she asked. "What are you doing here?"
"Well... It's not really me Raina. It's your subconscious memory of me. And I do say... I don't think i'm quite this round!" Sedna rubbed at her tummy and sides as Raina laughed.
"Well you're not much of an animal spirit." she teased. "what are you- uh Sedna from my memory- doing in my Vision Quest?" she asked
"We need to travel to find your spirit guide. It's not here, I will take you as far as I can.
Raina gave Sedna a puzzled look. "So your my spirit-spirit guide?" she felt a bit confused. "You're going to guide me to my spirit animal? I thought the animal was supposed to be the guide..." her head hurt a bit from trying to process this all.
"If you want to put it that way. Then yes. I am the guide to your spirit animal, but the spirit animal is your guide to you. Your guide to your soul.
Raina didn't quite fully understand but she trusted Sedna- the real one anyway. So she shrugged hoping this one was as reliable as the real one. She stood up "Lead the way!"
Sedna nodded and reached for Raina's hand gripping it tight. Raina started to follow into the inky blue nothingness. It didn't change either. Suddenly Raina knew why she needed a guide in the first place. How was she able to navigate through the color blue?

It seemed like they'd been walking forever through the blue. While Sedna walked with a purpose Raina straggled despite holding her hand. The more Raina looked at Sedna, the less she looked like... well.. Sedna. It wasn't anything she could put her finger on... but every now and then she'd catch something or other that seemed a bit off. This is as far as I can take you. Said Sedna.
Raina looked up "what? why?" but it wasn't Sedna looking back at her or holding her hand. It was Luke. "Luke!" she cried jumping back a moment. "What... but how?"
"Well, it's my turn now darling. Sedna can't go any further. Raina stared at him a moment. It looked like Luke. It had that same smile and his hand even felt like Luke's gripping hers.
"..w-why not?" stammered Raina feeling a bit scared and overwhelmed now. 'Luke' simply shook his head and continued leading her.
"How can you see in this Luke? It's just nothing. I feel like I am the one who is blind." asked Raina.
"It's not about seeing. And I'm different than regular Luke. I'm your-"
"Subconscious, I know." said Raina finishing his sentence feeling a bit sad at the realization that she wasn't with the real Luke, just a ghost of him.
"If you want me to see... just say so. This is your quest. I may be leading but you're the one in control Raina."
Raina fell silent. Did she want Luke to see? The real Luke? How would things change if he could really see her like she saw him. Would he still be attracted to her? Would he find someone else? Be disgusted with her tail? Maybe he wouldn't like her eyes.
"No..." said Raina a little shamefully. "You're fine like you are..." she looked down watching her feet walk as he held her hand and they traveled even further into the blue murk.
Her stomach was tied up in knots now. She wished she was with the real Luke. He'd hold her close and make her feel safe. He wouldn't ask her questions that made her feel so... uncomfortable.

Raina was feeling sleepier when Luke let go of her hand. "You have to lay down now." Though the direction would have sounded odd had she had all her senses about her she was quite willing to stretch out on her back on the blue nothingness and look up at Luke who was now knee deep in the blue while she was apparently floating on it. "Will you be there? the real you? When I wake up?" she asked groggily. "Of course. Wouldn't miss it for the world." he grinned that smile that Raina came to love and then eased her out until he was waist deep. Then he gave her a little push like he was pushing a boat off and when she turned her head he was gone from sight.
She was floating, but she didn't feel wet. She was simply looking up and keeping very still. She couldn't see anything that showed she was actually moving at all... but it felt like she was moving.
It was then that the hands shot out from the inky blue. They where stark white with long bony fingers and they grasped at her hair, throat, arms, and legs and started to pull. Raina awoke from her deliriousness long enough to scream but a hand clasped over her mouth. She was being dragged into the blue.
As she started to go down she wondered why she hadn't noticed the sky before- why it wasn't obvious to her that she was in water as the sky grew fainter and fainter and her lungs gasped for air. A sense of panic gripped her like the never-ending arms.

It took a few moments for Raina to realize she wasn't turning into a giant fish and she couldn't breathe in this stuff because she had no gills! The arms were relentless and pulling her with a gripping force. She could hear strange music now, starting to fill her ears. It was singing. "Selkie Selkie Siren Siren Yemaya Yemaya Sedna Sedna Rusalki Rusalki Mermaid MERMAID the song got louder and louder and Raina struggled to pull her hands to her ears. "Be quiet! BE QUIET!" she shouted and everything went quiet and still. Nothing was pulling her anymore. She was suspended in the blue. She could thankfully breathe.
"You can't keep hiding from them you know." came a voice with a British accent. Raina struggled to turn her head to the side. A sea otter was staring her in the face with beady eyes.
"Are you...?"
"yer spirit guide? Yup. Sorry I couldn't come get ya me self. You were holding me here" he rolled on his back mimicking Raina.
"I was holding you here"? asked Raina focusing on the little furry creature. He was cute but somehow she knew he had one heck of a bite. "And why do you have a British accent?" she giggled.
"Aww come on now. You think they're cute! I'm a product of YOUR imagination. So you tell me why I have an accent? Doesn't help me much in my poker games."
Raina rolled her eyes. "Right, Poker. So what did you mean again exactly? I kept you here or something?"
"Oh yeah, didn't you hear all that, selkie selkie sedna sedna blah blah blah stuff? That's your fear of your power. Your unwillingness to embrace it. It holds you back you know. Holds me back. No wonder you feel so lost in this world! All these things holding your guide back from guiding you and all that." he chirped matter o factly rolling back onto his tummy and swimming along side Raina.
"those awful voices were a part of me?" she asked cautiously feeling scared.
"The one and only. Pretty scary things too. Why do you care so much about them? Why do you let them get so big and scary and evil?" he asked. Raina was assuming it was a he.
"I dont want to be a mutant." she answered. "I make the best of it. But I don't want to be a mutant."
"All your friends are mutants. Your boyfriend. What's so bad about being a mutant?"
"I don't like turning into a mermaid. They're supposed to stay creatures of fantasy. something far away in a fairy tale. They aren't supposed to be me. I want to be like everyone else."
"Ah but without your mutation how would you help other mutants the way you do? Do you honestly think you'd a had any effect on anyone if you hadn't lived through what you lived through?" He had a point. It was the same point Raina often made when dealing with younger mutants so she stayed quiet.
"And what if yer not a mutant? What if ya really are the reincarnation of your tribes Gods? The selkies of the sea. What if you're meant to save your people? or save the world?
She stayed silent. She didn't believe in that old magic anymore. She was just experience a gene. A gene that's traits were more than average.
"And that'll be yer problem right there miss. Not believing in anything. Of course yer powers be dissapearin when yer so afraid of them. Whot you expect?
"Fine." shouted Raina. "What exactly am I supposed to do."
'Nah I'm sorry. I can't just answer and fix you. It aint that easy.

It was then that Raina decided she didn't really want to just float there anymore, so with carefulness Raina stood up and started to walk. Her furry friend- whom she realized was an odd shade of white for an otter- curled up around her neck more like a ferret and tickled her face with his whiskers.
"You can't just walk away you know. He pointed out after a few moments of walking in the nothingness.
"I'm not, I'm walking back to camp. Im tired and I want to see the others." she explained as she moved about as if she knew exactly where she was going. The otter laughed.
"You haven't left the camp Raina, this is all in your mind. Geesh."
"Oh." Raina paused
"Hey, remember good ol Rupert! Now there's a strong name. Reminds me of bears!
Raina turned red. yes, she was quite familiar with the British cartoon that also aired in Canada about the white bear named Rupert. "Of course I remember Rupert. Hard to forget someone who shot you." she spat.
"Ohh even harder to forget someone you loved."
Raina stopped and made a growling noise. "Shut up. What kind of spirit guide are you anyway?!"
" I'm just saying. Why do you think he shot you? Why do you think he did any of the stuff he did?"
"Because I was a mutant." she spat. "Rupert hates mutants. He made that quite clear when we first met. I should have listened." she drudged on.
"Oh. I thought it because you lied to him, he was afraid, everything he thought he knew was untrue, and he was put in an unbelievable position." said the animal again in that matter-o-factly tone.
"yeah. I suppose that was a good part of it." she agreed. "I suppose if I woke up one morning and discovered Luke was something I feared the most, I'd be a bit messed in the head too." she added.
"Luke Loves you, you know." said the otter non nonchalantly.
"Oh? And How do you know that furball?"
"He told you so. Thus he told me too. You shouldn't worry so much about Luke's take on your mutation. He can't see you. And he's a mutant too.
Raina stopped walking again and felt her face turn red. Tears were threatening to stream down.
"Luke can't see what I look like. He might not love me anymore if he does. I thought Rupert would still love me when he got to know me. but he didn't. I don't want to make that mistake again otter."
"Well, perhaps Rupert couldn't accept you for who you are because you couldn't either. Don't you think it's different with Luke? Don't you accept yourself? Oh wait... that's right... you don't." the creature lept from her shoulders to take a place in front of her as if leading her now.
"No... I guess I don't accept myself." admitted Raina.
"You must learn to accept yourself Raina, or you'll never fully experience love, you'll never fully understand or control your powers, and really you wont fully enjoy life until you accept that this is who you are and you aren't going to be a human again. Let's face it. You never were. You're something more. You need to embrace it.
"I'm such a hypocrite!" she cried falling to her knees and starting to cry. "I tell all these things to my students and I can't even do them myself."she sobbed. "And Doctor Gray, he offered me the chance to raise awareness... to make a real difference in the lives of others and I turned him down. I never agree with the x-men. What am I even doing here?" she sniffled and whipped her face looking up to see the otter prancing a bit in front of her. Then suddenly the blue that was solid below him became liquid and the little guy was once again in water. Suddenly he started to grow and take shape until Raina was staring at herself- with gills and a tail in the mermaid.
"You have to embrace me, her own voice told her.
"I'll try. I am trying." said Raina reaching out and taking her own hand.
